So I need some advice and/or opinions. I've got a bunch of stencils set to make, and I'll be buying a black jean jacket soon.
My dilema is, should I spray the stencils directly onto the jacket, or make patches and sew them onto the jacket? I'm leaning toward stencils, because it'd be better off that way if I mess up. Plus it will give me an excuse to buy fabric, so I'll end up making alot more stencils.
I also think I'm going to remove the sleeves, and re-attach them with zippers, so it can be a vest during the warmer months.

wouldn't it be easier to instead of of printing out a stencil on a piece of cardboard, cutting iit out, and sparaypainting it onto patch to just take an image of the logo you want, taping a patch material to the piece of paper and printing it out be much easier? Thats how i make patches and they come out really good. Thoughts...

Some printers can't take cloth through them. And if you only have inkjet ink in your printer, it will wash off and/or smear if you ever wash what you put the patch on.

I just use tape.
Like how to attach the stencil to the clothing? I use a gluestick, but sometimes that will leave glue on the clothes. It comes out in the wash, though.

I'm going to make my first stencil and I have two questons. This has probably been asked before, but...
What kind of Paint would I use that wouldn't wash off Clothing?
What would I make the stencil out of that would be most effective; Paper or Cardboard?

Fabric paint, probably.
The best thing would probably be thin cardboard, or something like posterboard or manilla folder.

If you were to print that out, err. How the f'uck does that site work.
the thing that makes this site different is that the stencils have little spaces between enclosed areas, so you dont have to take the cut outs and align them up.

You need something as you stencil, preferably something plastic like transparency paper or you can use thin cardboard. Copy you design onto the cardboard adn cut out the parts that you want to be in colour with a craft knife or X-acto knife. Then place your stenil on your shirt and make sure thats the stencil doesnt move around, so use tape to hold the stencil down. Then take your fabric paint and use a rolloer and just paint over your sencil. Give it a couple of coats and some time to dry then you're done.
Use this site as well...
http://www.stencilrevolution.com/tutorials/tutorialsview.php?id=2
thats hard and long (no pun intended)
all you really need to do is print out the design on a cardboard paper (like poster paper material), cut it out, then paint the stencil with fabric paint (you can find it at a craft store like michael's) on to whatever. then wait for it to dry.

Well, I make screenprint patches. Basically with a screen you can make more of the same stencil and have better ink distribution. If you want to invest in one, screenprinting isn't hard (if you need help you could email me). Screens are rarely more than 20$, ink is around 5-6$ for a little jar.

Buy iron-on paper from office max or wherever, and it will probably come wiht instructions. If not, load it into the printer (it should at least tell you which way to load it,) print it, and iron it on. It's pretty simple.

123 and with transparency paper you can wash off the paint and use it over and over again
oh and on the subject of stencils and spray paint vs fabric paint, I find spray pant to go on way too rough, like stiff and un comfortable to wear, fabric paint however bends and folds really easily with out like cracking. I lost the original but heres one of a crass shirt I made, not the best to show off the shirt, but yeah...

okay, I've decided to use fabric paint with a roller. But, I have a new problem; what kind of paper should I use? And how do you guys actually cut the things out? Is there a step-by-step guide anywhere?
RudeBoyStompin
09-08-2005, 08:16 PM
I prefer to use thin posterboard for the stencil. I used to print out a piece of paper with the design and tape it on the posterboard and cut it out that way but now I just cut out a paper-sized piece of posterboard and print the design directly onto it. If you have a decent printer I highly suggest the latter method. To cut the stencils out I would recommend a craft knife (x-acto knife). Hope that helps.

Like RudeBoy said, thin posterboard is pretty good, although some people have suggested transparency paper, which I haven't tried, but it definately sounds like a good idea, although it may be a bit expensive. And again, an x-acto knife is probably the best way to cut it out.

it is still called effort, ask one of the sales clerks if they can special order you some(many joints wont charge extra on special orders on things that they carry, but are out of), or ask when the next shipment will come in.
even if you dont realise it, you make a statement with where you spend your money. Yes wal-mart has every ****in' thing ever made under the sun within their doors, but that convenience costs many people their dreams/jobs/sense of hope... i suggest you learn more about the store that you are lending your patronage to, before you continue shoping there..
and quit defending your self with lies, they're a flimsy defence at best and many people loose their respect for you when they see through your lies..
now decide: They all went out of busines OR I went to a few, but they were out of the product i was looking for...

You're still killing the community where it is located. Wal Marts are leeches that should be avoided at all costs.
You can go to a lot more places to get this stuff. Try craft stores, even tiny communities have at least one craft store. Even Michaels is better then Wal Mart.
Put in some effort and you can get this stuff. If you aren't going to bother making the effort, then why do DIY in the first place, just buy your stuff premade like everyone else.

Most come with a program that will reverse the image for you, and any printer should be able to use the paper, as long as its not really thick, which they usually aren't.

I tried making a SLAYER stencil by tracing a logo and cutting with an exactco knife, d'amn hard. But, that was probably easier than most, most of it is just straight lines. The hardest thing is cutting things that are close together.
If you're spray painting, be sure to hold the can a considerable distance from the stencil, the air will push the stencil up and will ruin it.

if you get thick photo paper instead of regular paper you can just cut it, regular paper will slide around a lot or rip sometimes

I just made a stencil from a Banksy. I'll have to freehand the flowers. I can't wait to put this on something.

Cool. Freehanding the flowers would be cool too.

Banksy is why I want to be a graffiti artist some day.

Here are a bunch of pictures of my DIY stuff. Sorry if some are dark, I turned off the flash thinking it was glaring too much, I was wrong and too lazy to retake the pictures
Front of my jacket (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/PunkRockLoser666/DIY/Jacket/JacketFront1001.jpg) yes, that's a DIY Triggerfish patch
Back of my jacket (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/PunkRockLoser666/DIY/Jacket/JacketBack1001.jpg)
Front of my vest (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/PunkRockLoser666/DIY/Vest/VestFront1001.jpg)
Back of my vest (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/PunkRockLoser666/DIY/Vest/VestBack1001.jpg)
What the back of my vest will look like soon (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/PunkRockLoser666/DIY/Vest/VestBackFuture.jpg) As soon as I stop being lazy and put those patches on
Three stencils I've made but haven't used yet (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/PunkRockLoser666/DIY/Other/Stencils.jpg)
I think I posted this before but... Hand drawn hammer-sickle patch (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/PunkRockLoser666/DIY/Patches/Img_0021.jpg)
Where did you get that LoC patch?

Yeah, one blemish doesn't really lessen my opinion of him though. I mean I'm sure a lot of good artists eat meat.

Juan's idea for a shirt to make to wear tomorrow = I'm going to permi marker "Spreading Beats all over the world, spreading rhymes all over your ears"
Or something like that.
SUGGESTIONS!
A few weeks ago I made my friend a Crass patch for her birthday. I've made her a few patches before too. When I gave it to her I said "you know, you could make this yourself. That's kind of the point... being that it's DIY" And she said "oh, I never even thought of that"
How silly.

is there any way you can write on a black shirt & it will wash out? i painted on 3 with acrylic paint & it's still there. i used markers on white shirts but obviously you can't do that with black shirts..

I had a shirt idea the other day, but I've been a failure so far in working it out.
It will have a picture of Mitch Hedberg with the words "That ****er eats cake" under it. I don't want to do screen printing because it can be expensive, so I'm trying to make a stencil of his face using photshop, but so far I've failed.

stencilrevolution.com has some good tutorials on how to make stencils with photoshop.

Yeah I was using theirs, it was just coming out insanely complicated, but I may still use it. I only really need the general shape of his face and the long hair, Mitch fans will know whats up.

Ha, using a better picture I made a better stencil
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/PunkRockLoser666/DIY/Other/mitchstencilcopy.jpg
A lot of the smaller details will be skipped, of course, but I got a general shape there that Mitch fans will reconize, and non Mitch fans will think its some weird unibomber.

With a black shirt, bleach pen or white acrylic paint.

What a lot of cheap taggers around where I live do is take the free stickers they have at the post office, and write on those, and stick them everywhere. It's a really crappy way to make stickers, though.

If you do it right, it actually looks pretty good. Paint markers and everything on those can make some pretty cool stickers.

Way too crowded, too many patches. And the sideways back patch looks kind of odd. Good selection of patches though.

I got a jacket for like 8 bucks at target and I'm slowly putting logos on it in my silkscreening class. So far I've got the Chumbawamba - Never Mind The Ballots logo on my sleeve, the broken gun Anarchy & Peace Crass logo and a really big Flux of Pink Indians logo on screens ready to print, and a path I made that says Leftover Crizack in little letters made out of hearts. I'll post pictures when its more done in like a week or so.
But seriusly, Silkscreening is such a badass class.
