playing sabbath on guitar is really easy i've noticed, but it's fun.
it mostly owerchords, slow riffs and soloing which is better doing an improvization
cuz if you listen very well most of iommi's solos are just improvized

they sound like they are but they are not, he works them all out before a live show rather than playing anything that goes with it, its still improvised but not on the spot improvised (if you catch what im saying)

They're alot different to Paranoid, kinda less heavy and in my opinion, alot better. Lyric-wise, they're almost on the same level as Vol.4

And if I'm right, every person whose played in Black Sabbath, is still alive.

Brew
11-08-2004, 12:41 PM
And on the topic of line-ups, there have been roughly 30 different Black Sabbath line-ups over the past 30 years.

even though most of them should have died from drug abuse, alchoholism (is that a real word) and various other things

Brew
11-08-2004, 12:53 PM
Ozzy should have died in 1980.
Bill Ward should have died in the mid-80's or after his heart attack.

They're like....invincible.

shadow_stalker
11-08-2004, 01:11 PM
that is useful to know maybe they could take over the world

has tony ever had anything like a heart attack?

Brew
11-08-2004, 02:06 PM
Nope, to my knowledge Tony is fit as a fiddle.

So..I just heard a cover of Solitude by Cathedral, and they didn't ruin it too much. The music is pretty much the same and the vocals are a bit less mellow than Ozzy's, and in some parts it sounds like they're playing his voice in the background. But overall its a good cover :thumb:

sabbath....pure blues based rock...i love it. i'm a die hard fan of everything from their self titled debut to Sabotage. It does go downhill from there imo. Anyways a couple of good songs to check out Solitude, Thrill of it all, into the void, war pigs, Behind the wall of sleep, Hand of doom, Wheels of confusion, electric funeral, and many more.

exceptional bass, drums, guitar and vocals....great stuff.

Black Sabbath from 1970-1978 that is...after that you cant really call it Black Sabbath, its just plain 80's crap.

Hmmm, I don't beileve they did just a little bit, Black Sabbath created and exposed the whole world to this music. Without Black Sabbath, there wouldn't be all these bands there are today such as Deftones, Slipknot, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeath. You get my point... I hope. Black Sabbath created Heavy Metal, then Metallica came along and perfected it. So you better thank Ozzy, for he gave us the music we all crave the most. Heavy Metal baby!!!!!

Their first two albums (Black Sabbath, and Paranoid) were definitely the best. Their later stuff sucked because they felt they had to live up to their "metal" standards. But the best songs would have to be Wicked World, Black Sabbath (song that got me into them), and War Pigs. And just think, it all started with that flat 5th in their first song...

Brew
11-09-2004, 03:24 PM
Paranoid = Over-rated.

Sure it was a great album, but its way too over-rated and causes their later stuff to be over-looked for not being as ''metal'', I quite liked the use of synthesisers, instrumentals and all the different styles they did in the later albums.

Well, they were both bands of this classic rock/heavy metal gap bridging, so it's not that strange. It's just that Sabbath was far more on the metal side, especially post-Paranoid.

11-09-2004, 06:17 PM
Maybe I should correct myself, everting post-S/T album is more metal. Paranoid is a good mixture of the original classic rock style of Sabbath and the style they had which would eventualy become Heavy Metal.

Zefferon

Makes sense, figuring it is a very solid song. And, at the very least, the lyrics are relivant today.

Me, I can't say a favorite song. Heaven and Hell, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, NIB, and War Pigs are very soild songs I can't help but like. Planet Caravan and Spiral Archetect are cool songs in their own way. Neon Knights and Symptom of the Universe kick ***, though Neon Knights might just be because of Dio's voice.

actually, the band name came from the movie 'black sabbath' by boris karlof in 1963.
the song, ozzy came up with. he got it from geezer's strange encounter. one night, this black figure appeared at the foot of geezer's bed. he thought it was satan. after that, he painted his room orange. when ozzy heard that, he wrote the song 'black sabbath'. and actually (contrary to popular belief) the song discourages satanism.

the song, ozzy came up with. he got it from geezer's strange encounter. one night, this black figure appeared at the foot of geezer's bed. he thought it was satan. after that, he painted his room orange. when ozzy heard that, he wrote the song 'black sabbath'. and actually (contrary to popular belief) the song discourages satanism.

/me adds more details.

Geezer got given a book all about Witchcraft, Black Magic etc...and he kept it locked away in a cupboard. One night he saw the black figure at the end of his bed, got scared almost to the point of pooping himself (ok, maybe I made that bit up), and then got rid of everything to do with Satan in his room. When he checked to see if the book was still in its cupboard the next morning, it had vanished.

Not long afte, he wrote the lyric ''What is this, that stands before me. Figure in black, which points at me'', which was related to his experience.

And on the topic of film/song/band name, the song Black Sabbath came first, they named the band after the song. I believe the song was named after the film Black Sabbath.

I don't know why, but the chorus to Zero the Hero make me laugh:

"What you gonna be, what you gonna be brother
Zero the Hero
Don't you wanna be, don't you wanna be brother
Zero the Hero
When you gonna be, when you gonna be brother
Zero the Hero
Impossibility impissibolity mother
Really a Hero"

They just make me think of Hulk Hogan, standing in a wrestling ring calling out a wrestler, because he said ''Brother'' alot.

1) He flew off a quad and has gotten screwed up on drugs multiple times. He also got diagnosed with Multiple Schilrosis back in the 90's, but he got over it.

2) Cozy Powell, 1947 - 1988.

Look out for second hand music shops, they normally stock cheap and good quality vinyl.

And my dad got me into Sabbath, both my parents went to see them on the Never Say Die! tour and my mum bought Blizzard of Ozz on vinyl, which I now have.

Both my olds are into rock, my dad's seen loads of bands like Judas Priest, The Scorpions, Metallica w/Cliff Burton, Iron Maiden when they were first starting out - supporting Samson (Bruce's band before Maiden), Ozzy w/Randy Rhoads, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy etc...he went to quite alot of the old Monsters of Rock festivals.

Sabbath are possibly the most creative influence in metal or rock ever, but they do need a new album. only one problem- vocalist.

Im not entirely sure of the situation between Iommi and Ozzy, and Iommi and Dio, but the reason Ozzy left, and Dio left twice seems to be because of clashes with Iommi

However, well worth listening to is Live Evil, which possibly reflects Sabbath more than any studio album ever could.

I also think that post-Ozzy Sabbath is not such a bad thing, and Dio is, afterall, another mammoth in Metal music.

And, lots of people may hate me for this, but he has a better voice than ozzy, but ozzy is....... OZZY, which is something Dio will never have

Best Sabbath song: Children of the Sea
Best Sabbath album: Black Sabbath
Best Ozzy song: Running out of time

Best Dio song: Sunset Superman
Best Dio album: Killing the Dragon

On the subject of a new Sabbath album, they recorded a few tracks for it back in 1999, but then Ozzy got pressured into releasing Down to Earth, and the band went their seperate ways again.

Now that they're back together, I think they want to try and get a new album done, but I'm not sure if it will happen.

Dio has said that he would like to work with Iommi again, but not Geezer and Bill.

But a wah is definatley used on N.I.B for the bass.

What's Sabbath's drummer name? He rarely gets mentioned anywhere it seems to me.

Woa, I was just messing around on my guitar and I just made a song that sounds like a Sabbath song. I got to get the riffs down before they leave my mind.

The Last Supper.

Not only do you get an entire concert, but between songs there is interview segments with good bits of band history and funny stuff in general.

Well worth buying.

but it can be annoying when you are listening to a song with the volume right up and suddenly an interview jumps out, but almost all of them are piss funny (except for the story about tony's fingers)

So I finally found this thread on page 4 of R&M...

Anyways.

Sabbath's main drummer is Bill Ward, 2nd in command for drumming is Vinny Apiche(sp?), who went on to form Dio with Ronnie James Dio when they left the band after releasing Live Evil.

Cozey Powell drummed for Sabbath during the mid/late 80's, and Ozzy's drummer Mike Bordin drummed for them at Ozzfest 1997.

On the reunion tour in 1998/1999, they had Vinny's kit set up behind Bills just incase Bill couldn't hande touring due to having a heart attack not long before the tour started.

I'll shut up now :)

'tis about the devil falling in love with a mortal woman.

And they named it after Bill Wards pen-nib like beard.

And they didn't intend for it to be dubbed Nativity in Black.

shadow_stalker

i think its the bit of a pen that you use to write with

someone (on these) forums posted in a thread about songs that relate to your life that NIB is the song that most relates to his life, i was pissing myself laughing at that

Its the back end of a pencil, sometimes has a rubber/eraser attached to it.

If you see any early photos of Bill his beard looks a bit like one, and on the Never Say Die DVD he has a beard like it again.

yeah that always used to be on scuzz, the song is really bad aswell so its only appropriate that it has a bad video

Brew
11-17-2004, 11:17 AM
True.

In one video, I can't remember what song it was for, Sabbath didn't have a bass player.

So they got some random bass-playing dude off the street for the video, then gave him an audition for the band. Apparently he sucked so much they had to get rid of him quickly.

And for the Star Trek fans (like me), the woman who played Tasha Yar in is in the video for No Stranger to Love.

shadow_stalker
