dio with sabbath or just dio?
It was just Dio.
if it helps at the start it had a demonic sort of voice talking about crossing a rainbow bridge, the video was a live style one with a dragons head and crap like that on the stage

 My Permanent Waves LP does that right in the end of Jacob's Ladder...at the part where the one chord keeps repeating anyway so it took me forever to realize the record was even broken.

Not many of mine do that, which is nice. The only one that comes to mind is American Psycho by The Misfits, the last track (Hell Night) has a repeating/skipping section somewhere in the middle.
I have one album on vinyl thats really bad, it can skip from the middle of a verse to the chorus in some songs :-\

A couple of my dad's Beatles albums do that, he lent em to someone who didn't take care of them. I fixed by adjusting the weight on the tone arm but that can wear both the record and stylus alot faster.
Oh shadow stalker I think ive seen bits of the video but not actually heard the music from it. It could be the song Sacred Heart though.
So one of my favorite bass tones ever is Geezer's on the whole SBS album. Anyone know what his gear was for that album?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think he was using Laney amps on the SBS album. No idea what bass he was using.
His tuning on that album is C#F#BE.

I thought Master Of Reality and Vol 4 where the only albums to have C# tuning and the rest were D. But maybe you're right.
Sabbra Cadabra is played in C#, I'm pretty sure the rest of the album is aswell.
Past Lives came in the post this morning, Live at Last sounds much better than the dodgy version I downloaded ages ago, and Disc 2 sounds interesting.
Its the standard version of the album though, I didn't get a poster or plectrum :(

I don't really see anything spectacular about Dirty Women, its never really grabbed my attention.

I just hate it - the artwork on the sleeve is godawful, the music is terrible, and Gillan's voice grates on my ears and makes me tremble and start looking for sharp objects with which to harm people - viz. Mr Gillan, if he were in range.
Reasons why I don't like Ian Gillan
a) His voice is nasty (to my ears)
b) He was in the most overrated band in history (leave you to guess that one...clue; it wasn't his own band, Gillan, cos everyone knows that sucked)
c) He joined Sabbath after they'd had the unique Ozzy, and the awesome Dio. It was like sacrilege to me (don't forget I remember all this happening), and the dungpile of an album he did with them just about put the tin hat on it. The only saving grace on that entire album is the riff of Zero The Hero - not the song, just the riff.
/takes a big breath after rantage
Thats a shame, because I've actually been thinking of getting Born Again for some time now, because I love Ian Gillian so much. I have no idea how you can say that Deep Purple is the most overrated band ever, have you actually listened to anything by them Smoke on the Water?

Of course you are, I'm just surprised that a Sabbath fan would hate Deep Purple. I know very few people who once they actually listen to Deep Purple don't like them. Meh, to each his or her own.

Fair do's.
A few months ago, saying you didn't like a popular band like DP would have resulted in a flamefest of biblical proportions - it's good that we are now allowed divergent opinions without it all getting ugly!
Tell you what, I'll dig out some DP stuff, give it another listen and a fair hearing, and see if I like it more than I used to. Can't do more than that.

Gillan's voice in general grates on me - his screams are in a different league of hatefulness.
Sorry. But I promised to give them another go, and I'll keep my word over the weekend.
I have a horrible feeling though, that the "Radish Syndrome" is about to happen.
This is when, after years of not liking radishes, I suddenly think "why do I hate radishes? Other people really like them. They can't be that bad, perhaps I've remembered the flavour wrong, and I'm missing out - hmm, I'll get some..."
Then I have a salad, get the radishes out, try one, and go "blaaaaaghh!!" and spit it out, saying "I feckin' hate radishes; they're feckin awful!!"
And don't buy any for about two years, and then it happens all over again..

i was listening to the primus remake of nativity in black with ozzy the other day.i always liked this remake of the song.to the point where i think it is one of the few remakes of a song that is better than the original.les claypool is a phenomenal bass player and his bass playing is what makes the song even better.geezer isnt one of the bass players i think of when i think of great bass players.he's good but not that great.

He is actually, he's one of those players that can really play good bass lines that don't necessarily go along with the rest of the song, John Paul Jones is another that can do this. And don't call it Nativity In Black it is just plain N.I.B the nativity in black thing was just a rumour.

It actually doesn't stand for anything. Back in the day Bill had a goatee that Ozzy reckoned looked like a pen nib(while high of course) so he would always call him nibby, the title actually has nothing to do with the song. Why they printed it as an abbreviation though I don't know.

Black Science came today, it sounds pretty good so far.
Did anyone else see Ozzy and then Sabbath on the UK Hall of Fame? Ozzy's voice was bollocks, I didn't recognise his bass player, Geezer looked pissed off and bored when Ozzy was talking when the Sabs were inducted and if Ozzy's voice wasn't so bollocks they should've played all of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
Ozzy looks well, but his voice is gone.

I love the debut album. It's like a twisted dark take on the sounds of Led Zeppelin. I also think that Volume 4 is an incredibly strong album and probably should have had as much recognition as Paranoid and Master of Reality.
rippa32
11-21-2005, 04:45 AM
In my opinion Vol 4 needs more recognition than Paranoid, it can be a bit of an acquired taste though, I had to let it grow on me.
Oh btw I got the replacement stylus today so I have finally been able to listen to Technical Ecstacy. One word: Awesome. I loved it beginning to end, my favourites being Gypsy and You Won't Change Me. Bill's song isn't bad either but I reckon his one on Never Say Die would probably be better(im guessing) it's just that It's Alright is kind of boring.
Oh and brum I remember you told me that an original pressing of the debut album would cost quite a lot, yet I bought an original pressing of Led Zeppelin's Houses Of The Holy, almost perfect condition except one or two tiny hard to see scratches and only the VERY occasional record crackle and yet it is was only $15. What constitutes the high price of an original pressing Black Sabbath debut album?
Moondog
11-21-2005, 04:53 AM
Rippa I think the reason that Sabbath's debut original LP costs so much is because of the controversial inverted cross in the sleeve.
A first edition BS LP is black on the inside, with the inverted cross and poem etc...pretty much the same as my version, although the inside of mine is white.
I think it all boils down to where you buy it from though.

Hey drum solo by alcoholic Bill. You can even tell he was an alcoholic by Technical Ecstacy because the drumming is nothing compared to the earlier stuff which is brilliant and VERY underrated. Also the drumming is really good on Born Again(if you can even hear it with all that crappy mixing).
Considering the size of Bills kit back in the early 70's, his drumming was incredible.
I came to the conclusion yesterday that Symptom of the Universe from the Past Lives album is the heaviest thing the Ozzy-era of Sabbath ever performed, its brilliant.

Kronos
12-06-2005, 09:53 AM
No. I don't own any Tony Martin stuff.
Why does his name so not sound right for a metal singer?
It sounds like a cheesy crooner from the 60s
Apparently from a recent gig, he only played one song from his new album, with the rest being Sabbath songs, from all eras.
The songs I remember seeing from the review are The Law Maker, Odin's Court/The Battle of TYR/Valhalla medley, War Pigs, Children of the Sea, Paranoid, Headless Cross and The Eternal Idol.

Yeah I heard that too, it was just for the sake of touring and the tour of the album is coming later(I think). I've always thought he could do a very good job of Children Of The Sea, never actually heard him do it though.

War Pigs

It would. Apparently he had Geof Nicholls play for him as well, which is a bit sad considering Iommi basically dumped him.
The main reason why he played so many Sabbath songs and got away with it is because Geoff Nicholls had a hand in writing most of them.

Good setlist, pretty average sound quality and again, pretty average video recording.
I don't think I'm getting any Sabbath related stuff for Christmas, but after Christmas I might look into getting Cross Purposes, Cross Purposes Live (either video or dvd), 7th Star and Forbidden.

Black Sabbath are truly awesome, the original stoner rock band. I agree that after ozzy left the band just became to 80's and lost the groove and a lot of the soul that they had in the 70's. Maybe it was a good thing though as "Never Say Die" and "Technical Ecstacy" were weak compared to early material. Volume 4 started it for me and my favorite album is probably Master of Reality. Nothing beats the power, rawness and sludge of Sabbath. Huge influence on hard rock and metal bands ala soundgarden and alice in chains.
rippa32

My thoughts exactly
The Dio era was one of the best though...
Luckily Dio is perfectly happy with his solo band at the moment, which is why he won't be making a full return to Sabbath.
To be fair, seeing as Sabbath has been around as the 'classic' line-up for the past 10 years or so, I think it'd be best if Iommi decided to call it a day, and lay the Sabbath name to rest, rather than go through the process of finding a new singer, writing new songs, recording the new songs etc...it'd take them at least a year to do, when both Iommi and Geezer could be touring with their solo bands.
rippa32
12-20-2005, 08:38 PM
Im not a huge fan of their solo careers myself so I hope they stick with Sabbath personally. Maybe Iommi should get David Coverdale like he was going to for Seventh Star.

At first I didn't like Side 2 apart from Supertzar but Am I Going Insane and The Thrill Of It All is really starting to grow on me but The Writ is just all over the place, and I didnt get Blow On A Jug, damn. As for side 1, excellent, some fo Sabbath's best work. But after hearing two different live versions of Symptom Of The Universe I was quite surprised by that acoustic bit at the end. I don't like it actually. It's kinda growing on me but ill always prefer the live version. And to Ladyshredder Ian Gillan didn't tour before Dio, he was actually Dio's replacement. They did the Born Again album after Bill Ward had come back and then Smoke On The Water was played live on that tour.

I thought so too. I find his solo to be more interesting than Blackmore's. I reckon hed ruin any other Deep Purple song though, no offence to Iommi but his writing style is very different.

This thread is dying again. Lets try that thing again where you post some lyrics from a song and then the person to guess the song, posts lyrics for another song and so on and so on. Ill start.
"She wears her leather just to satisfy
She really throws it around
There aint one thing she cant afford to buy
Shes the richest bitch in town."
That was easy.
Digital Bitch :)
I'll have some up in a mo'
Edit:
''The highway's screamin', callin' out your name
Cause every road that you travel on
There's a price to pay
A thousand eyes are starin'
But the blind still lead the blind''

Feels Good To Me:thumb:, that actually took me a little while, I knew it was TYR album but couldnt think of the song.
"Look in the water
Tell me what do you see
Reflections of the love you give to me
Life isn't money
It's not something you buy
Let me fill myself with tears you cry"
You're wrong, try again :p
And those lyrics are...ack, I know it but can't get the name.
Dio-era yes?
I'm thinking something off Heaven and Hell...
Lonely is the Word?

You have the album but not the song.
EDIT: The lyrics you posted, is it Jerusalem?

It is indeed.
I can hear Dio singing your lyrics but I can't match them to a song.

I just found out that Black Sabbath will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame this year on March 13. I think I may speak for a few people when i say, About ****ing time!
:chug: for Sabbath then.
shadow - I think its going to be similar to the Black Box, with all the Dio-era albums being included, and a possible bonus disc of out-takes, the 2 new songs and other weird stuff that people like to put on cds.

I normally use a site that is linked form amazon called CaimenUSA (or something like that) delivery can be slow but its normally loads cheaper than using amazon itself
/cries for the shrinkage that has been done onto his avatar
Have any of the UK guys in here heard Iommi's show on Planet Rock called Black Sunday?
He has the most boring voice I've ever heard, but plays some damn good music, last night he played Trashed after talking about how it was written, but I couldn't really hear what he said 'coz my Mum was talking to me :-\

The thread is slow again, so lets have some more lyric challenges.
Get the song right, post some lyrics, simple stuff :thumb:
'' Remember the face you saw
That once was you
Spirit high there's no way that
You could lose
Give him rope they said
As you look the hangman in the eye
Now around your neck you feel
The noose''
Go!

heres an easy one of my favorites. one of their few in a major key.
Brothers sharing, mother's caring
Nighttime falling victim to the dawn
Shadows mourn
Days are falling, time is calling
To the Earth another life is born
Love line drawn

You cant cheat much more than that.
dont know tose lyrics, but to bump the thread i am once again gonna say how much i hate no stranger to love, what where they thinking?
The lyrics are from Hard Road.
And No Stranger For Love is from 7th Star, so is technically an Iommi solo song.

bump! bump I say. Anyhoo heres some lyrics.
There's another side of heaven
This way - to technical paradise
Find it on the other side
When the walls fall down
Love is automatic pleasure
Virtual reality
Terminal hate - it's a calculation
Send in the child for connection
Also in other news Tony Iommi does an episode in the upcoming School Of Rock series(you know the one with Gene Simmons).
Did you google that? Cos if you did thats cheating. Either way welcome to the Black Sabbath thread.
If I told I cheated just to keep the thread alive, would you forgive me?
