I saw it at the store, but I'd never heard of it, so I didn't get it. I might now, I'm not gonna download it though
a)because I think anything good enough is worth buying
b)I'm running outta hard drive space on this compy :-/
I'm actually getting a tad bit, I guess the best word would be "used to", Floyd right now, I think I'll take a little time off them and listen to some other stuff right now so they don't go stale with me. Understand that I've been listeing to them almost non-stop for like 3 months now.

You could listen to a different band...
Or you could just buy a new Floyd cd and listen to that :thumb:

Wasn't there some kind of problem with the first cut?
On the LAP: director's cut, you can hear dave and Rick muttering about it, although its hard to catch exactly what they're saying.

Wall addict here.
I've been listening to The Wall since I was 3. Still listen to it at least once a week and love every second of it. Almost inspired me to take up bass so I could play along to 90% of the album, however Gilmour's bends are very persuasive.
Yeah, the Wall is fairly good. I also share the love for OBC. Something about that album just makes me feel great when I listen to it.

I don't think the Final Cut is as strong as other Floyd albums. It's decent, but just not there best work.
If you liked The Wall alot, then I'd reccomend Animals. If you liked WYWH and Dark Side more, then I'd go with Meddle.

I felt the Final Cut was there worst. It was slow, boring, and unevertful the whole way through. Not one song caught my attention.
Id actually recommend floyd albums to people in order from 73 - DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, The Wall. Goes from their album which they perfected their style, to mellow passionate rock, to more hard, satanic stuff, then into an album which sort of has a bit of each...but the tracks dont blend together as well. Rock Opera style is responsible for that...but after them 4, Id recommend some material late 60s/early 70s.

About the vocals, that record has some killer vocal melodies. A gunners dream for example, the melody is genius. Just listen to the way the notes follow each other and how the melody is drawn out but yet fits perfectly. THR's melody and OTTF are very good aswell.
Why'd you take out the "In the form of a scroll..." in your usertitle, PinkFloyd?
When the Tigers Broke Free is such a great song, you can really tell how Roger feels about his father's death.

I've noticed that in some Pink Floyd songs there are these "moments" that really stick out in my head whenever I think of the song, like in Another Brick In The Wall Pt.2, when Dave's guitar line is in and then Roger shouts "HEY! TEACHER!...etc", and then Dave's last line in Comfortably Numb before the guitar solo, and of course the outro solo to Sorrow.
Anyone else have these..."moments"?

The crescendo type intro at the beginning of the instrumental song "Marooned", when the guitar hits and holds that high note, I can listen to that over and over, one of my favourite Pink Floyd pieces, evokes so much emotion in the guitar melody.

Yeah, in Comfortably Numb when Gilmour starts hitting the high notes at the end, when Mason flows perfectly from his solo into the first verse of time and Waters sings "digging away..." and when Gilmour sings: "Forever and ever!" and the slide guitar comes in on High Hopes.
I wish I could be original, but my favorite Floyd period is 1971-'79.

Everything between PATGOD and Meddle was sub par to bad. I really enjoy their mellow psychedelic prog era (as does everyone) and everyone knows what I think of Syd's years.
I really hate to compare those 2 eras even though Syd's era is better. It was more original, more creative and the most psychedelic music ever heard. I'm not saying latter era couldn't be original or creative (because it was!) but you just can't compare with Syd's psychedelic imagery and spaced out music. It was as if he was trying to communicate with another universe just amazing amazing music.

Look what Gilmour said about syd barret and i think he is wright:
"It's sad that these people think he's such a wonderful subject, that he's a living legend when, in fact, there is this poor sad man who can't deal with life or himself. He's got uncontrollable things in him that he can't deal with and people think it's a marvellous, wonderful, romantic thing. It's just a sad, sad thing, a very nice and talented person who's just disintegrated."

concept albums striaght up own, and I love how on most of Floyd's albums, the end of track one blends well with the start of track 2 and so on.
Ya Live at pompeii is terrific... quite possibly the best concert idea ive ever seen
ofcourse, its not exactly a concert.
Me and my dad (whos in a local blues band and is a bit synical of pink floyds music) were watching the concert and we both noticed something
In a few scenes you can see people sitting on the rocks watching the concert
Are these crew members of perhaps just people passing by, getting a free show? HOW AWSOME WOULD THAT BE!?
not just to see them live, but to see them play some excellent ambient jams in an ancient greek theatre.

I personally believe my best piece of advice to any Floyd newbie is to buy an album, wait till like midnight, then listen to it in bed with your headphones turned up like all the way. That has to be the best way to listen to any Floyd album, especially Meddle, WYWH, and the Wall.

I may eventually post the sax solo. I believe it's possible to get the one for Us and Them elsewere though, but I havent checked. I could imagine it's hard to do though...theres certain parts in Money that are challenging, but the rest is a breeze.
If anybody has any other ways to play the Welcome keyboard solo, please share. Specifically the sound...I could Imagine youd need a wah for some expression, a touch of delay, comp, and maybe some distortion; but the tone construction is out of my reach. All comments are welcome!

I don't like The Final Cut (as anyone who has posted in this thread much will attest to). However, there are a couple tracks on it I love, particularly The Gunner's Dream and Your Possible Pasts. Mostly, I think it's just the dregs of The Wall.

i love final cut, i mean i spin in circles singing and it seems like the almbus is over in 10 minutes. and about the great OBC, i find that album so relaxing and just..woh..haha good stuff. youve got the very relaxed like spinny music in it, just plain out awsome but weird, then some old fashioned Classic Rock with The Gold is in the... i mean you never realy here Floyd like that, just wow man i BOW to Floyd..
I love Obscured by Clouds whole-heartedly. It may be poppy, but it is still a great listen.

It's worth a listen. It's comparable to dsotm. It's such a good album, and people are like "Oh I'm a true Floyd fan, I won't listen to it because it's not the whole band".. **** that. It's such a good album. Lyrically probally their best work, it's deep. The solos are AMAZING, epic, although none of them are too long. The sax solos, all that good stuff. It's a good listen, I recommend every atleast give it a go. It's the album that got me into PF.

Well I say that for songs like Two Suns In The Sunset.
"The sun is in the east

Two suns in the sunset"
The song is about the atom bombs on Japan.
Maybe I like it so much because the lyrics connect with a lot of WW2, which Waters' father did die in.

"Daddy flew, across the ocean"
"Leaving just, a memory"

I think I have finally made my list of my Top 10 Favorite Floyd songs of all time. (Out of Meddle, DSotM, WYWH, Animals, and The Wall) I'll say a bit about why after each song.
10) Sheep
This is my favorite song off Animals, barely beating Dogs. I think what I like about it is Gilmour's awesome guitar riffs, Wright's great effects and keyboard, and Roger's great bassline and vocals. But easily the best part of it is the epic outro riff by Gilmour. It's just insane... Gilmour will always be my favorite guitarist :)
9) Fearless
Pretty much just a really great song. A beautiful, light guitar tone, an uplifting bridge riff, fun imaginative lyrics by Gilmour, generally just an awesome song. Great to listen to when you're feeling down :)
8) Astronomy Domine
Yeah, it's not on the albums I listed above. I've never actually heard the entirety of PATGOD, just this song. It's just a really groovy, trippy song, with off-center lyrics in Syd's affable English monotone. Just a cool song :)
7) One of These Days
One of the most rocking songs I've ever heard in my life. Starts out with a heavy bass note echoed over and over, then joined by another bass, with some well timed effects, up to the drum-guitar break-in, with some great slide guitar by Gilmour. And a huge rise up to the infamous Mason lyric "One of these days/I'm gonna cut you into little pieces", then bursting into an all-out fast jam, with Gilmour and Wright leading with great playing by both. Just a rockin' song :)
6) Nobody Home
This may seem kind of an oddball pick, but it's definitely one of my favorite songs off The Wall. It's just so simplistic; great bluesy lyrics, great piano, great everything... it's one of the only songs of The Wall that doesn't have a million effects on it, but still stands out in my mind very well. When I used to sit in my bed at night and listen to The Wall, this song would just give me goosebumps from its greatness. Definitely one of the most underappreciated Floyd songs.
5) Echoes
This song had grown on me a whole lot. When I first downloaded it, I never really listened to it, and I never did until I bought Meddle. It struck me as a good song, but not one of the best. But as I listened more and more, I really started to appreciate it more. It's a song you just can't describe I guess... it's just... good :)
4) Wish You Were Here
Who doesn't like this song? One thing about music is that often when you hear a song, it reminds you of something... or someone... this song definitely reminds me of my old science teacher. he was a Floyd fan too, but we never really talked about them at all... I knew this was one of his favorite songs by them, and I think of him everytime I hear it. It's just such a beautiful song anyway... brings many emotions to you... one of Floyd's best, easily :)
3) Time
This is mostly because it is my dad's favorite Floyd song. It was at his house one fateful weekend when I first heard "Dark Side of the Moon", on vinyl, the same vinyl my dad and his buddies in college wore to the nub by playing so much. I say it's a fateful weekend because A) I pretty much discovered Pink Floyd and B) because it was when my dad told me he was getting remarried. I met the woman he was marrying two weeks before they married, and she lived 2 1/2 hours away. We listened to DSotM on tape on the way down and on the way back. It's just a memory that sticks so much in your mind...
2) Brain Damage
This is my 2nd favorite Floyd song, by a very close margin, for a few reasons. It was literally the first Floyd song I'd ever heard. It was the first song I ever learned on my guitar. It was the song during which my dad told me he was getting remarried. Of course the song itself is great, but its position on my list is partly because of its meaning in my own life. But that's what music is about, isn't it :)
and.... my favorite Floyd song ever...
1) Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Where do I start with this song... I guess I'll start when I first heard it, on my class trip last year to the mountains of North Carolina. I bought WYWH while I was down there, and listened to it when we walked back from the mall to our hotel room. I remember just listening to it and being completely amazed by it, and the entire album. But I think the main reason that this song is my favorite is that it has the strongest tie to imagery in my mind than any other song... Whenever I hear this song, I think vividly of riding the old train through the mountains, stopping in Bryson City, one of my favorite places ever. I remember staying up 'till 2:30 in the morning playing poker with my closest friends. And, most of all, I remember the breath-taking beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, and whenever I hear this song, I feel like I'm there again... I guess it's good that I have such a good memory tied to such a good song :)
Well, that was my list. I don't really care what you say, comment if you want, whatever.

I love The Final Cut.
I forgot how much of a masterpiece The Wall was, the theme of depression and insanity always kind of turned me off from it, but musically it's genius.
Roger's verse in Hey You is absolute perfect, because in the story, Pink just realized his wall was too high and just Roger's voice matches the perfect tone of desperation.
It's great.

well for most of my life ive only heard another brick in the wall pt 2, run like hell, time, and on the run.
then when i was 11 (2 years ago) i started listening to the rock station on the radio a lot and got introduced to brain damage/eclipse, mother, hey you, wish you were here, have a cigar, welcome to the machine, comfortably numb, and breathe.
then at the beginning of this summer i took a listen to PATGOD and became obsessed with it and it sparked a new series of obsessions over their other albums.....so basically im listening to album after album for the past 3 months and my obsession might possibly stop once i finish listening to every single album.

A song I haven't heard much of on here is Fat Old Sun (Off the album Atom Heart Mother, early 70's I believe). The lyrics are beautiful, and what a solo! :)
I love that song. I'm much more familiar with the version on the Gilmour acoustic DVD, however.

Pompeii is incredible, but it depends on what you're into. I've always been a fan of mellower music, and thus the acoustic DVD appeals to me more. But, Pompeii has some great tracks, and some insight into what studio time was like for the band, so... it's really a toss up. Depends on what era you're more into: Pre-DSOTM, or later stuff and stuff Gilmour wrote after 94?

I have it, and I can't stand it. It takes away from the original feel of the whole thing, and there are all those annyoing planet animations.
The good thing though, is that the entire 'original' footage is in the bonus features.

That's exactly what I found too...I have it on vinyl. I listen to it now and again, but sometimes it just seems like more of a tribute, than a pleasure to listen to it. I've never figured out just what it is, but I think you've got it.
I just came here to tell you guys, that if you have that Windows Media Player thing where it shows the cool designs that go with the music...you should put on Welcome to the Machine (although I'm sure any Floyd will do the trick...) and turn that Windows thing to full screen so all you see is the crazy designs and stuff, and just watch it go with the music. Heh heh...I obsessed over that about six months ago. I got it perfect....I know exactly what to set it at if I want that clean (SOYD, ABITH solo type tone...) and to get the more overdriven (Time, that's basically what I tried to perfect it to) tone. It's perfect.
Although everyone who has a half decent knowledge of Pink Floyd usually comments immediately on how Gilmourish my tone is. I tell them it's just the perfect tone. ;)

I was very upset about the thread closing. :(
Right now my tone is actually decent. Well, it's not decent, but I'm happy with it and it's probably the best I'll get from my gear (Epiphone Les Paul, Marshall MG15, PodXT). It's running through an emulated 1987 Roland JAzz Amp (Andy Summers of The Police used it for most of their stuff) with bumped up mids and bass and the treble a little flat. The overdrive is at about 3, so the control of the crunch is really the hands. The harder I hit it, I can get a nice tube-overdrive sound, but still play really clean if I want to.
Also running a U-Vibe and some Reverb, noise gate, and a Fuzz box that is usually off, but switches on for distortion (duh).
I'm pretty happy with it :D

To tell you the truth man...you could probably get it pretty **** close with that gear. I use a Epiphone Black Beauty 3 (neck pickup is the most beautiful tone I've ever heard) and a Marshall DSL. I've got various effects pedals if I need them (the amp has reverb, and I rarely need to go past that...although sometimes I like delay or flange.) But it sounds absolutely perfect...I can turn it to the Ultra Gain setting and crank the distortion all the way...theres a mid scoop button that makes it perfect. I turn the presence up all the way (some Marshalls don't have that though, I've got an MG30) and it sounds perfect. Bass is about 7 or 8, Mid is about 4, Treble is about 6 or 7.
edit- the strange thing is...when I crank the distortion up all the way (like I mentioned) it doesn't get any more distorted than Gilmour in Time...or that guitar that follows the vocals on Another Brick in the Wall part 2. That's why some people hate Marshall DSL's...because they don't give out crippling distortion. But that's why I like them. I think this belongs more in the Guitar forum, but I'm sure people don't mind.

Discussion about Gilmour belongs everywhere ;)
Listening to DSOTM the other day, I realized that David Gilmour is simply my favorite soloist, ever.
ps neck pickups own, the only time I switch to bridge or both is if I'm just getting too much bass for what I'm playing. The crappy speaker in my amp can't handle too much.
Eventually I want to pick up a Mesa Boogie Rect-O-Verb 2x12 so I can stop complaining about my crappy amp.

I never quite understood this whole thing about needing to be on drugs to understand The Wall....they even said that on TV one time (MTV or one of those channels). It's The Wall! If you've ever heard the album, you should know exactly what the albums about....and the movies exactly the same thing. You don't need to be stoned to understand it, it's very clear what it's about. Although I've only watched it stoned....(and once on mushrooms, couldn't concentrate though).
You definitely don't need to be stoned for it to make sense.....it is a beautifully amazing movie either way.
edit- and what on Earth did that one person say about The Wall? We don't need new education???! We'll let them off on the technicality of obviously being a Floyd noob.
Have I heard the song Money? Of course! I'm sure we all have, as it is probably one of their top five biggest hits. Not one of my personal faves, but a very sweet bass line, and also a nifty little solo.
Yeah, the solo is great. It's also supposedly the only number 1 hit to be written in 7/8 time. Or something to that extent.

I would imagine The Wall would be harder to understand when on drugs.

Dark Side of the Forum? Hah, that's clever.
About as clever as Ashlee Simpson.
As for Pink Floyd, they're just about as clever as Dark Side of the Forum.
Which is... as I said before, about as clever as Ashlee Simpson.
...or maybe they're in the same league as B2K
...
By the way, I think "Us and Them" is the worst song ever written.
Pay no mind to this dickhead, guys. He's also trolled the Dream Theater thread too complaining that they weren't following a certain geometry or something. Ugh.

Just ignore him, he has nothing better to do than try to get people angry on an internet forum. WheepingGuitar, do you have Is There Anybody Out There? Someone uploaded it in the A&I YSI thread but it didn't work.

I know everyone one knows about DKSOTM and the wizard of oz but I found out that Echos sinks up with the pilot episode of DeGrassi? When the part after the seagul part comes on, its like a sonic orgasm?!
