Anyone else here who likes skiing/snowboarding, what is your favorite place for backcountry?

EDIT: My favorites are probably Alta, in Utah, or Arapahoe Basin, in Colorado.

Discuss anything about skiing or snowboarding.

i LOVE skiing, though i haven't been out of California to go, i think we are going to Utah next year, everyone says the powder is so light, its hella nice.
last year i went when it was icy and went a little TOO fast, caught an edge and friggin face planted....well, i didn't feel it, but it sure hurt about an hour afterward.
my nose was HUGE, i dont spill like that very often. It was quite the wake up that said 'You still aren't good enough to fly down the hill while being lazy'

A-Basin? Why? There are tons of better places, I myself like Copper, but Vail is great as well, and Winter Park. A-Basin is nowhere near the top for me...

I snowboard. Vail is good. Whitefish, Montana has some isane boarding. I've also heard that Whistler, Canada does too. I'll tell ya if I go there this season.

When I used to live in Colorado, I went to all those places, and my favorites were A-Basin, Loveland, and Berthoud.

I like A-Basin mainly because it was never very crowded, and it had really nice snow. Really the way I judge is by how much fun I have going out of bounds, and A-Basin was really fun. Steamboat is also nice.

Ah, but Copper and Winter Park were never crowded as long as you stuck to double blacks in the back bowls and such. I just never found enough challenging terrain at those places. Nothing like a drop off a cornice to get the blood flowing :thumb:

Have you ever been to Berthoud? I'm not sure if it is still around as I haven't been to Colorado for 5 years but it was pretty nice, and almost deserted.

I actually haven't been there, but I don't know many people who like it that much. Colorado has so many choices it is easy to be picky heh.

I started out skiing when I was young, but my little bro turned to snowboarding and I definitely followed - not much fun skiing with out him!! So I've been boarding for about 7 years now, and this year Im taking a term off of school and going to Meribel, France in the French Alps to work and board for 4 months!!! SO friggin excited!!!

Whistler/Blackcomb is awesome! I hope to hit the slopes their sometime this season if I can. I snowboard, so I'm hoping the local mountains (Cypress, Grouse and Seymour) get some decent snowfall soon!

Me too actually, I never really skiied very well, but I picked up snowboarding a lot quicker. This season I gotta try to land some jumps, last year I'd always get huge air but then bail mid-flight and crash :(

I went back to skiing because snowboarding felt to much like skateboarding (I wonder why) and was to easy. The only thing I couldn't do well was go straight, I could carve perfectly but not straight line.

I skiied for 7 years, and snowboarded for 10. I got bored of them both (skiing first, obviously).

The mountain near my house was supposed to open this weekend, but it has been so warm lately that at the lodge there is no snow at all. I am very disappointed.

I skied for 4 years or so then tried snowboarding one year and liked it a lot more. I have been snowboarding for about 4 years, I can't wait to get out this season, I am going to Mammoth right after Christmas, and mabye again in Spring, I wish I lived closer to the mountains.

Whitefish as in Big Mountain? I went there a few years back and it was pretty good. I like Mt. Bachelor in Oregon better though, due to the massive terrain park.

I used to snowboard. I've still got my board, I just haven't gone in a couple of years. I've never been to any of the big name places. I've never even been snowboarding anywhere outside of Michigan. Crystal Mountain in MI is pretty decent. They used to have a good board park. I want to go again this year but I doubt I'll have the time/money. :(

So, I had big plans for this upcoming weekend to go to Mt. Bachelor, (virgin run of this year, w00t) But, then I remembered that I have a school dance this weekend, and my date is wayyy to hot to bail out on for a day snowboarding. :upset: If I don't get laid I'm gonna be pissed.

I finally went skiing (at a resort) for the first time this year today. It was pretty lousy. There wasn't more than 5-6 inches anywhere, and most of the runs had big patches of dirt. It got up to 50 degrees, so I have no idea how much snow was lost just this afternoon.

I have to go again tomorrow and it will probably be much worse.

Just so you know, the skiing in Australia is actually pretty good...
The season lasts from about half-way through June to the start of October. The deepest the snow gets is about 2m, this is probably nothing compared to what you get in the US but it's more than enough to ski on. Probably the best known resort is Perisher Blue (http://www.perisherblue.com.au), followed by Thredbo (http://www.thredbo.com.au).
I ski at Perisher, where you ski at an elevation of about 1800-1900m. It's the largest resort in Australia, where you have basically 3 mountains to ski on. I've skied in the Italian Alps and I still think Perisher is alright...so it can't be that bad.
So yeah...somewhere to go for your summer holidays.

Here in the US, most resorts in the west to midwest get around double that, if I'm doing my metric conversions right. Back east in Vermont, New England, that area, they get about that much.

I went to Mt. Bachelor a few days ago. It was pretty nice. they have 50 inches so far. The terrain park this year sucks though. There's a total of three kickers in the largest of the three parks, and then I think I remember something like 20 rails. Ehh... :upset:

I'm from Central New York which means crap snow and little bumps for mountains but last year I went up to Okemo in Vermont and loved it. My first experience with a superpipe. Orgasm. Ours has like 10 foot walls and is rarely cut. When it is, it just gets big chunks ripped out of the lip. I hate my mountain. I want to go west.

Score! On my second day riding this year, I landed more 3's than I did all last year. I wish my board were longer so I could get nose grabs though. I'm riding a 152 but am 5'11''. I like it though, easy spins.

victimofreality

I'm getting to the point where doing 360's is becoming all too easy. It's too much about spinning really fast, and really takes no technique. I can basically do one now if I get even the slightest amount of air, and they are becoming easy to land. I want to get a new pair of skis pretty soon so I can learn how to do rails.

I snowboard quite a bit. its amazing. i love it. for me its all about air, off piste and just the pure thrill of snowboarding insanely. i am not amazing and can only do some simple grabs, 180s etc. nothing to insane but still i really enjoy it.

i haven't actually got a board at the moment and was wondering could anyone give me any ideas on a package deal with boots, board and binding for about £400-500? or is that price range to low. i only want a simple intermediate board, nothing too special cos i live in the uk and cant go that often. i have found a few deals and stuff that are alright with various santa cruz or Wild D boards and snow pro boots and bindings but i dont know too much about the equipment. i just ride what i am given usually. any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

There would probably be some packages like that at most sporting good stores. Really the only important thing if you aren't doing racing or anything is that you like the amount of flex. When you spend 1000 dollars rather than 200, you are basically paying for a bigger name.

3's have began to bore me. I tried a cork 3 my last run out, and I actually got pretty close to landing it. But now, the entire northwest has had a hot weather streak, and all the snow at my home mountain melted, and every mountain has either lost a lot of snow, or closed. **** that hot weather!

Yeah, It is getting pretty bad around here. Just about a week ago we got about a foot of really heavy powder, and it has already all melted, and there are bare spots all over.

New cool trick - BS 180 Crossbone. Looks sweet when you are watching from the run in because you just see this person turn around and face you and do this twisted up looking grab.

i've only been to mt. bachelor and monarch in colorado. i like bachelor way better... even though i'm not that good, i thought that it is way funner. (is that a word?) snowboarding is way better than skiing, and easier. lol
