Not really FF related, but I've been playing Vagrant Story on my emulator and this game is awesome. I'm in the town after the wine cellar/catacombs/etc and I just beat the group of soldiers that ambush you when you're spying on the cardinal's men.
Since this obviously isn't a very long game I'm wondering if you clear it and start again do you get to keep your stats/gear or do you just start from scratch? If you get to keep everything I'll probably play through this a few times.
Yes, you keep everything plus you have the Rood Inverse so you can access secret areas with longass boss battles. A second playthrough is the only way to get a 100% map.
EDIT:
Second playthrough isn't really the right term. Basically you beat the final boss and then play through the old areas again.

That sounds pretty fun, then. So basically you can just keep beating it over and over and starting over every time with better stats? I think I love this game.

it's ff related definitely
In my mind any japanese rpgs are cool to talk about in here.
especially as there's only so much we can say about the Final Fantasy games before we start repeating ourselves.

I posted something a while back which explains the characters in the game as I remember it from some blog post:
Ashe: Main character, everything being done is essentially just to help her.
Basch: Ashes bodyguard in a sense, could be considered second main character.
Balthier: Streetwise pirate who knows his Ivalice geography.
Fran: Silent wisewoman who rarely speaks, but when she does it's very useful.
Penelo: The cute one who is the most innocent of all.
Vaan: Everyones bitch who is forced to find hunts, save the game, and buy stuff.

Basch should have been the lead. Vaan almost seems like an afterthought of a character to be honest.
The reason for that is supposedly that he's simply meant to be some punk kid who gets caught up in a main story that centres on Ashe. The turning point is obviously his raid on the Royal Palace. That's when the game becomes about Ashe. The game is told from his perspective though he isn't the main character as such. It was a frankly lame idea if you ask me - I like to know who the main fella is right off the bat. It seems like XIII will be somewhat the same, as it's been reported that there will be no main character, and all will have an equal part to play.
Having totally lost the plot, I read the FF wiki page and decided that the plot isn't too bad - it's somewhat more nuanced than I previously thought. Though only slightly.

there isn't the option of switching between characters mid-battle in Blue Dragon, but the turn based system FFX used is there, so you know when an enemy is going to attack etc..

i think it's possible, i came very, very close
i did a perfect game without skipping fmvs, which adds on an extra 40 mins, and i came in under 11 hours. a PAL game adds about 2 hours. I dunno, I think you could come pretty close. I think if i did the same run through on a PAL system, skipping fmvs, i wouldve clocked about 10 minutes over, which is just about workable.

There's almost no gameplay in final fantasy games. You walk around and read dialog 70% of the time. MGS actually has you shooting things, moving around stealthily, etc.

That other 30% in Final Fantasy, of y'know, fighting, puzzle solving and exploring and everything is way way longer than an entire MGS game. In fact one Final Fantasy game's '30%' of gameplay is probably comparable to the entirety of the Metal Gear series. Metal Gear is nearly entirely cutscenes, and the games are really really short. If you really try and explore and just run around having fun, the absolute most I ever got out of an MGS game was like 15 hours. You can beat any of them in like 6 hours, and thats without even rushing.
I love MGS though.
fingers mccoy
03-18-2009, 09:21 AM
yeh and tbh you can beat any metal gear quite easily in about 2 hours or less if you just run on through from point A to point B like most of the game asks you to
ff kinda forces exploration upon you which creates quite a bit more gameplay because it's not always precisely delineated what you need to do to advance the core narrative
it might seem artificial but it works
I do love MGS also, mostly for the challenges

i honestly think a ix remake would be redundant. i never minded the original's cartoony charms. plus i would have thought they'd never bother anyway. sqare (and now squenix) seemed to have swept the whole game under the rug, considering how little attention it got compared to it's predecessors

Frankly, IX's card game was superior.
Wow, towards the back end of XII, the independent merchants really come into their own, selling items you can't get anywhere else. 235:30:00...that's the most time I've spent on a game ever, except for Dragon Quest which I think is even higher.

ix's card game was good but the stat system was a little arcane without enough in-game explanation and there were about two external rewards to it

Exactly. How are you supposed to win that card from Ellone in space when the rules are so effed up. Its so stupid.
Well by then you should have enough skill to do it.
And if you get crap cards you reset your game.
Or, if you don't mind not having all the cards, get rid of all your lower level ones so you know you're going to draw decent cards.
IX's card game was far harder, it took me a long while to get it.

with viii the amount of rules in different regions is somewhat randomised but can also be controlled

I vaguely remember my friend telling me there was a guy on board the Ragnarok who had every card available in the game and if you spent long enough playing him you could win them all. does anyone else know about this..?
After you recover the Ragnarok on Disc 4, you can fly to Esthar. Somewhere on that continent (outside the city) there is a peninsula. There are no markings, but if you walk around the peninsula which reaches into a lake, you should find her standing outside some kind of escape pod. She's supposed to have all sorts of rare cards, and I think I won Gilgamesh and Laguna from her when I played her (I had nearly all the rare cards at that point).
