The Subhumans are a punk band, as is the Dead Kennedys. That doesn't mean I'm going to discuss DK in the Subhumans thread. The DIY thread is about DIY goods and services.
Yes, if you work for B&Q. Punk DIY is about not having to rely on the 'system' to provide you with goods. That's a political statement, I would think.

What's B&Q?
I never said DIY wasn't a political statement. I'm saying that this thread is not about political statements. If you want to post about stuff related to political activism then there's probably an appropriate thread somewhere.

So what's this thread about if not to help each other by sharing our DIY knowledge? Which you just admitted was (in this context) a political statement. B&Q are a British DIY chainstore, they sell saws, nails, wallpaper etc..

Sharing DIY knowledge would be like sharing tips on how to make patches or t-shirts and whatnot. I don't see how stealing in order to make a political statement has to do with how to make your own goods.
But whatever, arguing about this is defeating the purpose of eliminating spam.

This thread's main purpose was orginally for asking questions related to anything do it yourself, including but not limited to fashion, hairstyling, vandalism, and every day life stuff.
Now hairstyling has been eliminated, the others still are discussed. The main feature is still fashion and clothes, but questions about vandalism, stealing, and living your life the free way (freeganism has been brought up a couple of times) is not discourged nor off topic.

Pretty much. It's name is based off of veganism, because its a way of fighting the meat industry while still eating meat, because you arent supporting it with your dollars etc. But it goes beyond that. Google it.

carry a piece of blank cardboard on you (2feet by 2feet or so) and if a pig stops you and starts asking questions, say you're going on a mini-demonstration and it's going to be a placard.

Since we're on the topic of graffiti does anyone here actually do graffiti art/street art? I really want to become a street artist. I've been making designs but putting them on the streets isn't really going to be doable while I'm still living with my parents.

don't show anyone your designs. i have plenty of friends who are streetartists (a few of them are awesome hip-hop artists as well) anway, keep them between you and a close friend or two. Then, go around at night 11 or so wearing black hoodies and no other distinguishable characteristics (a mohawk showing or coloured hair for example). Wrapping a bandana around your mouth is also a good idea. It keeps the fumes from hurting you and makes you harder to be recognized. When its all done, ditch the cans by blowing them up or bring them back but if the fuzz has reason to believe its you and get your parents to agree to a search and they find the cans, your through.

Yeah I've only shown a couple of people my designs who I trust know how important it is that no one else knows about them. The one thing is that I would do stencils and the designs I want to do are life size so my parents would know that they're not for a t shirt. Though I suppose I can make them in secret and hide them until they're used. After spraying them I'd probably destroy them. Ideally I'd want to do them in the middle of the night and sneaking out of my house isn't really an option because my mom works at night and often stays up til 5. I think it will be easier when I can drive, it'll probably lessen my chance of being caught by cops and will better enable be to work outside my immediate community. Don't crap where you eat, y'know.
I'll probably end up waiting until I go to college to do a lot of work. Less complications to worry about.
Also a bandana protects from particles but not fumes/vapor. You need a respirator for that.

Me: I do DIY clothing stuff
Friend: DIY... doesn't that have something to do with drunk driving
Me: no, that's DUI or DWI.
Friend: are you sure? I guess that makes sense. What about like... driving under yak?
Me: um... that wouldn't make any sense. That's DUY. Driving intoxicated yak, perhaps?
Friend: now that's hardcore.
Ah, My friends...
Anyway, a little while back people were talking about DIY being a political statement. Sure, I guess I agree, but I myself never really did it for a political reason. I just like spending my time making my own clothing.

Lol, that would be hilarious. I was on the train back from Hammersmith today and I saw two blonde, blue-eyed possibly twins (they were very alike, but then again, all Aryans look the same to me:p) and they looked about the right age to be those two Prussian Blue white supremos. I wish they were, because then I would have claimed to be a big fan, taken a picture of them with me using my mobile, then I would have proceeded to chat them up. Imagine their frustration when they learned they'd had an incestual threesome with a Jew! Mhuahahahahahahahaha. And I would have also made a tape, of course. Can't have a threesome with nazi 14 year old aryan twins without making a tape.

That kind of reminds me of my town's local hotdog place (I know, not as cool as a music venue). It's all tagged had names scratched in the walls. Although I used to live in an appartment above this building, I have yet to write my name on it. Back before I was born, when my family was living upstairs, some artist was painting this old fashion coke a cola advertisement on the side, right where our window looked out from. When he was signing the names, he wrote my brother's name there too. It's still there, although the painting is peeling quite a bit, and some people graffitied on it a bit. His name is still intact.

I've got a few long sleeve shirts with sleves that are too short (I'm really tall and have broad shoulders, alot of long-sleved things don't fit well,) so I'm cutting and hemming them to short-sleeved length, painting some stuff on 'em, and using the leftover sleeves for patches. You'd probably have to make another stencil for the name, and I think you'd have to leave out the swirls on the bottom, but other than that, it's pretty much stencible already.

I'm not really sure how you did that, but it looks sweet.
A warning to all you taggers out there: If you're going to tag, make sure you have a good tag name, or this may happen to you.
One of my neighbors, who's this dumbass who thinks anarchy means ****ing **** up for the sake of it. Basically, he decided that he was going to be hardcore, and made up what he thought was a great tag name. I've only seen one of his tags, and it was located behind a bookstore in our neighborhood. This is his tag:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/asdf23/buddah.jpg
Buddha, spelled wrong, with an anarchy sign for the A. Well, my friends and I all had a good laugh about BUDDAH. Anytime we'd see him we'd yell out BUDDAH (kind of like the SNL skit where the jewish ladies say "her legs were like buddah"). He'd give us an angry glare.
We walked by that tag very often, and one day there was an arrow written in pencil pointing at it, that said "retart." None of my friends drew it, so clearly we weren't the only ones getting a good laugh from this piece of graffiti.
Well slowly, this tag became covered in much more graffiti. A lot of people writing things like "is a retard" and "you suck dick" and my brother wrote "I can't believe it's not..." above it. He or his friends would retaliate back by trying to cross it out, but it didn't work. It became this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/asdf23/buddah2.jpg
Some of the graffiti around it doesn't make sense unless you know my neighborhood. It's classic. A few days after this picture was taken, it was all painted over.
Moral of the story: If you're going to be a tagger, don't be a lame one.

Warning to all of you in cold states, many types of spray paints get a different runnier consistency in cold weather and it makes it difficult to make a stencil becuase of the runny paint.
I ****ed up my Against Me! one. :(
That was entertaining as hell. ^^^
Oh, it was really entertaining for us. Every time we'd walk past it, there'd be something new. Anytime we passed him, we'd say "Buddah!" And his little freshman sidekick we occasionally called bread. (who's real name is sean, which is mentioned on the graffiti surrounding buddah). I even drew a nice sketch of Bread and Buddah, but it didn't turn out as planned.
Hopefully, he will be dumb enough to tag again.

Yep. I talked to him about it. I said "you know, you're spelling Buddha wrong, and that that's not how an anarchy symbol really looks. That's more of the bastardized hot topic version." to that he replied: "I know it's spelled wrong and I know it's the wrong anarchy symbol. I'm trying to be an individual."

I quite like pentagrams. Not for any symbolic reason, they just look nice. But the point of graffiti is to put across a message, and pentagrams don't do that very well. Especially if it's next to Buddah and the anarchism sign.

I once made my own incense mix, but never rolled it up. What you do is dry the herbs you want to use, chop them and grind them to a very fine powder using a mortar and pestle. sieve it a few times, REALLY refine the powder, and then mix it with a little bit of water and roll it up around a tooth pick. that's how my friend made them. I think you put them on light heat in the oven to dry after. you can also roll them into cones and dry them. I prefer conical incense.

I've used spray paint, and it works fairly well as long as you use a bright color, and more than one coat.
Candles are overboard.
The way I've done stickers in the past is just get some printable return adress things for smaller stickers, and bigger printable mail adress sheets, and just print onto them, or if you're cool, draw on them.

Your local craft store will almost definately have fabric paint. You might be better off getting plain fabric paint anyway, I've heard fabric spraypaint does't work too well. If you really wanna do it from a spray can, though, regular spraypaint works alright. I'd go with bottled fabric paint and a paint roller, though. Also, dye is probably just not a good idea.
I'd abandon the scented candle idea. I mean honestly, how many people do you think would actually buy scented candles? It's probably just more trouble than it's worth.
I've never done stickers before... maybe you could try and find some sticker sheets that will run through your printer somewhere.
coheneran

Most office supplies stores will have sticker sheets, but some printers don't take them, or you need a special ink cartridge or something like that. check that out. patches are easy, as someone said already. make the stencil, get black canvas (or some other rough fabric) and white paint on in 2 or three thin layers. wait to dry between each layer. and remember, don't sell to make a profit! that's the true punk way. sell to break even.

Another thing you could do is design a cool stencil with your band logo and make like two dozen of them and hand them out. Everyone loves spraying cool stuff. In fact, let's presume that while you're playing, the people on the front row are enjoying you the most. It's a crap presumption, but stay with me. If everyone in the front row is 'your biggest fan' etc. then hand out the stencils to the guys in the front. If they like you the most, they will be most likely the ones who want to spray your band logo all over McDonalds.

can anyone give me a how to on making stickers, and scented candles(im serious, although the candles may be a bit overboard)?
do u have access to a screen printing press. that is how i am doing my patche s at school.

Most office supplies stores will have sticker sheets, but some printers don't take them, or you need a special ink cartridge or something like that. check that out. patches are easy, as someone said already. make the stencil, get black canvas (or some other rough fabric) and white paint on in 2 or three thin layers. wait to dry between each layer. and remember, don't sell to make a profit! that's the true punk way. sell to break even.
theres some good grassroots companies that make stickers for cheap...

I got the stencil off stencilpunx, but when I printed it off it was too small. So I got out a ruler and doubled all the dimensions.
Awesome. What type of paint did you use and where'd you get it?

Well it may be a bit late now, but as far as pins go...
to make decent ones like the ones you buy from stores, the supplies cost somwhere in the six cents a pin area, but the machine to make them cost like 130-something dollars. It's probably best to get them made somewhere unless you plan to be making a lot of your own pins.

for patches my friend recommended taht i use denim sheets ( old jeans) and sew them under the thin fabric or T-Shirt fabric. that will make them sturdy.

Just don't wash whatever you are writing on in water, or it will fade big time.
Once I get some more sheets for my jacket, I'll post the brand and instructions for the dry cleaning, because its the best way to clean patched up clothing without fadeing and destroying.

I have a few more additions on my leather to show, but lack a digital camera. I'll try to take some next time I hang out with a friend of mine, in which case I'll probably have some more new stuff by then tho show as well
On it now:
Nile - spraypaint
Clockwork Orange - patch
Chaos UK - patch
Ratt - acrylic paint
To come soon (I hope);
Death - acrylic paint
Pork Dukes - acrylic paint or patch
G.B.H - acrylic paint
Iniquity - patch preferable since it's a pretty detailed logo
And whatever else I think of in the meantime.

Like I just badly implied, direct action involves a hell of a lot of DIY, so why not integrate the two threads, that way people looking for a certain action can find the DIY on it at the same time, and vice versa. I don't mind making a diraction thread, but I feel this way would make it easier.

Earth First! and Friends Of The Earth do much passive good for environmental and animal issues. However, have you tried looking at it from an ecowarrior's (sounds cooler) point of view? To them, the murder of an animal is no different than the murder of a human. Maybe they have connected with animals/nature on such a deep level that they have discovered a truth, or maybe they are psychopaths who found a "righteous" way to hurt people. Again, I do not advocate their violent actions, but I like to look at an argument from all sides.

I'm sure some of them are in tune with nature that way and such, but I still don't think it justifies hurting another human because they may have been (directly or indirectly) involved in the hurting of an animal. Then you have stumped down to the level of the person hurting the animal.

The ALF is a group loosely made up of anyone who wishes to further the cause of animal liberation. There are no leaders and anyone who participates (independently of everyone else) can consider themselves a member.
It would be unfair to label everyone associated with the organization a terrorist as it is a pronounced non-violent group and all cells participate on their own. Of course the media has distorted the image of the group even if some members have used violent means to promote their cause.
All in all, contrary to what some think, the ALF is responsible for countless positive efforts in the political-activism of animal rights. If you still have doubts, think about currents events. Not all muslims are terrorists.
Edit: Most examples of the ALF's efforts includes saving animals that are in immediate danger (i.e. saving animals from labs or sabotaging hunts.

for single screen print and i am talking just word or a simple picture. just cut out the stencil with a pen knife. set it up in a screen rack and use a special paste or paint. lay out your t-shirt and using a rubber thing push down on the stencil with the paint and rub it across two or three times and use a special oven that has a conveyer belt to cook it. and hat is how you earn the module.

Sorry for being stupid, or uneducated in the ways of DIY, but if I don't print directly to the stencil material for painting, how would I transfer without ****ing it up, seeing as I have zero art talent.Well the way I did it, was use some semi transperant film, then taped the film to the back, hung it up by a window and traced through, then cut along the lines.
If you're doing it another way, print it, cut out the stencil, then place that on top of the stencil material and trace the edges, then cut that out.
