The secret message is:

'Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to old pink, care of the funny farm. Chalfont.'

05-10-2005, 04:08 PM
You guys missed the real kicker that makes it hilarious, after he says Chalfont, he's about to start talking again, and then in the back ground, very faintly, you can hear someone say "Roger, Caroline's on the phone" and then he says "Oh" and it cuts off. :lol:

Well, in 1979, it wasn't so clear. I mean, now we have the technology to easily reverse a recording, so we recognize the sound of backwards vocals. Back then, I would imagine it wasn't easy to reverse, so the backwards singing would just sound like jibberish until someone reversed it.

That's true. I remember when I was real little (I mean like 7), I remember riding in the car with my dad and him telling me about the Beatles, and how there was a rumor 'back in the day' that one of the songs played backwards said 'Paul is dead', beacue he was the only one barefoot on Abbey Road and stuff, and he said that noone could check it because only really expensive record players could go backwards. I remember thinking that was the coolest thing ever.

I read about that a few years ago...some New York City DJ found it out 1 or 2 years after the album was released and played it on the radio. I tried it myself, and it was intentionally put in there...pretty interesting if anybody cares to do it (soundrecorder works fine too, comes with about all Windows computers).

Somethin about 'congratulations, you found the secret message...the funny farm...' and some other junk. Its hard to hear over the backround noise though.

Yeah its really good. Disk One is Obscured by Clouds (bout 5 min) When You're In (9+min) Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun (11min+) Careful With That Axe Eugene (16+min) Echoes, best version I've ever heard )23+ min). Disk Two is all of Dark Side of the Moon and One of These Days.

The only problem is the bass over powers some of the instruments, but if you just turn the bass down on whatever you listening to it on it is no problem at all.

Animals is a common step after getting those three. It's from the same era, and I sort of view it as a cross between WYWH and The Wall. It's a very solid album.

My parents like em somewhat. They admitted to hating them in the 70s, since when bands like the stones, Zep, Deep Purple, etc. were whipping out such new unheard of hard rock albums, Floyd was just sort of laid back...a bit too boring for that generation. Thats why most the parents i talk to are liking floyd now more then ever.

Come on guys, the most haunting piece of work by Pink Floyd (excluding lyrics) would have to be the 5 minute breakdown in the middle of the song Echoes on the Meddle CD. I mean, christ, Gilmour makes his guitar sound like wolves howling to each other! Other than that, Lyrically, the most haunting or creepy song is , uh, Goodbye blue sky from the wall.

(p.s. ntice how i capitalized "Gilmour", and not "christ")

My dad loves Pink Floyd. It's his fault I'm addicted to PF. I remember he used to make me listen to his brand new Pulse album with the little flashing light all the time. My dad was front row center at the 94 PF show in Montreal.
My uncle (his brother) was one of the security guards and personally met and talked with David Gilmour!! (Gilmour spoke in french right away) What a classy guy.
I wish I was old enough to have been there.

My father promised me after the concert that if ever they came back, he'd take me.

The first time I ever listened to an actual album (besides a couple of indivuidual songs) was when I found my dad's DSotM vinyl amongst his record collection (I swear that every college student during that time had a copy), and me and him played it that day on his Yamaha record player with surround sound. It was awesome. He told me some stuff, but he's definitely not nearly as much a fan as I am now. I remember him saying that he never listened to WYWH, and that he had heard it wasn't as good as DSotM. I couldn't disagree more :thumb:

BigTrav415

BTW, at my school dance tonight, we had one of my friends controlling the sound system/music, and I brought WYWH and got him to play it for the finale. No one had every heard it but me and him I'm sure, but evryone was dancing to it, so I guess it worked out pretty good.
(I would have played Comfortably Numb, but I decided that it would go over their heads, and one poor bastard played a song no one had heard before and this bitch came over, pulled out the CD, and snapped it in half. As you can see, I was a bit squeamish, but I decided WYWH was traditional enough)

Yeah, that has happened to me and my group of mates, at formals, dances and parties we put on some of our classic rock music and everyone just looks confused and frowns upon it, I played Run Like Hell by Pink Floyd and recieved a heap of dirty looks, It doesn't dampen my spirits, just makes me want to play more.

Yeah man, thats the way to be, they dont wanna except how great classic rock is, its theyre loss, i love being the odd-man out when it comes to music, i hate being normal, what realy gets me thogh is for example, i was at a dance a few years back and they played that puf daddy song, where he used Kashmire-Led Zeppelin, and they all were doing theyre little two step jig thing, so i asked to play the realy kashmire, they woulnt do it at first, said people would complain, but then this one guy said yeah put it on (rock fan posing as a hipp hopper), and the crowd hated it, and were saying they stole in from puf daddy, until i got on the mic., and explained that zeppelin was around 30 years before this crap, and they all just shut up right then and there, great feeling...that night i introduced maybe 10 out of 200 to classic rock, but thats good enough for me...

I'm glad so many people agree with me about dances, any music that they've never heard before is considered complete ****. I was seriously considering playing both Run Like Hell and Comfortably Numb, but as I said earlier the bitches at my scool can't live without their mainstream bull**** hip-hop. They played that ****ing gwen stefani song "holla back girl" or something TWICE. Jesus, I hate people! Actually, the person organizing the dance put a sheet in some class where you put songs you wanted, but all the songs I put got marked over and someone wrote "Rock sux". I'm not kidding. WYWH is aout the most traditional sounding PF song, so it worked pretty good as a finale. Oh yeah, and my friend was begging me to play Another Brick pt. 2, but that would incite riot.

Thats becasue every kid dreams of being a "Rebel", i mean comon, if you actualy listen to the entire song, it never talks about the public school kids, and as before, its about "crapy" teachers, and about the riots, i got what you mean, im not saying that "rap" riots you got to love, im just saying, personaly i love riots! The song has a better meaning in context of The Wall as an album. Rather than just a rebellious kid, it represents literally more bricks in the wall. It's a key song in developing the plot rather than being something with mass apeal to school kids.

(except maybe for that band Mayhem, where one of the members killed himself and the other guys found him and ate his brains out of his skull...)

Go watch the documentary Dig on the Brian Jonestown Massacre if you want to see a dysfunctional band (though still amazingly great).

While we are talking about the Wall, am I the only one who prefers it to DSotM? I just mentioned this in CR but I'll take song quality over flow any day. Not to say that Dark Side doesn't have amazing songs, but the Wall is a little more consistent IMO. Maybe it'd because it has many. many more songs. I don't know, I guess it's just me.

I think a lot of fans prefer The Wall more. But I think The Wall focused just as much (if not more) on flow as Dark Side did. Dark Side has arguably no weak tracks, while The Wall certainly has some.

I would say some of the instrumentals on DSotM are weak. They have little musical appeal at parts IMO. Sometimes it's just sound effects and buzz or whatever.

I just downloaded a 1972 live DSotM on Limewire, listening to Breathe right now, sounds completely different than the studio version, but not in a bad way. Pretty crazy.

EDIT: On The Run sounds completely different, they're using guitars and drums, very few effects. It hardly sounds like it at all; I'm only assuming it's On the Run actually, can't tell except from placement.

I listened to Meddle and Animals today and realized that I really love Meddle. I always kind of overlook it, and didn't used to really like it compared to their other stuff, but really enjoyed it today. The bass in One of These Days is awesome, and every song is great except for Seamus. Echoes just speaks for itself.

And the end riff in Sheep is awesome, but when I listened to it today, I enjoyed Pigs (3 Different Ones) the most.

About two months I had to go down to Wilmington (2 1/2 hour drive) to meet the lady who was going to be my stepmom in two weeks (yeah and I had just learned about her :upset: ) My dad put on his vinyl of DSotM the day before (first time I'd ever heard it) and that was all I could think about. He dug up a cassette of it somewhere, and we listened to it on the way down the next day, and then on the way back the next day. It was pitch dark, going down I-95, like 12:30 PM. Awesome.

Ironically, the next time we went up I had bought The Wall and WYWH (as well as DSotM CD) so, we listened to that too.

It sounds like what you have is Eclipse of the Dark Side, A Piece for Assorted Lunatics (the original name for DSOTM). That was the first time Dark Side of the Moon had been played by the band on stage. This is before the album was relased so that is why it so compleatly different. They substituted the tape effects for instrumental jams on songs like On The Run. I have that one, its good I just wish the sound quailty was better. (from the '95 pulse tour) so cool. i prefer dsotm to the wall, because dsotm pretty much all the songs are like great songs and keep me interested(maybe on the run which gets repetitive). but the wall, there's like 12 songs on it that just lose me, most of them are a little too emotional and slow. i prefer animals over both of them though.

After watching my video a few times, years ago now, I have been hoping for a DVD version that wont drop quality!

And Yeah! Comfortably Numb rocks on that tour (as does the last solo in Another Brick pt.11, Gilmour plays the one after the words but then that dude (used to know his name... I think he is a session player that did the tour with them) rocks it completely, man he is a freak!

Hey guys, I have a great idea for the Pink Floyd thread. Basically, we pick an album, and then we each dibs a song, and then analyse it line by line, or verse by verse. This would be a nice way to see who thinks what when it comes to Pink Floyd. We can also comment on everyone's analyses.

This is going to be a very casual thing. It's not going to dominate the discussion, etc. Thoughts?

I vote DSOTM first. :)

Back wken I was in high school, which is not all that recent anymore, we were studying a topic area in English called "Crossing Boundaries" Now I am an engineer now, so English was never my strong point, so I decided to select Comfortably Numb to analyse about how the person in the song "Crosses a boundry" it is simply proof that you can say whatever you want about song lyrics because you can be very subjective! Now I am not discouraging the idea you put forward, I am quite keen to join in (but would like Animals forst), I am simply glad that I was able to squeeze Pink Floyd into my high school studies to make it more interesting!

If you think that I'm saying that to be 'hip,' you couldn't be farther from the thruth.

For me Another Brick in the Wall part 2 has come to represent what the lyrics say bluntly. School has been nothing more than a place where they create machines, to think alike and not to be any different from society. They never take the chance to figure out children's individual abilities, and so letting many to find themselves flooded with things they just can't comprehend. "We don't need no thought control."

And to simply put the song as one to criticize 'private' school is simply stupid. Do you really think Waters will just criticize a private school and leave behind public schools, where teachers are as bad, if not worst, than in private schools? In a private school when a teachers does something and the child tells his/her parents about it, they would go straight to the school and demand some sort of justice, since the pay much more for the education of their children than in some public schools, where teachers have more freedom.

So, don't you 'comon' me and label me as dick who just listens to Another Brick in the Wall part 2 to be 'hip' or 'cool,' because I'm not. Where I live, there are no 'cool' kids who listen to Pink Floyd, in fact, I'm the only one in my area who listens to the Floyd, so I'm the one getting the weird looks when I listen to them.

Another Brick in the Wall part 2 has come to represent something completely different to me than what was intended in the album. That's the only thing I care about.

Big_Matt

Kids sing "We dont need no education" because they think, screw school and all these teachers, they can't be bothered learning so they are having a whinge.

The meaning of this line, in context, is not about avoiding education, but rather about avoiding the education stlyes which Roger Waters himself went through when growing up. For instance, "No dark sarcasm in the classroom" the teachers were excessivley strict, using the students as a stepping stone to feel better about themselves... much like the class bully does.

The specific case in the movie shows a teacher who lives in fear of his wife... so he makes the students live in fear of him.

This is why the line is taken out of context by kids today, not saying the above no longer happens, I am sure it does, but whinging about the education itself is out of context.

So, you're telling me that when you have a political sattire is just directed at one political candidate? No.

When you do something of that scale is to point out the failure in all of the educational institute, not just one. And how do you know that they're private school? The one where Pink goes everyone goes without uniform, yet the one where the kids are marching do wear uniforms (signaling that it is a private school). You can also see that when they sing the chorus, you see different kids, different schools, saying that it just doesn't happen in one, but in all.

Don't try to be a smart-*** around me.

Well I watched Wizard of Oz and listened to DSOTM. I started the cd once the MGM Loin roared his third time. There were a few things that seemed like the DSOTM could have been an alternate soundtrack to Oz, most notably when Dorthy is balancing on the fence the lyrics on the Breathe Reprise track says Balanced on the biggest wave then at the exact time of the finally beat she falls off the fence. Overall I would say it's just a coincedence that there are similar endings and startings of scenes and tracks. Maybe if I was high it would've been better.

Simmer down, dude. What does it matter what other people listen to? I for one am a HUGE Pink Floyd fan, anyone in this thread will confirm that. However, I like a lot of hip-hop. Just because you don't like the music taste of others doesn't mean that you're right and they're wrong.

Mmm... I don't really consider Great Gig in the Sky an instrumental. It doesn't have set lyrics, but it does have vocals. Whatever, I suppose I'm just splitting hairs here.

Actually, if you listen to the commentary while watching the movie he sorts of explains that the song is directed at teachers who abuse their students (be it physically or mentally). So, yes, we do know what the song is about. Yes, Roger wrote it because of his personal experience, but he also wanted to get a point out. It's like saying that Animals is based on Roger's life and what he experienced in society, rather than criticizing our whole society.

If you're not briefed on the concept of DSOTM, the concept is basically life, which each song represents a different part of life. A man's lust for money begins when this song begins with the sound of the ringing cash registers

Money, it's a gas. Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.

Money is essentially a gas. Everybody needs money to go on with their lives.

New car, caviar, four star daydream, think I'll buy me a football team

Not much to say about this line, except it's the truth. When you have a lot of money, you want to spend it. And fast.

Money! Get back, I'm all right jack keep your hands off of my stack

The line speaks for itself. Keep your hands off of my stack.

Money, it's a hit. Don't give me that do goody good bullshit

As you know, there are people out there who say that money isn't the most important thing in life. This line is telling them to **** off, it's my money.

I'm in a high-fidelity first class traveling set, and I think I need a lear jet.

Again, you've got money, you're gonna wanna spend it on fancy things.

Money, it's a crime. Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie.

Again, the greed of an average man is showing through. He's upholding his morals by telling everyone to share their money fairly, but they better not take any of his money.

Money, so they say, is the root of all evil today.

If you think about it, all the crimes in the world are for only 2 things: Money and Power. Floyd was expressing this.

But if you ask for a raise it's no suprise that they're giving none away

Again, the greed of man takes over and when people ask nicely for money or a raise for a job, usually bosses are reluctant because it's their money.

Not 100% sure, but there is a shape in it. My guess is it is water, with a reflection of something, and some water drops hitting the surface. What it means, no idea.

I think their was a discussion about it before, but something like an earlobe came up (i dont know why), water drops, and some organ or somethin like that, but i didnt stay around long enough to actually see what it was. I found a picture of the whole cover (the album cover is only a fragment of the original picture), but it doesnt help that much more. I mightve saved it, so ill upload it if i find it.

Speak to Me (Mason) 1:16

"I've been mad for ****ing years, absolutely years, been
over the edge for yonks, been working me buns off for bands..."

"I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the
most of us...very hard to explain why you're mad, even
if you're not mad..."

(Instrumental)

Breathe (Waters, Gilmour, Wright) 2:44

Breathe, breathe in the air.
Don't be afraid to care.
Leave but don't leave me.
Look around and choose your own ground.

Long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be.

Run, rabbit run.
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down it's time to dig another one.

For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race towards an early grave.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As in all later Floyd albums (Dark side and onwards), Roger set up DSOTM as a concept album. For those of you who are not able to inference the literal meaning of concept album, it means an album tied together by a singular concept thoughout all the songs.
As he usually does, Roger sets up the first song as an introduction to the album as a whole, foreshadowing everything else to come. Each line in Speak To Me and Breathe tell us something about the songs themselves and also about everything else to come. It begins with the Heartbeat.
The heartbeat brings the album to life. The album itself is about, very generally, life and madness. It begins with birth, goes through life, and ends with a descent into madness, and finally death. After that, we hear a teaser from every song: there are the bells (time), the cash register sounds (money), and finally the screams (the descent into madness; most of the second half of the album). We also hear the voices in the background, which tell us where the life brought about by the album is heading.
Breathe is essentially the lyrical half of Speak to Me. It begins once again with birth, as we breathe in air and are born, and we are immediately hit with the troubles of life. We are afraid to connect with people, we are afraid to expand (in Time: Kicking around/ on a piece of ground/ in your hometown.), afraid to leave. We base are lives on materiality (All you touch and all you see/ is all your life will ever be). We need to take control.
We go through are lives working, and we drive ourselves without reason. This touches on Time and Money again, but also connects to the theme of madness, which we literally dig ourselves into.
The last paragraph continues on to the final end. As we push ourselves for material things, and as we keep ahead of the pack, we balance on the biggest wave, and all that really leads to is, as Roger so aptly put it, is a race towards an early grave.
Its the inside of an ear, with some other images layered ontop of it. Storm Thorgerson (their album designer for everything after saucerful except the Wall) didn't like it and thought he did a bad job).
Edit: beat, like three times
And I also don't want to be a bitch, but, for the earlier analysis of Money, I feel that this would work better, and we could combine it and make a full analysis of the album better if the analysis went a bit deeper then the literal lyrics. Yes, when Roger writes, they're giving none away, a boss might not give away money, but what is the real purpose of the song in the album? simply saying that your boss is selfish is a bit shallow for Floyd.
No, it's quite common for bosses in the industry to not give the musicians their pay. Take the Beatles for example. They never got any money, just "funny paper" which was, "we'll pay you back later, just not now" and they were never paid back.
The real purpose shows how man goes mad for money.
I'm not saying that it isn't true. What I'm saying is that your analysis of a lot of the lines didn't get deep into the meaning of the song. You started to get at it in this post. Money is about people's shallow goals, and how to give meaning to a life, to keep it from drifting away into madness, people create pointless goals for themselve.
I tried to approach that, but I guess you have to read it a couple times for it to make sense. The concept of DSOTM is a man's slow descent from birth to madness to eventual death, correct?
Money was placed in the middle because man was already in the process of becoming mad (which is marked by On the Run). I believe that the 3 things that Floyd describe that turn a mad man are Time, Money, and Paranoia (Us and Them).
Those three songs are just what makes a mad go insane because if you notice right after Us and Them, it breaks into the kind of psychedelic "Any Colour You Like".
Time
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say
Breathe Reprise
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
It’s good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.
__________________________________________________ _______
Time is one of the greatest songs in rock history. It is also probably one of the greatest lyrical preformances ever.
Time starts of the way the last song ended. A low, powerful rumble. It gently fades, and you begin to hear clocks, slowly but surely, ticking away. They tick softly, until the calm is broken by an alarm shock, it's peircing, shrill ring heard above all. More bells, gongs, and other ringing tones are struck, but fade away quickly, and the ears begin to pick up a metronome, holding together one, steady pulsing beat. About once a measure, you can hear two beats, pulsing under the metronome, just the same.
Then the music kicks in. It's starts with just a low tone, followed by some chimes. This basically repets itself, adding percussion, with only a few more minor changes. THe guitar plays a few, simple riffs and notes, the music is mostly focuusing on the drumming now. Then, the drums elevate, and the lyrics kick in:
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
TIme has very powerdul lyrics, all sung with great meaning. The lyrics can be interpreted in many ways, and I hope I can do them justice.
This part coveys the same sort of meaning that many of the parts try and get across: Wasted time. Thos first lines talk about the actuall wasting of time, being idle, not knowing what to do. Needing to fing direction, unfortunaltley, needing someone else to do it for you. Staying in your home town, leading a boring life, eventually, to be regretted.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
This is the part of the song that I would consider the chorus. Within the first line, it shows more wated time, just relaxing, nothing to worry aabout. THen all of sudden, life sneaks up on you. You're old; What?!! Where did this come from?! :confused: What about all my plans. Once again, not being able to find direction, depending on other people to do it for you.
*Insert phenominal guitar solos here*
This part of the song houses th eamazing Gilmour solo. It's pretty tough to describe without hearing it, but I doubt anyone one on here has never heard this song. You can tell how passionatley he is playing throughout the solo, from high, soaring notes, to the lowest, all in a matter of seconds. Gospel singers come in at the end and reluctantly we move back into the music.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Know, you realize you have watsted your time. Your running to follow the sun wanting daylight to never in, just to squeeze in that one more thing. You never catch it though, but from you, comes the sun again. It's still the same, but your not older, drawing ever nearer to your final breath. You're older now, It's getting harder to do things.
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say
The years are getting shorter, almost like life is closing in on you. You have less and less time to do the things you forgot to do last year. You make plans, but they just don't seem to come to surface. You just can't seem to bring them to life. You hang on though; Refuse to die, It can't be you time yet, can it? But there was so much more you had to do! I think I have to add that the last line of the song is very significant in that, by this time, you may not even remeber what you were doing. You may have forgotten why you thirsted so bad for life, a life that you wasted.
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
It’s good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.
THis is the Brethe Reprise. Unlike the dramatic, epic, even sorrowful and mournful Time. This is more calming, just smoking your pipe beside the fire. HE talks about being home again, from a long journey. THis may or may not be conected with Time, it's up for your own interpretation. I beleive it is and I think that one of the most important possible connections is the home again part. "I like to be here when I can". Where is his home? HE is returining from the journey in Time, perhaps he is dead; is his home heaven? MAybew I like to be here when I can means this person has been reincarnated. THe place is comforting, returining from yet another life. Then the bell rings, possibly announcing the prescence of God. The angels and sinners alike fall to there knees, He speaks. It says spell, though it could be prayer, perhaps it could even be this man (or woman) being returned back to Earth.
I kind made that open-ended and left you with room for your own interpretaions. Any responses with what you thought about that part will be greatly appreciated.
Well, that's my reveiw, I hope it wasn't too over the top.
DMV, that was good, but there I want to hear analysis of the Breathe Reprise. In all great works of art (movie, books, ALBUMS, etc.) everything that is there is absolutely necessary. If you read Hemmingway, it seems as if a bunch of random crap is mentioned about nothing, but every word is vital to the story. The same thing is present in most Floyd albums. In Dark Side, every word has a purpose, so you should try to get something figured out about Breathe Reprise.
What is the significance of the fact that time is talking about longing to get away from home, and the reprise is about being comfortable and happy at home? What about the bell, prayers and spells? What is this saying about Rogers beliefs of religion?
EDIT: I actually might do this myself... I'm getting myself thinking here.
AND: this might halp people a bit: On the Run was originally called the Travel Sequence, Us and Them was originally called the Violent Sequence, and (I'm not 100% sure on this one) Great Gig was called the mortality sequence.
I think he'll do fine also, but they are best done together. See, Welcome to the Machine is all about the record business, but in a more general sense, how the world creates a set path for everyone (school, university, 9-5 job, retirement). It's about how each persons life is essentially one piece moving through an assembly line in a machine, except for those who try to do something different. It ends up being about how Syd Barrett was sucked into this machine. Have a Cigar is about how the machine gets you to become a part of it. It lures you in with visions of the high life, telling you you can have it all.
It fits in well on The Wall but really isn't that good alone. After Comfortably Numb I was a little let down by Run Like Hell. I wish they did Dogs or something better to close it out with.
Well, I don't know about the popular part, I don't think it's that popular, but I think Pink Floyd puts it there, because either they love to play it, or it's a great closing song. You have to admit that Run Like Hell finishes off Pulse greatly.
It's pretty good, I just think they could have put a better song on. Here in NY it's on the radio more than other Floyd songs seem to be.
On WYWH I call dibs on Shine On You Crazy Diamond part 1 & 2. I don't think it's necessary for dividing these two songs, since they basically deal with the same thing, which is Syd Barrett.
I almost never hear any Floys on the radio. I have heard Comfotably Numb, ABItW2, Mother and Brain Damage. A couple of them appeared on the philly 500 memorial day countdown
Just because the concepts are similar does not mean they must be analyized together. But I think this should be allowed just because there are not many lyrics in SOYCD(6-9).
I'll have to wait for a ruling from Riva, but I'd allow you to do both.
We are. Right now people are just calling dibs on the WYWH songs while the other Dark Side songs are completed. As I said before though, we aren't starting any other albums until we get WYWH underway.
So far:
SOYCD(All parts until further notice): Slowhand
Welcome to the Machine: Bennyl
Have a Cigar: MYR
WYWH: Riva
Edit: Riva, what about the dual analysis?
And did you know that people bash WYWH like MAD on Amazon?
Look
Buying this CD would erase your credibility. Fact: Pink Floyd are rock and roll's least-respected band. It's the truth!
and...
NEVER BUY THIS CD FOR IT IS HORRENDOUSLY BAD.
IT HAS ONLY 5 TRACKS AND OH MY ARE THEY AWFUL.
AND THE UGLY COVER IS A TAKEN OF ILL RESPECT FOR LIFE AND SENDS YOUR FOUR YEAR OLDS CRYING IN FRIGHT.
overall conclusion: the people who say it is good are either crazy or on dope.
These are about Dark Side...
re you into drugs?
then this is the album for you!
From the first notes of speak to me breath, through on the run EVERY SONG HERE is about uncontrolled substances.
speak to me breath - marihuana
on the run - heroin
great kick in the sky - lsd
time - you need time to buy the good stuff
money - you need a lot of money to buy the best stuff
any colour you like - lsd,amfetamine, crack-cocaine
us and them - dealers and junkies
brain damage - the result of all of the above substances
eclipse - a mind-altering state into the abyss.
i think this cd should be banned for children under 65.
Pink Floyd are contenders for worst band ever. This album provides plenty of evidence why they just might be the worst music makers of all time. Not one good song here.
This was for the Wall
If Pink Floyd are so great, then why haven't they done a new album in 11 years? Britney has been collecting awards, making headlines, and selling records consistently since 1999. Pink Floyd have done absolutely NOTHING within that time frame. Nothing. No awards, no sales. Nada. I mean, you really have to skip this album. It is, by all accounts, terrible.
As long as there are unintelligent people who feel deprived there is a feeding ground for utterly nonsensical and childish cds like the wall.The first time I heard this horrendously bad CD I was amazed at the level (or: lack of level) of awareness and adulthood these musicians lacked. It is obvious they have chosen to stay as 'babes in the wood', hitting out to the world and yelling for attention for their inconsistent dreams. Oh my, this Cd is really really bad. Where shall I begin? Let us say what I have already indicated. This group sounds like a bunch of brats all yelling out 'Look at us we're hurt and betrayed'. (To THINKING man and beast the joke is clear: yes they were hurt and betrayed and THEY THEMSELVES were the ones who did it, don't whine and whimper no more, sissy girls!)The music(if that is what you should choose to call it)is completely dull and TASTELESS.examples? Take Comfortabilly numb and Mother. These must be in the top two of atrocious songs ever recorded on the face of this earth. Dumb lyrics and repetative themes, clearly a case of aspergers' disease.Also Hey You and the Brick trilogy (what is the use, version one is bad and so are two and three, thanks band for your kindness)are not exactly tunes I would dye for, not in the least bit, you know.To cut a long story short this is a bad album without either memorable songs or performances.OK I know all rock music is named 'the noise of the depraved', but this lousy CD is clearly the worst.
you've been told.
Animals: Dogs or Sheep, who ever claims one I'll take the other, but I don't mind doing both :-)
Haven't heard any other albums...
Woah, woah, fellas.
By the time we're done with WYWH we'll probably forget about your dibs and we dont' want to have to look back.
The Wall is far too long though.
And Animals makes more sense if people have read the George Orwell book "Animal Farm" because that's what the album is based on (I think..)
So let's just stick with what we have.
BigTrav415
Yeah, Animals is somewhat based on Animal Farm (great book btw), but, as someone informed me when I posted this earlier, Animal Farm is a criticism of communism, Animals is a criticsm of capitalism.
Sorry about the dibs, I just wanted to be sure I could write something...
Animal Farm is an awesome book. It's one of my favorite books of all time, actually. George Orwell is probably my favorite author.
I feel that we don't really have to do "The Wall" since there is already a MASSIVE and brilliant (IMO) analysis on The Wall and the movie that came with it.
Alrighty then. Dual analyses will be fine. So TheDMV and I can both do WYWH, etc.
It's fine doing SOYCD together, since it basically is a split song. You may want to analyse the musical content of all 9 parts, so it may be a big job. If you'd like, I can write down the times all 9 parts start...
And thankyou to MYR and Lunch. Guys, I won't be on regularly till Uni ends, so thanks for keeping everyone in line.
Once all of DSOTM is done, then you can go ahead and nominate the next album, and when the first WYWH analysis is in, you can start picking songs.
Musical content? Then it's going to be harder than what I expected. But, I'll try, unless someone else would like to have a go at it. And please, write down the times of the 9 parts, as much as I love the song, I really don't know that elitist division of the song.
Med57, nice. It was the best one yet (better then mine) but the one thing I want to know is about how it fits into the album as a whole. What does it contribute to Dark Side?
EDIT: and to the guy who posted the '77 montreal animals concert, that stuff is gold. I know a guy who was at that concert (and is also an amazingly good guitarist) and he told me that it was a terrible concert and no one was listening to the music, just screaming. And racing around to come up behind you again
