yes i just wanted to do this mainly cuz i have no life. and i lov alkaline trio. dont tease me because of this. its a guilty please. any way onto the review.
alkaline trio is matt skiba-vocals/guitar dan andriano-bass/vocals (then) glenn porter-drums/ a small amount of vocals (now) derek grant-drums/vocals
this album kicks off alkaline trio making albums. they made a demo and i think 2 or 3 eps before this. now onward to the review.
CRINGE- great start to the album. a very fast punk song. i really like it. its got a really driving guitar with a lot of distortion, more than usual. its a good song, with good lyrics. a great start. 5/5
COP- a pretty cool song. its got a wierd two guitar pick scratch intro over a cop siren(get it a cop siren the song name is cop? no? ehh forget it. i'm not a comedian) a slower verse. its one of those songs that plays a chord or two between lines of singing. a kinda bland song. still worth hearing. 3.5/5
SAN FRANCISCO-this song is one of my favorites on the album. the first verse is basically a palm muted note or two then a a chord. its cool. and a really catchy chorus. the last time matt sings the chorus he screams it. not like screamo screaming. just powerful screaming. and he does it well. very well. 5/5
NOSE OVER TAIL- one of the best versions alkaline trio did of this song. itg oes back to their demo. a very fast and catchy song. it has one of those famous interludes made up mostly of octaves. it has that famous line when all the music stops abruptly and matt sings " i wanna rub your back" a famous alk3 song. and a good one.-5/5
AS YOU WERE- an average filler song, but not a bad song by any stretch. its just average. not much outshines anything else on the album. average lyrics, average guitar tune. nothing special here.-3/5
ENJOY YOUR DAY- a pretty boring acoustic song. it gives dan a chance to sing. a kinda cool intro. his voice sounds really scratchy here. the album wouldve been fine, if not better without this song. bland lyrics and a boring guitar tune and an all around boring song. -1/5
CLAVICLE-this song is pure goodness. a powerful verse. a slowed down chorus then it speeds back up. fast powerful song. its a definate bright side of this album. the lyrics however are kind of odd " i wanna wake up naked/next to you/kissing the curb of your clavicle" great song. wierd lyrics. not exactly bad lyrics just... wierd.-4.5/5
MY LITTLE NEEDLE-this song is absolutley awesome. the guitar has a really cool intro its a wierd amount of distortion its like matts using a really powerful distortion pedal. a cathy verse using a clean tone, more a clean bassy tone. a very very powerful chorus. this song is probably one of the best songs on this album. i highly recomend listening to it, given the chance-5/5
SOUTHERN ROCK-its an okay song. its got a really cool bass line played over a really bass-y guitar tone. then a powerful chorus with very powerful lyrics "with stolen wings and evil ways/ trade south with the keys to the pearly gates" a pretty good overall song 4/5
MESSAGE FROM KATHLEEN- a really cool drum intro. a palm muted verse. then an extremely powerful chorus, showing dans power. he only gets 2 chances to sing: mesage from kathleen and enjoy your day. message from kathleen really proves he is a great singer. its a really great over all song. 4.5/5
TROUBLE BREATHING- a cool intro followed by a sort of breakdown then glenn screams 1,2,3,4! in the background taking me back to the ramones when dee dee would randomly go 1234! a catchy song. a really driving guitar tone with a lot of distortion and a really awesome chorus. very good lyrics "you told me to look at the stars/ look at how god**** ugly the stars are" a great song. another one of my favorites. a true great. 6/5 (yes i realize its 6/5)
SORRY ABOUT THAT- a good acoustic song(finally) its the way an acoustic song should be: a great sounding chord pattern, powerful lyrics, and powerful vocals. this song, despite the fact that its acoustic, is a relly great song.- 4/5
well this album is very good. i highly recommend it to any alkaline trio fan or any fan of older punk like misfits or ramones. i see a slight resemblance with the ramones and alkaline trio.
