The Jacksonville florida band, Cold first hit the music scene with this album.
Regrettably, they were signed on by Fred Durst. Undervalued and underpromoted are the two key words to describe any album these guys have come out with. No differencehere either. This album, while far from as polished as 13 ways or as emotionalas YOTS, is a decent start. Its heavier than the others, more flawed but i find it does grow on you. Not good for starters though.
Scooter ward's hoarse, sometimes soaring voice is the backbone of cold. A lot of gloom wrapped around distorted guitar and a dark bass, driven by a drummer that i think is one of the best in modern music.
GO AWAY- this was one of the singles on this album. An interesting way to start an album, telling the listener to 'Just go away'. Its got the soft-heavy thing going, with a bass driven verse and an agitated chorus. one of the easiest songs to get into on this album. I think, this was the video
in which Scooter wears the cowboy hat and had hair. i cant find that video and would like it if someone could

GIVE- easily the best hard song on this album. You super freak, you super Fcuk. For reasons i will never know,i love that line. 'like a bitter pill thats lost its taste, i'll take the whole thing anyway.'
UGLY- this, imo, is cold's strong suit. sad acoustic ballads that sigh with emotion. Its a talent that would be honed to perfection on the 13 ways album with 'bleed'. 'The whole world loves things of beauty and intrigue, those things i ve never had one'. Nice acoustic song.i taught this song to the kids i teach guitar to.
EVERYONE DIES- A good song, far from great but yet very listenable. Scooter's voice and the gloomy driving guitar hold this game together. i just realized this, this man haas an obsession with outer space.
STRIP HER DOWN- i compare this with RHCP's could have lied. not musically, but otherwise. He talks about how he could have been a bad person but he didnt. There is the bitterness here though.
INSANE- a slower song on this one. for anyone that says that the lyrics aren't poetic enough, this song is your answer. This is pretty moody, but thats to be expected .
GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD- i find this almost psychedelic in its own way. Its a highlight to this album. I like to think of this as a song for the paranoid. Its possibly about schizophrenia (?).The musicianship is wicked here.
SERIAL KILLER- not very good. Its songs like this that tell you 'hmm these guys havent been around long enough'.
SUPERSTAR- A song about Kurt Cobain? You can sense Scooter's desire as well as aversion to fame with the way this theme recurs in all the albums. Send in the clowns on 13 and The day seattle died on YOTS.
Average.
THE SWITCH- Another good song. Its got nice guitars all around. I find this to be another recurring themewith Scooter, this condemnation of and love and regret of well, manipulative tramps. 'she likes to fcuk, i must confess'...hehThis theme is again explored on 13 Ways and YOTS. this is a standout track, btw.
MAKES HER SICK- Nice closer. Its a faster song. Again, the drumming is top notch. They will however have a much better closer on their next album, the atmospheric 'bleed'.
OVERALL, this is a decent album. this is hardly the second coming, but its interesting nonetheless. This is a good sign of things to come and will be an interesting buy for anyone that has liked the albums that follow.
i'd give this a 7/10 or a 3.5/5
