I listen to mainly the Ozzy era Sabbath. I am listening to the song The Dark/Zero the Hero and it clearly is not Ozzy. I was just curious, who did the vocals for the song and what album is it on? Thanks.
Generally, music is played. Try to get your head around that and we can talk.
If that made any sense, we could talk.
If you're saying that synthesizers are somehow 'not playing music' then we can't talk because you don't even know anything about anything.

Ah good song you have found there. It is on the Born Again album which has Ian Gillan(the guy from the famous Deep Purple Mark II line-up).

Your opinion is completely backwards.
How can an opinion be backwards?
Your opinion is completely backwards.
Most of the synth effects sabbath used were incredibly fruity, as well as the fact that using a synth is just retarded in the first place.
I've stated MANY times in this thread about my dislike for the Paranoid album, I'm fed up of ranting about it over and over again, so if you get bored feel free to read the entire thread.
So my opinion is backwards because I prefer NSD! - one of their most overlooked albums to their most over-rated over-played and pretty boring album Paranoid?
Whats wrong with synths?
Have you ever composed music?
Synths allow for endless possibilities when composing music, without them the music of today wouldn't exist. They're used everywhere, even if you don't realise.
I just saw your usertitle...and to make sure I keep you happy:
In my opinion, which is normally completley different to everyone else's, I think that Slash is a crap and boring guitarist.

I'm pretty stoked as I've finally got Fairies Wear Boots down. The paranoid album is pretty overrated but still a good album IMO. My favorite BS Album is Sabotage because I like Hole in the Sky. Ozzy writes some pretty crazy lyrics.

And there's no need to preface every single sentence with 'In my opinion.' It's generally obvious when something is someone's opinion.

I could state my reasons for thinking you're wrong a thousand times and it wouldn't change the fact that it's my opinion.Whats wrong with synths?
Have you ever composed music?
Did you even read my previous post? I answered both those questions.Synths allow for endless possibilities when composing music, without them the music of today wouldn't exist. They're used everywhere, even if you don't realise.Of course they're used everywhere. But seldom are they used in any meaningful way. I have never heard (and this is aside from my bias against synthesizers) anyone use synthesizer in a way that adds to the music, except in techno. Oh wait, no. I can think of one song. Teenage Wasteland. But that was completely different to most songs where synthesiizer ws used.
In my opinion, which is normally completley different to everyone else's, I think that Slash is a crap and boring guitarist.
What was that? You've only heard 3 Guns N' Roses songs?OK, you really don't know anything about anythingNice job, pussy. Instead of arguing your point, accuse me of ignorance as a thin disguise to the fact that you have no reply.

I wrote a paragraph in response to this, bringing up Slash's Snakepit etc. but I decided to delete the whole thing when I found this post of yours, which in one go, proves why the paragrapgh would be lost on you, and why your opinion on guitarists is worthless.
In a discussion about Tony Iommi:
Best Hard Rock guitarist, actually.
I don't even know why I'm arguing with you. You constantly prove that your opinion is worthless. I don't even need to say anything. It's like you want to discredit yourself. And you call Slash boring...

Edit: I just noticed you pulled my quote out of the Iommi Fan Club thread that got closed pretty quickly last night. Don't go around calling long-standing forum members "retards" just because they don't agree with you - we all disagree about a lot of things on this forum but that sort of behaviour doesn't help.
Iommi isn't the fastest or most talented soloist ever seen, but he had an ear for a good riff, and virtually single-handedly shaped the music style of metal. For that, even if there are hundreds of guitarists nowadays that could easily out-shred him, he deserves some respect.
Or was it Slash who did that?

Has lupus done enough to illicit a ban? Also lupus id like to tell you what I tell most people. Black Sabbath was probably the biggest influence on heavy metal of all, but they are NOT actually heavy metal. Metal is based on classical influences and solos and these influences sometimes come into riffs as well, notice how hard Iron Maiden riffs are to play. Yet Rock is based on blues and to a lesser extent jazz. And that is what Sabbath is based on. Also, this is a little off topic and not directed specifically at lupus, has anyone noticed nu-metal has no classical influences? Does that mean they arnt truly metal?
Lupus
10-06-2005, 06:19 AM
Wow, you guys are unbelievably hypocritical.
And, no. Black Sabbath IS heavy metal. That is a fact. They may not seem heavy compared to music today, but around that time, they were considered heavy metal. That was the period when heavy metal was invented, and Sabbath was heavier than any other band who had delved in heavy metal. So, because heavy metal was invented and defined in that time period, you can't say Black Sabbath wasn't heavy metal, because they played a large part, possibly the largest, in defining it.
And sinc when did metal have to have classical influences?
rippa32
10-06-2005, 06:49 AM
Since ever, that is how its defined.
Lupus
10-06-2005, 07:41 AM
Yeah, sure. Find out who originally used the term heavy metal and I guarantee they weren't referring to music that was necessarily influenced by classical. The term metal was used to describe how heavy the music was (i.e. lots of distortion) What do you consider the first heavy metal song?

First heavy metal song?
Hmm.
Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild mentions the words Heavy Metal, so in a lyrical sense it would be the first heavy metal song.
But to me, the first heavy metal song would be something from one of the early Judas Priest albums.
Also, other than Steppenwolf using Heavy Metal in Born to be Wild, the term was coined by journalists and the media.
Edit: I predict that the kid will try to call my opinions worthless again, why he's even bothering to carry all this on is beyond me, he's not going to change my mind on how I see Sabbath.

Brum - I cannot see how Judas Priest can be credited with the first heavy metal songs when their first album didn't come out til 1974, and even then, Rocka Rolla is hardly a metal album at all
I would think early Sabbath would be the first true metal - although judging it by the standards of today it would be too blues/jazz influenced to qualify.
Lupus does have a valid point about the relativity of heaviness viz the time it was released.
IMO the first album to really connect classical influences with heavy metal was Blizzard Of Ozz and Rhoads' work on it, before this point (1979) there was little sign of it at all
I was thinking more along the lines of Priest's Sin After Sin (1975/76?) album, but I can see how Sabbath would be primitive heavy metal when they first appeared.
But then again, Rainbow's Rising (1976?) is primitive power metal, so in a sense they could also be credited with being the first heavy metal band, seeing as both genres are incredibly similar.
But at the end of the day, I don't really care about what type of music Black Sabbath are, I just know that every single song (bar Paranoid) is music that I enjoy listening to.
It'd be great if this whole dispute could come to an end, but you guys can carry it on if you want.

I've always maintained that Rainbow was proto-PM - imo it's where it all started!
Anyhoo, as I'm a bit of a Priest anorak, here's an early discography
Rocka Rolla 1974
Sad Wings Of Destiny 1976
Sin After Sin 1977
Stained Class and Killing Machine (Hell Bent For Leather in US) both 1978
Unleashed In The Studio, sorry, East I think was recorded in 78 but released in 1979
Then it was British Steel 1980, Point Of Entry 1981, Screaming For Vengeance 1982, Defenders Of The Faith 1984, Turbo 1986, Ram It Down 1988, and Painkiller 1990.

Excellent! I'm afraid I forgot about him in my excitement about Paradise Lost/Nightwish :upset: I think he played the UEA in Norwich on Tues.11th. It's only an hour's drive from me and I FORGOT. Blast!

Okay going to get a new Black Sabbath album soon. Eternal Idol or Mob Rules?
Hmm.
If you like Dio more, get Mob Rules.
If you like Tony Martin more, get Eternal Idol.
Both are great albums.
I'm really looking forward to seeing Dio, I'm going by myself though :(

I thought this was over, and I havn't heard that song although I fully understand Fluff is very classical. I'll admit I was wrong about the whole classical for metal and blues for rock, but in my eyes Black Sabbath is Hard Rock. Can we end this now please?

Fixed.
The reason I post on MX is for fun so I really can't see why I should be serious all the time on these boards.
Yes, I'm sad and pathetic because I like to have fun online.
I'm fed up of the same discussions being brought up in here every 3months or so due to n00bs like yourself who're either too lazy to read the thread or feel that they have to include their views on things.
This has become just like a community thread over the past 6months or so, all the regulars know each other and we joke around etc. Just because you like to take the internet seriously doesn't mean that I and the others have to aswell. You really think I got all these posts by being serious in every thread?
You need to understand that we really can't be arsed with you anymore, feel free to keep posting in here but don't expect many serious replies to your questions or statements.

Oh and one more thing, What pressing of the vinyl debut album do you have? Is it the one with the cool poem inside?
2nd edition, white background with black lettering and the inverted cross with the poem in the middle.
I'll take more pics of my vinyl soon.
I just got back in from seeing An Evening with Ronnie James Dio :D:D
I'll post a full review tomorrow, but the set list was this:
Tarot Woman (rainbow)
The Sign of the Southern Cross (black sabbath)
One Night in the City
---
Stand up and Shout
Holy Diver
Gypsy
Drum solo
Caught in the Middle
Straight Through the Heart
Invisible
Rainbow in the Dark
Shame on the Night
Guitar + Keyboard Solo
---
Gate of Babylon (rainbow)
Heaven and Hell (black sabbath)
Man on the Silver Mountain/Catch the Rainbow (rainbow)
Long Live Rock n Roll (rainbow?)
The Last in Line

I know what you mean, if only he would come to Australia. You're a lucky one brum.
For a show that had the crowd waiting 2 hours for it to begin (doors were 7pm, they came on stage at 9pm) it was amazing.
They had technical problems with the keyboards which meant the show would have been alot longer, but what we got was still awesome. I was amazed that they played Tarot Woman first, not many people around me recognised it :D
I got chatting to a guy who's 50 whilst waiting for the show to begin, he said that he first saw Dio in 1971 with Elf, and they were supporting Deep Purple. We both sang really loud during the Rainbow and Sabbath songs, especially Heaven and Hell.

Simon Wright is on drums at the moment, he's brilliant.
During the start of Heaven and Hell, everyone was singing/humming/oooohing along as the intro progressed, Dio liked it so much he got the band to play it again so we could sing/hum/ooh again.

And whats wrong with the lyrics? One of his best imo. Amd brum where did you get a price of 60 pounds from? Thats quite a lot, how much would a second edition cost then? I might have to take the cheap way out.
I was reading Record Collector magazine a few months ago and they had a Vertigo special, with prices for all the best albums to come from that label.
I think a 2nd edition would cost around £35, but odds of finding one in good condition may be slim.

the inside of we sold our souls, kind of looked like a pregnant maralin manson to me
rippa32
10-27-2005, 05:56 AM
Yes me and my friend both agreed it looked like Manson. It could be were he got the inspiration for looking like a freak.
Manson got his inspiration from a whole load of musicians from the 70's and 80's, mainly Alice Cooper.
I was thinking the other day, how cool it would be if Black Sabbath held a super-show, where each classic line-up re-forms for a short set of 8 songs each, then a huge sing along at the end for Paranoid.
By classic line-up I mean:
MkI Ozzy Years (1969 - 1978)
MkII Dio Years (1979 - 1982)
MkIII Gillan Years (1983 - 1984)
MkIV Tony Martin Years (1985 - 1990)
MkV Dio Years (Dehumanizer-era 1991 - 1992)
MkVI Tony Martin Years (1993 - 1996)
I was thinking maybe we could have a little fantasy game, where we take each line-up, pick their 8 song setlist, and post them in here.
For Example, the layout would be:
MkI Line-Up
*insert songs here*
MkII Line-Up
*insert songs here*
etc...
I'll have my setlists up in a bit, I need to think of them first.

I found some Beatles vinyl in pretty good condition not so long ago - Abbey Road, The White Album and another one I've forgotten the name of.
Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, I'll post my setlists for the Sabbath Super Show. These will probably be edited alot during the day.
MkI - Ozzy Years.
Intro tape - Supertzar
1. Hole in the Sky/Don't Start (too late)
2. Sabbra Cadabra
3. Children of the Grave/Drum Solo
4. War Pigs (for sing-along++)
5. Black Sabbath/Guitar Solo
6. Wicked World
7. Megalomania
8. Never Say Die!
MkII - Dio Years
Intro tape - E5150
1. Neon Knights
2. Die Young
3. Children of the Sea
4. The Sign of the Southern Cross/Heaven and Hell/Guitar Solo medley
5. Mob Rules/Heaven and Hell ending
6. Lonely is the Word
7. I
8. TV Crimes
*rest to come later*

Hey great list. But I would have replaced War Pigs with Symptom Of The Universe. And Sabbra Caddabra with Sweet Leaf but otherwise thats what I would probably choose.

I have Sabbath's first four albums. SBS will be my next purchase. So for a while I have been wondering which should I get as my sixth BS disc: Sabotage or Heaven & Hell?

Vol.4 is my favorite. Vol.4 is more intresting/daring, heavier, kicks more ***, and has more songs. But you can't go wrong with self-titled either, it was the second Sabbath album I got after Paranoid.:thumb: :thumb:

'Heaven & Hell.' In my opinion, it's the second best Black Sabbath CD of all of Sabbath's history.

Agreed (That it isn't their best, I prefer SBS and a few others) but why do you hate Paranoid so much? War Pigs, Planet Caravan, Iron Man and Fairies Wear Boots are top notch songs, Paranoid and Electric Funeral are good and catchy if not brilliant, and the other two aren't bad either.

This thread is dying again. Trivia again. Two questions.
What Deep Purple singer was originally intended to sing on Tony Iommi's original solo album?
Who was actually playing with Tony but not considered a member of Black Sabbath because there was no band at the time?

Sounds like an unofficial compilation someone has thrown together, but it cant be any worse than the "best of" black sabbath
I had a chance to get the best of that was made in the 70s awhile ago but i didnt realise what it was so i didnt :upset:

ok, well i bought the set, it covers Sabbath from Jun68 (lineup = Ozzy, Bill Ward, Geezer Butler, and Tony Iommi) till Jun88. in this time, Sabbath had 12 different lineups. the box set contains a "family tree" and shows how and where band members came from/went to. for example "after a day of drinking, Ian Gillian woke up to find he'd agreed to become sabbaths new singer" :p

On another note, I am looking out to buy some Black Sabbath albums on vinyl, if I find a brand new one, sealed and all that. Is it possible the sound on it would be remastered?

I just hate it - the artwork on the sleeve is godawful, the music is terrible, and Gillan's voice grates on my ears and makes me tremble and start looking for sharp objects with which to harm people - viz. Mr Gillan, if he were in range.
Reasons why I don't like Ian Gillan
a) His voice is nasty (to my ears)
b) He was in the most overrated band in history (leave you to guess that one...clue; it wasn't his own band, Gillan, cos everyone knows that sucked)
c) He joined Sabbath after they'd had the unique Ozzy, and the awesome Dio. It was like sacrilege to me (don't forget I remember all this happening), and the dungpile of an album he did with them just about put the tin hat on it. The only saving grace on that entire album is the riff of Zero The Hero - not the song, just the riff.

Well I like it, I also like the cover art, I have never understood why people hate it so much. The only thing I do not like is the mixing its so sludgy you can barely hear the guitar.
Hey I finally got a Sabbath record on vinyl today, Technical Ecstacy. I don't have a stylus in the turntable at the moment seeing as how I broke the old one. What is really pissing me off though is I looked at it in the shop and noticed only a couple of small scratches but after getting it home and really looking the quality is not great at all and I payed AUS$15 for it, yet I payed the same price for Led Zeppelin's Houses Of The Holy and its immaculate(well almost). So theres my rant, I feel much better now.
