OBC or Saucerful of Secrets for most underrated album. Any Colour You Like for underrated song.
I never really saw Have A Cigar as underrated, just brilliant. It never occured to me that other people might not recognize this.

I know I go out on a limb when I say that but nothing has quite touched me like PATGOD. I think the songwriting is way more creative, influncial and so trippy and psychedelic than ANY of their post Syd matrial.

123 to what Gilmour said. PATGOD is one crazy album, and probably their most psychadelic release, but after the untimely demise of Barret from Pink Floyd, their music took on a much deeper meaning. If Syd had stayed in the band, I doubt they could have made such an impact on the music industry.

So you say that Waters can never touch Syd and his influence? I say Roger has had a gigantic influence on rock. Even though he wasnt the first to make concept albums, he mastered the process of it. DSotM and The Wall are both very influential albums. Many modern artists have used those albums as inspiration for their own music. Lyrically, Animals is brilliant, and Roger's most creative. Waters takes George Orwell's story of a communist society and applies it to music.
I dont see how you can say Syd has had a bigger influence than Roger. Maybe in the 60's/70's psychedelic scene, but not today, save a few cult fans.

I like PATGOD, but I think Syd is becoming somewhat overrated. He was a great songwriter, but Pink Floyd really took shape when they got Gilmour playing better guitar parts than Syd ever could. We can't do anything but speculate on what would have happened to the band had Syd stayed with them, but I think it's quite possible they would have died out along with loads of other late 60's psychedelic bands.

I guess everything just works out for the best. Dave is obviously a better guitarist than Syd. Imagine Syd playing the solo to Echoes or even to something like Comfortably Numb. It just wouldn't be the same.

I agree but, I think had Syd been with Pink Floyd as long as Waters, then Syd would of had a bigger influence than Waters does. Syd just had a more distinct sound even though he wasn't as talented as a songwriter.

To tell you the truth, I think Pink Floyd probably would have reached their full potential if Syd stuck around. Gilmour could still play guitar, but having Waters, Barret and Gilmour all contributing to songwriting would have made their songs even better.
They may not have been as commercially successful if Barret had stuck around, because he was always just a little too crazy for mainstream music. But I think I would enjoy the band even more (maybe the majority of the world wouldn't though).

Dave is better, but I think Syd is more creative.
Lets not get into the whole "what if Syd didn't go crazy" thing. Its so hard to say what would happen, and predictions just lead us to missing Syd more or wishing it was Gilmour from the begining, and nobody comes out happy.

If you liked it you should cheak out his cd Barrett. In my opinion it is better the Madcap. Or you could just get his newly relased greatest hits titled "wouldn't you miss me." I mean its a good complitation because you can fit most of Syd's solo work on one cd, and it has a few unrealsed tracks.

I like Syd's lyrics better because they have so many different meanings to me. While Waters lyrics are great, and I identify with them, I find that I identify with Syd's lyrics much more and one song can be identified with at more then one time in my life. Though one thing that is missing from Syds lyrics is the concept album. Waters wrote brillent concept albums, and so really you are comparing the styles of two different poets when you compare Syd and Waters. You are also comparing the styles of two different guitar players when you compare Syd to Gilmour. Syd was amazing at writting rythem, and his song show it. I like his rytheme riffs MUCH more then Gilmours. Though Gilmour's strenght came in leads, so he is technically better. Syd wrote some great leads, but not as great, or as many as Gilmour. So to compare the song writing and guitar writing to the other members is like comparing Apples and Orenges (waits to see if anybody catches the reference)

I don't even know where to begin with Pink Floyd. I have collected most of their albums. I think that nobody's home is a sort of eerie song in a way. It makes me depressed sometimes. Has anyone in here done the Wizard of Oz / Dark Side of the Moon thing? well if you havn't you should, after the Lion roars the second time on the wizard of oz you play dark side of the moon. you will flip out. it's so sweet especially when you're stoned

Ummagumma is both a live album and original. Its a two disk set, one studio, one live. The studio isn't talked about very often because its not that great.

Ummagumma on tape is a solid studio album. I'm not sure, but I think when they transferred it to digital, they really shitted up the entire album. The tape version is extremely well done, with a real warmth and texture.

Well, I can't say that tape is better, since I haven't heard it, but I still love Ummagumma. It's very interesting, very avant-garde (I think that's how you spell it) and really showed some progression. Not their best work, but maybe their more interesting one, from a musical standpoint...

I just got Animals today, completing my progressive-era Floyd collection (DSotM-Wall)
One thing I've definitely noticed about Floyd albums is that the more you listen to them, the better they get. This is the opposite of what happens with other bands. The first time I listened to it today, I liked it, but I wasn't really getting into it. Now its like my fourth time, and I'm completely entranced. It's weird. The exact same thing happened to me with WYWH and The Wall (I got into DSotM from the start :thumb:) It's not that I don't like them the first time through, they just seem better after a few times through.
Anyway, I think the beginning of Dogs has got the most awesome rythym of any Floyd song at least, possibly any song I've ever heard. I think all the songs are great though. I understand the whole album is an Orwellian analogy of animals to humans, which is part the reason why I like it (Animal Farm kicked ***, great read for anybody) Just my two cents.

Sub genres are good for when your trying to be as specific when talking about a band as possible for like when you want to get techencal, but when it comes down to it, rock is rock. Does it really matter if Pink Floyd was Prog rock, art rock, or any other thing they could be classified as? Does it change their sound if we lable them a certain way?

Progressive rock is very hard to define though, because it must move, or progress, through diffrent movements. Look at Yes, they are no doubt prog masters, yet they had songs that might not fall under the category of prog, but since they had many others that were progressive, it was still prog rock. I think art rock is more used for prog-style music, that doesn't quite follow or progress like most prog. That's just me though.

Yeah thats a good point, since thats the case I'll throw my two cents in.
I think that art rock is defenetly a sub genre of rock, and many Pink Floyd songs are examples of why its a sub genre. A lot of what Pink Floyd does is art for the sake of art, whitch is what my defenition is of art rock. Examples of this are Careful With That Axe Eugene, a lot of the stuff Syd did, and the more "out there" parts of the Wall.
Other art rock bands are bands like the Beatles because of things like Revolution 9, or Jimi Hendrix because of the Star Spangled Banner (pure art in my opinion)

Talking about art rock yet no mention of King Crimson. I don't know much about them, but I think they like invented art/prog rock.
Progressive Metal
You may have heard of this as “Intelligent Music For Intelligent People”. Whether you agree of disagree, most prog metal is made by intelligent people, although it’s fanbase may vary in IQ.
This genre is probably the most often falsely attributed genre. However, it is also very difficult to define “prog”. Basically, the rule-of-thumb is that the music progresses. Riffs are generally used a few times, then discarded, in favour of another melody (except for when a main riff is brought back to keep the song cohesive). Drumming tends to be extremely varied and technical, and the music is played at varying tempos and time signatures. This genre features more keyboard and synth then any other Metal genre. Strange instruments also make appearances here. The vocals span a wide range of styles, however the lyrics almost always tell some kind of story, often being expanded into a concept album. Songs are also invariably around 8 mins and over, and feature several solos by every band member. Technicality of musicianship is a hallmark, but not exclusive to this genre.
Please note: A concept album does not a prog band make.
Sort similar to Rock. I'm writing the proper definition for prog rock right now, actually.

Yeah I like a lot of the takes the guitarist does on the songs on the album. I always felt the sign of a good guitarist was not only to write good songs, but how they improv on others.
And again as for the whole "what genre is Floyd" don't try to find one, because at some point or another they have preformed almost every genre, to lable them a certian genre is like calling the Beatles a pop band.

Well I feel that he did a good enough job at recapturing Gilmour's sound, with out sounding like a Gilmour imitation. I do miss Gilmour don't get me wrong, Comfortably Numb off Pulse is a god compared to Comfortably Numb on In The Flesh. Rogers usually has a few different "voices" he can do. Gilmour has a more constant singing voice. Sometime's Rogers has like a desperate sounding yell, sometimes more of a talk/whisper, or sometimes just his 'normal' singing voice.

Adding on to my comment on the oooh's and ahh's in the solo, if you listen carefully the way the guitar build up sounds like someone is inhaling, and then Gilmour just kind of plays this soft relaxing lick at on the aahs like someone is exhaling (Breathe??)
Listen to the solo, you'll get what I'm talking about.
Specifically at 4:28 in the song.
But...
album: Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall
I can't I have a TRUE favorite Pink Floyd song, as it keeps on switching, but just listening to the whole albums is what I do.
Has anyone heard any instrumental versions of the songs?

Go here and check out Orchestral Maneuvers.
It's a really good streaming site, like XSAO, someone posted it in the CR thread a while back.
I really like how they did the Another Brick in the Wall 1, Happiest Years of Our Lives, Another Brick in the Wall Part 2.
Hell, it's better than Korn's cover :)
Also, listen to Wish You Were Here on that album.
It's fantastic, I swear to God, I want to buy it.

PS: Malcolm and I have basically the same avatar, the only difference is the band. =P

How many people get chills when they listen to The Wall?
Me too. In fact, I was just talking to another guy about Shine on You Crazy Diamond in the Audio Arena forum, about how sometimes you just kind of shiver. Here's my post:
Yeah, I agree with Shine on You Crazy Diamond. If you want to feel one of the weirdest sensations you've ever felt, get in bed, turn all the lights and sound off, put on headphones, and play SoYCD at full volume. The whole thing is awesome, but when it gets to the part when the music has almost completely faded out, and all of a sudden Gilmour plays the Syd theme (the four-note riff), you get goosebumps and just lose your breath. It's crazy. Also, when he's played it like three times, and then plays it again like two beats before the other times and the drums start to lead up to the "rock-and-roll" part of the song, you can hear a guy breathing hard like he's running. That is one awesome song.
Oh, and more on topic, I was sitting in Ruby Tuesday and it was real loud and you couldn't hear the music, but then I heard this "aaahhhhhh" and then "is there anybody OUT THERE" That was the first time I'd heard it on the radio. I was just sitting there with like half a rack of ribs left on my plate straining my ears to listen, and every once in a while I'd pick out a beautiful acoustic ote in the aforementioned riff. The weirdest thing was that I wa ssort of playing the song in my head, and all the notes I heard matched up perfectly. i guess that's what happens when you listen to The Wall as you sleep; it gets burnt into your brain permenantly.

btw am I the only one who is scared sh1tless by Echoes? It's ****ing creepy as hell, especially that last noise, it sounds like a bunch of ghostly moans ascending in a ghost elevator or something... scary stuff...
Well, legend has it that Floyd were approached to do the final 11 minute sequence of 2001: A Space Oddessy. They declined, but when they saw how good it was, they decided to do the sequence themselves. Hence the beeping at the start, etc.

I heard that the "beeping" was accidental. Apparently wright (I think hes the keyboard player, i never remember) just pushed one key for the sake of it and they all stopped and wrote a song after that.

I love echoes, the buildup is just fantastic.
Fave album has to be wish you were here though, every song is fantastic. It has special meaning to me too, the first floyd song I ever heard was wish you were here on my dads old vinyl of the album. I loved it. I've got all my dads old vinyls now, and he has a DSOTM '73 vinyl in very good condition, any ideas how much it's worth (I'd never sell it). Also, WYWH, Animals and Meddle all on vinyl.

If you're talking about Echoes.. the beginning sound. The 'ding'. It was a keyboard played through a Hammond Leslie speker.. which gave it the circling effect. (It sounds like it circles around you.. or something like that :P)
Anyway, favorite song would have to be Shine On You Crazy Diamond (1-5)
As for album, probally The Division Bell.. Even though some consider that to not be Pink Floyd at all.. I love it. Very relaxing album.

the "ping" sound was not accidental. The sound (as someone else said) was a hammond organ through a leslie rotating speaker. But, Leslie Rotating speakers are not designed to connect to hammond organs, so Rick had to order custom made cables to connect them to get that "ping" sound.

Ony when I listen to it all the way through. I love how it all raps on with Outside the Wall. I love how the first 11 seconds of In The Flesh reflects the end of the album. Just the way it all comes together like that gives me chills.

I've come to realize a very scary thing. I don't think I could get through a day without listening to some Floyd. One time I woke up in the middle of the night and was just craving to listen to SOYCD, but I realized WYWH was at my dad's house. I just laid there for like 10 minutes with my eyes wide open and I couldn't get to sleep. Finally I got on my computer and listened to it there (whole thing) then went back to bed and fell asleep right when my head hit the pillow.
It's like a drug. I've listened to them so much I thinnk it's burnt into my memory, because I can rememebr every note, evry rythym, every word, everything about every Floyd song I've heard. It's weird as hell when you hear it on the radio and if you sing along your voice syncs perfectly with Waters' or Gilmour's. Anyone else like that?

Damn, that happened to me with SOYCD (it seems that song has many different stories) and it began "Remember when you were young..." and I did it the same time, with the same tone as Roger, it felt as though I was singing through my cars speaker, it was amazing, but when it came to the chorus part, my voice couldn't match the tone since there are more than one people singing on that one.
I don't know why, but that reminded me of a story that I heard about when Pink Floyd recorded the song. As everyone knows Syd happened to drop by the session. Roger was doing the vocals, and after finishing, he turned to Syd and asked him what he thought about the song. Syd told him that it sounded "old."

I don't care how "overrated" DSotM might be, but I usually can't go a week without finding myself listening to it... I usually just listen to it from start to finish but often skip Money, don't get me wrong, Money is a great song, but I don't like where it is on this album for some reason. Dark Side is good for this because it flows so well and we all know songs like Time or Brain Damage have those certain parts that just pop into all of our heads at one time or another. It's stuck in your head after you hear it for the first time... well it sure was for me which is why I am still constantly listening to it 4 years later.

Yes, sort of. It's great becasue you can't be traced on it, and it's really good for getting things. It's kind of hard to explain, it's not really a prog you search on, you click links on website that connect you to a single server, and you download the files off of other people who are downloading at the same time.

I had another one of those "holy ****" moments last night. It was like 1:30 AM and I couldn't sleep, so I was listening to The Wall disc 2. Understand I've heard this album at least 20 times all the way through by now (no exaggeration). Anyway, Nobody Home came on, which is one of my favorite songs ever. If you listen, throughout most of the first half of the album a TV is playing in the background (you understand if you've seen the movie) Then near the end of the song, after he sings "oooooooh, baby, when I pick up the phone" and before he sings "there'll be nobody home", I could hear a guy on the TV saying "SUSPRISE, SUSPRISE SUSPRISE!" I'd never heard it before, but it was amazingly clear and I couldn't believe I had mised it all those times. It made my heart skip a beat just hearing that guy's voice out of nowhere. I think that is truly the greatest thing about Pink Floyd; the more times you've heard it, the better.

You know that there is a hidden message... In Empty Spaces if you play it backwards it says "you have found the secret message." LINK: http://www3.telus.net/jefmil/stairwaybackwards.htm
And check out the slim shady one. Its the only other one that might be intentional

I read about that a few years ago...some New York City DJ found it out 1 or 2 years after the album was released and played it on the radio. I tried it myself, and it was intentionally put in there...pretty interesting if anybody cares to do it (soundrecorder works fine too, comes with about all Windows computers).
Somethin about 'congratulations, you found the secret message...the funny farm...' and some other junk. Its hard to hear over the backround noise though.

yeah, I remember doing that on my computer with Sound Recorder, I played The Wall with iTunes (no I dont have an iPod, but iTunes is good as a music player), and as it played through the speaker, i put a mic in front of the speaker and recorded it with Windows ****ing Sound Recorder, then played it backwards. I'm so ****ing ghetto when it comes to hardware for my computer
Anyone that hasn't done it should, i won't give it away
(btw, you can hear it end right before he starts actually singing, so if you play it backwards it will start after he stops singing)
EDIT: By the way, it took them that long to find it (1-2 years)? When i first heard the song I could tell someone was saying something backwards, I just was too lazy to check for a while.

Well, in 1979, it wasn't so clear. I mean, now we have the technology to easily reverse a recording, so we recognize the sound of backwards vocals. Back then, I would imagine it wasn't easy to reverse, so the backwards singing would just sound like jibberish until someone reversed it.

The last time I was listening to The Wall in the dark when I was falling asleep, I heard the heavy breathing on "Don't Leave Me Now" and it freaked me out. I thought there was somebody in the room or something.
I like stuff like that :p

Is There Anybody Out There can be quite scary under similar circumstances.

There is a backwords message on the Empty Spaces it says "Welcome you have found the backwords message on the Wall...." or somthing like that.
