i think there should be a poll, consisting of this :thumb:
ff5 poll round A: *choose favourite character*
ff6 poll round B: *choose favourite character*
and so on, and so forth, all the going up to ff10 and after the 10th one, we put the winning characters from each round into a final poll
POLL NAME: Ultimate final fantasy character

Yeah, that one's pretty good.
I hate it when people pronounce Tifa that way though.
andyhainey
11-19-2005, 02:05 PM
they are meaning to do that
tifa: tiffa
aeris: aris
yuffie: yoofie
Chrysostom
11-19-2005, 02:57 PM
aeris: aris
I pronounce that like the flower/part of the eye = Iris. 'AE' is the latinized version. It should be pronounced "eyeris" if you like.
Add Red XIII and Cloud to that list there. I agree totally... I dig love stories for some reason. Never thought I'd say that 5 years ago lol.
Yeah true. They both had dark/sad pasts. Especially Cloud.
Don't Steiner or Amarant count as angry characters?
Steiner isn't an angry character. He's an arse, and he's impatient. Amarant is more like a 'Meh...I'll do things my way and screw the rest of you' character. Best demonstrated by his attempt to get through Ipsen's Castle by himself. I like him, another of my loners that I have a thing for.

They need to bring back the loner main character, and make the light hearted one's serve as comic relief from a deep story. It shouldn't be the other way around.

So true. Squall is probably my favourite character ever. Then Vincent, he was so tortured, it was cool. Even the way you find him, and the things he says at that point are great.
MAthiAS
11-19-2005, 04:18 PM
Yeah, I probably relate most with Squall.

Me too. Why do you relate to him?

I see. Same here. He and I are also similar in that we both dislike relying on other people. I prefer to run my own affairs without interference, as does he.

Yeah, same for me. In most cases I prefer spending time alone too, there's only one or two people on the planet I actually enjoy being around.

You need it bad. It's great. One of the best. Certainly my favourite so far. Although I have yet to play 10, I suspect FFVIII's position is safe. But maybe I'll be proved wrong.

Yeah I have, I've had it since it was released, but am only now on the verge of completing (interrupted by going back to uni). Why?
As for lack of good characters in 10, from what I've seen, Auron and Lulu are my kind of people.
MAthiAS
11-19-2005, 04:54 PM
Just wasn't sure if you had played IX. What school you at?
Auron and Lulu are cool, but they can't make up for the onslaught of annoyance that is Tidus and Yuna. Their too secondary as characters for them to save the game.

That's what I feared, but nevermind. IX itself had only one even vaguely "loner" character = Amarant. It was a bit disappointing.
I'm British, so I'm at one of the unis here.

Ah, Bahamut, how lovely of a summon that you are.
Great summon, really. Pretty darn good in that card game as well.
I just beat the Ancients Temple today for FF7. I knew that Aeris was going to run off and die after you beat it, so I unequipped all of her materia and items. Good times. Gonna go watch her die now.

Haha, Sephiroth shanked you!
my fav summon would be diabolos (never got eden so far :-/ )
edit: diabolos doing 9999 damage right now =
Carbuncle! Carbuncle's a cool summon. I heart reflect.
Ugh, I hate this part of FF7, when it's just Tifa and Barret, I never use them in battle, so they're about level 38 while Cloud, Vincent, and Red XIII are level 45. :-/

it's not so bad in VIII though given the junction system
in VII it was like :

in VII it was like :

Well, at least in VII they actually level up a bit, and can actually do something. When I had to bring Tifa along to fight Jenova D-E-A-T-H, I gave her all my summon materia and just kept on Summon > Summon > Turbo Ether when needed.
it's weird

Yeah it was nice only having a level 10 Selphie then being able to get her up to 9999 HP purely through junctioning. It meant you didn't have to spend tons of time levelling up all the characters if you wanted to use them on rotation.
What I like so much about the KOTOR series is how all your characters level up together (essentially), which made it so that you could just use any characters you wanted in any situations.

But then, I haven't faced FF9's boss yet. Or Sin from X.
FF9 was pretty easy I found, esp the end boss. The only reasonably hard one was the one at the bottom of the well/hole thing (been a while), It took some time.

If by FF boss you mean last boss, then they're almost always a joke.
I only got into Ultimecia's castle in VIII, and then my computer got wiped :upset:
So was it me, or were Bizarro Sephiroth and JENOVA Absolute harder than Safer Sephiroth?
And in IX, the last boss was ridiculously easy... Not a patch on Trance Kuja (Quina's Limit Glove FTW!)
In X, Yu Yevon was barely a boss... Jecht was so much harder.
Its usually the optional bosses, and some of the earlier bosses where you aren't super-levelled etc which bite you hardest.

It was like '60,000 HP? No sweat!'
Then he kept healing himself, and like... raping my characters with his gnarly attacks. When I finally decked him, and he came back with the sword and another 60,000 HP, I was so gutted :p

I had neither. Didn't know about Anima until I'd already missed the Besaid Destruction Sphere, and damned if I was going to go back and kill Dark Valefor. I killed it with Yojimbo, but it didn't get me Ribbon armour, so I thought I should just leave it until I was strong enough to get it with other means.
And Magus Sisters... You can't get them without Anima, right?
I just kicked Jecht's arse conventionally after about 4 attempts.

I don't know... I think VIII would benefit from having voices, but I guess that's just me.
Whatever they do with 7 in future - spin off films or a remake, if they have voices, they MUST have the guy who played Mr T for Barrett, and Steve Burton did Cloud so wonderfully in KH, he must stay.
:smash:
Someone else with the same mind as me.
Steve Burton would be good for Cloud again, yes.

No, no, no. Best Ability = Aura + Lionheart.
And actually Lulu sucked... Her limit was balls, and once Yuna had Double Cast and some black magic, she was a better Black Mage, as her offensive magic stats were oddly better than Lulu's.

KH is Kingdom Hearts.
And actually, X style summoning would be cool if all your characters hung around too, and it acted as an extra party member for a while...
Maybe have summon-party member combo moves and stuff. Different one for each character depending on which summon you have out :) Something like that :p

Brilliant thread...the FF series is the best thing to happen to video games...nothing like a great RPG to play for 100+ hours. I'm a big fan of FF3...hence my name. I just found this thread and don't wan't to skim the 300+ pages so i hope i'm not repeating something but......
Has anyone checked out the new FF11 coming out on the xbox 360.(YES!Finally they bring out a decent, true RPG for the X-box)...I guess there making it totally online. If you check out the x-box site they got some screenshots. I'm not sure if bringing it COMPLETELY online is a good idea...unless they do a damn good job but i'm very much looking forward to seeing how it turns out.:D

To get Vincent:
Make sure you can take on a boss who has 8000 HP and uses second level spells.
Enter the Shinra mansion in Nibelheim, and either follow the clues in the bottom left room (the fourth is in invisible ink, so select it anyway, or just go straight to the safe if you know the combo - R36, R97, L10, R57? Sounds kinda right, but I wouldn't go on it from my memory  ).
When you open the safe in the 30 second time limit, you fight Lost Number. After losing half his HP, he will become a monster who uses physical attacks, or magic attacks, depending on what attack you used to take him under the 4000 HP barrier. Not too hard. Generic boss really. If you're on the third disc, chances are you can beat on him with 1 or 2 attacks.
Anyway, beating him nets you the Odin materia, Red XIII's lvl 4 limit - Cosmo Memory, and the key to the basement. Go down the spiral staircase to the basement, and into the room with coffins. Talk to Vincent in the purple coffin. After a while, he wants you to let him sleep. Do so. Leave the room, and head back towards the stairs. He will join you.
I didn't really like the Sphere Grid :/

Mah, Lost Number is my Specialty, I was stuck on him for Ages when I first played through it. When he uses Lost Blow, you're buggered unless you can cope with 2000+ damage.
Poison is always the best way.
That's why leveling up well before then is a good idea.

You think they'll change the formula?
:upset:
You have a lot to learn.
There will be a main character. They will be searching to destroy something. Somewhere along the way, they'll realise what they were chasing was only a small fry, and their REAL quest will be to go after a bigger GLOBAL threat. And so they do. And an unlikely bunch of characters will succeed where the rest of the world couldn't. And the main character might have a bit of a thing going with another female party member.
Meh.
That'll be the basic premise of FFXII.
Here's a piece of advice for FFVII (And a lot of FF games actually... The ignorance most people have to it is mostly in VII though): USE THE BACK ROW!
Put Barret, Yuffie and Vincent in the back row anyway. They have long range weapons. In the Mithril mines, you get a Long Range materia. Give this to another character with a short range weapon, and put them in the Back row. You have no idea how many times this has saved my arse...
Also, steal Atomic Scissors for Barret from those machine things outside the city as soon as you leave Midgar. They're better than the costly weapon you buy from Kalm. Only problem is they're short ranged.

I always get the atomic scissors. You can get Matra magic (useful to finish off alot of enemies to level up limit breaks) there too, I do alot of leveling there too. I want to be at least level 20 before I get out of the Mithril mines, which if you use Tifa, have a good weapon for her from Madauges (big morningstar armed things) and of course the Hardedge from the Soldier firsts in shinra HQ.
