I love it. Junctioning can be a pain but you don't have to do it. The thing I love about that game is that you can pretty much set your own difficulty level using the junctioning and levelling system, once you've figured it out that is.
I don't think the characters are that irritating, sure they can be annoying in parts but they're nothing near as bad as the X characters (minus Auron who = win)
i loved the start of viii but lost interest pretty quickly for some reason
the characters for the most part are fine it's just squall always seems to have sand in his vag

Geez, tried to take on that optional spider boss down in the Great Crystal (FFXII) last night and got a true kicking from it. Pretty much turned me off trying again, and I'm certainly not going to arse around trying to kill the thing in the Colosseum. I'll just go ahead and finish the game. 280 hours is long enough to be titting about on one game anyway.

280 hours? Wow.
Yeah, it's exactly a year this month that I bought it. Honestly I don't know how I've racked up 280 hours, especially because I had large gaps where I wasn't even playing XII, and when I was playing it it was usually no more than 2 hours a night. So I'm confused.

Tell me about it. All characters Level 99, all equipped with Bubble Belts and a selection of the best weapons and armour, the boss only has 1 million HP and I cast protectga, shellga, hastega and bravery on my team before I went anywhere near the thing. But it started shooting lasers at me and kept killing people off. I went down 24 Phoenix Downs in less than 10 minutes. So now I can't be bothered with the damn thing.

Chrysostom
09-04-2009, 10:31 AM
Honestly, I've enjoyed it. Not as much as, say, VII but I'm glad I stuck with it. But if, as seems to be the case, I can't beat the two remaining optional bosses, then at 280 hours it's really time to finish this, so I can move on to my first playthroughs of IV, V, and VI.
Happy
09-04-2009, 10:40 AM
Have you beat the dragon bosses? Yiasmat or something?
I've beaten one of them, took 6 hours of straight playing.
fatbandit
09-04-2009, 10:46 AM
I didn't do most of the optional end game stuff with XII. Or pretty much most of the 'obsessive gamer' stuff in X either. It stops being an immersive story driven game when you have to spend hundreds of hours grinding just to beat an optional boss to me. And I hope that isn't where the franchise is headed.
Anglachel
09-04-2009, 11:40 AM
so who got Dissidia?
MrConeman
09-04-2009, 11:42 AM
I mean, I only got about 30 or so hours into XII. But I was still waiting for the immersive expansive story to happen. I seen an expansive world for sure, and a kind of fun fighting system, that wasn't my gripe at all. It just seemed like a huge, huge grinding game, and the entire point of it, was to walk from A to B.
When I got a little over 30 hours into the game, I just started thinking "You know, if this was 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10, I wouldn't be able to put it down, and I'd get the FF syndrome where I'm thinking about it alot when I'm not playing, but with this game, I'm forcing myself to play.". That's when I turned it off, took it out of my playstation, and never put it back in.
Chrysostom
09-04-2009, 12:46 PM
Have you beat the dragon bosses? Yiasmat or something?
I've beaten one of them, took 6 hours of straight playing.
I beat Hell Wyrm, which is the only optional boss I managed to defeat. Yeah, Yiazmat is the ultimate optional boss, with 50+ million HP. I was going to try to beat him after I killed Omega Mark XII (the spider boss I mentioned earlier), but if I can't beat something with 1 million HP, I haven't got a hope in Hell of beating Yiazmat, so like I said, it's time to finish XII and move on to all the earlier FFs I still haven't played.
Come to think of it, I need to finish my 228 hour game on Dragon Quest before I start any of the older FFs.

i started quick battles and played Kefka, Terra, Bartz and Zidane
Kefka was so easy i just spammed aerial ranged **** and never lost
Zidane was much more enjoyable to play as i was all gettin in close knockin ppl in the air and fukn their **** up but it wasnt unbearable easy
Bartz was cool guy
Terra started the battle saying "I hope i could do this..." then every time i did some attack she yelled GET AWAY i was like ughhhhhh D:
but yeah its fun and all the song remixes rule

yeah
when i turned on the psp to play dissidia the guy had left it at some point on Squalls storyline and it was a cutscene and it was like

Zidane: yeah itll be easier this way
then Squall, in the most predictable ****ing fashion ever says in his expected pseudo-badass (aka whiny cunt) way "Sorry, I travel alone"

I was really looking forward to getting it, but now that I've joined a band, my minimal income has pretty much become 0 spare spending money, all my money goes on something now. :upset:. I'll get it when I'm on my feet a little better.
About to go to the underwater reactor in 7, I know the boss down there is a bit of a bitch sometimes, so I'm leveling just until I'm over 2000hp with my main party, we're all around 1500ish, but I know the boss has that laser attack that does like 1500 damage to everyone, so I need a few levels.
Tifa has managed to take over Cloud's level while she was the party leader, she's now 43, and he's 42, she's part of the main party, So I'm not sure Cloud will catch her up again, unless she dies, or I do some random other party levelings.
I'm just grinding up a little outside mideel, till I get 2000hp, and meteorain.
edit: also checked something else out a little earlier, one of the glitches in the game lets you land the highwind outside the materia cave that gives you quadra magic, I'd never tried it before, so I gave that a whirl, it works.
fatbandit
09-06-2009, 05:31 PM
It works, but I've never really found a use for Quadra Magic to be honest. Spamming magic with it just isn't as effective as attacking!
And Carry Armor should be easy. Just set people into the back row, bring your long range fighters/long range materia, and load up on Big Guard, then destroy the arms first. Easy peas :)

MrConeman
09-06-2009, 05:40 PM
Oh, yeah, I know I'll take him no problem, he's just known as one of the more cheap and problematic bosses in the game, along with Demons Gate and Materia Keeper, everyone seems to get stuck on those three. I could even go the cheap route and just hit him with magic hammer a couple times, but wheres the fun :p.
I just wanted my hp up a little, because losing party members mid fight and having to restore them is just about the most annoying possible thing.
I like quadra magic a little early on, like this stage in the game, like once you run your summons all over a boss, and they're still going, having quadra magic with like comet, or ultima takes off just as much if not more than whatever summon you have at the time. Once you level a few of your other materia up though, I agree, it's sort of a waste of a materia slot.
edit: haha yeah Listy. See, everyone mentions Demons Gate and this one.
I never have problem with demon gate but carry armor is a ****

none of the bosses in 7 are hard
MrConeman
09-07-2009, 11:10 AM
None of the bosses in any Final Fantasy game are hard with the right level and preparation, every single person in this thread already knows that, well done for you though. :thumb:
Did alot of work in 7 today. Done the underwater reactor part, went and done the pagoda sidequest with Yuffie, making sure to learn Trine from Godo on all of my Enemy Skill materias 'cos he's the last remaining enemy in the game to use it, got all that stuff on the Gelinka, went to space, got the huge materia, beat diamond weapon.
fatbandit
09-07-2009, 11:11 AM
Nobody mentions Schizo though. I always thought Schizo was supposed to be one of the harder ones? I never really had problems with any of the bosses. But I always overlevelled for the Cave of the Gi for some reason. The enemies there pissed me off. And those spiders in the webs, I hated them the most.
MrConeman
09-07-2009, 11:43 AM
Embarrasingly enough, Schizo actually is the only thing to have killed me during this current run of the game, I went in knowing there was a boss ahead but thought I'd have it in a breeze, because I was doing pretty well at that point, so I went in without really preparing my materia or armour or anything or even curing and he handed me my ***. So I reloaded, put on some ice and fire absorbing armour (Dragon armlet, and Ice with elemental in another armour) and kicked his *** all over the place.
The GI cave is a bit of a shock for the first time you play it I think, if you're underprepared it's the first real hard treck in the game, you have what you brought with you, and theres constant enemies, and those spiders are a big pain unless you've done a little grinding, so it's a major tear in that place. Balances out by killing the boss with a pheonix down though.

Yeesh, it's taken 3 years and 260 hours of play time, but tonight I finally finished Dragon Quest VIII, with a completion rate of just under 100%. Honestly, it was a slightly melancholy experience to know that I won't be playing this charming, exquisitely crafted game for what could be a year or quite possibly even longer. Nevertheless it's done, so now I need to finish my 280 hour FFXII game, though the completion rate for that won't be quite so close to 100% as DQ was.

I would love that. Like a complete breakdown:
sidequests completed/total sidequests
weapons, armour, items collected/total items
no. characters with max stats and at level 99/total no. of characters
and then at the end of the list an actual percentage rate for completion so you know exactly where you stand. That would be great.

it's got a similar theme along the lines of the nethicite stuff in xii - a resource known as the blastia is used for various purposes, most notably weaponry and defense
but using it is actually a dick move for various reasons
a corrupt empire controls most of it and there's friction between the empire and an alliance of guilds
there's a lot of story, and most of it happens in the late-game
i haven't quite finished it yet tho, it's a good easy 50 hours of gameplay i would imagine
combat system is fun and this is one of the best games i've seen for a satisfactory learning curve because i'm definitely into the last hours of the game and i'm still unlocking new game-changing mechanics
beautifully drawn and animated cel-shaded visuals
great voice acting and a surprising amount of depth and wit to the dialogue that is belied by early-game twee stereotyping - there's a princess character who is naive but resolute, and a young male protagonist who's learned to suppress his passions and become cynical due to his dark past but can't resist an impulse to defend the weak much like an npc he has a long-earned respect for which results in many scenes of bromance and dramatic sheathings of swords - but ultimately develops into nuance, self-referential humour and surprising but ultimately understandable decisions
it also has a cooking sidequest and they're always amazing

I need some help with FFVII
hey, sup? So I've been trying to play FFVII recently, (on my Vista PC with wireless keyboard, if it matters), but every time I play I keep running into this problem:
(it's shitty quality, but you get the idea)
http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/ybrmuggslp21/?action=view¤t=FF7.flv
It just keeps popping up and doing that. Over, and over.
Any ideas?
kthx

And yes, it's a legitimate pc version.

Jesus ****ing Christ. Yeah, because that's a better idea than Prelude. **** off.
edit: after watching the video, the games visuals do look astounding, and I have no doubt the creators of Final Fantasy can put a good story out again if they try (which they obviously didnt with 12), but the actual gaming .i.e the fighting, looks pretty dumb.

Indeed it is. Leona Lewis though? WTF?
Really underwhelmed with what I've seen from this game so far. I was expecting FFXIII to be the game that convinced me to bypass all the games I still want to buy for PS2 as well as ignore the crappy lack of backwards compatibility and finally get into the current gen machines, but turns out I'm still 'meh' about the thing.
I'd love to know the reason they can't seem to make an FF of comparable quality to, say, FFVII these days. There must be one, surely.

in both battle clips i saw in that video the enemy was partially offscreen and you couldn't really see which part your characters were attacking and what animation the enemy was executing
might not be gamebreaking but didn't look particularly polished to me, camera issues could really break the flow like in dissidia

No, there came a point in the game where there was still so much left to do and the game was like, "okay, just walk through the next 5 locations/cities etc and fight the last boss!"

Eyes on Me is a great song in terms of the music, and it's amazing in the context of the game, and the meaning it carries with Julia/Laguna, and completely seals the atmosphere for FFVIII and helped make it the masterpiece it was.
Leona Lewis is a reality TV whore.

would be cool if you could choose the type of battle system you want to use, like ATB or CBT, in the config/options

fingers mccoy
11-16-2009, 11:54 AM
what was it that people disliked? I thought it was clever - typically frustrating in the early stages of the game (as with any ff), and at the point where you need to be casting powerful magic like every second later in the game the animations would start to queue up which made strategies hard to pull off
i thought the mid-game was very satisfying tho
everyone needs to play tales of vesperia if they want a battle system that's consistently satisfying
Happy

Its okay I like it, I just don't agree that it had a good storyline.
fatbandit
11-16-2009, 12:21 PM
I admire it for trying a different storyline to everything that has come before FF-wise, but I don't feel the whole political thing was pulled off that well. To a certain extent, FF fans want the familiarity that has been provided by so many games with essentially the same plot I think.
I played XII and finished it, but I didn't like any of the playable characters apart from Basch, Ashe and Reddas. And by the end, I wasn't sure why I was actually going through the motions. The story is outlined, but I don't think enough is done to immerse you into the feeling of friction between the different factions or really give enough background into it. It all seems a little hastily explained and hard to keep track of. Maybe familiarity with the story after playing it more than once would help? Vagrant Story had a plot I didn't really grasp at first (partly due to all the different factions and double crossing etc... bit like FFXII!), but on the second and third playthrough I loved it.
The game system worked. But that's it. I've used better game systems, but I always see the actual mechanics as a means to an end, rather than the pivotal part of the game for me. If the characterisation, realisation of concepts and plot aren't up to much, then it doesn't matter how good the game system is in an RPG for me.
Happy
11-16-2009, 12:31 PM
I think the battle system was more fun if you didn't use gambits.
fatbandit
11-16-2009, 12:52 PM
HI didn't like having to micro-manage without the gambits on. It wasn't made to be played that way, and it is a lot harder to play it like that without the typical FF style battle screen IMO.
What it does recreate actually is the Kingdom Hearts style of play. Which I loved!
Happy
11-16-2009, 12:53 PM
I think it just took the fun out of it if you didn't even need to fight in the battles. Oh well, that's just me lol
MrConeman
11-16-2009, 01:27 PM
And me.
I generally disliked everything about XII, the graphics were obviously well done, but the actual look/feel/atmosphere/whatever was far too Star Wars for me. So I pretty much dislike every last little thing about XII. I can't remember how far I got, but I was around 40/50 hours in, and a friend who did manage to beat it said I was a couple hours off the end of the game. (Having done absolutely *nothing* beyond what is absolutely required up to that point). I stopped playing anyway because it was so boring.
Happy

I thought hunting the super monsters or whatever they were called was fun. I think the whole series is going too sci-fi.
