Let’s say I’m a crack head and the Elephant 6 label is my crack. In the case Of Montreal’s Satanic Panic in the Attic I’ve scored some of the best crack I’ve ever got next to Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System, and The Apples in Stereo. Seriously, I only got this album two days and it’s been in the CD player nonstop.

In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, Of Montreal is a poppy psychedelic band located in Athens, Georgia. This album was released this year (2004) and is their 7th studio release. To get an Idea of what they sound like play the MP3’s I have included at the bottom of this review.

In relation to other Of Montreal releases this one may be their most catchy. This is especially obvious with "Disconnect the Dots" with its handclaps and playful lyrics you could swear this was a song for Sesame Street. Now this could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you are. Under no conditions would I tell a metal head to listen to this band without knowing that they actually liked this type of Music. With that said, there are some rock moments in the record. The chorus for "Spike the Senses" sounds like a fuzz monster had decided to pay a visit during recording. Actually there are no slow songs on Satanic Panic in the Attic except the acoustic tune "City Bird".

The singing here is great and provide many of the albums best hooks in songs that have otherwise been mediocre. There’s no shortage of cool noises either which something I always love. Overall the structures and melodies are nicely constructed and flow right into each other without problem.

I love the lyrics and themes too. I never thought it was possible to make a song about kissing dead corpses so catchy and the lyrics from My British Tour Diary are great.

Satanic Panic in the Attic is quite a fun record. The cover art fits the mood perfectly. So if you are a fan of Neo- Psychedelia or traditional Psychedelia like The Beatles and The Beach Boys I would highly recommend this album

4.7/5 This is going to be one of my favorite albums of the year.

Nice comparison. I listened to those tracks and they're pretty, they've got that Beatles kinda vibe going on, but not too psychadelic. Anywho, good review, and you made me laugh.

Kevin Barnes is one of my favorite songwriters and this is such a great example of why. The album is probably about 90% him and him alone, a big shift from the band atmosphere of his past stuff. There's a lot of electronic tricks on this one was kind of surprising when I first heard it but this album has been one of the few this year that I continually go back to. It's not perfect and if you can't stand falsettos, synths and happiness, it's probably not worth a bother but it's really good stuff. I've heard that some copies come with a covers EP, but mine didn't :upset:. They've got 'em for download at their website though, The Shins, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, V Twin's and Broadcast. It's such a varied album, he's put together such an interesting mix. I love the riff off of "How Lester Lost His Wife." It's almost heavy, which is odd coming from a band who had an album named The Gay Parade. What I love most though, is Barne's lyricism, it's so atypical and just uniquely out there. Plus the artwork on the album is top, done by Barnes' brother David. Yar, diarrhea of the keyboard.
