I wanna learn how to play piano, but can't afford a big piano, so I think I'm just going to buy a keyboard... my budget is going to be around 300$...

What should I look for in a keyboard that would be most piano like?

Also, has anyone here taught themselves how to play piano??? Is it possible? I can read sheet music, and I know me some theory...

Hi janyeno,

It's hard to replicate the touch of a real piano on soft keys, the hammer action keys will set you back a lot more. There is no such thing as an age limit for learning how to play an instrument, it depends on your motivation and goals.
Sight reading is useful for learning new songs, or things you can't catch by ear. However, I consider sheet music more of a learning tool, after you've mastered a technique you will find improvising on your own more meaningful.
I'm behind Kurzweil, Roland and Korg for keyboards, and for a learning tool you might want to try Yamaha, they have a series for learning plus their keys may not be hammer action but they have touch sensitivity. Best is to try a specific range within your budget and compare the diferrent models in the market. keyboard and piano are very different. they feel so much different. i would only use a keyboard for jus messing around and making strange effects and stuff and i dont do that any more because my keyboard has gone into the loft. didnt use it in my room enough.

I highly recommend Technics as a good make of keyboard.

I use my keyboard when writing songs, as I find it sooo much easier to write songs on the keyboard then on guitar.. but then maybe thats cos I'm not a guitarist, hehe.

tell your parents how seriouse you are about it and try to get an actuall piano

for 300 dollars it might be better to save up because it is better to get something good to learn on with keyboards but it all depends and how serious you are on keyboards or piano.
I taught myself still am teaching myself where you look for any tips or something on that?
