I don't know if there are hostels in Philadelphia. You could stay in a really crappy motel or if it's nice enough, go for a park bench.

For UPS you gotta sign up here https://www.ups.com/one-to-one/register?sysid=myups&lang=en&langc=US&loc=en_US
Later it'll ask for some reg. number, I figured out later that you have to sign up for that too.
I've heard that there's a chance they'll call you but you can just BS the questions. I'm guessing they only do that in major cities 'cause they never called me.

When you get to the Supply list, go straight to the Internet ones. The rest are mostly garbage if I remember correctly.

Did some sick screenprinting today :)

First time I'd tried doing the photo-exposure thing I still can't remember what its called, but it worked a treat.

I didn't imagine for a second photocopying onto acetate would look so good either, thought it would magically go all lo-res.

Picking up my prints tomorrow cos they hadn't dried by the time I left.l

RIP Johnny.

Jon

Did more printing today, took photos, messed it up.

So I present the guide of how (not) to screenprint. I mean I only messed up the last layer so whatever.

1) Design your artwork. I prefer to do it in Illustrator or InDesign. And if you know what's good for you, use vector images. I like to design in colour (sorry no pic of what I designed, I might be able to get it tomorrow though). Then photocopy each layer onto an acetate.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0226.jpg

2) Coat your screen in emulsion. Didn't get a photo of this. Wait for it to dry sort of, then put it in your light source with the acetate over it. You get this sort of thing.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0219.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0220.jpg

3) mask off the corners of your screen (oops forgot to get a photo of that as well) - basically just cover the edges of the screen that you don't want to print on and aren't covered in emulsion with brown tape. You can see in images 219 and 220 what I mean - see the yellowy borders around the edge by the wood? those have to be sealed away.

4) Set up your table - put down a piece of paper/card (I like to use A3 or A2 paper or actually anything as long as ALL THE PIECES ARE THE SAME SIZE). You can see at the top of 220.jpg bits of masking tape on the table? Those were to show the edges of the card so each piece goes the same place. Also set down your first screen on top of your first piece of card once that's done and use masking tape to mark the edges of the screen on the table - makes for easy registration.

5) Mix yours inks up. I think its something like 60-40 medium-ink, but I'm not certain and I just get my teacher to do it for me at the moment. Also you can see a palette knife, for putting the ink onto the screen, and a squeegee.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0222.jpg

6) Make sure your screen and card are still lined up, have some extra card and your drying rack to hand. Dollop on your first lump of ink along one edge of the screen. Scrape it back and forth across the screen with the squeegee a few times - I was doing it 4-8 times yesterday and it worked perfectly. Carefully lift up your screen, get a friend to help you or just put a book or roll of tape under it to balance it, put your card out to dry, put a new piece of card in (remember your guides), and rinse and repeat.

7) You should get something like this. You can do as many layers you want, but for more layers I'd make more prints because like, each extra layer makes the chance of messing up registration greater. If you see what I mean. This is after the second layer. Obviously leave them to dry for a quite a while between layers.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0217.jpg

8) This was the first layer I did unsupervised - didn't realise about using a medium when I mixed, thus I messed up the screen, and the card stuck to the screen in part and generally messed up. Luckily I only messed up one yesterday, and this one today, so I have 8 more tries to get it perfect tomorrow :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0223.jpg

ALTERNATIVELY

obviously some of you won't have access to the emulsion and the lights and stuff, so changes:

1) Make stencils as normal either on news-print or acetate. Downside is its a lot, lots less durable (figure maybe 5 prints absolute maximum probably with the last few being trash), and you'll still have to do bridges. And cut it out by hand. Barely worth it.

2) tape your stencil to the bottom of your screen (wrap the ends of the stencil over the wooden bits in the screen and tape them down)

3) again mask off the edges with brown tape

The rest is just the same. I find it harder to register (although these was my first few prints so maybe i was just being bad), and you can't do complex designs: a) because the paper will tear eventually b) because its a pain to cut them out.

seriously, seriously go for it.

I can design anything (within reason) in InDesign/Illustrator, print a colour proof, print B&W separations, photocopy them to acetate, coat a screen, go for a cigarette & buy a drink - by the time I've come back its ready to print as many times as I can be bothered. I'd say you can go from nothing - printing in maybe 45 minutes, depending on how fast you work in Photoshop.

Whereas with stencilling you have to be so careful to design it so it won't fall apart, then it takes aaaaaages to cut it out, and then they always fall apart anyway.

I cut my own bangs...
Generally because there are always a few hairs that get caught up in my 'hawk, and the bangs are longer than the hawk itself.
But once it's up with the hairspray I don't feel like picking it apart, so I just cut the ends.
My bangs are all uneven and junk, but it looks intentional.

you need a light source and stuff as well.

also, you don't even need emulsion remover if you can't be bothered to wipe it off yet, or if you want to do a print a few times.

like if you had ink you could coat it up now, do some prints, and leave it till you get remover in 3 weeks or whatever.

I don't think that's true, since it's a chemical reaction that removes emulsion. I've waited months to reclaim screens with no problem, and pro shops often store burned screens in case they get a reorder. But they (& I) use pressure washers so they might not notice hardening over time or whatever.

You can discolor the threads by leaving ink and emulsion by leaving stuff on the screen for too long, but that doesn't affect future print quality.

I haven't done a whole lot of diy stuff for a while. I've been busy with preparing **** for the republican national convention, diy but not very crafty. what are pressure washers?

Under the 'Screen Clean-up' section in some Screen printing instructions I have it says: PHOTO EMULSION SHOULD BE WASHED OUT OF YOUR SCREEN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS YOUR PRINT IS COMPLETED - UNLESS YOU WANT A PERMANENT STENCIL. Maybe it's true or not, I'm not really sure. I know when I lift my screen up and look at it under a light I can see some left over emulsion in areas, like the corners. This is probably due to what I believe was poor washing. I'm not if that will affect anything though, and maybe like you said it just changed the colour of the threads...

In case you were wondering what it looks like when you spray something then go over it by hand in fabric paint with crappy watercolor brushes and use sharpie for the words the answer is not very good.

I had the miraculous brainwave the other day that even though I can't print shading, I can just half tone everything. so that's what I'm doing. the halftones are quite big (like 3mm diameter), but I reckon I could go much smaller than that (say 0.25mm)

How do I go about getting UPS stickers?

Do I order them in, or go to the postal office (just a desk at the drugstore here in town) and pick them up from there? Or another way I've overlooked.

Edit: nvm, I actually searched the thread and found out. But it says "Thank you for submitting your request. A UPS Customer Service representative will contact you to help open your UPS account."

I just spent £30 on screen printing stuff :(

I didn't realise my college print room was closed, thought it closed next week. Was planning to buy a screen at my leisure this weekend, expose it next week, and then whenever I have cash over the summer, buy ink & squeegee.

But like, its been closed for a week now, I had to beg the technician to open it for me tomorrow, and I had to rush around trying to find a screen, the only place local that had one was in a kit, so I've got a few kinds of inks, textile + normal medium, a squeegee, etc etc.

Eran - you know what we were saying about rinsing print credits at the end of the year? I actually can't do it. Taking so long. Printed about 800 flyers so far (thats what, 100 sheets of A3 and a few hours on the guillotine), still got like 500 print credits left :(. And I can't even rinse them on the colour printer, because its ****ing broken.

Patch them from the inside? Using glue? Any suggestions?

I've never had a pair of converse, so it's hard to compare, but for the most part I like them a lot. I feel like the canvas is a little thicker, but like I said I can't be sure. I think the rubber is different too - it seems to chip - but it doesn't bother me too much.

I had problems with them ripping where the canvas meets rubber, but that's because of the bad way I pull them off. I've got some punctures in the sole, but that;s because they're sneakers. I got mine around september and wear them everyday, and now that I've sewn them, about the earliest I can see replacing them is winter.

I've started moving away from stencilling lately and been making tons of wallets.

This looked easy enough, but after trying many many times today I'm finding out it's alot tougher than it seems.

I tried microwaving in pyrex, baking in ceramic, and frying in a frying pan.

The first 2 didn't work well at all, and frying it only resulted in a plate.

I'm thinking tomorrow I'll go out and buy a wok and try using that. Or I read on a forum that it might be possible to place them in a circle on foil and heat it up on a bbq, then when they're melting, press them into a big bowl.

Any suggestions?

In the microwave they started melting evenly all around (if I kept going it would have just been a plastic bowl)

They stuck to the bowl in the oven, but once it cools it comes off very easily.

And then I just made sure to grease the frying pan up to avoid sticking.

Tell me how it goes, man.

Edit: here's pics of my "plate". The only decent result I got from yesterday. Did this one in the frying pan.

Ok, I made a few of attempts trying to make a back patch the way I wanted, and me, being incredibly unartistic, botched and mangled it every time.

I'm just going to give in and buy a patch for some other band. What sites have decent back patches, besides Angry, Young, and Poor?

Alright, so I was a bit bored today (band members forgot we were supposed to get together, I had no other plans) and so I messed around with making bowls and other fun stuff out of vinyl records.

After getting bored with that I figured I could throw some army men into the mix and came up with a neat little clock (I had a little clock I bought the other day that I now have no use for).

Here is the result:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/mx_sic/WallClock003.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/mx_sic/WallClock004.jpg

A bit bubbly and such, not perfect by any means, but I think I like it more like that.

Super easy to make, too.

tnx.

I think I'll drop by the dollar store on my way to work tomorrow and pick up some other little toys I can try making it with.

I've gotta find a better way to get the toys to sink in without disfiguring the vinyl so badly.

It cost me like $3 to make it. I love cheap crafts that are actually usable.

.Instead of microwaving, find a way to heat it in just the spot where you want the toy to sink. A lighter probably wouldn't be strong enough, but I'm sure you can think of something.

I actually put it in the oven. Microwaving never works for me.

Thanks for the idea. Might have to give it a try. :)

One way I was thinking was to heat up the army men before-hand to where they're almost melting, then throw them on the vinyl and heat them together. Army men melt to vinyl, vinyl gets loose enough without burning to press army men into it a bit further.

Sounds good in theory.

May have to try it this weekend when I'm off work.

if you have a way to cut them in half reasonably well or sand them flat on a power sander, you could just glue them to the vinyl.

The main band I was searching for was Warzone, but I'm certain they didn't make any back patches, so I was hoping to find some fan-made ones somewhere, since I'm an idiot and can't make a simple stencil.

Warzone, Trial, Oi Polloi (I found a few of these on AYaP), On File, ****ed Up, Cro-Mags are some of the bands I'm keeping an eye out for. Meh, I'm just going to browse around until I find something I really like. I don't like these sites like angry young and poor and interpunk. I'd rather buy it directly from the band if I can, that's why I'm being picky. :p

Unless you're isolated, I recommend going to shows and buying back patches from the merch dudes. Other than that, I recommend going to punk stores. If it's really that hard to find, and you're really dying for a back patch, who cares how much you spend (within reason)?

Special Brew

I'm kind of isolated, especially since I'm out of a vehicle right now. :p

I hate buying stuff online, so I'm reluctant to bother buying patches unless they're from some of my favorite bands, and I might not be able to find them later. That money is better spent on albums or my car. I'd like to be able to make them instead, so I might just try that again.

Hey, never contributed to this thread as I don't know much/do much DIY stuff. I've followed a few posts and found them plenty interesting, Tinkered with stenciling and the like.

Just wondering if anyone here does any pinstriping, or has any info on pinstriping. For example brushes to use/make, paints, styles, tutorials of different methods. etc. I'm getting serious about a project car I'm looking forward to building in the very close future and wanted to try some striping out. I just need some info and heaps of practice.

I know it's not exactly on topic with Punk DIY, but any info or experience would help.

And, does anyone know a good way to shrink sweaters a bit?

I lost a bunch of weight after high school and one of my favorite hoodies is way too baggy on me now. I'm looking for a way to shrink it down a bit.

Tried washing in hot water/drying hot, and it worked a bit, but it's still a bit too big.

Any suggestions? Or is that as small as it's going to get?
