Picked up FFXII last weekend.
It's ok, a decent addition to the series, but it doesn't really feel like that much of a Final Fantasy game to me.
I do prefer the old combat system, and I really wish Nobuo Uematsu had composed the soundtrack - but I can see the game progressing as it goes on, and maybe enjoying it a little more.
In the meantime, I have FFVII on my PSP; so it's all good :)

Little help please guys, you know when you get off the Leviathan, and you look at your map it says "West of the Sandsea...... sounds far", where do you go, I went to Rabanastre via the teleport crystal, but there is no indication of where to go on my map.

You need to go through the west-gate, then through the Westersand which leads to the Sandsea. There's two huge areas there with a save at the end of each, which can be hard if you're not levelled enough.

Almost 40 hours in, I can't believe at this far in the game they are still sending you on pointless shitty errands, most RPG games get that kind of bull over with within the first hour, two at the most.
I'm currently looking for 7 moogles. Or rather I would be if I hadn't saved it and turned it off in disgust.

Yeah, I realize I could do this stupid moogle finding in like 5 minutes, it's the principle of it all. RPG game should be over stupid errands like that past like the first 2 hours, tops.
My friend made a good point in school a week or so back (idk I might have posted about it already).
We are both at roughly the same spot in the game, 30/40 some hours in. He made the point that if this was VII we would already know about Sephiroth, Jenova, getting to Cloud's real past with Tifa etc.
Yet this game is just "omg restore Dalmasca". This is really the first time I feel like it's a chore to play through the game, theres almost no story. :(
There had seriously better be some good twists before the end.

Don't listen to them. It is disappointing in some ways, but that is not to say it is not an enjoyable game.
I find the disappointment stems from the fact that it doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game. Yet whilst it lacks that Final Fantasy spirit in many areas, it is still an enjoyable and addictive game. If you were a fan of exploring the Final Fantasy worlds, you will love XII.
Basically, if I were to give XII one sweeping, inaccurate statement; I would say Final Fantasy XII is Star Wars in a Final Fantasy setting.
Oh yeah, anybody checked out Nobuo Uematsu's soundtrack for the Xbox 360 game Blue Dragon? At first I couldn't find much to like, but it is growing on me now.

Basically, if I were to give XII one sweeping, inaccurate statement; I would say Final Fantasy XII is Star Wars in a Final Fantasy setting.
Thats exactly how I felt about the game. And its not the "classic" star wars either. It feels like the new star wars (episodes 1-3). The music is almost the exact same style and composition and the opening FMV and a bunch of the other cut scenes look A LOT like star wars. I just wish they would screw the future crap and go back to the old days where it was medieval style stuff mixed with semi-future elements like FF5-7. 6 IMO was the perfect combo.
Also I wish they would go back to ATB system. I dont really like the way they did real time in this game. Star Ocean 3 is a great example of a real time combat system, nice and fast, fun to play. I'm hating that Nobuo isn't scoring these games anymore. I started a new game in FF5 last week and from the get go I was instantly happy hearing catchy melodies that I can hum all day.
Dont get me wrong, FF12 is a great RPG, but if you just gave me the game, and there was no prelude music in the beginning, the spell names(hastega, curaga) were changed, no Espers, then I probably would've never noticed it was a FF game.
They should just make a new RPG series or continue with the Chrono series. Has anybody heard of Chrono Crisis? It's a fan made rpg that is still in development. It looks amazing.

I think once Masashi Hamauzu takes over the reins, the quality of music will return to the standard set by Uematsu. I'm as annoyed as any about Uematsu leaving the Final Fantasy series, however if anybody is to become a worthy successor, its Masashi Hamauzu. Check out his soundtrack to Unlimited SaGa for proof.

Yeah the game can get really tough. It's more like the old school rpgs where level building is very important. Still haven't beaten it, bu you'll easily spend a ton of hours getting everything and beating all of the bonus bosses, which are insane by the way.

I haven't played the game in weeks, but I think it's some of the best gameplay of the series. I hate trying to run away from battles, which is impossible in some places when you've got a dozen enemies following you until you leave the area, but other than that I like the gameplay. The only things I don't like are the music and the storyline. The plot so far seems to be Dalmasca falling to the empire, and then a plan to take it back, and that's it. It's worse than FF8, and nothing gets added to the plot for hours at a time whilst you follow people's advice to "head west" or whatever.

Yeah I've posted a lot about SO3. It's one of the most detailed, immersive RPG's I've ever played. Definately one of my favorites. The music and environments draw you in so well. The battle system is an example of what a real time battle system should be like. Very fast, very simple, and very fun to play. There is a TON of detail in the game, too. Literally, you could go into a house or shop, go up to a piece of art on the wall, and read the title. And ALL of the art has different names. Same with bookshelves and other things. Not only that, there is a full fledged encyclopedia in the menu. Theres a ton of other cool stuff in the game but that is what a review is for. The gamespot review of it is crap though.
You should definitely pick up this game. Anybody who likes RPGs should get it. If you were disappointed with FF12, I recommend you get SO3 to ease your soul that not all RPG's are becoming crappy.:thumb:

That has never happened to me with a Final Fantasy game, and actually very rarely happens at all. I usually see a game to the end quite quickly on the first play through, but my GOD this game is tedious, there actually is no substance to the story at all.

Ok I lie, I just wanted you to keep on playing.
I think Final Fantasy XII shows up a clear difference between my classification of a good game (and by the looks of it you guys too), and the medias classification of a good game. The average rating amongst the big wigs like IGN, gamespot etc was above or at 9/10. IGN said:
when does a game with momentous hype and anticipation actually live up to media, consumer, and competitor expectations? The answer to all three of those questions is a simple one, "When you're playing Final Fantasy XII."For the bad aspects of the game, gamespot said:
The Bad: The gambit and license-board systems are complicated to get used to; a bit too much running around back and forth in some spots. For the good aspects of the game, gamespot listed:
The Good: Inspired art direction and a strong cast of characters draw you into the world; lengthy quest spans dozens of hours of gameplay; redesigned strategic combat system offers considerable depth and complexity; all battles are fought in context while exploring, so no random encounters; excellent music and voice acting.Strong characters that draw you into the world and excellent music? You've got to be kidding me. I think just from those quotes it is clear that the media's perception of the game differs greatly from ours.
When I look at other big name games of the past few years, I see other examples that show a difference between the hype of the media and my own perception of the game. I found Halo 2 only half as enthralling as what the media made it out to be. Jade Empire was decent, but would I give it a 9.9/10 like IGN? Hell no!
I guess I feel like the gaming industry is moving away from my ideal of what a game should be, towards a model that is more defined by the American market. And I think that perhaps the media (and the American market) differ from me in their consumption of games, them having a very high turnover of games. Whereas I only buy a game every few months, and as such I guess I'm looking for different things in a game. I'm looking for a world to be immersed in, to daydream about for months to come. They're looking for entertainment for the weekend. If they don't enjoy it, they move onto the next game.
Lets use Jade Empire as an example. For IGN it was probably very entertaining for that weekend, so they gave it a very good rating. I however expected to be immersed in it long term, but only got a weekends worth of action from it. It had a nice atmosphere, some interesting environments and intriguing characters. But it was over before I had even really begun to become involved in it. So how would I summarise this? Games are being aimed more and more at their model of consumption, rather than mine. And for me, that's a let down.

There are many storylines, all of which have defenite endings. They're all fairly long (Rank missions for all three countries, Rise of The Zilart, Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urghan), and new storylines are added in each expansion.

I really wish people would stop bagging on Dirge of Cerberus. It's not a fantastic game, the story in no way really justifies a new game, but its fun. Remember when that was what games were for?
Besides, not only is it really good fun, it wouldn't be that bad a story as its own game, it would just be another third person shooter with no real story. Also, its hella fun to see Cloud and co's cameo roles, annnnd Vincent is friggen awesome.

I had just restarted my character as a mithra thief (going for Ranger/Thief \o/ ) and was wandering around killing bumblebees and shi. Hmm.
Sign up with the Fishermans guild in Port Windurst (I think) and use either Little Worms or Insect Balls. I think all you'll really need is a Bamboo Rod as well. If you can catch Moat Carp, stacks go for about 2k in Jeuno, which I can help you sell. You might be catching kelp because you're fishing in salt water. Try fresh water for now (basically, anything inland away from the shore).
You should be set. :)

Wow I havent been here in a while.
Anyway, I just completed Baten Kaitos Origins on the Gamecube. Very awesome, underrated, unique, great rpg. The BK series is a must for anyone looking for a unique RPG to play. I had so much fun with the two BK games and since now Nintendo acquired Monolith Soft, I really hope they make another sequel or prequel. I had A LOT more fun with this game than what I had with FF12, BY FAR. The music scored by Motoi Sakuraba destroys 12's soundtrack by miles, definitely some of the most addictive RPG soundtracks I've heard in a while. The voice acting in the first BK sucked but it was way improved in Origins(prequel). It has cards in the game but dont let that turn you off, its not some Magic game or whatever. I thought the same thing "ew card based rpg? wtf is that crap" then I played it and I was addicted. The battle system is better in Origins, but they are both great games.
I highly recommend these games to anyone who has a Wii or Gamecube that is thirsting for a new RPG to play. I recommend playing BK Eternal Wings and then move on to Origins, its a lot easier to see the connections this way.:thumb:

Interesting, but I don't think they did. Cloud doesn't love Tifa. Advent Children pretty much confirmed that that whole thing was a one way, Tifa-based street.
Um. Sorry, what?
Playing through the game and watching the movie it's very much easy to see that he loved both Tifa and Aeris and they both clearly cared for him thats kind of what stipulates a love triangle. He may or may not have had a preference, and it usually lies with the player and the choices he makes in the game, so it's really down to you who you prefer more.
Of course the natural course of the game makes it seem like he would inevitably have chosen Aeris, but this was a very well used relationship to make her death much more tragic than simply "oh one of your party members is dead". But I think you'll notice that Cloud doesn't really show any emotion or affection for either of them until after Aeris dies. I don't see how this is any different from when in the film he acts a little cold towards Tifa, and the film makes it pretty clear that during it Cloud is a mess of paranoia who thinks he isn't able to protect anyone so he keeps his distance from all of his relationships, friendly or otherwise. Even if neither relationship was ever officially explored it's quite easy to see he liked them both.

Well, Cloud's "love" for Aeris is unrequited anyway, so he'd better settle for Tifa.

Cloud could still get Aeris if he's into necrophilia.

Played the first one only. I thought it was pretty good, particularly the combat system. Music wasn't spectacular.

Final Fantasy VI was and will always be the best Final Fantasy ever.
They can never make another one better then that.
And the most hilarious moment in a Final Fantasy must have been the town in FF1 where everyone were ghosts.
Looked like small transparent stick figures. xD

I know it'd probably never happen but an FFVI could probably be the best game ever.

FF VII on a Ps2 memory card?
How was FFXII?

It's alright, people seem to love it for a little while then grow bored.
new battle system is cool but its a love it or hate it thing.
Voice acting is pretty cool, proper accents not just American one, except Vaan and Penelo that is.
Storyline really sucks though. At the end these things were revealed and I was sat there thinking wtf when did this develop?

What's the new battle system like? Still based off the FFVIII style?

Its like real time, you see monsters and stuff, and don't have to enter battle and stuff. I think its a great thing.
You have gambits too which mean you don't have to sit there for hours with a boss thats weak to say Ice clicking magic>ice>foe>cast etc, you just set a gambit to "foe weak against Ice - use Blizzaga" etc.
Personally though, I don't like using Gambits cos it just makes it too easy and its annoying when one of your characters attacks a monster you don't want to fight.

I played XII for 15 hours then brought it back. There is virtually no gameplay involved once gambits are introduced. You set up everything that needs to be done, have a conversation, go to a place, watch your characters kill monsters, watch your characters have a conversation, go to a place, watch them kill monsters...
Apparently this goes on for 80+ hours as well, and the story was really not interesting...

Also the limit break chains could go on for so damn long... it just got boring after like the first good one you had.
I agree about gambits totally... just lame, made it so you didn't have to do anything ever.
The story seemed like it could've been good but they didn't really tell you much... at least up to where I am/was. I found it hard to remember and connect what was going on... maybe this is partly due to it being too boring to play too continuously.
As for future battle systems, I'd like to see them bring back Sabin's blitz in some way... also Tactics style job classes would be sweet.

I'm halfway through VII. I must say though, after such a long time since I've played the games, I'm amazed at how good they are. After VIII I'm going to re-play VII then play XII. I really hope its not as bad as some people say it out to be...
Has anyone else noticed how ridiculously hard FFII can be near the beginning if you happen to wander too far in the wrong direction on the world map?
And the way they've re-done the music for FFVI Advance is annoying, but the new translation is good.
What is everyones view on Final Fantasy X ? this is the first FF game ive played and im having a bit of trouble getting into it.
It was alright, but I've never been able to play through it more than once.
I was thinking about a Final Fantasy X drinking game, where every time one of the characters laughs you take a shot or something, seeing as the voice acted laughing was just..so bad.

The voice actor for Auron was pretty good, in my opinion.
Auron had the best voice acting in X.
The laughing-shot game mainly applies to Tidus and Yuna.

I liked XII alot, however, the ability to turn the TV off for an hour to go and read a book while your characters were fighting a huge boss was wierd. I liked the battle system alot, the fact that the monsters were actually there onscreen was a revelation; there was enough in the way of quests to keep me interested, but the storyline was awful. And completely stolen from Star Wars...think about it. Vaan is Luke, Balthier is Han Solo, Freya is Chewbakka...
I actually much prefer X, but the gameplay is improved from that.

My friend said it was a rip off of star wars in an attempt to ruin it for me.
Good thing I've not seen any star wars :D
And did anyone else find it annoying that there was absolutely no indication to the fact that Dr Cid was Balthier's father until right at the end?
And where was the development of Fran and Balthier's romance story? Basically he saved her, then they got married.
Lord Abortion
08-28-2007, 06:40 AM
What?
Cid and Balthier being father and son was mentioned plenty of times, when you were in Archades. Also, Fran and Balthier didn't have a relationship, that's where another Star wars reference comes in, Balthier the Sky Pirate(Han Solo, the smuggler) falls in love with the princess Ashe/Leia

Starting a new Tactics now... going through the game with Ramza as a Time Mage/Summoner and a generic as Ninja/Dancer. Should be fun, never used these classes much besides ninja.
I'm slowly working my way through FFVI Advance at the moment. Aside from the not-so-great music conversion its pretty good :)
