HeavyRiva, thanks for putting it in much clearer (and nicer) words than me. Sorry everyone, didn't mean to be an *** about it, I was just kind of rushed.
Yeah, I knew When The Tigers Broke Free was about Rodger's father... good song... very atmospheric.
I don't really like "When the tigers broke free"
It doesn't stand up to their better work very well.

Well I don't think it was intended to be a "Floyd Masterpeice", just a song with Roger expressing his memories of his father, more of a personal thing, but thats why I find it so good.

You can easily notice the big difference with the absence of Roger's songwriting on that album, but it has some good points.. Fletcher Memorial Home is a good song.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: The Final Cut is teh lose.
It's a good album if you throw it in the general pool of albums, but... All other Pink Floyd Albums > The Final Cut.

I really think The Final Cut is a lyrical album, not a musical album. Lyrically, it's arguably the most mature thing to date by Waters. However, musically, it's very subpar.

Yes. Yes. And YES! Even Roger Waters, the egomaniac who refused to sign a copy of The Wall for a fan because if had signatures from the other members, said it was good. It's great. It goes back more to their roots.

He acclaimed it and he wasn't even on it!?! Wow, that's pretty impressive. You'd think he would be bitter about it. I have Momentary Lapse of Reason and I'm really not that impressed with it. It's still better than most of the stuff out there, but not great like Floyd's other stuff.
So then is The Division Bell more proggy and less poppish than MLoR? Another question, is the album cover of The Division Bell those two Aztek looking statues facing each other?

Division Bell is great. Its got two instrumental tracks, and its really creative. I wouldn't say its super progressive, because the Pink Floyd sound had been done for 20+ years by then, so its hard for it to be "progressive." However, it definitely doesn't have that 80's pop feel of AMLOR. I highly recommend it.

I think Shine On You Crazy Diamond has some creepy lyrics:
"remember when you were young/you shone like the sun/.../now there's a look in your eyes/like black holes in the sky"

To be honest, I couldn't tell you. I listened to it pretty late last night, and it was sent to me by magicbus (I think). So, it could very well be a mislabeled recording from Pulse or DSOT. I don't have DSOT, so it might be from that, and I haven't listened to Pulse in awhile. However, I don't think it was the Pulse version of Comfortably Numb. Didn't sound all that familiar to me.
Sorry its late, but I'll send you Hey You right now.
Edit: Actually, I won't. I just set up my new computer today, completely spaced. So, when I get a chance to copy all my old music to this thing, I'll send it your way. If you're really impatient, I believe magicbus put his AIM screen name up there, so you can IM him and have him send it to you.

I listened to The Wall again today. I decided one of the creepiest songs on there (not THE creepiest, but creepy nonetheless), is Waiting For The Worms. Not only the increasing yelling at the end, which gave me chills, but also the lyrics. The whole dictator thing going on there. Comfortably Numb and The Great Gig In the Sky also recently gave me chills, which is good cause I stopped doing that for a while. I thought I was emotionless to music.
Now I'm gonna go watch the movie again cause I want to see the animation.
And yea I know, its near impossible to pick your favorite Floyd song, but Any Colour You Like is just so psychadelically awesome, and it brings memories of the earliest Floyd I listened to.

Having not bothered to read back further than this page, excuse me if I am repeating.
Considering the topic seems to be favourite tracks/albums, I feel obliged to bring up Wish You Were Here. This is a really incredible album. This album is the perfect follow up to Dark Side Of The Moon, providing the same genius - but in a totally different way. Dark Side dealt with life, death and madness - or at least this is my interpretation. Wish You Were Here deals with much the same issues, but instead of approaching them from an analytical perspective, making a commentary, the Floyd are conveying their actual experiences. The death (and mourning) of Syd Barret is, of course, the theme of the album at first glance, but upon closer inspection the same issues as Dark Side become clear - and the Floyd shows us how it is to actually experience life, in particular death - and the madness in between.
Listening to Wish You Were Here, you are transported into the minds of The Floyd, and it is described, in the most exquisite way, what it is like to live, feel death in your close vicinity, and witness the madness which fills the gap.

Disagree, Waters voice better fits the cynical, depressing, dark nature of the album. The combination of their voices is well done, but you need both of them.

Gilmour does sing on it...and to DeusExMachina, I thought that Gilmour did the "There is no pain, you are receding" parts of Comfortably Numb as well.
Yeah, I thought so, but Riva said Gilmour did the doctor part, so I was confused. Whatev.
And no, I don't think The Wall would have been better if Gilmour had done the singing. I just can't imagine anyone but Waters singing Run Like Hell, or In The Flesh.

Bob Geldof really fits great as the "Pink" character in The Wall, and his voice doesn't sound that far off from Roger's on "In The Flesh".

He doesn't really sing it on "In The Flesh?"... well kinda.. but I see it as more of a speech or something the second time, because he commands certain races (blacks) and lifestyles (gays) to leave... I don't know, I just don't see it as a song as much as the first In The Flesh.

Gilmour sings chorus and Waters sings verse on Comfortably Numb.
The first time I watched The Wall, I was thinking In The Flesh would be just like the song. I was a little suprised and kinda disappointed when Geldof started singing cause he sounded too exaggerated. I guess I got used to it by the second song, but it definently caught me off guard the first time.
Gilmour, just to confirm, the pompeii dvd has the entire old version? or just parts of it? I'm just concerned cause I wanna make sure that it has everything that's on the old version. It bugs me when stuff gets left out.

OK...since I've never seen The Wall, does Geldof actually sing on it, or does the film simply contain the songs off The Wall, as sung by Waters and Gilmour?
Bob Geldof sings on both of the In The Flesh songs, and I'm positive that's all he sings, rest is all from the band as normal. And The Wall DVD has all the songs on the album plus When The Tigers Broke Free and What Shall We Do Now (which are both great songs in my opinion), Hey You isn't "in" the movie, but if you get the DVD you can watch it as a special feature...

Also, on The Wall DVD, they butchered Mother. And I didn't like how they superimposed the "we don't need no education" chant over the solo in ABITW pt. 2. But, it's still definitely a good buy.
Well, I have just watched the DVD of the Wall, and can I say I was both impressed and upset. Impressed with the sheer artistic beauty of it all, but upset with both the lack of a few key songs, and also, as Deus said, the suprisingly badly twisted version of Mother.

Animals is a great album, probably my favorite after Dark Side. But I have it on vinyl, and do listen to it quite a bit. And for The Wall, I just don't care for it. I'm not a huge fan of Roger's taking over, and The Wall is basically his. (the reason why I was rather disapointed of the two Final Cuts.) My friend has it on DVD also, and I can watch it whenever I please.
Atom Heart Mother is quite under rated I think. Fat Old Sun is such a great song. Gilmour is great on it. It's interesting and experimental and I like it.

Did you get it on DVD? If you did, then watch the documentary afterwards, it helps make sense out of the movie.
still can't decide which is better
The Wall....or.....Dark Side of the Moon
I usually listen to DSOTM more often then I listen to The Wall.

Oh man I love the funky parts. This rules man. My favorite funky part ever in on SOYCD pts VI - IX . Its got like the coolest chord progression I've ever heard, and tone itself is enough to make it rule. Ok, listening to it now, the whole funkiness starts at about 6:30, but the awesome chords are at 7:30. DUDES. If you have this song on your computer listen now! THIS RULES.
True that. My fave Water's bass lines are in that part of Shine On.
I'm reading Inside Out lately, and Nick talks about recording Shine On, and when Syd came into the studio for a visit at Abbey Road. He said that the most effective part of the album was when Shine On fades out, and Rick plays on keyboards and trumpet, part of See Emily Play. I never noticed it untill I read that. Have you guys?

I orded the Wall Bootleg from Ebay. It's wicked. Whenever you get a bootleg, you get the real bamd. DVDs can be edited, polished, the best takes are put on, etc. But even though the DVD has shotty camera work, it's really cool. Gilmour messes up pretty badly on the Cnumb solo though...

I have a question for you guys about Animals. I was reading the "which ones pink" "book" that said that Animals was about comparing EVERYONE to three different types of animals. Is this really what it was about?
I thought it was comparing everyone in the cooperate business world to the animals, not to everyone .If you notice, the booklet insert always featured pictures of the large manufacturing plant. It would be very pretentious to try and categorize everyone in the world to four types of people. What are your thoughts on this?

I think I like the second part better. It seems like most prefer the first part while the second one gets overlooked.
I watched the Wall Dvd today, and I wasn't all that impressed. Decent but not up to my expectations. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for the Wall.

I really like The Trial too, but my favorite animation is on Empty Spaces. I love the part when the gun turns into the needle and all that stuff. Real cool.
And yea I like SOYCD 6-9 a lot, because it has funkiness to it, and a really cool slide solo. I really love the guitar parts in 1-5 though, so I'd probably say I like that better.
I've been trying to play Echoes after seeing it on Pompeii, but I can't really get the part where it turns funky and Gilmour puts on all the distortion. Its like he changed the scale from the first half of the song. That part's real cool too.

In 6-9, when the funky part starts, I'm never sure of this: Is the main line being played by roger or Rick on synth? 'cause I hear another bass in the background, but it seems that Rick can't be playing the sharp piano part and the synth line at the same time??

If you're talking about the line that starts at 7:07, I think that is synth, because it sounds too high to be played on bass. Then when the really high synth part starts, I'm thinking they just overdubbed the same line for a little, then let it fade out.

My problem with playing that song is doing the high fret bends without muting the string :-/

DeusExMachina

I have a pretty good powertab of all of Echoes. But, it's got like, an unbelievably large number of guitar parts. He's got six different guitars set up, plus a bass. Although, at most 3 of the guitars are playing at any one time, and the keyboard part is tabbed as a guitar, so it probably is possible to play it on one guitar to make it sound decent.

Ive been working On Another Brick in the wall - All the parts From I - The Happiest Day of our Lives - II - III - since i just got exposed to the magic of Delay on my new amp. I plan on learning echoes very soon, or some of the riffs at least. I read the chords on that funky part from the Dvd and played it and it sounded pretty sweet, but i dont plan on learning the whole song...thats a huge dedication

None of it is too hard. Gilmour doesn't make really complex solos. Nothing much harder than ABITW part 2, which is loads of fun to play.

Nice collection you've got there. :thumb: I'd say get The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn next, then Meddle, then The Divison Bell. The first two of those in particular are really good stuff, and The Division Bell, although it lacks Roger Waters, has some moments that rank with the very best that the band made. The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn has a very different feel from their later stuff, but every Floyd fan should hear it, if for no other reason than Syd Barrett. Check out some live stuff as well, like Pulse. :)
Anyone other than me perfer Syd Barrett opposed to Roger Waters?

I'm not such a fan of their sax stuff, mainly because I hear ripping sax parts in Jazz. But i'd have to say that my favorite song to just sit and listen to is Echoes, but many would disagree due to it's length.

I'm sure you'll be hard pressed to find someone in this thread that disagrees about Echoes. And I agree that more impressive sax parts can be found in Jazz, but I just love how well the sax fits in their songs.
The saxophonist for DSOT had the world's greatest mullet. :p
And Echoes is one of everyone's favourites, at least those in this forum. :)

So maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but he still has an awesome mullet. Does he have a name or no?

I played sax for about three years, first alto, then tenor, and a bit of baritone. I haven't touched one for about a year now.
How long you banned for, RnR?
was banned for 14 days. Something like 8 left...
How's the album Meddle? Like seriously, I've heard songs off of it but how's it as a whole?
Brillant, if you can handle the dreaminess and laid-back feel. San Tropez is quite good, as is Echoes (all 23 minutes of it). Of course, I am somewhat biased, seeing as I am a Floyd Fanboy.
