Just cos you're bassist can't play Sweet Child o' mine doesn't mean he sucks. He probably could but can't be arsed because it's pain in the arse for bassist to learn cos it variates quite a lot and Duff does a few fills. I was listening to it for a year before i got round to learning it
I learnt the intro to Sweet Child O' Mine, it was a bugger to get right.

I was just thinking today about ozzy and iommi. And when you really think about it you get the feeling Iommi hates ozzy. What do you guys think?
Iommi has never really liked Ozzy, thats why he always put Ozz on the side of the stage at gigs, and himself in the middle.

Most of the shows they did towards the end of Ozzy's era in Sabbath, he got shunted to the side of the stage.
He's on the side on the Never Say Die DVD.

do they have any bass solos
The intro to NIB is a bass solo.
*thinks*
Other than that, Geezer didn't really get much chance to do any bass solo's, neither did any of the other Sabbath bass players. But when you listen to the early Sabbath stuff, especially The Warning, the bass is pretty much a solo anyway, with all the improvised groovin' and whatnot.

Andy very nice songs there. Why ever did black sabbath stop doing improvised bits like on sbs?
The rebel sounds like it was pulled straight off the story of... vol 1
Dont much like Rob Halford singing supernaut
Blow on a jug is just...well...
Halford + Supernaut = pretty bad.
Ial Gillan + Supernaut = absolutley shockingly poor.
Don't they talk over The Rebel on Vol.1? If so then the dude that I got it from must've found it somewhere else.
My guess for Sabbath doing less improvising over the years, is lack of drugs. Back in the day they used to go on stage high, especially Geezer who'd go on stage tripping on Acid.

How does Geezer get that clunky, crunchy, hard attack sound on his bass, but keep the tone clean?
I can only assume palm muting.
Although it's stupidly hard to do on bass,
You might want to try and add a lot of trebble to your sound too, wah is a must, especially for the N.I.B sounding kinda scene.

Good Stuff, I think I should get into them more. Any album suggestions besides Paranoid?
War Pigs and Paranoid for me too.
Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules are their best CDs.
And what a frikken coincidink, Ronnie James Dio is in both of them (he replaced Ozzy after he left).
Live Evil is the best Sabbath album to get with Dio on it.
Dungeon are cool.

Lord Brum's Black Sabbath Recommendation Post!
Ok, seeing as we get alot of people asking in here what albums/songs are good as stepping-stones to the world of Black Sabbath, I figured I'd make this post then get you guys to link it whenever someone makes a post along the lines of:
'' 'sup you funky Sabbath d00dz, whats a good album to get by Black Sabbath?''
So...here we go.
Albums - Ozzy Years
I'm going to keep my opinions out of this part of the thread :p
Most of the guys in here have said that Black Sabbath and Paranoid are the best albums to get first, to be honest you'd be best buying them in order.
An album to avoid from the Ozzy years is Live at Last, its a crappy bootlegg and you'd be better off buying Past Lives, or Re-union. Also if possibly, try not to buy the 1996 Castle Remasters of the albums, the quality on them is poor, worse than my vinyl copies.
Dio Years
With only a choice of 4 albums, its not hard picking which one to buy. They're all as good as each other, but I'd highly recommend Live Evil as a first purchase from the Dio years, then the rest (Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules and Dehumanizer) in that order.
Tony Martin Years
I've only heard the albums Headless Cross and TYR from the Tony Martin years, he also featured on The Eternal Idol, Cross Purposes, Forbidden and Cross Purposes Live .
I've heard snippets of Cross Purposes Live, I'd recommend it if you're after a live album thats not got Ozzy on it.
From this era I'd highly recommend TYR
The Rest
Born Again
From what I've heard, this album only really appeals to the hardcore Sabbath fans, and fans of anything that contains Ian Gillan. The songs that I've heard are good, but a bit of a let-down from the Dio years.
7th Star
This is actually a Tony Iommi solo album under the Black Sabbath banner, its a bit hit and miss in places, but worthy of being in your collection.
Compilations/Best Of's
This is simple, if you want a good compilation album, buy The Best of Black Sabbath, it gives you alot of Ozzy songs, along with a few Dio and Ian Gillan songs I think.
If you're an Ozzy pureist, I'd recommend We Sold Our Soul For Rock n Roll, although it only covers upto the Sabotage album.
Live Albums
The best live album is probably Re-Union, with Live Evil, Past Lives, Cross Purposes Live and Live at Last coming behind, in that order.
Now then, the moment you've all been waiting for, this is my list for which order to buy the albums in (the ones that I have):
Volume 4
Black Sabbath
Never Say Die!
Live Evil
Heaven and Hell
Master of Reality
Sabotage
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Technical Ecstasy
Headless Cross
TYR
Mob Rules
Dehumanizer
Paranoid
Songs
If you're cheap and lazy, here's a list of songs to download to give you some inspiration for which album to buy: (not in order)
Tomorrow's Dream (Volume 4, Ozzy)
Supernaut (Volume 4, Ozzy)
Neon Knights (Heaven and Hell, Dio)
The Law Maker (TYR, Tony Martin)
Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath, Ozzy)
Iron Man (Paranoid, Ozzy)
The Sign of the Southern Cross (Mob Rules, Dio)
TV Crimes (Dehumanizer, Dio)
Air Dance (Never Say Die!, Ozzy)
Gypsy (Technical Ecstasy, Ozzy)
Headless Cross (Headless Cross, Tony Martin)
Jerusalem (TYR, Tony Martin)
Trashed (Born Again, Ian Gillan)
7th Star (7th Star, Glen Hughes [I think, my memory is hazey at the moment] )
Megalomania (Sabotage, Ozzy)
Sabbra Cadabra (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Ozzy)
The Warning (Black Sabbath, Ozzy)
Hand of Doom (Paranoid, Ozzy)
After Forever (Master of Reality, Ozzy)
Yeh...I could go on for awhile recommending songs.
Well, I hope this post has been usefull for some of you, any questions feel free to ask them, and any of the regulars, feel free to add songs to the song list etc...

It was designed to look like aload of crap by Don Arden, because at the time he & Sabbath weren't getting along very well.

Well not much is happening in this thread. Ill set things off by starting a little trivia.
What year did Ozzy first leave Black Sabbath?
1977.
Replaced by Dave Walker (I think thats his name)
Came back in 1978.
Released Never Say Die!
Finally kicked out in late 1978/early 1979.

*sigh*
Mk 1 Black Sabbath = Ozzy/Geezer/Iommi/Bill
Mk 2 = Dio/Geezer/Iommi/Bill
Mk 3 = Dio/Geezer/Iommi/Vinny
etc...
There have been roughly 40 different Black Sabbath line-ups.

They actually wrote an entire albums worth of material, and played an early version of Juniors Eyes on TV with Dave.
When Ozzy came back he didn't want to use any of the stuff that had been written, so they wrote what we now know as Never Say Die!

I listened to the paranoid cd all day today... it was so awesome. I haven't listened to that since like October... War pigs = amazing song. I've only got original vinyl copies of most of the albums, but not one for Paranoid.

Wahoo openmindedness. ALthough I still prefer Ozzy. Are you into Dio's solo career at all? Its really good.
I'm into pretty much everything Dio has done at the moment, from his early days in Ronnie and the Red Caps/Elves/Ronnie and the Prophets, to his days in Elf and Rainbow, Black Sabbath then finally his solo career.
Rainbow - Rising is one of my fav. albums at the moment, its brilliant. I can't find a fault with it at all.
Ohmwork came today :) I've heard about half of it...
...its pretty good. Rather than use the bog standard intro-verse-chrous-solo-verse-outro structure, the music is heavily riff based, and there are little to no solos. I'm not so keen on the vocals at the moment, but they'll probably grow on me eventually.

I think it has alot to do with the fact that the earlier songs were written FOR Ozzy, and the later Dio album songs were written BY Dio FOR Dio. I admit that Dio singing Paranoid sounds rather wrong, but he does a better job I imagine than Ozzy singing Heaven and Hell. I don't think many would argue that Dio isn't a more accomplished singer. Bands tend to write stuff their vocalists can do well; it's just that I like the material with Dio more anyway.

Up to Never Say Die! the vinyl are originals/second editions all bought by my old man back in the 70's and 80's. The ones I've bought myself (H&H, MR, LE, BA, TEI) are all second hand.
