So i was looking around at all these "official threads" and noticed someone, no Black Sabbath thread?? I think out of all these bands these guys really need a main thread. They are one of the best rock bands ever. You can discuss anything Black Sabbath in here, but do not spam and flame.

Tony Iommi was the only guitarist in Black Sabbath, and Randy Rhoads had nothing to do with it. Therefore, do not say something like this: http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6836385&postcount=3155

Here's a very detailed Black Sabbath recommendation post originally made by Lord Brummington.

Ok, seeing as we get alot of people asking in here what albums/songs are good as stepping-stones to the world of Black Sabbath, I figured I'd make this post then get you guys to link it whenever someone makes a post along the lines of:

'' 'sup you funky Sabbath d00dz, whats a good album to get by Black Sabbath?''

So...here we go.

Albums - Ozzy Years

I'm going to keep my opinions out of this part of the thread

Most of the guys in here have said that Black Sabbath and Paranoid are the best albums to get first, to be honest you'd be best buying them in order.

An album to avoid from the Ozzy years is Live at Last, its a crappy bootlegg and you'd be better off buying Past Lives, or Re-union. Also if possibly, try not to buy the 1996 Castle Remasters of the albums, the quality on them is poor, worse than my vinyl copies.

Dio Years

With only a choice of 4 albums, its not hard picking which one to buy. They're all as good as each other, but I'd highly recommend Live Evil as a first purchase from the Dio years, then the rest (Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules and Dehumanizer) in that order.

Tony Martin Years

I've only heard the albums Headless Cross and TYR from the Tony Martin years, he also featured on The Eternal Idol, Cross Purposes, Forbidden and Cross Purposes Live .

I've heard snippets of Cross Purposes Live, I'd recommend it if you're after a live album thats not got Ozzy on it.

From this era I'd highly recommend TYR

The Rest

Born Again

From what I've heard, this album only really appeals to the hardcore Sabbath fans, and fans of anything that contains Ian Gillan. The songs that I've heard are good, but a bit of a let-down from the Dio years.

7th Star

This is actually a Tony Iommi solo album under the Black Sabbath banner, its a bit hit and miss in places, but worthy of being in your collection.

Compilations/Best Of's

This is simple, if you want a good compilation album, buy The Best of Black Sabbath, it gives you alot of Ozzy songs, along with a few Dio and Ian Gillan songs I think.

If you're an Ozzy pureist, I'd recommend We Sold Our Soul For Rock n Roll, although it only covers upto the Sabotage album.

Live Albums

The best live album is probably Re-Union, with Live Evil, Past Lives, Cross Purposes Live and Live at Last coming behind, in that order.

Now then, the moment you've all been waiting for, this is my list for which order to buy the albums in (the ones that I have):

Volume 4
Black Sabbath
Never Say Die!
Live Evil
Heaven and Hell
Master of Reality
Sabotage
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Technical Ecstasy
Headless Cross
TYR
Mob Rules
Dehumanizer
Paranoid

Songs

If you're cheap and lazy, here's a list of songs to download to give you some inspiration for which album to buy: (not in order)

Tomorrow's Dream (Volume 4, Ozzy)
Supernaut (Volume 4, Ozzy)
Neon Knights (Heaven and Hell, Dio)
The Law Maker (TYR, Tony Martin)
Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath, Ozzy)
Iron Man (Paranoid, Ozzy)
The Sign of the Southern Cross (Mob Rules, Dio)
TV Crimes (Dehumanizer, Dio)
Air Dance (Never Say Die!, Ozzy)
Gypsy (Technical Ecstasy, Ozzy)
Headless Cross (Headless Cross, Tony Martin)
Jerusalem (TYR, Tony Martin)
Trashed (Born Again, Ian Gillan)
7th Star (7th Star, Glen Hughes [I think, my memory is hazey at the moment] )
Megalomania (Sabotage, Ozzy)
Sabbra Cadabra (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Ozzy)
The Warning (Black Sabbath, Ozzy)
Hand of Doom (Paranoid, Ozzy)
After Forever (Master of Reality, Ozzy)

Yeh...I could go on for awhile recommending songs.

Well, I hope this post has been usefull for some of you, any questions feel free to ask them, and any of the regulars, feel free to add songs to the song list etc...

I would also say Iron Man, but that would give away my secret that the only Black Sabbath album I've heard is Paranoid.

There's no Official Black Sabbath thread for the exact reason this one was started...Official threads are created to keep the number of threads about a band down, and since Black Sabbath doesn't have too many, there's no official thread for it. Or, at least, that's what I gather from it.

sabbath make zeppelin sound light, but they both used to play more bluesy based styles

favourite sabbath song is probably the origional version of war pigs that is on ozzy's "the ozzman cometh"

I think thats because most people havent heard anything but ozzy era sabbath. :(

My five favourite Sabbath songs are: Symptom Of The Universe, Sign Of The Southern Cross, The Shining, Computer God and Children Of the Grave.... Mainly for the reason that they all have balls that are comparable to the size of large oranges.

i really think for anyone interested in sabbath should find a great song for what they like musically, for the usual slow but heavy riffs , listen to master of reality, for the more epic and ambitious, give sabbath bloody sabbath and sabotage a go, for power-ballads, listen to anything from after ian gillan left up until before dio came back, for the faster stuff, try heaven and hell, mob rules, and dehumanizer,

key tracks

black sabbath (black sabbath)
n.i.b (black sabbath)
paranoid (paranoid)
iron man (paranoid)
war pigs (paranoid)
electric funeral (paranoid)
children of the grave (mor)
sweet leaf (mor)
lord of this world (mor)
into the void (mor)
snowblind (vol4)
tomorrows dream (vol4)
supernaut (vol4)
sabbath bloody sabbath (sbs)
a national acrabat (sbs)
who are you (sbs)
looking for today (sbs)
killing yourself to live (sbs)
hole in the sky (sabotage) - kick a$$ riff, sounds sort of like slower powerslave era iron maiden, real slower.
symptom of the universe (sabotage)
am i going insane (sabotage)
dirty women (technical ecstasy) - lol i think tony was using too much on this album but still a good record.
never say die (nsd)
johnny blade (nsd)
shock wave (nsd) - one of my favs- killer intro, great lyrics, goes get a bit bowie-ish after a while.
air dance (nsd)
heaven and hell (hah)
die young (hah)
neon knights (hah)
children of the sea (hah) or is that on mob rules ???????
the mob rules (mob rules) - even though it says KILL OZZY, on the front cover-.
turn up the night (mob rules) really strange for a band that done somethinglike war pigs or spiral architect- but straight up rock.
computer god (dehumanizer)
tv crimes (dehumanizer)
I (dehumanizer)
kiss of death (forbidden)
psycho man (reunion)

sorry for the long post but i get worked up about sabbath and when i saw this thread -WOW- P.S. you can tell i'm not really a fan of much of the 80's stuff.

thanks man, there hard to find these days coz most of em arent my age,
i dont think theres another 17 yo australian dude that likes sabbath as much as me, i used to just sit with my 'gibson iommi sg 400' in my room and play there entire back cataloge along with the lp or cd, until i dicovered that my ex bandmates finally accepted ''high pitched'' voices in there terms as cool and not gay (absolutly no offence whatsoever to the world wide homosexual community) and could appricate guitar that was real and not just computerised (with the exeption of never say die) so now we have changed musical direction and are now a real metal band that will put up a fight against any mainstream posers or even guys just like us, we have a point to prove to the world all because of the sound of rain , tolling bells , and the most powerful , soul crushing, bone rattling first chord of Black Sabbath, which i heard when i was about four years old, they have never been matched, nver will, and just like sabbath we will NEVER SAY DIE :thumb:

If I'm right, its the album they've been calling the 8th Star?

Was due out in 1996, but got shunned for a Mark I Black Sabbath re-union.

Tyr is fantastic. All lyrics are based around Norse Myths, which i am very much into. Tony's voice is wondeful on there. Ulike most modern day bands, black sabbath actually reaches into your mind and pulls out your soul, twisting it into realms of the imagination never before, or even since, explored by humanity. Master of Reality has got to be one of the greatest albums of all time, although not the most popular (that medal goes to Paranoid), certainly one of the most surreal... and even an anti-religion person like myself was drawn to explore the regions of life after death and even sought to gain a better understanding of christianity. A stimulant to the mind and the soul, a refreshment for the more macabre and morbid imaginations of humanity... without sabbath my life would be an empty wasteland void of all existensialist thought, but as it is, my worldview is constantly fuelled by the beauty of Orchid. To me, Master of Reality is truly that.

Any heavy metal band that can write a good classical song (Changes) must be good. >_>

Sabbath rocks, though I've only heard Volume 4 and Paranoid... No point in listing my favorites, as I'd be listing every song in paranoid, and most of Volume 4.

They are technically classic rock, but they have the more modern heavy metal sound.

Black Sabbath had one guitarist named Iommi, even during their Dio years.
Ozzy uses a guitarist named Zakk Wylde but there was one before him (maybe even two) but I don't know the difference and I think one of the guitarists were killed in a plane crash or something, is that right.
Personally, I really can't tell the difference between the guitarists

ozzy's solo career started with randy rhoads, then i believe a guy filled in for a tour, but jake e lee (ozzy's most overlooked guitarist) took the job for a while, then jake left and zakk came on board, zakk left at some point in the 90's and ozzy recruited a guy who used to be a student of rhoads back when he taught guitar.

Almost right.

Black Sabbath have only ever had Tony Iommi, he IS Black Sabbath, without him there's nothing to the band. He quit in 1970 to play for Jeffro Tull, he was with them for about 3 weeks then he returned to Black Sabbath.

When Ozzy was sacked from the band, he started his solo career with Randy Rhoads, who was killed in a plane crash in 1982. Then on the 'Speak of the Devil' tour, there was a replacement guitarist who I forget the name of.

Jake.E Lee was on Bark at the Moon(1985?) and The Ultimate Sin.(1986/7?)

Zakk Wylde was on No Rest for the Wicked(1988), No More Tears(1991?), Live and Loud(1993), Ozzmosis(1995) and Down to Earth(2001?).

There was a rumour flying around that Jerry Cantrell is supposed to on the next Ozzy solo album, but I have no idea how true that is.

Ozzy has about 5 - 10 years left in him max.

Dio has said that he'd like to work with Iommi again, but he doesn't want to work with Geezer or Bill.

I think the original line-up have about 2 more tours left in them, then Black Sabbath will most likely call it a day.

Although, Black Sabbath will only finish doing their thing, when Tony Iommi decides to call it a day, seeing as he IS Sabbath. He owns all the rights to the name etc...

When I went in 2002 at Donington, I think it was if you were 12 or under, you had to be accompanied by an adult, over the age of 12 was fine.

Something along those lines, but don't expect Sabbath to headline next year if Ozzy gets a new album out anytime soon.

I agree with you unflea, although I like Sabbath still when Dio joined, Mob Rules being an awesome album, the spirit of the band when Ozzy was with them cannot be matched! The first album I heard of theirs was Paranoid and Hand of Doom is basically responsible for me learning guitar! My favourite songs would have to be;

Hand Of Doom
The Wizard
N.I.B
Fluff
The Warning

As a side question, does anyone know of which release of Black Sabbath (the album) the song The Warning was released on? As I understand it it is not on every release but some kind of special edition unless im mistaken! Which is a shame because that song really demonstrates Iommi's ablilties IMO, it almost feels like an improvised track in some places....Awesome! (sorry for the long post)

Brew
11-03-2004, 02:12 PM
To my knowledge, The Warning was on both the European and the USA release of Black Sabbath.

The differences in the album were with the songs Evil Woman and Wicked World.

The Europeans got Evil Woman on the original release of Black Sabbath, because an American band/artist wrote the song and there was something to do with copywrites that they couldn't be arsed sorting out, so they put Wicked World on the American release of Black Sabbath.

So we got Evil Woman, and America got Wicked World, neither got both.

But these days, the re-masters of Black Sabbath have all the tracks on:

Black Sabbath
The Wizard
Behind the Wall of Sleep
N.I.B
Evil Woman
Wicked World
Sleeping Village/The Warning

Also, The Warning is one of my fav. Sabbath songs to play on bass, there's so much room for improvising, its great.

I highly recommend you don't get the 1996 Castle re-masters, in two words:

they're shite.

The band didn't ask them to be re-mastered, it was a record company thing.

Getting the box-set would be a good start, a bit expensive but you get every song from every album.

Even ''Blow on a Jug'' at the end of ''The Writ'' from the Sabotage album.

Blow on a Jug is basicly Ozzy and Bill fooling around in the studio with a piano, its about 32seconds long and is only on the old vinyl pressings, old re-masters and the new box-set editions of Sabotage.

If you have a vinyl copy of Sabotage, at the end of The Writ, turn your volume up loud to hear the short song.

during the recording of sabbath bloody sabbath, bill experimented highly and "highly: ;). one day he brought in a metal bathtub, filled it with water and stuck and anvil in there and smacked the anvil making sounds. and those sounds made it onto the album someplace at bill's demand.

I don't have that best of, but at a guess I'd say its either Tony Martin or Glen Hughes.

I like Dio, not only is he a short little dude, but he's got a great voice.

Winmx.

I'm using it right now to get some Blind Guardian, the songs I downloaded were:

Born Again
Trashed
Zero the Hero
7th Star

They're all pretty good, with 7th Star being my fav. out of that list.

Sabbath & Zeppelin do have their similarities and although they came from the same area(Birmingham,England...'cept for Jones & Page) at the same time and Zeppelin definitely came first but the big difference is that Sabbath never ripped off anyone's music ever and Zepp pretty much stole from other musicians left and right.

they do a little bit, but not too much

Black Sabbath rocked when Ozzy was still with them. I think the dumbest thing any band has ever done was when they kicked him out. In my opinion, Ozzy is the best singer/musician there ever was, and still is. :thumb:

if toni hadnt decided to get rid of him there wouldnt be great songs like crazy train and no more tears, there would be no ozzfest, there would be no ozzy poster on my wall, instead there would be a sabbath one with toni in the midle (even though guitarists shouldnt be, *vol 4 tour*) and most of all they would probably be dead

Its not hard, seeing as he was never in Black Sabbath.

Brew
11-05-2004, 05:07 PM
Please stop mentioning Randy Rhoads in this Black Sabbath thread, he has nothing to do with the Sabs.

Ozzy may be a god, but he didn't keep Sabbath going for 30 years, Tony did.
Ozzy got screwed up on drugs and got himself booted from the band, leaving Tony to keep things going.

For the past 20 years, Ozzy has been nothing to Black Sabbath, they did fine without him and I'd like to see a re-union tour of the MkII line up with Dio, and maybe re-unions of the later line-ups.

And Tony deserves centre stage, he IS Black Sabbath, he formed the band, kept it going through tough times, never giving up what he loves best.

shadow_stalker
11-05-2004, 05:22 PM
ozzy has done fine for past 20 years without them too.

they did do a reunion with dio back in the eightees didnt they? they made one album and dio left again

it wasnt all tony that formed sabbath him and bill were in a band together before that, ozzy and geezer were in a band before sabbath, they just got together, and before it was sabbath (during the pulka tulk days) they had a rythm guitarist called jim phillips and a saxophonist called alan clarke, so they could also claim that the had a hand in making sabbath aswell.

then there is jim simpson who was their first manager, he introduced them to alot of the jazz influences in their music aswell as some of the blues (thats all i got on him)

rising_fury

tony did write every great sabbath riff, and let's face it, if it wasn't for the riffs, sabbath would've been nothing.

and yes, i have seen the black sabbath stories 1&2 (they're sitting right next to me) they're pretty cool, but it's been a long time since i've watched vol. 2... i'm gonna pop it in right now

I still don't think Tony should get all the credit. It took all of Black Sabbath to keep it going through tough times. And Ozzy did not give up what he loves best when he got booted out; he became even better (If that's possible. :) He is and always was awesome).

Lets put it this way, Sabbath was renound for being the founding (and possibly the best) heavy metal band, mainly coz of Iommi's classic low key riffs. This still, however, made Ozzy famous because he was literally at the front of it all. When ozzy went solo later on, the only thing keeping him alive in the spotlight was studio editing. His voice was edited to sound significantly better than before when he was sabbath frontman. This aint bullsh!t. Sure Iommi wasn't much without Ozzy as well, but he sure as hell was the dominating reason both of them got where they are today (in my own, unedited opinion).

BTW, my fav songs = Behind the Wall Of Sleep, War Pigs, Iron Man, Electric Funeral, Fairies Wear Boots, Lord Of This World.........Sabbath rule!!!

Agreed. In fact, Black Sabbath has my favorite bass lines of all time. Also, they had two of the greatest metal vocalists of all time with them.

The major problem with Black Sabbath are the dumbasses who claim to be huge Sabbath fans, but only know 2 songs from Paranoid plus a few Ozzy solo songs they think are related to Black Sabbath. They ruined Sabbath for me for awhile.

My favorite albums are Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Heaven and Hell also rules, but the second half just doesn't match up to the first half. Also, I just got a couple of Bootlegs, one from Asbury Park in 75' and one from San Fransisco from '71. Both kick ***.

Thats about half of the people in this thread, it really annoys me when people say they love Sabbath, then point out their greatest hits as being their fav. songs, it just seems like everyone ignores the Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die! albums of the Ozzy-era. Both of which are fantastic, yet hugely overlooked.

Zefferon

Technical Ecstasy is a good album, I'll admit. But on the other hand it might not be mentioned because it's not that great compared to the earlier albums. Or the first 2 with Dio.

I have yet to hear Never Say Die, though.
