Look into getting 'headless cross', it has tony martin on vocals and is a brilliant album (but is quite heavy on the whole satanic stereotype of rock/metal music)

I was considering getting Cross Purposes a while ago while I was in the city because you never find stuff like that in music shops where I live, its hard enough getting the Ozzy ones, but I chose Queensryche's Warning instead. I kinda regret that.

Cozy Powell, but he hates Dio and quit.

Personally I think Dio is great, and if I can find the money I'll be buying his new DVD.

Meh, I've had this discussion too many times to want to have it again.

rippa32
06-02-2006, 05:47 AM
I don't think its because we have had it too many times, its because it hasnt been that long since the last time it was seriously discussed. But still atm its probably best to ignore the ignorant.
But anyway what would Cozy have against Dio I wonder, they had worked together before in Rainbow.

Wait, did you jus say you hate Dio and then use the hand thingo he brought to the masses? Please explain.

Dio pwns, i actually prefer Dio-era Sabbath to Ozzy-era Sabbath, he's such an awesome singer.

in non-Sabbath news, i saw Ozzy last week on the Prince's Trust anniversary tv thing, and he actually managed to sing decently, unlike at the Hall of Fame induction.

cool, who was palying?

Brew
06-04-2006, 11:51 AM
Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Journey, Thunder, Queensryche, Ted Nugent and Roadstar.

DP were kinda meh, I didn't really get into their set that well due to being tired from an amazing Alice Cooper set to which I was able to sing along to every song. Journey were good seeing as I'd never heard them before, Thunder were excellent, Queensryche were a good for a piss break, Ted Nugent was kinda crap yet kinda funny at the same time and Roadstar were alright for a young band.

I have the Alice setlist in a dodgy order on my laptop, I'll post it if anyones interested.

That seems like the kind of show where the crowd would be just as entertaining as the music.

Brew

The crowd sucked, there were no traditional Monsters bottle fights and everyone stood still pretty much, it was really hot though..probably too hot for mosh pits.

Australia gets the same, its because of the population being too small. In fact the only reason Deep Purple came was because of a petetion. I was going to but no-one wanted to come too and I wasn't going to pay $150 to see Deep Purple without Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord.

shadow_stalker

Brew
06-05-2006, 03:28 PM
You guys have got to see Alice live before he retires/dies, his current setlist is full of classics from his 70's albums, the rough order of the one from MOR is:

Department of Youth
No More Mister Nice Guy
Dirty Diamonds
Billion Dollar Babies
Lost In America
I'm Eighteen
You Drive Me Nervous
Feed My Frankenstein
Go To Hell
Is It My Body
I Never Cry
Welcome to my Nightmare
The Black Widow (instrumental)
The Awakening/Steven/Only Women Bleed
Killer/Ballad of Dwight Fry
Be My Lover
I Love the Dead (instrumental)
School's Out

Poison
Under My Wheels

Its in order upto Billion Dollar Babies, after that its not in order.

Favourite Album:
Master of Reality- Last 3 songs are phenomenally awesome. Not to discredit the first 5 though, the whole bloody thing's great. Lord of This World and Into The Void alone, however, make me want to start up my own cover band just to play the stuff live everytime I listen to them.

Honourable mentions: Vol.4, Black Sabbath, Paranoid (over-played/overrated self-titled song, but War Pigs is too epic to deny no matter how popular it is, and Planet Caravan, Electric Funeral, and Fairies Wear Boots are all key Sabbath songs)

Only own the Ozzy years (all the studio albums at least), post-Ozzy has never caught my fancy the times I've given it a chance. Love it all but I find they start to get weak on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (starts off well, trails off after Sabbra) and decline from there. Still some great songs on the last couple albums none-the-less.

rippa32
06-18-2006, 04:40 AM
What about Sabotage? The first side has some really awesome heavy tracks and the proggier stuff on side two is nothing short of brilliant (except Am I Going Insane, which is one reason you shouldnt let Ozzy write the majority of a song.)
Also check out Born Again, it has more in common with Ozzy eras than Dio stuff so you might like that.

Hey nice. Is reunion any good? I already have Past Lives and i'm not in any rush for another live album.
i think reunion is a very good live album, not up to the standards of past lives but still very good. despite what alot of people think i still say ozzy sounds good on it, maybe not as good as he was in the past but compare it to last years ozzfest performances by sabbath and it blows them away

And Ozzy never shuts up also, during non-vocal parts.
would you prefer if he just sang the words then just stood still while the insturmental parts are on? one of the reasons i like listening to sabbath live is because they get the crowd going and talk to them (well ozzy does Iommi just stands there like a log and moves about 2 foot during the whole set), its alot better than when bands go up play their msuic then bugger off at the end of the night

Early Black Sabbath albums had mass quantities of awesomeness that stemmed from alot of the bluesy elements that Iommi had in his guitar playing. And yes, Sabotage was much better than Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (except the track SBS itself, because it owned hard).

Ronnie James Dio - The Elf Albums (can normally be found in the Dio section at Virgin Megastore)
Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow, Rising, Long Live Rock n Roll
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell, Live Evil
Dio - Holy Diver, Dream Evil (I don't know a huge amount of his solo stuff, but those 2 albums are great)

Well my Black Sabbath s/t LP came in the mail today. I havnt been able to listen to it yet though because I still have to wait for a needle to come for my turntable since I broke the old one. What I'm so excited about is it's an original pressing, there are no dates on it but I can tell because the background on the inside of the gatefold is black with white writing and not vice versa. I would have pictures but the only digital camera I have is my phone and I have no way of getting those pics onto my computer.

Bastard!

How much did it cost you?

Actually...whats the track listing for it? If its got both Evil Woman and Wicked World on it then its not a 1st, if it has Wicked World on it then its a 1st American, if its got Evil Woman then its a 1st England/Rest of World edition.

It might not die this time. So has anyone heard the rumours there will be another studio album with Ozzy after the Ozzfest next year? Im not too optimistic after hearing the studio tracks on Reunion. But alot of people are going to like it just because it has Ozzy one it. Which is stupid because it will probably sound nothing like the original Ozzy era stuff which is why people didn't like post-ozzy.

Apocalyptic Raids
12-03-2006, 08:39 PM
I think I remember hearing something about it, but I don't know whether it would be any good. I'd rather hear a new album with Dio, since he is probably in better shape.

rippa32
12-03-2006, 08:44 PM
Well that's true but I think he is pretty happy with his solo career for the moment. It just annoys me that people prefer Ozzy just because it's Ozzy and won't even give the other stuff a chance. Also Ive always thought it would be nice if Ozzy sang some Dio, Gillan or Martin songs live. They had to sing his.

pate
12-03-2006, 08:48 PM
He wouldn't be able to sing any songs from the other eras. And I would die hearing him butcher "Children of the Sea" or something.

rippa32

Oh yer didn't think of that. There's also the fact that he himself honestly thinks the only real Black Sabbath was with him in it.

Brew
12-04-2006, 04:44 PM
Ozzy can barely sing his own songs let alone the Dio/Gillan/Martin ones!

Rumour has it that every Black Sabbath album will be remastered and re-released over the next few years with added bonus tracks etc...apparently there are alot of odd demos and non-used songs floating around from the Tony Martin era, hearing those would be great.

Also, making a new Sabbath thread would be retarded.

rippa32

I, too, think the only real Black Sabbath was with Ozzy in it. Sure, maybe Dio and Gillan were better technical vocalists, but they weren't right for Sabbath IMO.

rippa32

No, I just don't find the others interesting because they didn't posess that edge that Ozzy brought, and I think that was what set Sabbath apart. After Ozzy left, to me, they just became an ordinary rock band.

To pick a favourite (or two..maybe three) from each era for me...

Ozzy years - Volume.4, Sabotage, Never Say Die!
Dio years - Heaven and Hell, Live Evil (best live Sabbath album IMO)
Martin years - TYR

I agree, all Tony Martin one's are. However I just don't understand the reasoning behind Feels Good To Me, it's good but doesn't fit with the Norse mythology theme.

Brew
12-09-2006, 04:48 PM
The record label forced the band to have a radio friendly song to release as a single from TYR, hence why Feels Good To Me got tacked on the end.

I nearly bought Seventh Star today, found it for £5. The choice of a new Sabbath album to add to my collection or lunch next week..lunch won :-\

rippa32

Seventh Star
Cross Purposes

The thing is though, due to every other Sabbath album I own (except for Paranoid, TYR and Dehumanizer) coming from vinyl, I'd quite like to someday have them all on cd in fancy remastered form.

rippa32
12-13-2006, 05:07 PM
He's actually a bit of an idol of mine  . He wasn't what got me into guitar (that was seeing friends play and thought it looked fun) but I get alot of influence from him in my playing. Also the more obscure stuff he did with Sabbath like the jazzy or bluesy stuff opened my mind to different styles of music.

pate
12-13-2006, 07:51 PM
Everything about him is charming though.

When I saw them at Ozzfest 2005, during Dirty Women Ozzy's voice died and he ran off, so without missing a beat the band went straight to the solo section, and stayed with it for seriously like 10 minutes. It was amazing. Then Ozzy came back, and they did Paranoid and left. Shame it was only a 45 minute set, but they were amazing.

rippa32
12-13-2006, 08:19 PM

Opener: NIB
Rest, out of order:
War Pigs

Iron Man

Paranoid
