i miss old sum 41, back with there spikey hair, red white and blue wristbands, and famous stars and straps shirts. All Killer No Filler was my first punkish album and i loved Sum 41 as they were my favorite band for a good 3 years. No matter how hard i try i can't get into the new "metal/rock" sum 41. What happened to the bouncy punk pop songs they used to write like "In Too Deep" "Fat Lip" "Makes No Difference" and "Nothing On My Back". They were fun loving goof balls and that's what made them so cool. Now there all "serious". That's what we have punk rock and emo for. Don't get me wrong, theyve really grown as musicians i just wish they didnt change so much and lose there punk pop ways to do it.

well they're attitude is still very much the same as it was in the old days, you notice this when you see them live now. But I can't say I agree with you, I prefer new Sum 41, as I've said before in this thread, Sum 41's music evolved with my taste, so I'm happy about that. I still love old Sum 41 but I think songs like Makes No Difference and In Too Deep are just a little bit too poppy for me to handle sometimes, depends what kind of mood I'm in.
This thread is now 41 pages long. That's awesome. :thumb:

they just got into other types of music, thus becoming DTLI and C and there you go

for me, it wasn't that their music evolved with my taste, it was that my taste evolved with their music, I listened to DTLI and them my brother introduced me to Shadows Fall for the second time and then I loved metal, the first time I couldn't stand it, now I listen to bands like Killswitch Engage, Between The Buried And Me, Bury Your Dead, and some other great metal artists, but I never got into rock, it makes me mad, I like Pop-punk, punk, and metal, weird, but DTLI and C are the albums that helped me on my way to heavier things. This is why they are my favorite ever bands, they kept me from rapping with rappers and popping with poppers.

saw them a few months back. it was awsome. when deryk was singing pieces he was at the last line where he goes "That I am better of on my- *boom*" someone threw a shoe at him and he fell over. he then got up and said " it's ok i didn't need that tooth anyways" . quite a funny experience and i thought i'd share that with you guys because i'm bored.

yeah, with the unedited version it was Cross Your Ts and Gouge Your Eyes which was just a bunch of random video crap of them doing their thing. With the edited version it was them Live at the Astoria, it was a live show that was really short but really cool. Sucks that you didn't get one.

i agree, no reason would have been a good single. I know they would never have the bitter end as a single so that one is out of the question, but even open your eyes would have been a great single.

Pieces is a good song, but then all the stupid girls who just watch MTV hear it and think 'OH MY GOD, I LOVE SUM 41!'
Then they'll download other Sum 41 songs, like The Bitter End, Open Your Eyes, Angels with dirty faces then think 'OH MY GOD, I HATE SUM 41!'

sum 41 is my fav band and they need to relase a song like angels or no reason or open your eyes because pieces and some say are bad repreenataitons of the rest of the album. i dont watch mtv but on the radio station i listen to for rock were all to blame got minimal air time and that was prolly the best single of the 3 and 1 of the best of the album...if they wanted to sell out again wut was fine with me cuz idc but they coulda made another aknf album and not just release 2 of the 3 slowest songs from chuck. my view on chuck is also probably some wasted potential...and not enough guitar solos...

try to use less initials for normal conversation, you can use it for album titles, and spell "prolly" as "Probably", I promise that the veterans will treat you more normal if you do
your views are close to correct, but I don't think that they had wasted potential so said, I think they did a great job

going by their dvd Sake Bombs and Happy Endings, they have alot of energy and are a faily solid live band. In terms of backing vocals, i'd love to see some of their songs played closer to the CD versions (eg No Reason, Thanks For Nothing, Still Waiting...), i can't see why cone wouldn't love to really get into the songs and scream along with them like on the CDs. "THESE EYES have seen no conviction... JUST LIES and more contradiction..."
oh well. my one gripe is deryck's (sp?) voice, obviously you're not gonna be the same live as in the studio but man some songs he should really work on.

DUDE!!!
The other night, I had this dream-
Every night, I'd hear really loud Sum 41 music outside. Of course, I had no objection. One night, I went out to see who/what it was. Sum 41 drove by in a little blue car. I chased them down. They got out, and I said that I play bass. They went to my house to see/hear me play.
That's all I remember.
Then, today, my band had band practice. I got my amp and bass and stuff, and went out on the front porch to wait to be picked up. I walked out the back door, and I was going to the driveway towards the front of the house, a guy drove buy in a jeep, blasting Fat Lip!! It took me a second to realize what that meant. When I realized it, I'm like "Oh ****!!" then I ran down the driveway. I had my bass and amp and a pop and a PSP, so I didn't go very fast. Unfortunately, the guy drove away before I could see who it was.

Heyloo guys 'n' girls. Thank GOD there is actually a thread for Sum 41. One thing really bugs me about the band: NOBODY SEEMS TO LIKE THEM!!! This is immensely irritating for me, as they were (along with The Offspring and Limp Bizkit) one of three main bands that got me REALLY into Rock music in the first place. I think they're great.
My fav album is probably "Does This Look Infected?", probably because I prefer heavier rock stuff. I also think the band's uncommon mix of Metal and Punk was pretty admirable on this album, as I like some stuff from both genres. However, I do think that at times it sounded like a punk rock band trying to be metal, and I suppose in a way it sorta was... this sounded much more apparent on "Chuck", which is in my opinion the band's worst album to date. This doesn't mean I think it's crap - I don't - but I think "...Infected" caught them at their best.
Also, is it just me, or is "The Bitter End" a complete Metallica rip-off??!! That intro is oddly reminiscent of "Blackened", and most of the rest of the song - ESPECIALLY the chorus - is a pretty accurate clone of "Battery". So much so that Derek manages to perfectly replicate Hetfield's savage growl of "BAT-TE-RY!!!" in his version, "BIT-TER--END!!!".
But this aside, I am genuinely a fan of Sum 41. Without them, I probably would not be the avid rock-consumer that I am today.

First off I'd like to welcome you to our thread good little n00b, in this thread you will not be criticized, insulted, or anything else, we value your opinion and we would like to hear what you have to say, in case you don't already know, this thread is basically my home base, it's almost the only place I post anymore. As long as I'm still on this site there will always be at least one Sum 41 Thread out there.
DTLI? was definitely some cool crap, but Chuck wasn't their worst album, they don't have a worst album, sorry, where I value your opinion I don't think that you are quite right about this. Sorry if I offended you by saying that.
Yes, we've all heard that The Bitter End is a remake of Battery, and personally, we don't care anymore, this just proves to us that they are getting more talented and more able to right like bands that others like already, GO SUMS!!!
I would also be nothing without them, they are basically my life. I love these guys.

I really like Sum41, i think DTLI was an awesome album. When i first got it, it was all i could listen too. Also i think Chuck is a good album, its a bit of a change but i think its good. They have a good 'variety' of music, its awesome.

I really hope that they don't play much from Chuck, I honestly thought it was a terrible album with only a few good songs.
Going back to the original topic....Sum 41 is the greatest rock band EVER!!!!! I love all of their songs...and in particular the entire CD of All Killer No Filler. I got the DVD Introduction To Destruction finally and the London, Astoria concert is so much cooler unedited than it is edited from DTLI? because in the edited version they cut out the entire song Handle This because there's two girld kissing the entire song, stupid...Anyways, this really hot chick with giant breasts flashes Dave in the Fat Lip Video Outtakes and he has a size contest with her, I thought it was hilarious

AKNF>DTLI>HHOP>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Chuck
mainly because AKNF was the album that got me into punk and punk pop and just good music in general, DTLI is pretty close musically but it usually wont fit every mood im in, but is a great album. HHOP was a great album for such young kids they were at the time but im glad they improved, and finally i hate the new Rock and Metal Sum 41 so Chuck is by far the worst. IMO

as far as variety in different kinds of songs Chuck wins, but DTLI is second very closely, AKNF was okay as far as variety goes, but HHOP was either metalish harder stuff or pop-punk, not too much variety what so ever

Derycks guitar ability is a little worse then Billie Joe's.....for singing and playing he's decent but not great......but unlike Green Day, Sum 41 have Dave who kicks major as's to also play guitar, i personally think Sum 41 have the best musiciainship lineup with the 4 members thing where one guitar player sings. But yea, they're my favorite band. Dave Baksh is the best guitarist I've ever seen or heard. Stevo is the best drummer I've ever seen or heard, and Cone is the best bassist I've ever seen or heard. Deryck is a great vocalist/guitarist, and they all put on one hell of a show.

Subject: sum ripoff, huh??
Whether or not Sum 41 "stole parts" from other songs, I've barely even heard, or heard of, the bands you accuse them of stealing from.
There's only so much that can be written before it all starts to sound the same. Every time I write something, it sounds like a real song. And I'm not stealing anything.
Who cares if Deryck looks like someone?? It's just how he is. It's not like he had surgery or something.
You act like you know everything about music, and now, just because you don't like Sum 41, you're making a site about them too. You're just a ****ing retarded jackass who's probably like 30 and still lives with his mom

i can see similarities in about half of those songs, but you could do that same thing with almost any good band.
and the fact is, billy joe can't play guitar. half of their songs use the same chord progressions. it's always either g-d-e-c or c-g-a-f. and he doesn't even play that very well. anyone can pick two simple chord progressions (that have already been used in 24385345^10 other songs) and play them over and over again. that isn't talent.

1. sum 41 is not pop punk
True. But they were. Half Hour Of Power and All Killer No Filler were pop-punk. Between 2001 (AKNF) and 2003 (DTLI), I can't tell you what they did, but they obviously changed their music. Does This Look Infected? was sort of a mix of rock and pop-punk kinds of music, and Chuck is all rock.
They may not be pop-punk currently, but those times are what they are/were known for. I myself would have loved them staying punk-ish but it's their band and they can run it as they see fit.

Cone doesn't usually show off, but he has some cool parts on all the albums, but on Chuck there's a song called Welcome To Hell where he does a 4 second bass solo, but it's good even though it's short

Yeah, the bonus tracks Subject to Change, Noots and Moron are pretty good. Subject to Change sounds similar to No Reason, in the way the chorus is sung (and Deryck uses that "so how long, has this gone, I don't see this ending" in Subject to Change as well). The guitar to Noots sounds really similar to the guitar in Still Waiting.

go to purevolume.com and search for Sum 41, there will be three, click on the one that says something in close relation to "Sum 41 (Real)" and it's the only song in there, or you can buy the Fantastic 4 soundtrack, or you can buy the 7" vinyl single of We're All To Blame and it's on side B, or you can download it, or you can have someone else download it and e-mail or IM it to you, hope that helps, it's an amazing tune, it's also on the UK version of Chuck
WWVII Part I & II and Reign In Pain (Heavy Metal Jamboree) great songs, they're on the UK versions of DTLI and they're in the DVD under (if memory serves correct) Pain For Pleasure, but you have to have Cross You're T's And Gouge Your I's, it's not on Live At the Astoria In London..hope this all helps

I didn't say "good music", I said "hard parts", read next time and you might catch that, anyways, he's probably just lazy, besides, his parts are harder than alot of punk related bands, and it doesn't matter, majority of S41 fans don't care about bass anyways, I do, but that doesn't mean a whole lot

okay, I'm going to clear this up once, Noots and STC are bonus Chuck tracks, but Moron was done as a side project for Rock Against Bush Vol. 1, it has absolutely no relation to Chuck whatsoever except for the band that recorded it, anyways, yeah, it kinda chaps my hide that STC and NR are so similar, but I don't really care too much, NR is a great song

I've done that already, and Xangazon just used links from Amazon, so if you want details go look there

Wondering...is it true that Dave and the "big-nosed one" Deryck use Rio Grande BBQ pickups?

Yeah, it was funny.
I doubt we'll see another video like that from them though.
I think they've turned down the more "mature" road like you could say a lot of other bands have done.

Has anyone else seen the new video for Some Say? It's okay, not as good as We're All To Blame or Pieces, it's kinda depressing and weird, like, it takes place on some kind of board game looking thingy, I don't quite remember it was about a month ago that I saw it.
I got the official Does This Look Infected? Lighter today along with Bring The Noise, their unofficial DVD Biography. It's really cool, check it out.

You can download Sum 41's Tribute to Queen for the song Killer Queen from sumpieces.com now. I downloaded it, it's wasn't sum 41's usual style, it's hard to hear any Sum 41 in it at all, but it's deffinitly them, they just left it as Queen style and recorded it themselves, it's friggin GOOD. Go download it now.

Bassic Bassist, how obsessed are you? Do you like any other bands?
And I think that Deryk with Avril Lavign is the begining of the end of sum 41. This has probably already been discusses but I havn't looked at this thread in a while.
And a few pages back I saw people bashing Cone for not being a good bassist. Your all wrong because he fits with sum 41, knows theory, and is better then all of you. Sometimes it seems that when people critizize a muscision, they always are judging on how hard his stuff is to play. And unless Cones doin a solo you can barly hear the bass because theres 2 guitars and drums and vocals.

first of all, not that obsessed, they're just my favorite band and I would give anything to meet them face to face
second, I like hundreds of other bands, music is my life, not just Sum 41
third, I don't think Deryck would leave Sum 41 because of Avril, Dave's married and he's still there, and Deryck would be nothing without the guys
fourth, I didn't bash Cone, I stood up for him and I love his stuff, some of it is actually pretty difficult, and I don't actually think he knows theory, sorry

Deryk probably could do well on his own knowing hes marrying a popstar, went out with Paris Hilton, and everyone in the media knows who he is.
And its easy to figure out when someone uses theory because you can look at their songs and tell, still waiting obviously has theory to it, and so do others

okay, so alot of people know him, so what the **** would he do on his own? nothing, he'd just get another band, and the one he has, he likes, so don't worry about it

don't know if anyone has posted these tracks, but you can find Rock You (Cover of Helix)at www.foq-crew.tk
Killer Queen (cover of Queen - soon to be released on the Killer Queen tribute album). I think you can find that on a board at ww.sumpieces.com

He does know theory because someone who knows theory can look at his basslines and determine it. The two tabs I looked at (still waiting and hell song) both use theory. And theory is a really good thing to learn because it makes you a musician, not a bass player. Bass players need to know theory, I havn't looked in bass forums since I play guitar but I'm positive they would say that theory is somthing you need to know. Also, its dumb to walk around saying that you write good stuff because someone will listen to your songs and some might say that there shiit.

there's always someone who won't like something somone else writes, but I actually do write really cool stuff, and the bassline to Still Waiting is nothing special and the one to Hell song is all eigth notes of the same note eight times in a row except a random not every now and then, dude, seriously, he writes good stuff, but I doubt he ever learned theory

To break down the talent level in Sum 41....
Steve: Amazing, great rock drummer.
Dave: Same thing but guitar
Deryck: Good guitarist, but not great.
Cone: Either he can play like a 12 year old who has played for 3 months or he only plays like that when he's being recorded.

wow, you got Dave and Steve right, obviously you guys aren't even trying to listen to what cone does, listen to what he did for Mr. Amsterdam, he has talent, he just does what most bassists do, he plays the guitar part an octave lower, but he's a good writer and he's really talented
and Deryck has gotten tons better since his vocal chords ruptured, it sounds weird but it's true, I can't wait to hear his voice for the next album

In Total Guitar the band admitted to not know any theory. For example they could not identify a pentatonic scale or notes on the fretboard.
They play by ear and by experience of working out how to get a good sound mainly.

dave knows his theory. i know that much. i doubt cone knows much more than basic scales though. most of what he plays is root notes.
Drums-R-MiLyfe

is bass not all root notes? as in on guitar youre using two fingers but the root note is the one played on the lowest of the strings played and commonly played with the index finger

if a bassist is playing root notes, it means he's just playing the root of what the guitarist is playing. it's boring and basically pointless.

It is nowhere near pointless.
It makes the sound a lot more "full", and helps to keep rythm when the guitarist does anything different.

Guitar sounds so hollow without the bass backing it up.
TheBassicBassist

bass isn't all root notes, it can be very different, it can do chords and power chords and all of that crap and it can also be the lead if your good, but it's not pointless to ANY extent

but its not pointless at all

The point I was trying to make about Cone was that all he does it root notes, and it bores the living sh*t out of me. Christ, just once he should do a little something different.
