I'd expect a Black Sabbath tour instead.

No, it's Slayer - Soundtrack To The Apocolypse, IMO the best box set ever.

Even I'm lost on that one.

shadow_stalker

i dont think it will cost that much, but even if it does i will still buy it

i dont know what i would prefer an ozzy tour or a sabbath tour

kredkeee!
12-01-2004, 11:30 AM
I would definitely like a Sabbath tour more, just because all i know of Ozzy is No More Tears (yet great). And it would be great even if they toured without Ozzy. Dio or TMartin instead...

^^^Slayer? I don't like them much. Raining blood IS class (as said before), but.... they seem a bit too much like DUMDUMDUMDUM with drums and guitar... (just opinion dont flame me for it, i dont KNOW them very much as well)

Josh
12-01-2004, 12:38 PM
i dont think it will cost that much, but even if it does i will still buy it

i dont know what i would prefer an ozzy tour or a sabbath tour
i'd probably pay anything up to about £30 for a box set like that

shadow_stalker
12-01-2004, 01:58 PM
an ozzy with sabbath tour would probably be better, but they never do big tours of the uk (wankers), alot of the time they will do birmingham and a few others

so i think i would prefer an ozzy one, as he tours almost all of the uk areas

shadow_stalker
12-01-2004, 02:12 PM
ok this may just be me but i just listened to most of the heaven and hell album and it really did not appeal to me, i couldnt hear the inensity that sabbath had when ozzy was with them, it may have been the bad quality but i think that dio's voice is way to high pitched in some of the songs

also he sounds a bit like blaze bailey from a former version of iron maiden to me, he has the same kind of power metal voice

but again it may have been the quality of the site/sound

Brew
12-01-2004, 02:14 PM
Dio does have a voice more suited to power metal on albums, but live its alot deeper and more ''metal''.

The lyrics on H&H took a bit of a power metal turn, but not far enough for it to be classed as Power Metal.

I listened to H&H earlier when I was doing some work, I hadn't heard it all the way through for ages and I enjoyed it :)

Also, Blaze has a pretty good voice, his solo work is quite good.

shadow_stalker
12-01-2004, 02:17 PM
i still dont like him much, i will listen to some other stuff by Dio but so far im still an ozzy fan

just listened to solitude i think its much better than planet caravan

also i cant say that im a huge power metal fan (i have no idea what proper power metal is)

Brew
12-01-2004, 02:20 PM
^Good man.

Solitude > Planet Caravan.

Proper power metal? Hmm...

I'd say stuff like Helloween, Dragonforce, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody, Blackmoores Night etc...with the Blackmoores Night being more Folk Rock/Fantasy Rock than Power Metal, but still fitting into the same sub-genre of metal.

shadow_stalker
12-01-2004, 02:24 PM
my sister has a sonata arctica cd, im gonna go put it on and have a listen (after listening to some more of MOB rules)

have you heard megalomania on sabotage? its quite odd but not in the way of solitude and planet caravan

Brew
12-01-2004, 02:25 PM
Yes yes yes, Megalomania = one of my fav. Sabbath songs.

I have a live version of it aswell, its fantastic.

I think the meaning behind Megalomania is linked to drugs, I'm not sure which one but I think its about tripping on acid.

I also have a live version of Sabbra Cadabra, that clocks in at just over 16minutes.

shadow_stalker
12-01-2004, 02:30 PM
bloody hell thats a long song, where did you get it from

one of my friends has a version of paranoid that has the maiden guitarists, zakk wydle steve haris, ozzys bassist of the time (no idea who it was), nicko (i think it was him) and ozzy's drummer all playing paranoid with Bruce and ozzy singing

its cool but at the same time the different styles each band has kind of clashes and makes it weired

Brew
12-01-2004, 02:36 PM
Cool, I might try and find it.

Sabbra Cadabra clocks in at just over 16mins because they break off into a lonng jam in the middle, followed by a small drum solo which is pretty groovey. Also at one point Ozzy shouts ''c'mon, lets all get stoned!'', which made me laugh.

shadow_stalker

its really bad compared to the origional, lars leaves out almost all of the fills and when he does do them he makes most of them more simple, im not sure if kirk does the solo bit near the start of the song

What do you people think of the album Born Again with Ian Gillan of Deep Purple? I personally think it's pretty good except for the last two song. Most killer for me are the songs Disturbing the Priest, Born Again and Zero the Hero...

Also i think metallica's sabbra cadabra sounded really like ****... Have you heard the jam during Wicked World from the Past Lives album?

shadow_stalker
12-02-2004, 04:14 AM

Everytime I've seen Past Lives in a shop I've had no money.

I've not heard all of Born Again, but from what I have heard (Trashed, Zero the Hero, Born Again) it seems to sound like a pretty good album. I'll get it eventually.

And seeing as I'm bored, heres my list of Sabbath vinyls:

Black Sabbath
Master of Reality
Vol.4
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Sabotage
Greatest Hits
We Sold Our Soul For Rock n Roll
Technical Ecstasy
Never Say Die!
Heaven and Hell
Mob Rules
Live Evil

:)

They released a few copies of Whole Lotta Love, then pulled it off the shelves. It got re-released a few years later but again got pulled off the shelves.

I think my Dad's copy may be worth around £200, possibly more.

I have no vinyl that I personally own.

Well, one now actually, after my next door neighbours lent me Killers by Iron Maiden and said I could keep it. They also leant me about 10 Motorhead vinyl's and 2 Hawkwind albums. Unfortunately, the only record player in my house is downstairs in the living room where there are usually people who aren't wanting to listen to Motorhead.

My dad has a large collection in the attic, I don't know everything that he has as its been a long time since I saw it, and back then I didn't listen to a lot of music that I like nowadays.

Not really, this is the Official Sabbath thread so Sabbath talk is a must.

Fun fact about Selling My Soul : Bill Wards drumming that he laid down was out of time and he couldn't get it right, so they used a drum machine on that song.

Both songs are good, Psycho Man being my fav. of the two. If/when the Sabs do a new album, those two songs might end up on it.

I would say all of them, except for Smoke on the Water (though it's better bys Sabbath than by Purple... :p )... Good solos? i love snowblind's, zero the hero's, heaven and hell's... Easy to play? snowblind, paranoid... i play them myself quite well (i think) and i play for only like 6 months...

Paranoid isn't exactly hard to sing, but its hard to sing as convincingly as Ozzy. I guess that sums up a lot of Ozzy's singing really.....

shadow_stalker

why do they have second parts to their names, like jack the ripper/fairies wear boots?

kredkeee!
12-04-2004, 08:11 AM
Dunno. It seems to me that those '2nd parts' are mostly instrumental as i reckon, and Sabbath didnt want them as separate songs bacause:
1. it would shorten the song (luke's wall war pigs, fairies wear boots...)
2. the instrumental song itself wouldnt be good by itself
3. those instrumentals just follow the theme of the whole song (ahhh thats why i'm in love vith War Pigs... :) )

any one else think that iommi screwed sabbath up

at times i do, but then at other times i think "well if ozzy hadnt got fired then we wouldnt have got all of his brilliant solo albums"

i know there are probably other examples of sabbath being screwed up by iommi but still everything has kind of worked out for the best

No. Isnt it the version called 'Walpurgis'? :) I like its lyrics since ive read them from black-sabbath.com...
Iommi didnt screw Sabbath up. I think he just wanted to try something new, and many of it came out as brillian albums. Though i like the oldest era of Sabbath the most, 'cos it was a lot darker and... menacing? yes that's the good word for it... :naughty:

Dazed And Confused was actually a Yardbirds song called I'm Confused, Jimmy just kept the song and changed it around a bit when he formed Zeppelin.

And, while they are similar, Paranoid and Dazed and Confused are two distinctly different songs.

Poland. TYR is great I think... Anno Mundi is... well... very listenable, so are the next two songs, then come The Sabbath Stones (i love it nearly as much as i love Children of the Grave), then the TYR trio... it's nice, but a bit more too power metal for me, then... ugh... and at last Heaven in Black. I love the drum solo at the beginning, i love the riff, and i love the lyrics. Its great as a whole song. And summa sumarum TYR is beautiful, putting together all that.

Its a great album, rock solid throughout and is good to listen to. From the start of Black Sabbath when the bells are ringing to the end of The Warning after an amazing guitar solo from Mr. Iommi, you want to know how the managed to create such a masterpiece. (note: The Warning is a cover, orginally done/written by Ainsely Dunbar(I think thats his name))

Lyrically, its not their best - sure the lyrics of Black Sabbath, N.I.B and Evil Woman may stick in your mind, but they've had better songs lyric wise.

With Blues music still being very popular in the early 70's, there's a big bluesy feel to this album. Iommi is at heart, a blues guitar player, but at the same time he's a riff-churning machine of doom and evilness. Pure genius.

This may not be my fav. Sabbath album, but as a first release this album rocks.

I'd write more, but my Geog evaluation needs to be done.

The self titled Sabbath album is great.

For anyone here who's only heard the usual Iron Man/Paranoid/War Pigs deal, get the songs A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning ... if you want to hear some good lead guitar.

Or even better, buy the album because it's really good. You wont be disappointed

I love it. As said before, lots of bluesy feel in it, but it's still great. I love all the guitar solos in all songs, they perfectly fit the mood. And i detest the fact that The Wizard is the only song where Ozzy plays the... thing i forgot the word for it :). Wizard sounds soooo cheerful with it... Behind the Wall of Sleep is nice, i've always liked it.NIB is a great riff. And solo. And the bass solo in the beginning is a masterpiece. Wicked World... i love that one. The song is really wicked. The others are also quite good but... not my faourites.

americans dont really post in it which is one reason that it is not all that popular

paranoid:

war pigs - brilliant song, with a very epic feel from tony's guitar, thundersous bass lines from geezer, drums that could make you **** yourself just from the power behind them, belowing vocals from ozzy give a perfect feel to the song

paranoid - repetative but great, very nice solo from tony, with drums and bass complimenting the lead guitar every step of the way, vocals coincide pefectly with the lyrics

planet caravan - very relaxing/calming song, showing that there is another side to sabbath (much like changes and solitude), percussion sounds help to give calming mood

iron man - that guitar, that bass those drums every single bit of this song was made master piece in itself, from the opening bass drum from bill to he closing riff of iommi, what more can you say?

electric funeral - one of the darker songs on the album, slow paced and a very dooming sound make this a almost perfect song for killing someone to

hand of doom - the song itself is a warning to the dangers of certain drugs (i forget which ones) it has a very eiree calm to it that leads into a very domminating (not sure if that is the right word) chous and later solo

Rat Salad - not a very appealing song to me, but has a very good drum solo from bill

Fairies wear boot - one of the most catchy songs that i have ever heard the guitar riff burrows its into your head and can get stck there for hours, quite a bouncy bass line if you ask me (but i doubt you will), rolling drums with a ver tasteful use of the cy,bal bells during the final riff (also known as jack the stripper)

all in all an almost flawless album that will please almost any fan (with the exception of andy  )

My statement about it was a few pages ago...
Master of Reality... Yes. In my opinion all BS albums are great, and i couldn't say any from these i've heard is better than others. But MoR seems to me the first BS album on which they play only Heavy Metal. Black Sabbath and paranoid were more bluesy. Children of the Grave, After Forever, Lord of This World... Simple yet changing and very listenable riffs, hard, 'biting' solos and sooo great vocals of Ozzy... together with Geezer's bass and Bill's drums it gives one of the hardest Metal albums I've heard...
and here it goes another time. SOMEONE MORE REPLY TO THIS THREAD PLEASE...

Master of Reality.

Rock. Solid. Album.

From the start of Sweet Leaf with Tony's coughing to the end of Into the Void, this album stays on top form and doesn't slip at all.

Solitude has become one of my fav. Sabbath songs of all time, Ozzys voice is perfect on it and its incredibly relaxing, despite the lyrics being a bit emotional. Also, the use of a tambourine in the background is mildy amusing.

master of reality is awsome, its my favorite sabbath album right now, it has no ****ty songs, it was really a change of style for them, in this album they left the doom metal slow style and started playing faster, it was a good change. Master of reality is an essential sabbath album, and an eseential heavy metal album.

what does everyone think of vol 4?
I looove it. Except for FX, for known reasons. Wheels of Confusion also wouldn't be so good without the second part, The Straightener. Tomorrow's Dream? Yeah, another 'good song by Sabbath' - no comments on it. Changes - 2 years ago one of my favourites, now my opinion is: cool BS ballad. I hate the version with Kelly O. Supernaut is a good song, I always liked it. Very dynamic riff and nice lyrics. Snowblind - one of my all-time favourites, i love the riff, i love the mood, i love the solo, i love the lyrics and its the first song ive learned to play on my geeetar:). Cornucopia. Together with 10th song, Under the Sun, the darkest songs on the album. And i love them both. Laguna Sunrise - very good to listen to after lots of death/black metal:). Nice guitars. St Vitus' Dance - the most cheerful of these all, when i read the lyrics for the first time, i fell in love with them.
That's all about it. One of my favourite albums by Sabbath.

Brew

Vol.4 = my fav. Sabbath album.

Everything about it is amazing, the riffs,melodies,lyrics...everything. If anything, this album is the true Sabbath fans album, reasonably underated and only known for the songs Snowblind and Changes, it gets looked over. It might be because its the album between Mor and Sbs, and both of those albums are easily some of Sabbaths best work.

Fav. song off the album would probably be Under the Sun, with Supernaut close behind. Both songs are incredibly catchy and the lyrics are great, especially the first verse of Supernaut.

Laguna Sunrise is the first of Tony's real instrumentals, seeing as The Warning was a cover and Rat Salad was more of a drum solo. If I'm right there's a short instrumental on Mor, but Laguna Sunrise is more noticeable. A very relaxing piece of guitar work by Mr.Iommi, showing his softer side of guitar playing, this skill was demonstrated again in the form of Fluff on SBS.

I don't really know why people don't like FX, sure its not the most interesting song/instrumental in the world, at a guess I'd say he was probably high on Cocaine when it was recorded, and the sounds were probably alot more interesting to him.

I remember when my Dad gave me this album on vinyl, he said that Snowblind was the best track on there and at the time I believed him and didn't really listen to the entire album much. When I recorded it to cd I gave it another listen and have liked it loads ever since, this album is truely amazing. An essential album for any Black Sabbath fan.

Ok let's not pick on the poor FX anymore 'cos it might start crying. Next Topic: the fifth album by Black Sabbath, the almighty Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - why does it deserve to be called one of the best Sab albums? And of course if anyone wants, give his opinions on vol.4...

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
The self-titled song with its meaty, crunchy bass and guitar riff is really great, from the beginning to the end. Lyrics very well fit in, and the acoustic chorus is a truly good piece of art. And that darker riff, the one with 'where can you run to?' lyrics... It is a sabbath's sound to me, paired by Ozzy's screech:). A National Acrobat: The riff is a bit similar to the previous song, but nevertheless great. I love the lyrics. If I didn't read somewhere they are about semen, I would be still thinking they were JUST about love :naughty: . Fluff - oh, no, it's the one i detest, it gets so... repeatable and boring... Doesn't match the album.
Sabbra Cadabra - nice riff, nice lyrics, nice drums, nice sound. Butchered by Metallica. Fairly listenable by Sabbath
Killing yourself to live - nice, I like the changing of riffs. The solo is a masterpiece. And lyrics - as usual - brilliant (Geezer is half-god...). Who are you? - Nice, not very bad now I've listened to the song more carefully, but it still is... not exactly what I want to hear from Sabbath. But the Lyrics/vocals combination in picking on God and comparing him to Big Brother... Just great. Looking for Today - 'another good song by Sabbath'. Nothing more, nothing less. Forward we go... To one of my favourite Sabbath songs: Spiral Architect. The acoustic intro is very good. The riff - i just like it. I don't know why I like this one exactly... Its the sound of all those instruments (and throat) that makes it great. Ah, forgot to mention the lyrics. I love them, for some reason.
I know i am repeatable, but I'm writing it all ad hoc and can't think of better words for it. Overally: the album deserver to be one of the best Sabbath albums in history, for its musical content is something Sabbath never did before, and never really did again. Just great.

ok lets talk about ozzy less sabbath, what does every one think of headless cross?

its one of my personal favorites, marting does an incredible job singing, martin is such an underrated singer, mostly because he was in Sabbath when they where declining and not famous at all, he is compared to Dio a lot, hes better imo, better voice, more powerful. The guitar in this album is incredible, iommi really plays 80s style solos really well in this album. This song has a bit of everything, from The power ballad "when death calls" to upbeat songs like " kill in the spirit world" to straight up metal tunes like the title track, "devil and daughter" and "black moon" of course there are more tracks, and they are all great, but those are the best imo.

Black Sabbath is in my opinion the greatest band ever. Their greatest songs are probably Iron Man, Behind the Wall of Sleep, Children of the Grave, and NIB. Ozzy by himself is also great. His best solo songs are Over the Mountain, Mr. Crowley, Shot in the Dark, and Flying High Again. (Crazy Train's good, but way overplayed, and everyone else is probably gonna put Bark at the Moon)

kredkeee!

Non-Ozzy? Alright. If we've already come to Tony Martin then let's say a bit about the third album with him, TYR. Its a really greeeat piece of music. A bit powermetal, mostly with songs like Valhalla and Jerusalem and well... Martin's vocals seem like that to me. Yet I think his voice is really powerful and sounds very well with Sabbath. Anno Mundi - one of my favourites. I love the lyrics, they seem so old-style sabbath to me (i'm daft i know). Guitars also great. And Bass. The Law Maker - nice, fast, cool solo, great drumming. Jerusalem... Very nice melody to hear. Again nice lyrics, style of vocals fits the mood perfectly. Just very good. Then come The Sabbath Stones. I love it. With that bass slide with drums in the beginning, slow, gloomy and doomy riff during the most of the song it's just very good to listen to. And that faster riff which begins lik4:30 or something, sounds to me very much like Children of the Grave (just opinion), which is lovely. Then TYR trilogy... it's good, but nothing really special about it. Feels good to me... I'm changing the previous statement. I like it. It's 'another good song by Sabbath',and it's a ballad. I've listened to the album and this song in particular 5 times during the past few days, and I must admit I like it. And...
Heaven in Black. One. Of. My. Favourite. Songs. By. Sabbath. Very cool drum solo in the beginnig, and the riff, and most importantly, the LYRICS. So true, so sad, so well-written and sung. Just one big masterpiece.
The album is different from the first albums, but still very good. There is that drums opening 4 songs. And I like it. Cozy Powell is one of the best drummers of all time, as I heard somewhere, and it's good to hear him with Sabbath. Neil Murray does also good work with his bass. Both of Tonys did their job on the highest leve they could, as usual. With Martin as songwriter making very good lyrics and Iommi with his guitars they made the album real art, and with it they have shown that Sabbath wascapable of making good music even back in the90's. I wish Sabbath reunited. If not with Ozzy, Tony Martin would be the best option.
