Anyone know any Alk3 songs with Glenn Porter on drums?

I know he was in the original line-up, but i'm not sure how long he was there before being replaced with Derek.

I know he was in the original line-up, but i'm not sure how long he was there before being replaced with Derek.

anything from the CDs "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" "Goddamnit" and "S/T" the self titled has a cassette tape on the cover...then "From Here To Infirmary" had Mike Felumlee of the Smoking Popes on drums...then he left and they got several guys to play with them live...i think Atom Willard from The Offspring played with them for a little bit, but never recorded with them...then they did "Good Mourning" and "Crimson" along with i think both the splits with Derek Grant and they've had him since then...

Glenn's style is more raw sounding to me...he's really quick and amazingly talented, but nothing is really consistant on drums...he probably just wrote by ear rather than actually writting his stuff down and improvised a bit during recording...Felumlee and Grant are more structured drummers i guess is the best way to put it...they have a consistant beat and the only improvisation is maybe in the fills...they easily could have written those too though

as far as i know, nobody knows what happened to Glenn after he left the trio...and i personally dont know where he came from either...which is surprising cause he's a beast on drums

I strongly suggest Clavicle and My little needle, though.

Oh and Radio, You've got so far to go, and Sleepyhead.

definately get Clavicle, My Little Needle, Nose Over Tail, '97, Cringe, Cop, Cooking Wine, Exploding Boy (best cover i've ever heard alk3 do), Sundials, Maybe I'll Catch Fire (the song)....and really anything from any of the 3 cds...just look up the discography and get random songs from each cd...and if u like them, buy the cds to support the worlds most amazing band

and anything alk3 is fun on drums...and what i can play on bass is fun...alk3 used to be all i played on bass and radio is one of the only 2 songs i can play on guitar...the other is redemption song by bob

Exploding Boy (best cover i've ever heard alk3 do)

Have you heard "The Metro", originally by Berlin? I think thats their best cover ever. The bassline replaces the keyboard part perfectly.

@ Radish Boy - Yup, I used to play bass and sing in a band, but I couldn't get over stage fright, and my lyrics were sucky. Now I play straight out bass, and I'm much happier that way.

radio is overplayed and all, but i still love it...weird...and its the only song i can play all the way through on guitar right now...when i master bass i'll learn guitar...and keys at the same time!

i'm getting a keyboard for christmas, so if i ever learn how to play time to waste i might do an all keys/vocals version of it...if i get it recorded decently i'll post it

I'm learning it off of Powertabs, but since its tabbed out for guitar, I have to keep transposing it down an octave. It get's annoying.

Chilly-Bean-Bop
12-10-2005, 10:10 PM
If it does it like that, then what you should do is write all the note names down, then play it on a piano. It'd be easier to find the right octave.

Hrm, maybe I'll try that.

haha being a drummer my HANDs work independently...but my fingers...not so much...my friend zac who can play time to waste is going to teach me when i get my keyboard or if i go to his house before christmas i guess he'll teach me then...sounds hard as crap to me, but it'd be fun to learn...

i got the crimson delux edition cd...i converted my mom into an alk3 fan with it...she wants me to burn her a copy of it...i dont know why some people didnt like it? i thought it was amazing...did the keys sound darker or heavier or whatever? or is it just me?

but yeah i've converted like 6 people into alk3 fans...both my parents (my mom with crimson delux edition, even though i got crimson like the day it came out and my dad when i went to see them and i had an extra ticket because my brother had one but got kicked out of the house...i had 2 extras and could only find one kid who had heard them that was in town at the time, so my dad used the other ticket and loved the show), my best friend and her little sister...she went out of town to visit family and bought crimson on the way and told me it was the best cd she had ever bought...and a kid in my neighborhood and this girl who used to obsess over like 6 guys including me last school year...im proud of myself

yeah i bought it like 3 days ago...still havent started reading it, because im in English this semester at school and am already reading 2 books at the same time and have projects to do for them...i'm gonna start reading it soon though

but my english teacher from last year told me that he saw the film, and it was realllllllllly dull and he heard the book was much better...i dont know how anything on charlie manson can be dull? strange...

HitHardDrums55
12-15-2005, 06:20 PM
i havent started it yet, but its about Charles Manson and the Family murders...if you dont know the Family is Charlie's following...hes in his like 60's now or somethin...but heres some stuff i know about him

he constantly did LSD with The Family (who was almost all girls, one guy other than himself) and he had sex with all of the girls and they listened to the Beatles' white album constantly...helter skelter was named after the beatles song...he thought the beatles were angels sending him messages through his music...he thought that he was Jesus and Satan...his goal was to kill all the white people basically and take control over all the black people...because there was a race war at the time and the blacks wanted power over the whites (this was back in the 60s) so he was "helping" them but he thought they were too stupid to run things themselves and he would take over...

this is where it ties in with Alkaline Trio....Sadie Mae (i forget her last name but it started with a G, the song Sadie was named after her basically) killed someone...i think it was an actress...and the victim happened to be pregnant so she cut the woman open, tasted her blood and thought that charlie would love it if she cut the baby out, wrapped it in a towel and brought it to him, so she did that...and what i read never said anything about if she actually did this or not, but she considered eating the heart...

theyre all in prison and none of them got the death penalty, but i know at least charlie was on death row im sure the others were as well, but they got off and have life in prison...they keep sending charlie back and forth between a mental facility and prison...he can act crazy in prison and totally sane in the mental facility so it confuses them...its all in California though...thats all i can think of right now but i cant wait to start the book

Oz Rembrandt
12-15-2005, 06:22 PM
Ok, ok!

I do Criminal Psychology, I didnt need the Manson story, its pretty well known to me.

You speak LIES. She didn't cut the baby out.
And I quote: "She had wanted to cut out the baby, Susan said, but there hadn't been time. They had wanted to take out the eyes of the people and squash them against the walls, and cut off their fingers"

Sadie also said that she held Sharon Tate's arms above her and she was begging for her not to kill her and let her have her baby, but Sadie just said to her "Look, bitch. I don't care about you. I don't care if you're going to have a baby. You had better be ready. You're going to die, and I don't feel anything about it."

Plus all the girls that Vincent Bugliosi and the LAPD interviewed pretty much said the same thing, about helter skelter - basically that they were the chosen few, who would go out at random and execute people to release them from the world. They thought they were a new race, like an elite of people who were chosen to completely love and yet at the same time destroy innocent people.

If you get what I mean. That's the long and the short of it. It's a confusing book.

EDIT: On the last part of what you said, that man in Germany killed this other bloke and ate his pen0r.

He's got a really deep singing voice. On Mercy Me he's singing like an octave lower than Matt.

When does Derek sing?

Chilly-Bean-Bop
12-21-2005, 01:48 PM
Mercy Me. Does he sing backing vocals in This Could Be Love? I'm pretty sure that thats him. On some of the music videos, he sings a little backup in The Poison. And I think that he sings a little bit on Queen of Pain.

Why Burn? I don't like Burn all that much. I mean, it's okay, but i'd rather prefer Prevent This Tragedy or something along the lines of that to be a single.

HitHardDrums55
12-21-2005, 05:23 PM
i think burn is cool...its really different sounding, they did a great job with it in my opinion...its also a fun drum song...a lot more complex than it sounds, but still not too hard

1. Derek's voice
1. Dan's voice
1. Matt's voice

Corrected for accuracy. I have no problems with any of their voices, and frankly the band are at their most amazing when all three of them sing together.

But even if we take it at the two main singers, I'd still put them both equal. I mean, if you listed amazing Alk3 songs that Dan sings on, and the same for Matt, I think you'd come up with about the same number. They both rock, in other words.

HitHardDrums55
12-21-2005, 07:31 PM
yeah im shocked they havent done a video for sadie yet...apparently matt loves the song cause i know he said the version on the one man army split was basically just a demo for the new album and theyre glad they put it on there...

Don't they all sing in the chorus on Emma? I know that Matt and Dan do, but I watched an acoustic version, and I think that all of them sang.

billiejoe84
12-21-2005, 08:44 PM
No idea. I haven't seen many Alk3 vids (the one I have is Radio live at the Warped tour... give me your email if you want it... it is ace). Upon listening to Emma just now, I can hear 3 voices in the chorus: Dan's main vocal, Matt singing a 5th above, and another voice singing about an octave below, which I presume is Derek.

Also, speaking of that album, I never realised until recently the song 'Donner Party (All Night)' is about an actual historic event. How morbidly fascinating.

HitHardDrums55
12-21-2005, 09:03 PM

Chilly-Bean-Bop

Yeah, Donner Party was some indians or whatever traveling and then they died from some big tragedy...can't remember what it was.

The Donner party was some explorer guys in California and got lost in the mountains... and ended up having to eat each other to stay alive. There are some lyrical references to this in the song (...final resting place in pieces...).

This is all true. I worked out from the reference to the Donner Party in the Shining...

@ HardHitDrums - There IS a video for Sadie... Blood Pact exclusive though...

and yeah, I agree James, all they're voices are perfect, especially together. Dan sings the love songs most, Matt the darker stuff (usually). One time you can hear Derek "sing" is during the break in Donner Party - You hear him breathing into the mic.

I'm not quite sure what the song 5-3-10-4 is about, but I know the title comes from Matt and Glenn's days as bike Curriors, where it was radio short term for smoking weed after a shift (5-3) and the last part is the end of a transmission (10-4).

I don't really, but I wish I did... lol

just so you know, Good ****ing Bye isn't actually Alkaline Trio, but rather a Matt Skiba solo song on his split with Kevin Seconds...

I like Good ****ing Bye. And that's Chainsaw, not Chaindaw.

I prefer Dan's Solo stuff from his split with Mike Felemulee to Matts. Matts stuff is great, but I dont much like Kevin Seconds.

chumpradio
12-31-2005, 09:51 AM
I don't like Kevin Second's half at all, but Matt's is great.
Dan's is also great, and Mike Felumlee's is okay, but nothing amazing in my opinion.

Oz, how did you like those acoustics? I have the whole show if you want it, but I'd have thought you'd have it, because it was a bloodpact exclusive that I got my hands on.
It's the same show as the Sadie acoustic on the deluxe Crimson.

I found it after you sent me it... damnit...

They were awesome though, especially Hell Yes, its a top song.

Does anyone else think that the piano intro in "Time to Waste: is possibly the coolest one of all time? (But only if you dont iclude Journey : Don't Stop Believin')

HitHardDrums55

whenever i can get my friend zac over to my house he's teaching me time to waste...and i'm teaching him the demo version of your neck on keys...your neck is much easier than time to waste, but it still sounds cool

Chilly-Bean-Bop
12-31-2005, 06:02 PM
I love the demo version of Your Neck. I wonder why they didn't keep it. Piano makes it sound so much more beautiful. I haven't had time to figure out/search for tabs for Time to Waste. Well, I have, but I'm just too lazy.

HitHardDrums55

zac said it took him a few hours to learn, but he cant read sheet music anymore cause he hasnt had to since he was 7 or 8...he started keys when he was 7 and hes 16 now, so he's really good he learned it by ear and it's like perfect....i cant play your neck as fast as they play it, i always hit the wrong keys, but i havent started keyboard until this past christmas, so i guess even knowing the notes is a pretty good step for my lack of experience

Aye, it's very cool.
The demo version is too cheesy though, with the electric drums.

HitHardDrums55

i dont mind that, but the piano sounds too echoey and you cant really tell what it's playing...the actual cd version of that song is much better

I listened to Crimson for the first time in a few months the other day.

I don't see why people think it's crap, 'cause it's bloody brilliant.

Chilly-Bean-Bop
01-01-2006, 06:22 PM
People think its crap because either: they like their old sound and want them to go back to it, or, they got kinda mainstream with this album causing them to get tons of fanboys/fangirls and as Oz says, all those "emo" kids.

poprocks&coke
01-01-2006, 06:26 PM
This is true. But I saw more punks than emos at Bristol, even though there were lots of emos.

Chilly-Bean-Bop
01-01-2006, 06:27 PM
Its more the emos that piss me off. At one show, there were TONS of goths there and I was like "Holy ****." Amazed.

Emo girls think here boys.

Theres a thing ive found with pretty much every emo girl i know...

there all bisexual. Well not as such, but in clubs and stuf you see more girl on girl action then guy on girl.
