Led Zeppelin - In Through the Out Door (Jan. 1st, 1979)

Where to start with this review. This album is hated by a lot of Zeppelin fans, others just try to ignore it. Then, there are the few that like it. That includes me. This was Zeppelin's last studio album featuring new material (Coda was released after it, but it was left over songs from other albums). John Paul Jones had the most writing credit in this album than in any other of theirs. This is most definitely why so much of the album is focused on synthesizers. Well, let's get to the review:

1. In the Evening (6:51)
2. South Bound Suarez (4:14)
3. Fool in the Rain (6:12)
4. Hot Dog (3:17)
5. Carouselambra (10:34)
6. All My Love (5:56)
7. I'm Gonna' Crawl (5:30)

In the Evening

This was a song recorded during their album 'Presence', but was kept off. It sounds nothing like the rest of the album, but it is a good album opener. It starts off with synth and Plant saying 'In the Evening...", very much like the beginning to 'In the Light'. Then, it kicks in with a traditional Zeppelin guitar riff. During the verses, you can't really understand at all what the hell Plant is singing about, but it sure sounds cool. The bridge to the song is a bit of a slowdown and has a nice solo. Overall rating: 3.5/5

South Bound Suarez

This song starts off with some piano and then the drums kick in. It's quite a catchy song. Fine, it doesn't sound like the Zeppelin we are used to, but it's still a pretty good song. It's got a very dance-able beat to it, kind of like a shuffle almost. The solo in the song is traditional Page guitar playing. Overall: 3/5

Fool in the Rain

The most popular song off the record. This still gets played a lot on radio stations, but mostly pop ones. The song starts off with a catchy piano thingy and overall just sounds like a nice pop song. Especially Plant's singing. In my opinion, it reminds me of Billy Joel, but you know what? I'm a Billy Joel fan. At about 2:30 in the song, it breaks into a Latin-sounding piano/percussion song with Plant doing a little bit more pop singing in the background. The sound is something never before heard in a Zeppelin song. It's like a Samba beat that you'd hear at a Soccer game. It's quite a fitting way to change things up. After that, the song breaks back into the original piano part and then comes the solo. It's a nice little solo. Doesn't sound like a normal Page solo. It has some distortion fuzz on it. Some parts are pretty fast for Page actually. Overall: 4/5

Hot Dog

Arguably the worst song Led Zeppelin has ever written, but atleast it isn't too long, right? It has a very country-like sound to it. There's a lot of piano in it. Plant sings in a very country way too. The song is so god awful annoying that I always skip it when I listen to the cd. Overall: 1/5

Carouselambra

Zeppelin redeem themselves with this one. This interesting song starts off with a little synth then all the band members join in. The synth sounds awesome in this song though. It isn't happy like previous songs on the album. It's an angry synth. Plus, there's guitar backing it. It's pretty straight forward for a while, with Plant singing a lot of stuff that you can't understand, but it sounds very cool. The whole song has a good sound to it so far. The bridge starts at about 3:00. It features more synth and a guitar solo that sounds like it's backed up by a violin. At about the 4:00 mark, it leaves the synth and just becomes guitar. At about 4:20, the entire song just slows down and it's got a very nice slow/heavy sound to it. Plant finally gets back into the song. At about the 7:10 mark, the song speeds up again, but with a very strange sounding synth 'riff'. A guitar solo shows up after that and the song fades out. Overall: 4/5

All My Love

This is a slow and very catchy ballad written by Plant for his daughter who died at a very young age. The song packs a lot of emotion to it with very catchy string synths. A very traditional pop song. The bridge songs a bit more like Zeppelin. The solo is quite strange. It has a very classical music like sound to it. It's played with a trumpet, or atleast that's what it sounds like. It's quite catchy. There's a short little acoustic solo after that. Overall: 3.5/5

I'm Gonna' Crawl

It starts off with some string synth and then breaks into a slow blues sound. It's not exactly as slow as Since I've Been Loving You/Tea For One, but it's kinda' close. This is a bit more like the old school Zeppelin. Plant gives a very heartfelt performance into this song and the bass line is real catchy. There's a great part of the song where Plant yells out 'Every little bit! Every little bit!'. It reminds me a little of the Bolero influenced part of 'Achilles Last Stand'. The song finishes with Plant saying he's gonna' crawl and then all the intstruments just stop. A nice way to finish the album. Overall: 3.5/5

My overall rating of the album: 3.5/5

A pretty good album, but very underrated.

Nice review. My thoughts exactly on this album. Underrated, but not that great either.

This my least favorite Led Zeppelin album. I don't know it just seems to me like Physical Graffiti was their last great album. This, Presence, and Coda (If you count that as a studio album) really weren't that bad of albums overall but they just didn't live up to Zeppelin's earlier work.

i like this album, i think it's better than most people say.

and Hot Dog is actually my favourite song off of this album, along with Fool in the Rain. it's more of a fun album than their other more serious ones, that's why people don't really like it i think.

hmm, just wondering how you can call it classic rock, but i really like in the evening, that stratocaster riff...

the beginning part of 'in the evening' was done with page using a bow to the guitar, then the strat riff kicks in, cuz u can hear the vibrato arm go down.

a very underrated album indeed. although i disagree with two things. Carouselambra isnt like a angry kinda riff, but i suppose its how you look at it... and Hot Dog. that song should get more credit, its not THAT bad, i think that Hats Off To Roy Harper is thier worst song.

pretty good review, i think this is actualy a great album.
its the next cd im gonna buy :thumb:
