my friends are all into music and such, and i am too, a lot. so i decide to go out for the school football team. it was a 3 day tryout, and i said what the hell, ill do it. so i go for the last 20 minutes of the 3rd tryout, and make the team. so now im like oh, ****. i did this for fun, and they think im serious. then my friends started making fun of me and liked me less just because i like to play football (and i wasnt one of those serious...EAT..SLEEP...WAKEUP..GAMETIME...WOO WOO *bark bark bark* kind of obsessed guys). so they started calling me a jock, and said "oh hes too cool for us". oh well, the main point of this thread is why are all the musical people against sports/people who play sports? (or some of the musical people at least)

How come we make blatant generalizing thread titles?

How come we dont use proper grammar?

i played in the school band and played in the school rugby team at the same time, so in conclusion, not all musical people dont like sports.

For the most part these things take up time.

It takes time to practice and instrument just as it takes time to practice a sport.

Some music people are to preoccupied with music to bother with sports and vice-versa. Finding a medium between the two is the trick.

it depends on who you find. some say its a waste, others like me it is also i big part of their life, i play bass, and i play hockey, so it can go either way

Sports is number two on my hobbies list, right behind music of course.

I've had to split my sports and Music in half... well, its more like 3:1... Music is more important, and involves more practice.

most people that are into music try to morf into the genre that they prefer and take on the labels and rules that supposedly come along with liking that type of music.

Thats what i hated the most about american schools...its a friggin caste system, why does it matter what i like or what i listen to or what i dress like? its sooo superficial... anyways ep is right, you gotta find a balance between the two...personally i like to workout regularly and play bball once in awhile, but my main goal is music and thats where i invest most of my time and energy.

Well, i don't have a problem with the two either, and i am glad i don't live in america if the suprficial-ness :p is that bad. I cop it enough down here in Australia for listening to bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, Pantera and soilwork. But i also represent the city for cricket. I play guitar in 2 different bands as well. I really don't see a clash with sports and music

I don't like sport because I'm lazy. :thumb:

I do think that there is something about the usual type of people who really really like music that makes them adverse to sport though. I'm not sure what it is but a lot of the sporty people aren't musically orientated and alot of the musical people aren't sport orientated.

Way to stereotype people who make music.

Well, if you want to know my reason for not liking sports is because I think they are stupid. That's just me though. I didn't mean that people who like sports are stupid, I just see no point in them. I don't really have a problem with them though.

Ha, thats weird, this year half the team either played guitar or drums. Including me. I'd just tell em to **** off because the only reason they arent is because they are weak (at least, thats the case at my school)

i just get pissed off cus they stereotype me, and even though music is more important than sports, the fact that i play them pisses them off, and then they quote kurt cobain and say "dont be competitive" or some **** like that. i mean, i dont insult musicians so why would they insult me (even tho im a musician).

btw, the grammar insults are getting kind of old

I played hockey for 10 seasons, i snowboard, skateboard, and i play in a band. So it is not true that music "people" don't like sports. Plus, my guitar player plays basketball.

I play Soccer, Hockey and Rugby... and I play guitar.

Mind you I suck at guitar and I really don't take it seriously (just fun to play, I know I'm going nowhere with it).

basket ball doesnt go well with finger instruments.......my friend dislocated his pinky and cant seem to get it stright anymore, his pinky cant well er....bend,so on guitar is like if he uses the pinky it mutes all the strings.as for me i strained my fingers a couple of times and cant play guitar for days.

When i was at school it tended to be that the geeky kids didn't get picked for many sports teams because the captains of the teams would be part of the populist group, ie all about the image. These people were always more likely to pick their friends or people they wanted to be seen with to make them look better. This was bound to put the geeky kids off sport and take away a bit of competitive edge after being knocked back like this. These geeky kids also seemed to end up listening to rock music as they got older and hence wanted to play instruments while the sporty/populist types preferred pop music in it's various forms.

Of course this isn't a hardfast rule as some geeks (myself included) refused to be stopped from playing sport for a laugh. I know sport in american high schools is a more involved thing (american football teams having ridiculously big squads for example) than here in the uk where there was one football team and one rugby team consisting of about 30 people in total at my particular school.

I had a really good point to follow that up but it's gone for the moment...

my friends and i are a mixture of both.

we love our music, but we all play for teams, the guys play for sherborne rugby club, and i play for okeford ladies football club. music and sports woo.

all the chavs in my class insult my music and play football. they put a slant on it, because they are actually quite nice people.
