So annoying that Steiner and Dagger disappear halfway through and when they come back they haven't levelled up like everyone else. I'd try and get through by not even using them, but there's no other white mage in the game (aside from Eiko who I refuse to use).

I tried beating Emerald Weapon with lucky 7s. Doesn't kill it if you go into the fight with 7777 HP. There are plenty of easy strategies for emerald anyway though, so all was fine :)
I know Aire Tam Storm was based on materia equipped, but I don't think Emerald had other little tricks besides that.

01-14-2009, 02:48 PM
there is a point at which you can level the hell out of steiner while he's disappeared if you have the bloodsword
also if you level up marcus loads then his stats transfer to eiko, tho not his level
which obviously means you can turn eiko into a ****ing beast but i wasnt ever bothered to do that
fatbandit
01-14-2009, 03:49 PM
Really? That's kind of neat - why is there a correlation between Marcus and Eiko? :O
And yes, Aire Tam Storm does 1111 damage for every materia you have equipped. But I'm not quite sure what you're getting at? All I'm saying is that the damage from an All Lucky 7s rampage won't take Emerald down :)

Really? You're missing out! It's a great game.
My first memory of Final Fantasy was with Final Fantasy VII in fifth grade. I was at a friends house since we were all going to have a pool party and I saw the case. I picked it up and was amazed to see it was 3 discs. My buddy Arvin said something to me along the lines of "That's a long game you might think it's too hard."

there is a point at which you can level the hell out of steiner while he's disappeared if you have the bloodsword
When and where is this?
also if you level up marcus loads then his stats transfer to eiko, tho not his level
Who the hell is Marcus? And why would his stats transfer to Eiko?
fingers mccoy
01-15-2009, 06:23 PM
k remember when steiner is trapped in a cage with one of the tantalus band beneath alexandria palace and you have to swing back and forth to get out?
well the bandit he's with is marcus.
as soon as you get out of the cage there is a constant stream of alexandrian soldiers that gun for you
so if you stand in the middle of the area, equip the bloodsword and level up to the point at which you do a respectable amount of damage compared to the alexandrian soldiers, you can just kick back, watch tv and keep pressing the x button to level up loads
after about an hour you could hit something like level 30 which is decent enough
usually whoever doesnt have the bloodsword equipped dies, but if you keep him in the back row (i dunno if you can get auto-potion by that point) and periodically check on him, you can probably level him up simultaneously.
i have no idea why, but marcus' stats transfer directly to eiko as soon as you get her, so if you level up marcus fully with good equipment you can get her some really pumped stats
the best configuration for boosting her stats that way is to gain:
3 levels with the Steepled Hat, Bone Wrist, Chain Plate and Power Belt
3 levels with the Steepled Hat, Bone Wrist, Chain Plate and Magician Shoes
and 92 levels with the Steepled Hat, Bone Wrist, Chain Plate and Glass Buckle
then level eiko up with really good gear:
2 with the Magic Racket, Holy Miter, Magic Armlet, Minerva's Plate and Dark Matter
and 99 with the Magic Racket, Holy Miter, Power Wrist, Minerva's Plate and Dark Matter
to get:
Spd 28
Str 90
Mag 93
Spr 50
which are very good stats.
I don't really think anyone actually wants to do this, but this is what you can do if you want to have the highest possible stats for all characters.
fatbandit
01-15-2009, 06:25 PM

whenever i think of viii i think of that tune with the repeating cycle of military drums that starts playin the tune on woodwind but then introduces a really funny sneery guitar sound
whenever i think of vii i either think of the shinra tune or the tune that plays when cloud and tifa are reminiscing about nibelheim in the 7th heaven
whenever i think of ix i think of the fossil roo or desert palace music but i think that's skewed by the hundreds of hours i spent in those places trying to get through with no encounters
whenever i think of x i think of the music that comes in Home with the guy that keeps repeating something that sounds exactly like 'an annoying chant! an annoying chant! an annoying chant!'

all you need to know is telecharger means download.
FFVII, I always think of the slower tunes, Red XIII's theme, Interrupted by Fireworks.
FFVIII, I think of the awesome music when you're on your way to dollet on the Seed mission
FFIX, the main theme and the theme that plays a lot whenever Steiner and Beatrix are together
As for FFX, the only songs I really remember well from that are At Zanarkand and Auron's theme. Awesome stuff.
Ahh, it'll take me awhile to shortlist my favourite Final Fantasy songs.
Some that really stick out in my memory are;
FFIV - the red wings theme, mysidia, palom & porom
FFV - the first dungeon you get to, that music kicks ***
FFVI - terra's theme
FFVII - 'great warrior', 'the forested temple', 'sending a dream into the universe'
FFVIII - 'maybe i'm a lion', 'blue fields'
FFIX - 'the place i'll return to someday'
FFX - zanarkand

finish the game then start a new game + and you get more dimensional vortexes and once you complete all of those you get a new final boss available from the end of time

Playing through FFVIII.
Just escaped the prison. I'm sending Selphie, Quistis, and Irvine to the Missile Base, not because I hate them or anything, but because I prefer Zell in my parties and because I like getting the bonus cutscene if Rinoa is in your party after Balamb Garden has lifted off.
Squall is ridiculously overpowered, at least, compared to the other two people in the party at the time. Over 4k HP, hits very hard for lvl 23. I'm going to start refining more Curaga for everyone else and start junctioning heavily into HP and Str. Unfortunately, none of the GF that I have have Spd-J so I can't junction the 100 Haste I have yet.

Strategy for OMEGA:
Party:
Squall
Rinoa (that's right)
Character of choice (Preferably Zell)
1. Rinoa. Contrary to popular belief, Rinoa's Angel Wing Limit Break IS NOT RANDOM. It does reflect the magic you have 98% of the time. Junction everything she has except Meteor. You actually only need one Meteor. Remove any magic that is not junctioned.
2. Level. Try to keep your characters at either Lvl. 90-99 but not 100. OMEGA starts the battle with Lvl. 5 Death, which will instantly kill any Lvl. 100 character.
3. Stats. Bring up as many stats as possible, preferably HP, Str, and Mag. Forget Vit and Spr (more on this later). Use Ultima for the best possible boost.
4. Commands. Defend will help alot here. I think Brothers has Defend. So equip it. Recover, Revive, Item are also necessary. Don't bother with GF, I beat Omega wihout GF so you'll be fine.
5. Items. Get 100 Megalixirs by refining the Bahamut card. Get 10 Holy-Wars by refining the Gilgamesh card (If you don't have it, win it from the Card Queen on disc 4. She is on the archipelago south of Esthar.).
6. Magic. Aura, Triple, and Haste are necessities. Have Zell use Triple then Triple again, then whoever comes next, use Aura (3x) then have somebody cast a Holy-War. Do this as fast as possible to avoid OMEGA's crushing attacks.
7. Limit Breaks. Squall should do the obvious here (you MUST have Lionheart, if you don't it'll become much MUCH harder.). Rinoa should use Angel Wing. Remember to only have Meteor and to have all other magic junctioned. Zell's Limit should be memorized. With a high Mag and Luck, you can get up to 12 seconds for his duel. Be sure to use limits after Aura and Holy-War are cast. Do NOT cast Holy-War first, Aura won't take effect if you do.
8. OMEGA. Take a quick round to memorize his pattern:
OMEGA uses high level Ultima and Flare randomly. He starts the battle with Lvl. 5 Death, so recover from that as necessary, or avoid it by avoiding levels that are dvisible by 5. Terra Break is 99% impossible to survive. You can survive this by using Defend. There may be instances where one character gets attacked less than the others. Megido Flame does exactly 9998 damage every time. OMEGA also had Light Pillar which does 9999 so be careful for that.
Good Luck, and don't give up. All you get is Proof of Omega and a Three Stars. The real satisfaction comes from beating the hardest Boss in nearly all the Final Fantasies.

Ok, I really want to pick a FF game that I haven't played in a long time, but I'm not sure which one. I can go with FFVII which has a messed up part on the first disc when you first meet Aeris in the flower bed. Sometimes it freezes when it goes to the scene afterwards, but I am able to get passed it. Then there is FFVIII which sometimes freezes on the second disc. I've beaten FFX about 4 times, but I still enjoy it a lot, and finally there is FFXII which took me 66 hours to beat. I think I might wanna go old school.
It's either FF or going on round 3 of MGS4.

I've been playing FFVII on an emulator lately. I forgot how good this game is.
I'm still on disc 1 but I just got the Tiny Bronco, I have Great Gospel though Aeris still needs to move up to her level 3 limits so I can teach it to her, I have Cosmo Memory but Red needs his last level 3 limit first, and I'm working on getting Omnislash right now.
Also, the bulk of my party is close to level 50.
Maybe I'm weird but I love being ridiculously overpowered in these games. Granted it takes a lot of time to get over-leveled but once you start cruising ahead in the story it's totally worth it (except in FFVIII where it doesn't work because of the monster level balance  ).
Plus the materia levels you gain are sweet. I already have bolt 3, ice 3, and fire 3, I almost have life 2, I'm about to get quake 3, etc..

the best way of being overpowered in viii is avoiding levelling up but stockpiling good magic and levelling up your gfs early on, which can be achieved in a number of ways. doing that means that your stats are boosted extremely high, but your enemies are only matched according to your level, so you can trash the **** out of them.
also, if you get all the gf 'bonus' abilities, then when you do level up you have the opportunity to like double your innate stats
i cannot stress enough how much you can own the **** out of viii if you don't level up. it becomes hilarious.
Iscariot
01-30-2009, 04:38 AM
That was always a really tough concept for me - being strong and not leveling up. Like, I totally understand how to pull it off, but fighting battles and everything is so fun that it's almost impossible for me not to binge on levels.
That's part of why it's so easy for me to be completely overpowered in VII is because I love fighting battles. I don't get tired or frustrated with the constant random encounters like some people do. I could honestly spend a week in the same location just fighting monsters.

Ah yes, of course. How could I forget that. That explains Vaan quite nicely.
How can you consider Vaan the main character? He had the least story out of all the characters.
I have a mental thing wherein I regard whichever character you start an FF with as being the main character, which is reinforced if it's an FF where only the one character shows up to represent the entire party when you wander around towns, as most of the games have been.
the best way of being overpowered in viii is...levelling up your gfs early on, which can be achieved in a number of ways
How do you do that without levelling up?
I'd love to know, because I've finally reached the point where I find levelling up to be a collosal chore. They really need to make an FF where levelling happens a lot quicker, or through some other means than simply doing a buttload of fighting. Maybe they should make an FF where you level up a certain amount after beating bosses, completing sidequests, and completing mini-quests which are still part of the main flow of the story. In other words I advocate a system like Metal Gear Solid, where Snakes rubs his face after defeating a boss and his health bar increases. Something like that.
Anyway, fingers, tell me how to pump up my GFs without the endless fighting...
I wouldn't have had him in my main party, but I always have to have the main character in there.
Ah, I always feel obliged to do that too. I always try to identify the characters who will have most to do with the main story and feel compelled to use them. Well, most of the time - I'll also throw a Vincent, an Irvine, or an Amarant in there too if I happen to like the character better than the others.

Yeah me too. Sorry, I worded that a little odd. He's definitely the main character of the GAME, but not the STORY. There really is no main character per se, It's just kind of one broad issue. I'd say the story mainly revolves around Basch and Ashe the most though.

It's funny you say that. I don't remember where I read it, but there was some quote somewhere explaining how Vaan was the party bitch and nothing more. Basch and Ashe would say what needed to happen next, Balthier would come up with a plan to get to their location, Fran would say something wise here and there, and Vaan would be the one to be sent out to town to pick up whatever supplies they needed before heading out. Penelo was even less useful than Vaan.

Ah, yes I see what you did there, in the bit in bold. I think perhaps I would agree.
And also, holy Final Fantasy revelation Batman! That's been the problem with FFX and XII - there hasn't been one character who you feel is pushing the story forward, and that's why the last few games haven't been anywhere near as good as FFIV-IX. You really need character driven FFs, otherwise they suck.

Holy second FF revelation Batman! My God Che, you're dead right. I never noticed before, but that's how basically all the cut scenes have gone in FFXII. And what you say feeds in to what I said above - I felt right from the start of FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX that Cloud, Squall and Zidane respectively were very definitely the party leaders, the guys pushing the main story along (though usually, I admit, alongside their respective love interests). This tendency to have all characters "pitch in" equally a la X and XII, ruins things IMO.

It looks like they're moving away from the Main Character thing, perhaps? XIII looks, from the few trailers, to be similar to XII in which the main characters all have a beef against one thing, and fight it without much individual character development (Kind of silly to make an assumption on such little content, but still). I can't say I agree with it at all, but I'll buy it regardless.

I agree. But its an FF so I can't not buy it. Now all I need is a PS3.

I have yet to buy a Final Fantasy spinoff game (Advent Children doesn't count) and I'm assuming that's what Versus is going to be. It doesn't look that great anyways.

I thought the junctioning system was a pretty good idea.
Mister_Che
01-30-2009, 11:29 AM
Definitely. You'll never need to heal so long as 100 Drain is junctioned to ST-ATK. Plus, it's easy to have high stats provided you're willing to Draw magic like crazy.

FF8 was good, but it was too easy. The EXP system was different in that it was a set amount to each level, so, it took maybe a few hours of grinding to get to level 100 for all characters. Still really good though.

I thought FF8 was a good game but I didn't like the EXP system they had. I thought FFX did a good job with the sphere grid.

The Sphere Grid was the best thing to happen to Final Fantasy in awhile.
spitfirejunky

Yeah, sphere grid was more balanced and had a lot more longevity.
I don't consider 8 to be easier than 7 or 9 though.
IgniteYourAvail
01-30-2009, 01:24 PM
The international version sphere grid was awesome, too. I kinda like that you no longer had "levels" per se.
Jamais_Vu
01-30-2009, 01:25 PM
The Sphere Grid was great because in the long run you sort of got to choose where you wanted to go with each character. I remember having most of the stronger characters going into Aurons area since he had a **** load of HP and strength bonuses.
8 is still the hardest one that I've played, although 12 had its moments.

I think in VI, Terra was the 'main character', but everyone I talk to had their own 'main' character. Locke seems to come up a lot, and it kind of felt like Edgar for me.
Probably depends who is in your party a lot of the time.
