But, Waters made that band. He was the creative one. Writing lyrics and making the songs. He did everything for that band.

How can you say he did everything? Honestly.. He did a ton, lyrically. But the rest of the band did the music. Waters rarely even played bass on the albums, most of the time the band would get pissed cause he couldn't do it after so many tries, so Gilmour would come in and get it done quick. Gilmour also wrote a lot of music for the lyrics that Waters produced. It was a communial thing, Waters wrote lyrics, and the rest of the band went from there.

But what about Animals and The Wall? Waters wrote everything didn't he?

standard

Animals he wrote, except for Dogs.

The Wall, he wrote all except..

Young Lust
Comfortably Numb
Run Like Hell
and The Trial

Nope, the whole band wrote Animals. Rogers wrote almost all of The Wall, but Gilmour wrote most of the guitar work. Rogers always wrote always wrote the lyrics, though.

But on the back of the Animals cd case, It says (Waters) Next to all the track names. I figured that meant 'wrote by:'

standard
09-16-2005, 03:46 PM
It does, and a lot of songs do say Waters, but a lot of times he didn't write the lyrics, or play bass on the song for that matter. Waters never gave his band the credit they deserved.

Prince of Darkness

The Wall, IMO was the bands best work, as cliche as that may seem. Animals coming second to that. Pink Floyd made good music in the start, but then it was not just Waters working on the music. That was fun psycadelic music they made. But later, Waters was moving away from the band to make the music himself. That IMO, worked. As he grew even more apart of Pink Floyd, he went on to start a solo career. That should be good, as he was the musically creative member of Pink Floyd. Can someone post the Discography of his solo career please. Thanks.

POST 1000 for me. Yipee.

He didn't.

They kinda kicked him and his giant ego out of the band.

standard
09-16-2005, 03:57 PM
Well first him and Rick Wright had a problem, which is why Wright wasn't on The Final Cut.

Gilmour and Waters have really always never seen eye to eye. They've always had disagreances, and eventually Waters just.. left, or maybe they kicked him out? Either or. So Gilmour and Mason brought back Wright to make 2 more, I think, very good albums.

I've always liked Gilmour a lot more than Waters though, vocally, musically, and even as a person. He seems to be a better person.

I lost a lot of respect for Waters when I heard he spit on a kids face who was crawling up on the stage during DSoTM.

What? The Wall? That's under the name Pink Floyd not Roger Waters. I meant like ROGER WATERS. his totally solo work, away from PF.

I think Roger made better music on his own. It's very much more musically great than the early work. Water made the group more mature. The early work, IMO, was them having fun as young adults.

it was a weak attempt at a joke.

I just find the solo stuff boring. there's nothing musically original or exciting about it, the lyrics don't appeal to me and in some of roger's albums the vocals consitute little more than rhythmic monologue.

Roger elft pink floyd because he felt that the other members were simply jealous of his songwriting ability and ebcause he was upset that they said he couldn't sing.

However, an outsider might suppose that the reason roger was doing mostr of the songwriting was that he wouldn't let anybody else do it.

he went on to make some veyr offenisve comments about david gilmour, which in the msot part dave didn't dignify with petty arguments. but they were both pretty silly about it.

Yea. I'm really suprised that they got back together.

That's why Gilmour and Waters with an arm around each other on stage, was simply.. amazing.

Did someone ask about Waters' solo albums?

The only one worth buying is Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking.

It's very Floyd-ish in regards to the conceptual flow, and the music.

The band Roger put together is one of the best assembled. Eric Clapton, Michael Kaman, David Sanborn, Andy Newmark.. Good stuff.

Some people don't like it. I loved it though. I saw the tour and was lucky enough to catch Clapton before he quit the tour, citing that "Waters is a psychopath".

David Gilmour also released solo works. His album "About Face" is actually pretty good. Pino Palladino plays some mean fretless on that album.

I don't know on the DVD. I'll buy Car Ira when it comes out though. I own all the other ones. Something intriguing about Roger doing opera based on the French Revolution.

I assume Roger will record the upcoming event in Rome, and maybe have that on DVD.

I have this book about Jimi Hendrix written by Mitch Mitchell and some other guy and in there Mitchell writes that they went on tour with Pink Floyd and that around the middle of the tour David Gilmour came to replace Syd at their live shows. He also wrote that Syd didn't talk to anybody on that tour (not even to his own band)...

When I read things about Syd that always kinda depresses me...

Yeah PATGOD is much better, but I was just pleasently surprised when I heard his solo album because I heard lots of bad things about it.. It definately grew on me..

As far as his other album goes, I've only heard a couple of tracks from it..and I don't really recall what they were like.. only that one song about an elephant which is crazy..

I currently own two Floyd shirts, one Animals shirt from Hot Topic ( :( ) and a Wall shirt off eBay. There are problems with both though, the Animals one is really tight, and the text on the Wall shirt is hard to read. I tihnk I'll get a Meddle or WYWH shirt next.

As I reach for a peach
Slide a rind down behind
the sofa in San Tropez
Breaking a stick with a brick on the sand
Riding a wave in the wake of an old Sedan
Sleeping alone in the drone of the darkness
Scratched by the sand that fell from our love
Deep in my dreams and I still hear her calling
If you're alone I'll come home

Backwards and home bound
The pidgeon the dove
Gone with the wind and the rain on an airplane
Owning a home with no silver spoon
I'm drinking champaigne like a big tycoon
Sooner than wait for a break in the weather
I'll gather my far flung thoughts together
Speeding away on a wind to a new day
If your alone I'll come home

And I pause for a while
By a country style
And listen to things they say
Digging for gold in the hoe in my hand
Hoping they'll take a look at the way things stand
And you're leading me down to the place by the sea
I hear your soft voice calling to me
Making a date for later by phone
if you're alone I'll come home

God I just love those lyrics. That song makes me feel very good inside :)

Hey You wasn't in the movie. I guess you're talking about the separate video for it though, which was awesom. Would have been cooler if it was in the actual movie though. Highlights of the movie for me were Mother, One of My Turns, Is There Anybody Out There, and Comfortably Numb. The lyrics just match the scene so perfectly in those parts.

Also, the part where the teacher reads the lyrics of Money is awesome.

Meddle is great music, but I don't think it has the flow or impact th at DSOTM has.
TO be honest, I've thought about it a lot, you know, the music industry of the early 1970s, how Meddle sounds, etc., and I've come to this conclusion:

I can't believe that album didn't make a HUGE impact.

Think about it. 1970-71, the music industry was at a stand-still. The world was left shocked and appalled at the breakup of the Beatles. There were no amazing albums coming out at that time. No new ground had been broken. Everyone was just... waiting, waiting to see where the industry was going.

Now think about Meddle. Released in 1971 by a moderately popular British rock band (that right there should have been enough).

Now think about the track-list.

One of These Days - An amazingly hard-rocking song that was incredibly heavy for its time. I'm not sure If there was ANYTHING like that song at the time. Black Sabbath maybe... but please. One of These Days should have attracted the youth looking for a hard sound.

A Pillow of Winds - A beautiful, soft, acoustic song, with romantic lyrics and a flowing voice from Gilmour. This seems like the kind fo song that would attract all of the romanticising girls of the time, looking for a new crooner.

Fearless - Simply a great song. This would attracta WHOLE lot of people.

San Tropez - One word. Beatles. In light of their breakup, fans were looking for a band to fill the void. Listen to the song; you can only agree that it's an incredibly Beatles-esque song. Why wasn't this song all over the radio?

Seamus - This would attract... someone I'm sure.

Echoes - The trippers. Anyone that loved a trippy song would love Echoes. That song is the epitome of long, trippy jam song. Really, you can practically smell the weed coming out of the stoner's mouth while toking to Gilmour's monotone lyrics.

Are you serious? 70-71 was the rise of prog, not to mention harder rock than there ever had been, and even the beginnings of metal (amongst other great albums coming out). The Who released Live at Leeds and Who's Next, Zeppelin put out III abd IV, ELP formed, the Allmans released Live at the Fillmore, the Dead put out Workingman's Dead, American Beauty, and Skull and Roses. Jethro Tull released Benefit and Aqualung, the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 was absolutely mindblowing, Yes released the Yes Album and Fragile, Traffic put out their two most advanced records to date, etc. Ground was being broken everywhere you looked.

Naturally the Beatles' break-up was a huge hit on the industry, but real rock fans knew what was going on and knew the importance of the records in these years. Maybe rock fell away from the mainstream but it certainly didn't slow down.

His drug abuse got out of hand, and regularly didn't attend shows, so they got Gilmore to fill in for him. Eventually they just dropped Syd and brought Gilmore in full time.

He went insane from acid. Powerful stuff. Somewhat similar to Brian Wilson, but a much worse condition. When Pink Floyd was performing, he'd just sit there and stare into space, and so they brought Gilmour in, who was a friend of Syd, to cover for Syd during live shows. As his condition got worse, they permanently replaced him with Dave.

Aside from Lunch's answer, there's also the fact that it didn't become popular precisely because it appealed to so many styles. DSOTM is a very specific album, with a specific style. Meddle is the kind of album that all stereotypes would like some of, but no stereotype would like all of.

*rescuing this thread from the 3rd page*

Which Floyd album are you currently listening/hooked to?

For me it's Animals, It's so amazing. My favorites right now are both pigs on the wing and the song Pigs(3 different ones). Im hooked on this cd, It hasnt left my cd player (except for Frances the mute by the mars volta ocasionally)

Also, where are you people getting all these bootlegs from? I want some :(

I've gotten to Pink Floyd ones from other members of the forum.

My favorite album right now would have to be The Wall, although i find that there are a few tracks that are on the album don't add too much to the story and aren't even very good songs. I only enjoy about 3/4 of The Wall, but what a great 3/4 it is.

Has anyone else noticed that since the Live 8 concert they've been playing ALOT more Pink Floyd on classic rock radio? In the past few weeks I've heard a ton of Pink Floyd songs they never would have played on the radio a year ago, like Welcome To The Machine, Mother, and Run Like Hell, just to name a few.

Nope. They still keep playing the same 3 songs where I live.

Another Brick In The Wall, Comfortably Numb, and Hey You.

Great songs, but I wish they would play something else besides stuff off The Wall.

Pink Floyd's album sales have gone way up since Live 8. Accoridng to Wikipedia sales of Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd went up 1343%, while Amazon.co.uk reported increases in sales of The Wall at 3600%, Wish You Were Here at 2000%, Dark Side of the Moon at 1400% and Animals at 1000%.

Agreed, I love The Wall, but it's such a teribly depressing album, it really has no ending to it, as they explained in the movie commentary.

My favorite's gotta be WYWH, all the songs on there each sound unique and each one is great. I actually prefer "Have a Cigar" to "Money".

I've noticed this thread has gone into a bit of a dip. There's nothing wrong at all with talking about random stuff like what Floyd songs you heard on the radio and what your fave album is, but when that's all that's going on, the thread sort of dies a little inside.

So I've got a new idea to motivate the loyal thread-goers. Make something inspired by Pink Floyd. It can be a painting, a drawing, a poem, an article, anything, inspired by an album, a song or by the band themselves. It'll help you really start thinking about specifically why you personally love Floyd, and make something cool at the same time :D When you're done, just upload and post it, and we'll talk about it :thumb:

I've got a little something in the works right now, I can't really reveal too much yet of course, don't want to ruin the surprise...

Time is the greatest Pink Floyd song, amazing piece of artwork, DSOTM is. Took 1 n a half years to make 9 songs. Money is the most known, but it is a very great song, The raggity sax and the guitar after makes me get pumped :P

As for Comfortably Numb, it's alright, I'm not the biggest fan, Wish You Were Here has great vocals and Run Like Hell is one of their best instrumentals. I also like Welcome To Machine.

I believe you mean on the run, not run like hell. Both very good songs, but I'd have to say my favorite album is not darkside like most people. Dont mean to change the subject, but while i was loking for aussie floyd tix, I noticed some concerts had a ticket limit and some didnt. Do ticket limits apply strictly at venues or does it depend on the concert? Tix go on sale this saturday and I was planning on getting about 8+, but dont want to invite more people then can come...info?

I also think DSOTM is better then the wall...The Wall tends to weaken sometimes like with fragments to hold the storyline together. It cant keep my interest all the way through; i guess its the flow. But the concept of DSOTM also is much more comparible to anybodys perspective too.

I'd really like to hear that theory, I can kind of see where you are coming from. Even though all the songs are completely different... they just feel... connected somehow. I'd really like to hear your opinion, maybe it will help me piece together whats in my mind.

BTW, I think DSotM > Wall. The Wall is a great album, but just too depressing for me. Great music can come from sadness, but really I'd rather be happy from listening to music. I'd definitely say the first half of Disc 2 is the best part by far though.

The thing I love about DSOTM is that it's so many great songs and moments in music melted into about 43 minutes. It isn't like The Wall, where you have to basically set aside an entire evening to listen to it. DSOTM can fit into any part of my day with ease. I listened to it every night before I went to bed for about two months straight a while back....now I only listen to it about 3 or 4 times a week.
