It is a very good song, I love that whole album. It really shows the diversity that this great band has. Its also there most metal sounding album.

Dehumanizer is a good album, but came at the wrong time.

it pretty much killed off everything that the band had achieved with the iommi/martin/powell/murray lineup

this has got nothing to do with the conversation... ive looked this up everywhere but i cant find it- figured one of you guys would know.

I have their greatest hits, and I really like War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man, Planet Caravan, NIB, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

I've only recently started getting into Sabbath Bloody Sabbath after dismissing it for ages cause it wasn't like Paranoid at all. Damn you can certainly feel the origin of metal in the title song of Sabbath in particular.

Theres something about Iommi's tone that can sound utterly evil to me. A National Acrobat is my favourite song off Sabbath, its really foreboding somehow. Electric Funeral is perhaps the most depressing song i have ever heard, there is such doom in that main riff. I'm yet to discover any of their other stuff, looking forward to it. Any recommendations for a Sabbath n00b who only knows Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath?

I wouldnt trust the information coming from Media Player. I just checked my CD and it says all songs were written by everybody in the band at that time except Battle Of Tyr, because that has no lyrics and all Tony Martin did was lyrics. I have seen other silly mistakes in Medai Player before as well.

for the sake of keeping this alive, what were u doing when you heard your first sabbath song?

i was 12 and i was at a baseball game and they played paranoid. my mom was making fun of ozzys voice but i was in love. i didnt know what the band name or song title was so i wrote 'finished with my woman' on the back of my hand, it was the only lyric i could understand/remember.

I first heard Paranoid too which is really funny that, that song got me into them because I hate it now. I always wanted to listen to Black Sabbath because I loved the name so much and when I heard a friend had the Best Of I asked to listen to it and he put that song on.

Hmm...

My discovery of Sabbath dates back to 2002 when I saw Ozzy at the Ozzfest, by then I think I already knew Paranoid but that was about it. Paranoid then ended up being the first song I learnt to play on bass, then not long after my Dad basicly gave me every Sabbath album he had on vinyl (from Black Sabbath to Never Say Die!, but not Paranoid, he had that on cassette) to listen to and keep in my room.

I first got into Sabbeth pretty heavily when in 9th grade we had to do a presentaion on a protest song. I wanted to do CCR's "Fortunate Son" but my partner convinced me into doing Sabbeth's "War Pigs" After hearing that one i perchased We Sold Our Souls for Rock & Roll.

Yeah I have, I picked up a really nice Sabbath box set a while ago, basically a greatest hits from when Sabbath started till 1988, but I have 2 say, that Sabbath wasn't really ever the same without Ozzy. The singer makes the band, i find. You know, most bands are most easily identified by the singer's voice, and unless you are really into Sabbath, it can be hard to tell it is Sabbath without Ozzy. Well, at least thats how I saw it before i actually started listening to it.

Personally I prefer them with Dio, but they had more increadible albums with Ozzy. Dio's vocals fit the band perfectly, Heaven and Hell might be my favorite Sabbath album.

I'm also really getting into their s/t. I love the bluesy feel to it, and the instrumental work is some of their best.

I agree, other Sabbath singers were good, but Ozzy had a different element to him, aside from his voice. I find the band overall sounds better with Ozzy, as if the band chemistry was better with him in it than not. I don't know, but there was something else he added that nobody else did. Heaven & Hell is a great album, my favorite without Ozzy. Other than that, I love Master of Reality, its got a very nice deep dark feel to it. Great to zone out to.

Don't, whatever you do. Ozzy might have been able to pull something like it off twenty years ago, but his voice is dead. The only bright side is Cantrell's guitar work, other than that, the tracks I've heard are awful. I'm sorry Ozzy, but your cover of Working Class Hero was torture.

Not many people may agree with me but I really like War Pigs off of Just Say Ozzy. I think Zakk really does a good job (whitch is supprising to me since I don't really like Zakk's guitar work for the most part) and Geezer is on bass, and I always thought Geezer was awsome.

That EP is quite good in general.

Wasn't Just Say Ozzy that live album full of Sabbath songs? If it is Zakk Wylde didn't play on it. In fact Jake E Lee was still to come before Zakk.

Just Say Ozzy was released in 1991-ish on the No More Tears tour.

Speak/Talk of the Devil is the shockingly crap Ozzy live album thats full of Sabbath covers, which had a guitarist who I can't remember the name of playing on it, but it deff. wasn't Jake E Lee or Zakk (or Randy, seeing as he had died)

Quite simple really just recommend some good Sabbath songs to play on guitar/bass/drums/sing, and then Im sure discussion will follow. Ill start. Symptom Of The Universe, its a fairly easy songs besides the lead bits and the solo but a hell of alot of fun to play.

On drums good songs to play are Paranoid (i know its overdone and all but it is good for beginners to learn to help with timing and so on)

NIB is quite good to play aswell, it has some fun beats and fills in it

i keep meaning to learn symtpon of the universe on the drums but i have never had time to do it

might aswell whore this site while we are talking about tablature http://www.rdrop.com/~mjames/sabbath/index.html

Any Sabbath song is good to play on bass, especially the earlier stuff because there's more room for improvisation.

^ I find that with guitar as well, I love doing improv over the wizard, even iommi does a fair bit of that at the start. Also Ive got a feeling drums are improv on Symptom Of The Universe, cos all my versions (one studio and two live) are different, my favourite being the studio version.

Yes, Volume 4 is the obvious direction you should be heading in. Plus, it's got Supernaut, which is what I wanted to talk about anyway.

I love all the Ozzy years, even the much frowned upon "Technical Ecstasy" and "Never Say Die"
These albums showed a diversity to the band that sadly only lasted until "Heaven And Hell" which is also a great album!

rippa32

I dont think so. Martin doesnt have the power that Dio has. Also Dio is surprisingly versatile, check out Rainbow Eyes by Rainbow for an example of this. Also to anyone who think they sucked without ozzy, your fine to think that but why? The other singers are really good and they arnt the first band to have line-up changes with their singers. I dont see anyone say Deep Purple sucked without Gillan.

In other news I have finally recieved the record in the mail. I have only been able to hear the first two songs so far as my pre-amp isnt working. Unfortunately I found out it was re-issue after looking at the inner sleeve, normally this wouldnt be too bad but I think it was re-issued mid 80's so there has been digital technology used at some point and it sounds like a CD thus kinda defeating the point.

I agree, but I think more people grew up listening to Sabbath with Ozzy, and so thats what they know as Sabbath. When you suddenly start listening to the same band, with a different singer, it can really throw people. Especially if this changes the general sound of the band. Thats what happened with me, I only knew Ozzy-era, and when I listened to post-Ozzy, I didn't really like it. Took a little while to get used to a new sound, and try to take the Ozzy sound out of my head.

You're right. He was hired after sending in an impressive audio tape to fulfill tour commitments....but he wasn't comfortable in the studio and left. That was from April '84 till late'84 before Ozzy came back to sing with them for Live Aid in July '85 and Glenn Hughes joined in June '85

I think Sabbath with Ozzy is better than post-Ozzy, but the rest is still good quality Sabbath music and I still enjoy listening to it as much as with Ozzy.

So The Masked Guitarist, I'm assuming you won't have any of Ozzy's solo albums? Because if you listen closely, it doesn't sound anything like Sabbath... Just something to think about........

'tis not very fair to praise sabbath for changing their sound when they got a new singer, and then criticise ozzy for changing sound when he got a different guitarist

That's not the point I was trying to get across, I simply meant Ozzy never adds anything to the music, hes just the frontman because a band needs one even in his solo career. I never criticised the change in music direction.

Well, to be honest, Ozzy's solo career was fairly mediocore, at least compared to his work in Black Sabbath.

Regarding Ozzy's solo work, I really like it. It's different to most anything else that I've heard. He wasn't so egotistical to try to make his new band sound like Sabbath.

Fair enough really for Sabbath changing the sound of the music when they got rid of Ozzy. I don't think people would have appreciated a new singer nearly as easily if it had been the original sound with a new singer. I know my attitude would be "it's just someone trying to sound like Ozzy", and I wouldn't be as inclined to buy the albums. Really, it was Sabbath being new, different, and showing another side to each member.

It wasn't that the band was rejecting their sound they had with Ozzy, as it showed whenever Ozzy came back for reunion shows. They still played Ozzy-era songs with the Ozzy-era sound.

Hope this kinda makes sense....

Ive seen Ozzy say quite a few times he didnt really like the music Sabbath made. But now hes back with them he just bags the post-ozzy stuff. If he didn't like it, why did he come back? Sometimes hes almost as bad as Sharon.

I love Ozzy's solo stuff, it was a nice change of direction from black sabbath rather than just makeing a black sabbath clone

No one will ever be as bad as Sharon, i will never forgive her for what she did to Iron Maiden

Long story, just search Iron Maiden OZZFest in google and you should get a fair few articles. Kelly and some other unsigned bands were involved as well.

Love the Sabbath.

Sabbath was actually the music which slapped me up side the head and made me relize rap was awful during my highschool days. Changing my ways and making me a rocker, instead of a wigger.

Here is the songs our band plays all the time....
NIB
War Pigs
Paranoid
Hand of Doom
Iron Man
Electric Funeral
Symptom of the Universe
Snowblind

All of us pretty much know these tunes by heart, now.

Why not? Bill made it up too. I suppose the best way to do it would be to do the same general thing hes doing but in your own way, if that makes sense. It probably doesn't because Im not a drummer.

Yeah thats what i do with every song i learn, i learn the general beat and make my own stuff up.

its just that i have heard a version of sympton where bill seems to do a 1 handed snare roll, while hitting 780000 other drums and cymbals at once:p

Vol. 4 was sort of their descent after their first three flawless albums, still a really good album, but it lacks a bit of the darkness from the earlier albums.

Still one of the top Ozzy records, although its also one of the more produced ones which does not lend itself to the feel of Sabbath. Its fair to say that the less Sabbath messed about in the studio the better the music came out.

Vol.4 is probably the best Ozzy-era Sabbath album.

possibly. i love all ozzy sabbath albums, but yea, Vol. 4 is a specially great one. favourites off it: Snowblind, Under The Sun. it is THE album to listen to while watching the sunset. Under the Sun owns. the last riff is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. with that solo, it does it all for me.

How is Electric Light Orchestra connected to Black Sabbath? Who went to which band, what year and what instrument?

Bev Bevan the drummer from ELO replaced Bill Ward for the Born Again tour (1983), although Bill played on the album. There was even talk of Sabbath covering ELO's Evil Woman on stage but they never did and have even disupted any discussion of it. I hope that answers your question :thumb:

Okay my turn.

What band did Tony Iommi play with for two weeks in 1969? And why was he fired?

Jethro Tull, and he wasn't fired from either band - he quit Sabbath, went to Jethro Tull, then 2 weeks later quit 'Tull and came back to Sabbath saying ''so I played with Jethro Tull for 2 weeks...so what?''

He wasn't fired? Then was it a mutual decision between him and Ian Anderson? Because I remember one of the reasons he left was because they didn't want someone that does drugs in their band.

Thats not what I heard. All the sources I've heard said that he thought Anderson was "too weird" for him and he didn't like that Anderson didn't have much of a connection with the band and did things like sat at another table when they were eating lunch and stuff like that. Though if I'm not mistaken he can be heard or seen playing with the band on the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.

And he also apparently wrote one of the songs on Stand Up but it has Martin Barre playing and he didnt even get credited but as far as I know thats just speculation.
