Dogs is my all time favorite along with Shine on You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-7. One of These Days is pretty cool too. As for my favorite lyric from Floyd its probably " And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sewn. And as the fear grows, the bad blood slowly turns to stone" from Dogs. As for the sax, Dick Parry was amazing. Us and Them, Shine On, Money, and many other songs wouldn't be so great if it wasn't for that Tenor Sax. Amazing.
I fecking love the intro for "One Of These Days"
"One of these days I'm gonna git' you!!!!!!!!!!!" <awesome

Dick Perry was just as much a genius in that band as all the others.
I actually transcribed the sax parts in DArk Side of the Moon for guitar...and their pretty though. Especially in money, theres parts where i have to tap, Whammy bar, Pull of and hammer on, bend, all that stuff in one short minute. Its actually the hardest part of the song, i just cant get my guitar to sound like a frikking sax.

Sheep, what a song.
I never thought it dwindled, like most really long songs do.

I specifically like the end of sheep, the loud guitar chords until they fade out into pigs on the wing.
I had such a hard time finding that album too. when i did, it cost 18 bucks! Now i think thats a rip, as well as Meddle, especially since thats pre-DSOTM era. I dont understand the concept of pricing floyd albums at all.

Same here, probbably one of their best songs.
Allthough it was really easy to find, and was only £6.99 (maybe about $10?)

I haven't got it,
I've heard the song "Mother" though, it's pretty good.
Anyway, Dave Gilmour said this about it:
"When I look back on it, Atom Heart Mother was a pile of crap"
That's on the back of a dvd I've got, i dunno if he was being serious or not.

Heres prices and avalability i have to live with
Meddle $17, seen it once about 2 years ago
DSOTM $13 Everywere, even target (with worst CD selection ever)
WYWH $15 Almost everywere, usually with DSOTM
Animals $18 Seen it twice a couple years ago. Picked up the last copy a few months ago
The Wall $32 If it is somewere, theres only 1 or 2 copies left anyway
all the big time retail stores are all into new music, and even the smaller music stores like FYE and Sam Goody. Its a tragedy to music

That's pretty competitive I gotta say,
The wall over here is £10 ($14?) which is pretty cheap, last year i got lots of music vouchers and bought a crap-load of classic rock albums, it's so awesome them being this cheap...

I would personally never get a best of album. Floyd albums are made with concepts, best of albums would be too jumbled to enjoy. I never enjoy listening to a floyd song without hearing the entire album with it. I would say
DSOTM which will take a while to get used to the first time
The Wall which you should understand the story before listening
Animals
Wish you were Here
then whatever from there. Wish you were here is a hard album to just appreciate, especially when your totally new to floyds style. Welcome to the Machine is my fav song on the album, but i dont just listen to it, i hear the whole album.
Floyd is one of them bands the last song wouldnt of been half as good if the next or previous one wasnt there. The concepts are what make it as good as it is

They asked a roadie, Studio Manager, and a think one of there band members several questions in the studio and put some of there answers in certain places on the CD. Those are all them guys talking you here in Speak to Me, Great Gig, Brain Damage and Eclipse
Waters asked normal people, like people off the street, as well. It turns out that Wings was in the same studio one day, so he asked their guitarist some questions. He gives the line that says "I don't know I was really drunk at the time." I never knew about the one at the very end though, that's pretty sweet. :thumb:

In a lot of places kids who barely know anything about Pink Floyd wear the shirts because they think it's cool. Therefore if real fans wear the shirt, they are often considered posers. This is especially true with that Dark Side shirt.

"Post War Dreams", "The Final Cut", "The Gunner's Dream", and "Two Suns in The Sun Set" are all tracks that I feel are worth looking into. I have that album. It is very very wierd. There is a lot of guitar solos and **** in it. And in the instrumenst it lists, it says the guitar is a 12 string played with a feather. That album is ****ing WIERD. Go buy it.

Heh. Sorry.
Out of curiousity, what's everyones favorite Pink Floyd song purely in terms of lyrics? It changes all the time for me, but right now its probably Us and Them or Echoes. And, of course, WYWH is always at or near the top of the list.
As I have said before, Us And Them all the way.

I agree. Us and Them has beautiful lyrics. One of the best songs on the album in every way.
Us and them is my favourite Pink Floyd song :).

Us and Them is amazing. I've been listening to Echoes more and more recently, and that song is friggin brilliant. From a music theory standpoint, all the half cadences and deceptive cadences during the build up to the third verse are just used amazingly well. It's just this sense of "when's it coming... when's it coming" and then there's that awesome guitar riff, and its just like "YES!" I love that song.

I pity this thread...ive only rad the first page but i seems as if it was all the WYWH , DSOTM, and The Wall fans......and A few exceptions of Animals.....ok first of all DSOTM is overrated in a way...it is an awesome album but is given more appreciation than it always should....The best floyd song is obviously THE NILE SONG from the album "More: Music from the Motion Picture." This song is perfect in every way as in it mixes psychadelic sound with heavy distorted metal guitars and vocals better than what they normally did...in the song Atom Heart Mother off of the album of the same name there is a truly awesome slide solo.....and any floyd fan that picks WYWH over A Saucer Full of Secrets is insane......OK now the Wall is a dark creepy album but I am ashamed to say the album The Fragile by NIN is a dark two disc album that is fairly similair to The Wall but sadly alot better so please listen to it and compare them....now lastly.....listen to all the Floyd songs before u pick your favorite...
if you dont like pink floyd, why are you even in this thread?

Yeah, not accepting a band because of its popularity and "over-ratedness" is silly, most people on these boards seem to abuse the word "overrated" easily. Floyd are far from overrated, they inspired many bands, are unique in their own sound, and are unlike any other band out there. Also they created the first concept album, as Gilmour said earlier. The class factor makes you think it is capitalism, but the fact the pigs are in control (mush like communism today) adn decide who gets what is why it is about communism, plus it is based of Animal Farm, which is a book about communism.

Yes, but I thought it was about Communism gone wrong. That is, although it strives to be a classless society, the basic nature of humankind means that a class system still exists. Hence, although the society touts itself as Communist, it appears to be a Capitalist system.
Gossamer175

I think it's about capitalism actually...if you listen to Dogs, it's very much song from the point of view of an older "dog" (middle class) teaching a younger dog about capitalist ways, and reflecting that maybe he's been taken in by the system as well, and that he doesn't have as much freedom and ability to live his life in a good way as he might want.

Can you download an Mp3 from the site, or what?
I can't stand it when people discover DSotM or The Wall but don't explore the rest of PF's catalogue, I had to force two of my friends to overlook Dark Side and TW to hear Animals, WYWH, and Meddle. I'm not saying Dark Side and TW aren't superb albums, because they absolutely are, but it's sad some people don't dig deeper and explore.
I understand, but I personally think DSotM is the best Pink Floyd album, even after hearing almost everything else they have.
Not to degrde their other stuff though, PF is one of my favorite bands.

My take on it is that the Dogs keep trying to get ahead and succeed for themselves, but really they are controlled by the Pigs, who use Dogs to gain control and keep it. No matter how much success the Dogs have in life, it won't matter. The Pigs have control over the Dogs who they then use to control the sheep. I think it can be applied to communist Russia as well as a purely capitalist system.

I'm still on the fence as to whether Waters intended "Animals" to be in the same allegorical sense as "Animal Farm." I've read the article Magicbus posted, but on the surface, and on a deeper level of symbolism, there are a lot of similarities.
All I know for sure is that the album kicks ***. Hooray for prog!

I just realized what may very well be one of the most under-rated Pink Floyd songs. Any Colour You Like. I always marvel at the guitar solo, and the interesting keyboard work at the beginning.
What do you guys think of Any Colour You Like?
What do you guys think are some other under-rated songs by them?

I think that's respectable. They don't want to commercialize their music, that's all.
As for Live at Pompeii, I really need to find that on VHS before its too late. Because they won't be selling VHS tapes after this year. And I heard the DVD had some funky editing and isn't as good as the VHS. But I might just have to get that, cause that's all I can find.

It's good that Pink Floyd still have respect for their own music, not selling it out.
The only artist I cant get mad at for using his music in advertising is Jimi Hendrix. Mainly because he's dead.

Well, I don't have the DVD, but I almost bought it (**** responsibility, my sister doesn't need a Christmas present THAT bad) and it said on the back that it has the original version plus the new version which has animations and stuff. I could be wrong though.
As for Pink Floyd marketing their stuff, they did once. They appeared on an ad for a German soda because they were told it would bring ticket prices down for the fans. When they realized how much they were being used, they lost their naivete and haven't appeared in an ad, or commercialized their music since.

Oh I completely agree... If I had to pick a albm that PF reached their pinnacle in music success, I'd arguably have to say DSotM. The main reason it became so popular and you see tons of spectrum shirts these days is because, that album was a masterpeice. As much as I've listened to it (almost everyday) I still never get tired and it resides in my CD player as we speak. I just meant that PF has alot more than just DSotM to please the ears. :)
I have yet to get the Live at Pompeii video... I'd like to see Echoes (one of my favorites) being played live, that would rock. :thumb:
Indeed it would. I'm currently trying to order it from my local record shop.

Just a Rodger Waters thing but there's lots of special guests.
Bryan Adams, The Band, Thomas Dolby, Van Morrison, The Scorpions, Joni Mitchell, Jerry Hall and lots more.
Lots of backup musicians for different songs too.
Rodger Waters sings on all of them as he is the star of the show.
edit: they have a whole symphony too ;)

I don't know exact specifics, but he went down the path of drugs, and got himself to the point where he went crazy and play the wrong songs on stage, or forgot to even show up to gigs and concerts... the rest the band was tired of putting up with it so they kicked him out of the band... after that.. I have no clue what happened... although I know he showed up at the studio during Pink Floyd's recording of Wish You Were Here (the album), which that album was actually about Syd, kinda freaky....

First album -most of the songwriting was all done by Syd, the rest of the band heavily relied on him. After Syd showed to be unreliable for live shows(Playing wrong songs, just standing there staring into the air, etc) they had their friend David Gilmour(OMG!) play live, while they kept Syd to do the songwriting. But eventually he wasnt even able to do that so they totally kicked him out(a whole bunch of managers left with him). The next few albums consisted of the band trying to emulate Syd's sound(While Syd starting to release some solo stuff which is quite good BTW). Eventually Roger emerges as a songwriter, and they start to develop their own sound.
During the recording for Wish you Were Here, Syd suddenly showed up. He was fat, and going bald, the band didnt even recognize him.(Irony eh?)
Pink Floyd: The Illustrated Discography: "During the
Wish You Were Here sessions a fat, shaven-headed person wearing grey Terylene trousers, a nylon shirt and string vest wandered into the studio. The band ignored the visitor and kept on playing and it was the visiting Andrew King who finally recognised their guest: 'Good God, it's Syd! How did you get like that?' To which Syd replied, 'I've got a very large fridge at home and I've been eating a lot of pork chops.' The whole event was slightly un-nerving since the theme of the album was based on Syd and his subsequent madness."
Nowadays, he pretty much keeps to himself.

No. The character "Pink" is a fusion of Syd and Roger. Also, the song WYWH isn't about Syd. It applies to him, sure, but its not actually about him. I'm in a rush, but I'll clarify later.
Pink is almost all Roger, and Roger's interpretation of Syd's mindscape. Hence, Roger can be considered the main character "Pink" seeing as although it is somewhat based on Syd, it is based on Roger's egocentric view of Syd.
