Go play FFIV then.

What's the consensus here on FFV?

Underrated, imo. Not as good as 4 or 6, but its Job system is great. :thumb:

On a slightly unrelated note, I'm having to take a break from FFVI for a while to read the new Harry Potter /geek

hehe.

I had trouble on the ghost pirate ship, too. Add to the fact that on my old computer, it couldn't render some of the graphics on that part. I dont think its the rom because it works fine on my new computer. Whatever, I made it really far, I never beat it though. :thumb:

Yeah, you rarely hear that game talked about. I guess in between the apparently great FFIV, and my new beloved FFVI, its overshadowed a bit.

I'm still hooked on this FFVII soundtrack, its like replaying the game everyday.

FF Chronicles is FFIV and Chrono Trigger right? If so, I might just pick it up, since both games are said to be awesome. I'm not too big on ROMs, I'd rather play the real game if I can pick it up relatively cheap and have the console.

After finishing FFVI, I'll probably finish my replay of IX and beat Ozma, then get Chronicles and beat those two games.

By then maybe XII will be out. Or I'll just play V.

Hang on, I'll fire up my ROM and find out.

Edit: I'm in the Marsh Cave. I know my way through etc...but I've not got any items and am quite a distance from the nearest town.

After finishing FFVI, I'll probably finish my replay of IX and beat Ozma, then get Chronicles and beat those two games.

I'm going to complete VIII, then VII (I'm at the part in disc 3 where I can do whatever, I might get a gold chocobo, not sure yet) and after those two I'll probably play through the older games in order.

i'm at the part in FFIX where you're just about to enter terra, although on previous attempts i got my *** kicked. My characters are all around level 45-55, so does anyone know what sort of level my crew should be at before i enter terra?

red barchetta
07-17-2005, 07:24 AM
you can level up in terra too, but level 55 is good enough i think. you can buy decent weapons and armours in terra too.

if you're freya is in a good level, her 'cherry blossom' ability is very good. it will do around 4000-6000 damage to every enemy.

if you still get pwned, a good place to level up is outside of Daguerro (the library), and fight the dragons, if you have 'level 5 death' with Quina. this is good because:

1. level 5 death will kill them in one move
2. it will power up freya's 'dragon crest'
3. if you steal with Zidane, you can get ethars and good items. stealing also powers up 'thievery'
4. good exp. points and good money.

when fighting the dragons, make sure all you're characters are in the back row, and have either 'reflect' or 'immunity to thunder'.

But you're playing FFIV! That's an amazing RPG. Forget FFX, play FFIV. Way better. And Cecil does become quite badass later in the game.

my party has always been Zidane, Freya, Quina, and Dagger.

Zidane's thievery does heavy damage on my file, all of my freya's attacks did at least 8000 damage, Quina has mighty guard and a frog drop thats does 9999, and Dagger had curaga (and Bahamut and Ark)

Freya's like my favourite character ever

the problem with that is you have to have quina in your party to cast it and quina to me is not so good, I will play freya next time though, I have never used her in the 8 or so times I've been through the game

Quina had excellent blue magics: angel's snack cured all abnormal status' for all characters, white wind recovered everyone's hp by about 4000, mighty guard casts protect and shell to all, frog drop does wonderous damage and magic hammer pwns Ozma. and his/her normal attacks sometimes randomly does around 8000damage.

TheBlackAcidChildren
07-17-2005, 01:00 PM
Quina is debatable imo. I suppose Angel's Snack is okay, but it uses Remedies like anything... only place it's really useful is fighting Ozma's Curse attack.... and then Quina has to be able to use it. Curaga > White Wind. I never bothered with Frog Drop, guess I should. Mighty Guard isn't that great, I never really use Shell/Protect and with ATB they run out too quickly... And consistent high damage attack is much better than random high damage attack. I'd rather have someone consistently dealing 4000 than someone who could either deal 8000 or 100.

My party was the original four. Zidane, Vivi, Dagger, Steiner.
Zidane = stealing and attack, plus his trance is fantastic.
Vivi = Doomsday. Nuff said. Just gotta make sure you protect yourself against it, which is easy....
Dagger = Curative Magic and summoning.
Steiner = Shock, great damage attack.

But you can take down anything with anyone as long as you have the right strategy.

Shadows
07-18-2005, 12:46 AM
What do you do?

Usually I just spend hours yelling and accumulating.
I'll run you through the process.

Step 1: First, choose the job you want to get the unlimited points for. It doesn't work for every job. It only workd for the jobs with enough abilities to fill the screen (meaning if you have to scroll down to see all the abilities, you're golden).

Step 2: Get enough points to learn one ability. This is where trial and error comes in. The amount of points varies for each job. You just have to find which ability this trick will work with.

Step 3: Once you've got the points for one ability for the job you want, highlight that ability and press circle. DO NOT SAY YES TO CONFIRM LEARNING IT! There's something you need to do first. Have you ever noticed that when you're reading through something and there's enough info to make you have to scroll down? Well, if you didn't know, holding square and using direction up or down will automatically shift to the next page instead of you having to go line by line. Once you select the ability and the box comes up to confirm it, WITHOUT SELECTING YES OR NO, hold square and press down (or up, depending on what ability is selected). The list of abilities (in the background, since the confirm box will be in front) will shift. So you'll have selected an ability, and before confirming shifted the screen so that the cursor is on a new ability. Now, select YES in the confirm box. You should hear that familiar "ability learned" sound, but no ability should've been learned.

Step 4: Again, this part depends on what job/ability you selected. After selecting YES, your amount of JP remaining should've changed. It may have gone up drastically - that's nice, but we're going to max it out. :) Chances are the JP will have gone down to "000000". If so, congratulations.

Step 5: Once you have 0 JP for that job, leave the menu. Exit all the way back to the initial formation screen with all the characters listed. Now, go back in! If all went well, the amount of JP for the job you just messed with should be at 99999. :)

And that's it! Spend away! If you got some odd number of JP instead of 0, just select a different ability and repeat the process. Some jobs, such as black mage, take quite a bit of messing around to do (black mage has a specific ability you need to scroll down to; I had to repeatedly scroll up and down until I got to it with the confirm box out).

For example: Once you have access to a time mage, get enough points for haste (it shouldn't be many). Go into the job menu, select Haste to learn it. Before choosing yes, hold square and press down. The cursor should be in some other odd ability. Select yes. There you go! 99999 JP! Have fun. :thumb: This works with every mage job except calculator, and also works for very-cool jobs like Ninja and Samurai.

If you have any other questions about this trick just ask me.

Also when I did that, The random rule was on, and I got lucky enough to get the ifrit card, but I also got the odin card in my hand aswell. So I lost both of those cards to rinoa's dad. But I got odin and rinoas card in the next card game battle with him. Then I went to FH to get ifrit back, and it took like 20 games bfore he used it. Then I got quezacatol(sp?) from their mayor. now I just need to get gilgamesh. Then I'll start that queen of cards thing to get kiros' card and everything else.

Yah, BLM are a great class, you'll be getting invites for parties as soon as you put your seek flag up. Around my level the mobs can use the tier 4 spells like Thunder IV and Aero IV, they do around 500 damage to me, and then they can use Thundaga III which does even more ><

I've cancelled my subscription though, I should've said that as well. The only way to get to a decent XP level in that game is to play for hours and hours on end, and it gets rather tiring.

My brother and sister play it though. :)

I almost bought WoW. I have a couple friends that used to play it a ton, but in the end it would cost me ~$100 for the game, subscription, and mic, so I decided against it in favor of simply playing older, cheaper, and better PSX games.

Also, none of those friends play anymore.

But FFXI is pretty cheap now, and its pretty popular on here. Maybe after I get some money... then again, probably not though.

So, in FFV do you buy magic, or if you have the white mage or black mage job, does the person learn magic?

Also What do I do at that graveyard of ships? I already got the world map and now I don't know what to do.

you do buy magic, but there are some you can find. you can only buy 3 summons though, so you have to find the remaining ones. they are all quite well hidden.

in the ship graveyard, you basically need to cross the ships and get to the end. you'll have problems if you're using an emulator when you get to the part where you're underwater, cos you cant see anything. just remove some layers to solve this, or find a guide on the internet for how many steps to take to go somewhere.

There is a bit of a learning curve with Tactics, the beginning is pretty hard if you don't know what you're doing or level up much.

There are two kinds of battles, story and random... to answer your question. Yes, there are random battles.

The tutorial isn't all that helpful, just try out lots of jobs and abilities and strategies, figure out what works, its all part of the fun of the game.

One of the hardest battles in the game is the... 4th, I think it is. The one that opens with Wiegraf threatening the archer, and then leaving. That battle is ridiculous. So no, it's not just you. That game is very difficult.

DeusExMachina

Well, for a while, yes. But there are some VERY difficult battles later on. Like, unnaturally so. But once you get TG Cid, the game is effectively over in terms of difficulty.

I didn't say hardest, I said one of the hardest. There are definitely harder battles later on, but that battle in the beginning is also really tough, especially if you've never played the game before.

Yeah, the battle after the woods in the beginning is hard too, then Rat Cellar is also hard, but I find it a little easier, especially if you use monks.

That Wiegraf fight 1 on 1 is easy as hell, if you know how to do it.

The hardest fights are with Celia and Lede I think... especially if you try to steal. But overall I think the first chapter has the hardest battles.

Usually the end is considered pretty easy, but I still lose to Balk on occassion...

I think I'll replay that game sometime and use the jobs I never used much, like Samurai, instead of pwning with Calculators and Lancers.

The one on one against Wiegraf is impossible - but if you do it right, it's remarkably hard to lose. I'd say the battle with Celia/Lede/Elmdor atop Riovanes is the hardest in the game, because it all depends solely on luch. I've been 20 levels higher than the enemy and still had to retry that battle five times.

I'd suggest killing the wizards first... they can do the most damage, and if this is the battle I'm thinking of, Delita and Algus kill the archer on top, so don't bother with it.

That battle is pretty easy considering you only need to get off one attack (Ramza with two swords on Wiegraf). But if you're trying to steal the Cacusha and Barette... I must have tried over 30 times, I went back to older files to level up a ton, got different accessories... everything, its impossible I think.

Thanks for the tips man. :thumb:

Hopefully I can get through this and progress on with the game.

Rant: the beginning of RPG's are my least favorite part of the game. I don't like how you suck really bad and can be killed by any monster in 2 hits and it takes you 3 hits to kill the monster. So when you're about to die you use your only potion and then kill the monster with 1/4 of your life, then you have to fight more monsters who are harder  .
I start to enjoy RPG's when the story starts to progress, when you've gotten the hang of the battle system(equpping items and all that stuff), you have characters who can heal and and actually do over 100 damage(yay), and when you have a lot of chartacters. Then it's all good from there. I just got to "starting to get fun" place in FFV.

MAthiAS

Monks are arguably the strongest (physically) job in the game. Their punches are brutal, and Chakra and Revive are insanely useful. The only stronger class would be Knight once you start getting Chaos Blades and Excaliburs. I almost always use Punch Art as msecondary ability for every character.

Monks are very useful in FFV. That is probably one of the best jobs that I have. They punch the enemy twice, dealing a lot of damage. But once you get the ability "two-hand" for the knight, then you do double damage so I'd say that they are equally as powerful.

Monks are very useful in FFV. That is probably one of the best jobs that I have. They punch the enemy twice, dealing a lot of damage. But once you get the ability "two-hand" for the knight, then you do double damage so I'd say that they are equally as powerful.
I beat the game with nothing but monks.

Word. FFVI is just amazing. I miss being like, 7 years old and playing that at my friends house until 2 in the morning at a sleepover. Good times.

Edit: Apparently this is the 46th time I've posted in this thread.

Hell yeah man. When it came out I never had enough money to buy it so I would rent it at blockbuster(this was back when they only allowed 3 day rentals). So I would basically get home from school on friday, go to blockbuster with my mom, bring it home, and id play it nonstop during the weekend. I will never forget those times. :thumb:

Haha, I remember being like that, except for me it was with Tactics. My friend bought a PSX just to play that game, and we had a race to see who could beat it first. He won, because he stayed home from school to play one day

That cheating bastard!

I remember when FF7 came out for pc and i got it, it kept on freezing right before the video when the first reactor explodes(turned out about 2 years later it was the true motion video codec wasnt updated, i didnt know much about comps back then). so i ended up taking it back. that was like in summer 97 or so. I never owned a psx, so i have FF7 and 8 for pc(and now i have a ps2 so whatever). Eventually, I did buy ff7 back again, and played through it, but didnt have the same effect as when it first came out. in fact i like 8 a lot better than 7, and people tend to hate that one.

VI still owns all of them though.

I was thinking about doing that, but I want to master a lot of the abilities, like monk, knight, white mage, black mage, and thief.

Me too! When i first played it i ended up walking into the invisible barrier separating the castle and the world map. I remember when you had to use the Runic blade when you were just with locke and celes trying to get through that one cave. When i first played through i didnt understand what runic actually did, so i ended up beating that tunnel armor boss with brute force, which was close as crap. Also, when I first saw the magitek armor marching through the snow, i just KNEW it was gonna be an amazing game.

also the ff7 commercial, i remember the slogan was like "and if you fail, you can always press the reset button" :thumb:

God, I know what you mean. Kinda off topic, but when ocarina of time was released, i had a pizza party after school on the release date. I was so determined to get out of that party that i told them (after eating 3 slices) i was going to the supermarket with my mom. so i ended up running through the halls and i ran across the schoolyard to get home(i live on the border of the school district) with my huge black backpack bouncing all over the place. and there to await me on my bed, limited edition ocarina of time.

haha yeah. I remember the weekend i got FF8 for the pc, I had a similar video problem that i had with ff7, only in 8, it was the part where you have to maneuver squall around the big parade. the game always quit out on that part, and it pissed me off. i also remember it being superbowl sunday. anyway i got so mad i ran out of my computer room and i stubbed my right big toe on the side of one of my chairs and it split my toenail rght down the middle(ugh sorry you had to read that). so i took off the next day of school, went to my friends house next door with a better computer, transferring my save, beat that whole part. and then, well, i pwned after that. :thumb:

I couldn't get into it at all. The battle system was atrocious. Chrono Trigger had a more traditional system with ability learning and MP costs, whereas Chrono Cross had those terrible slots. The thing that really got to me was how there were very few abilities unique to each character. In Trigger, every character and 10+ abilities and dozens of dual techs, while Cross had about three per character. I hated it.

But aside from all that, I thought Chrono Cross had an excellent plot.

I always use a Summoner with Math Skill. Zodiac and every spell baby! That's really the only great generic towards the end, but sometimes you can kill every enemy in one turn. Don't see Orlandu doing that!

I used to use Reis a lot as an archer too... Archers aren't all that great but I have fun using them for some reason.
