I have the PC version. You can't press all the buttons at once on the keyboard -_-

I have an Xbox 360 controller I use for my emulator now though - don't know if I can configure it to work with FFVIII PC version or not. I don't fancy playing VIII all the way to the end just to find that out though :/

I remember 8 being the only FF game that I got 3 characters to 100 with. I think it was because EXP worked differently, like, every enemy gave the same amount of EXP or something.

MAthiAS
06-20-2009, 06:10 PM
I think you only needed like 1000 exp for every level or something like that.

I liked VIII because you didn't have to grind beyond drawing, and there were other ways to get magic.

since getting to the excalibur II i just play ix every now and then when i'm watching tv or taking a break from uni work

the point of doing all the grinding is getting the max stats that i worked so hard to preserve

if you max the spirit stat it basically makes you invincible cause regen heals you fully in about 3 seconds which is pretty cool

What's really annoying is that Garnet and Steiner disappear half way through and then come back under-levelled.

fatbandit

Steiner was my highest level character by the end I think. The characters I didn't use much (Amarant is seriously an awful character, I never use him) are all woefully underlevelled, but it doesn't matter at all. I really prefer it when you are forced to use a set number of characters. As long as none of them suck. I'd be happier with only 4/5 characters if they were good and complimented each other!

Yeah, I'd only ever use the team I've got now on Easy (Monk, Thief, WM, BM). Normal mode was pretty tricky sometimes, but I was using a tougher team (Warrior, Monk, RM, WM). By the end my Monk was owning everything with 10 hit attacks. Dem fists was flyin'.

Crudo
07-03-2009, 02:19 PM
yeah

fingers mccoy
07-03-2009, 02:24 PM
yeah they rape when you're still milling about on disc 1

while you're in that general area, if you go to a forest on the low lands (safest bit is near the chocobo forest) you can find these little sprouting onion things that use a move called 'chestnut'. Eat one and you'll learn a move called limit glove.

Later, in a place called 'cleyra', you'll find enemies called 'carrion worms' which are kind of like a red and green cross between a maggot and thomas the tank engine. Eat one of those and you'll learn 'auto-life'

the combination of those two moves can win you pretty much every boss fight up til about disc 3, and even then it's ridiculously powerful and will take any boss out in about three uses.

'limit glove' has to be used when quina has 1 hp: if that condition is met, it always does 9999 damage. 'Auto-life' makes it so that, if quina is killed at some point in the battle, she'll be revived once with 1 hp. So you can probably extrapolate from there.

Crudo
07-03-2009, 02:29 PM
awesome

ive been getting screwed over a lot lately because monsters keep killing vivi n shi and every time i use a phoenix down they knock his *** back down

I'd like to know who's decision it was to gimp phoenix downs in FFIX, **** was lame.

fingers mccoy
07-03-2009, 02:35 PM
that's another point, if quina's ever revived with 1hp from a phoenix down and you have limit glove that's obviously something you can work into a battle strategy

oh and later on if you buy a coral sword steiner can learn a move called 'charge'. it makes everyone in the party deal damage based on the difference between their max and current hp, so it makes you ridiculously powerful if you've just used a phoenix down on everyone.

I think phoenix downs were made shitty because there are so many contingencies for injured party members to absolutely rape so there's a balance of risk and reward going on

but yeh, if you're at a low level, you absolutely have to rely on strategy and a degree of luck to get through them

fatbandit
07-03-2009, 03:59 PM
I used barely any Phoenix Downs in my last playthrough of IX anyway. Once you have Auto-Regen, things get really easy :/

And also, I know that you can actually get Sephiroth up to about 400k HP for the final boss battle in VII, but by the time you do, he's just not a challenge because you're so ridiculously powerful by then. They needed to make him tougher even in the 'tougher' form.

fatbandit

I like games where you actually have to think about what you're doing and use strategy to get through a hard boss, not just grind.

I played a solo character, no materia, initial equip game of VII, and you never appreciate how much stuff there is to use and exploit in the game until you do something like that.

Vagrant Story is excellent at this though - to the point that a lot of people give up on it and call it impossible because they don't grasp the system.

How can I make drawing magic less of a pain?

fingers mccoy
07-03-2009, 07:15 PM
is it a pain just because you can't be bothered or because you're drawing very little at a time?

The amount of magic you can draw per turn is calculated by your magic stat. If you can boost your magic stat high enough you can draw 9 magics per turn fairly easily, so put your best magic in that junction slot.

The magic stocked by your enemies is determined by their level, which is determined by the average level of your party. So if you're at a low level they'll have poopty magics. Gain levels with one character and the quality of magic you can draw with a party based around that character will increase.

Turkish
07-03-2009, 08:00 PM
I never worried about drawing magic in that game, the only time I would use draw when the boss was carrying a GF. Other than that I would use item refine to refine items down to magic. You do that early in the game and spend a little time farming, you can get some big stat boosts and have an edge early on in the game.

fingers mccoy
07-03-2009, 08:07 PM
yeah you can refine waters from fish fins i think which are yielded by fastitocalons at the very first beach you come across

water is much more powerful than anything else at that point if you're low level

there are some battles I'd recommend drawing in tho. Meltdowns, Meteors, Triples, Status magic are all extremely useful and help you avoid grinding.

I've come across lots of spoilers by venturing into this thread, they never ruined the game/s for me, but I guess I'd have preferred not to see 'em. It's enter at your own risk, around here.

The real important Garnet (I refuse to use Dagger - see below) questions are:

1. Why the hell did she choose such a dumb pseudonym, and such a dumb way of coming up with it?

*MINI-SPOILER ALERT - THAT MEANS YOU CRUDO!*

2. Long hair or short?

Crudo

I agree name changes are generally stupid. I don't even change Red XIII's. Or do I take the XIII off? I forget. Although I have been tempted to stick with Garnet before, except that makes the whole "Zidane what's this weapon called?" scene pointless, and I refuse to do that.

i changed red to nanaki because it's a lot less stupid

I'd be prepared to do that if the name change option came up after you learn his real name, or if he told you it during the scene in the shinra lab. As it is you don't find out he's called Nanaki until Cosmo Canyon, and it seemed silly to me to pre-empt the story.

Doesn't the guy say Nanaki is Nanaki whether you call him Nanaki or Red XIII? It's been a while, I'd need to double check that.

And I rename Red XIII Nanaki, and keep Garnet as Garnet. As you can't rename Red after that plot point (I feel you should be able to), and more of the game happens with him after that point, it just seems a better option to pre-empt the game in that respect to me. As for Garnet, Dagger is just a ridiculous name.

Really?

1) Grind a little
2) Sell stuff like Grenades, Bomb Arms, etc.
3) Only buy 2-3 of the most up to date armor. No need for everyone to have Mythril Bangles when you can only have 3 people in a party
4) Learn the locations of weapons: Hardedge from SOLDIER in Shinra Tower, Motor Drive in Costa Del Sol Basement, etc.
5) Master and All Materia and sell it. Easy cash from that.

And so on, and so on.

Its not slow at all - something is always happening, and interesting/amusing things like the 'dress Cloud as a woman' part. I don't know, it just had a nice amount of character to it. Then the Shinra tower seems pretty big and epic, only for you to get out onto the World Map, and see how small Midgar is compared to the whole world. I found that quite an exciting prospect. Yet no other location has as much depth as Midgar.

Midgar at the beginning was seriously awesome. The atmosphere getting into the game is just incredible. I mean come on, you're part of an eco-terrorist cell that organizes in the basement of a bar, how cool is that.

I think that because of the obscene amount of money a remake of that game would comand, and the obvious demand for it to be done, they would be stupid not do it. It's been stated by the squeenix head honcho that they're going to continue making FFVII product (games, movies, anime, dvd's, books whatever) until the 20th anniversary of the game.

So it's quite possible they'll do a remake.. on whatever console is the most suitable at the time, and they have plenty of time for that deadline.. (20th anniversary of FFVII being 2017)
