those are both nice, Kaisers Orchestra is a great abnd too. I was going to make a patch like that once but was struck by laziness.
Although I did make this:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a111/ratsinthecity/DIY%20Examples/101_0008.jpg

patch + jacket were made by me. The only thing I screwed up was the zipper, because when I zip it up people can see all the black on one side so there's a big stripe of black up the front, but it's not bad for a first effort and for how little I followed the directions.

that looks very warm
and the patch is good too

I like them. Where'd you get the directions?

it was at the fabric store - some pattern. the only important part is the pieces you cut out, the rest of the directions are more harm than good in my opinion.

The patch is silkscrened with photo emulsion stuff so thanks to all who said it was good. It better be, I ruined a screen for it.

I just cut up my New York Dolls shirt to fit on the back of my leather jacket, since there were holes developing on it that were getting annoying to fix up all the time. I was waiting for either that shirt or my Angelic Upstarts one to break down so I could use it, this won.

I'll post pics sometime tommorow/soon if your interested. (It's only safety pinned for now though, I don't feel like trying to sew through leather or glueing it on TBH.)

Thats awesome. Either of you mind if I do the same thing?

Oh, and pointless, do you mean that you cant get them through or the jacket is too thick for them to hold right? If they wont go through, common knowledge is that you could use a dart tip to make the hole. If its too thick....I dont know, but good luck.

Just wondering wot you guys think about a patch with a combination of the red-black flag and the american flag. It whould have a circled A in the blue part of it. The red whould be in the regular part of the flag. While the black would replace the red on the bottom diagonal.confusing?? wot do you think and how whould i go about making it.

reason i asked was because im thinkin about making a patch of it, and putting it on an army jacket. or something.

edit: On a 2nd note, to stencil words and other things like that could you just tape down the words then spray paint over that.

edit:sorry about the spelling, fixed it all(i think)

To make a patch, you'd probably want to spray paint it or use fabric paint, unless you have a sewing machine and a lot of free time.

If you were trying to imply that there were grammar or spelling errors in my post, you'd be incorrect.

Last night I got the sudden urge to attempt to make a stencil. I tried a Mischief Brew one and it didn't turn out to bad at all. I wanted to try putting it onto a shirt so I went to Michaels and they didn't have any normal white fabric paint in a spray can, so I just got a bottle of spray paint. When I sprayed it on an old shirt to see whether it worked, it was really pale and blurry. Is it because I need actual fabric paint, or is there some special trick to get it to work? Also, would it work to just use a small roller and paint it?

El Punko
03-16-2006, 07:36 PM
I use a small foam thing on a stick and acyllic paint mixed with fabric medium for my shirts. It seems to work quite well. Also, Ive noticed white on black generally needs more coats than black on white to look good. However, if it was pale and blurry that probably means you need some adhesive to get the stencil to stay down, because it sounds like youre getting underspray. I got some spray adhesive for like 3 bucks at home depot. You just spray a little on the back of the stencil first, but not too much, or your stencil might not be usable afterwards. Give it a shot. good luck.

Daniel!
03-16-2006, 08:14 PM
Thanks a lot. I'd also thought of using foam to dab on the paint, but I couldn't find any. I went ahead and used a roller to roll on some old fabric paint I found in my garage, and the shirt turned out pretty good. The stencil was all messed up from trying to use spraypaint, so I just threw it away. I'm going to go make a Specials stencil now and put it on another shirt. I'll post pics of both shirts later tonight.

El Punko
03-19-2006, 07:59 AM
Sticker graf is a lot of fun :)

As far as stenciling, dont try to cut with anything rather than an exacto knife or similar hobby knife-they are your friends. Pick up a can of spray adheseive for a few bucks, and make sure that when you put up your stencil you spray a bit of it on the back first (not much) This will help prevent nasty underspray. Dont rely on the adhesive to hold your stencil up though, use either your hand or tape. Cutting stencils is fun because it lets you get more personal than regular bombing. Oh, and dont make any Che Guevara stencils...

Oh, I forgot, stencils do not need a heavy coat of paint. If its a one layer stencil, you can be done in a few seconds. It may look like there isnt enough paint, but trust me, there is.

Good to see a 12 year old taking some initiative like that, though. I have a 14 year old friend that got half way through cutting a stencil and forgot about it. Now he wants me to make him shirts because he's too lazy.

And I have to sew patches onto another friend's pants/teach him how to sew. But hey, he's offering to pay me. I likely wont accept the money, because I do things for my friends out of the goodness of my heart.

No, the record was on my turntable and the knife only stuck into the front part of the jacket (it's one of those gatefold LPs with the lyrics on the inside). It didn't even make a very significant mark, it just kind of pissed me off because it was brand new.

I think I'll make a Bob Marley stencil, of him smoking a joint on the inside of the Burnin' album. I post the original pic and the stencil I make, if I can get it to turn out. I don't know what I'm going to paint it on, tho.

EDIT: Here's the photo I'm working off of, should be pretty easy, I'll just have to interconnect all the shading on his hair.

My patched jacket is starting to fall apart. There is a big hole in the lining, and I can put my hand under it between the outside fabirc and the lining. I should probably sew it up.

I haven't done DIY in so long, I should start. I bought this set of exacto knife blades from the 99 cent store and they are pretty cool.

Once it gets a bit warmer I'm going to spray paint the front of my backpack and stencil something on it.

I took my test spray to school and nobody could tell it was Marley. They couldn't even tell it was a person. :( Do you think I should get rid of the cheekbone?

Funny story, though, nobody could tell what it was, except this one stoner. He looked right at it and immediately said, "Yeah, it's Bob Marley smoking a jay."

I think I might make a back patch out of it. I just made it because I was bored but I really like it so now I have to think of something to do with it. I'm thinking of spraying it on some black fabric and sewing it to the back of my jacket.

By the way, does anybody know where to get a Minor Threat stencil of Ian MacKaye with his head down like on the album cover? I could have sworn I saw it on stencil punx but I checked again and it's not there.

When you wrap the tape around itself, sticky side out so that it essentially would make a "donut" like shape, but you would want it much thinner so that it could stay closer to the fabric.

I usually print it onto thick paper and cut it out from that. Transparency paper works well too.

ratsinthecity403
04-02-2006, 10:06 PM
yeah, I print it on thick cardstock type paper. If you're going to be making a shirt then use a thick paper and use double sided tape to stick the edges against the fabric to get cean lines.
If you're going to do silkscreening I like a glossy cheap photo paper type because the paint won't soak through.
If you want a vandalism on buildings type of stencil, what I'd do is either the method you mentioned or easier to just put lots of double stick tape down on the printer paper, stick it to cardboard and cut. As far as thin parts, do your best. If you ruin it take some tape and stick it back together and trim off the excess tape.

i know paper isn't very good for stencils cause the paper can bleed. but will thicker heavier stuff like drawing/art paper prevent this.

I find that photo paper (not really high quality, just low qulaity semi-gloss) prevents paints from soaking through and is easy to cut with an X-acto

Incubass's Op Ivy shirt looks great by the way

I picked up 2 new colours of spraypaint, time for some multi-tone stencils!!!

And here's what I've been doing with my week:

Minor Threat stencil, all cut out with white paper behind it:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/BPMead007/c216222e.jpg
Old shirt with test sprays on it:

Marley close-up:

Subhumans close-up

Bad Brains close-up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/BPMead007/9d9b9351.jpg

I'm almost done spraying with the Minor Threat stencil. Now I don't know what to spray these all on! I was thinking of making a jacket. I could either just spray those on there or make patches to put on it.

And does anybody know if it's okay to put spraypainted things in the washing machine?

you can but you will have to re-spray it if you dont want the faded look.

Hmmm well since the last time I posted in here I've made 2 patches for my bag (one Streetlight and a Radiohead bear) and a You Say Party! We Say Die! t-shirt, but the patches are very muddy after a bike ride and the t-shirt is out on the line, so I'll get some pics up by tonight I reckon.

I'm sorry, I suck at teh internetz, is that sarcasm? thanks, if it wasn't.

And yeah, I tried to spray Bad Brains on my shoes, but it didn't come out, so I sharpied in the logo over that big green mess and it looked pretty cool. I've got rasta colours on the toe and laces now as well.

Yeah, that's nice.

I punxed out my gym shirt with Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Subhumans, Marley stencils. I had to turn it inside out. Luckily, though, my teacher's pretty cool. As long as I paint over the pic of Marley smoking a joint I can still wear the shirt, so I'm doing the Operation Ivy stencil on stencilpunx.

i know this is dumb so sorry. but,
for the website " http://stencilpunx.mattrunningnaked.com/ " web site do you cut out the black or the white. or does it not matter. ive been looking at it for a really long time, and cant see how it is supposed to look when on it is on a shirt. and i didn't want to print it out, get all stenciled, and painted then relize i did it backwards.

Lukeh
04-07-2006, 02:59 PM
Cut out the black, otherwise it will all go horribly wrong - it's a useful thing to get used to with stencils otherwise as they get bigger you start making more and more mistakes.

Do you use spray-on fabric paint or liquid with a roller?

when useing fabric paint does it mess it up if you go over it in diffrent colors. like let a blue dry, then paint over that with a red. so are there any ill effects of doing something like that.

Flagjacket
04-08-2006, 08:47 AM
Why would you do that?

mullets suk
04-08-2006, 01:02 PM
Why would you do that?

i want to make an REM shirt, for the song "Radio Free Europe". To do this i want to have a pic of mainland Europe with a radio tower thing rising out of it. so i was thinking it would be easyer if i painted Europe first then the radio tower over that. thus i would need to paint over already painted area.

thats why im wondering if covering fabric paint with a diffrent color fabric paint will hurt the shirt/image.

Flagjacket
04-08-2006, 02:04 PM
Ah. Well, I'm sure if you let it dry then it'd be fine, but don't trust me.

crap, so i did the frount of the nimrods shirt like a few min. ago. well i spilt a little black cloth paint on it. to fix this i decided to draw a black line all the way around the bottom of the shirt. i did most of the frount, but it looks like crap.

i was wondering if bleach pens will be able to take out the black line. if not crap.

Ghostfire3
04-08-2006, 02:24 PM

mullets suk
04-08-2006, 02:43 PM
k, so heres the shirt. im still not done, and the line on the bottom is what i am trying to get rid of. This is my first DIY shirt ever so, it really suks. ill post pics of the finished shirt, when im completely done and the line is gone.(if worse comes to worse, ill take some white paint and re-color the line.)

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j73/h-drix/Nimrodsmess.jpg

i made the stencils myself, so the circled A is very uneven. I also did the stencils on paper so i cant redo the images on a diffrent shirt. :(

on the back (if the line comes out) it will say "THE NIMRODS"
