View Full Version : How did you name your band?

Ok, this isn't a thread asking for band names, I was just curious as to how your band got it's name, how long it took etc. (Assuming you're in one.)

Fire away! :)

Well, my current band isn't yet named, but my last band was called 'Shed Fulla Eejits' - mainly because we practiced in the lead guitarist's dad's giant shed - and the lead singer's mum called us a bunch of eejits... so we put two and two together.

My band is called Bleed The Ink.

Legend has it that our singer used one of those random name generators on the net, then our rather intellegent bass player said "its kinda like we're putting a lot of emotion into the songs we write"

putting in emotion = bleeding
Songs written = ink

bleed the ink

First we tried many methods of thinking up names, all writing down a word, and seeing what combos we could come up with or something, then grabbing a book, turn to a page, first word on that, then keep doing it until something either funny or good would happen (when we got "finger grandma" we stopped that method) but none of it seemed to match our style of music until later that night I was expressing to my bassist that I wanted something about how my life had been like, totally ****ed up socially(lets just say I"m a tad overweight and when I was a few years younger had bad people skills) and how when you figure out there's no way you can possibly leave it, you jsut stand your ground and eventualyl good stuff will happen, and that seemed to be how it had gone with him and another person in our band and he came up with Tormented Reality, and it really seems to fit our music.

Our band was originally going to be called "Deaper Meanings", where everything we played had a deeper meaning of some kind. Our first CD was planned to be called "Spectrum" such that we would play a little bit of everything. Then we thought, why not just go with Spectrum, as opposed to limit ourselves simply by name? Besides, with a band name like Spectrum, we can play literally anything and everything we want simply as the nature of the band. Then we could pick and choose from there.

My band is concidering Counted Shadows. There really isn't a story behind it, but we want to make music that people can relate to. Some people have the feeling that they are excluded from society, like no one cares about them, things they've done, or their goals. But there is someone out there that cares deeply about them, and their shadow is counted. It's kind-of inspirational, to help people who feel this way, feel better about themselves.

umm well my main band: we were all just sitting around making fun or rap and wiggers, and we made up the first part "straight-up". then there was this old doll on top of a piano in my living room that we were sitting in so that came the second part, "dollies". so we are The Straight-Up Dollies.

secondary band: me and the guitarist were sitting in math class scribbling words on a piece of paper and matching them for something to do. we wrote down names and stuff like that too. anyways, by the end of that class, we had a name: Examining Julie.

Well, as me and some friends thought we'd like to start a band, but don't all currently have the instruments/ equipment necassary, (like I don't currently have an electric guitar, I'm stuck with an acoustic etc.). We were walking down to the tennis courts to play some tennis, and we just started bouncing ideas around, and eventually looked at a friends epi-pen, and saw the name Auto- Injector, we thought we could use that. It seems to be good.

/ Answers own question.

Well the original band members (only one of whom remains except me) were in the pub, quite pissed and we began ending every scentence with "In accordance with the prophecy" then we started to take out scrolls, and read them as we talked. (imaginary scrolls) Thus we called them Invisible Prophecies. Later, we decided that would be a good band name. Then we changed it to Untold Prophecies cos we thought it sounded better. And thats the story as they say

My current band's name is Helvetica.

And yes, we did get it from the computer font. It wasn't taken or anything, and the only thing musical that had taken from it was this country album 'Helvetica Bold'. Since we're a metal band, no-one would make the connection with the aforementioned country album, plus it was just cool sounding in general (And the only name we could all agree on).

It started with GJ Tunes in the elementary days, standing for me (Griffin) and my long-time friend Jesse. When we got guitars and such, we went through lame no-meaning names such as Twist of Fate and Anxiety.

Since I've been on the one-man-band thing, I've stuck with "Mithryl". Basically, mithril is the strongest metal in middle-earth, and I like how it looks with the y written in medieval fonts. Therefore, I kept it.

The way I first came up with 'The Perfect Error' was, I was trying to think of a band name, and at the time I was heavily interested in irony and contradictions, as you can see from songs I wrote such as 'Relativity', which can be found in the songwriting and lyrics forum. Anyway I was trying to think of phrases that would make people think because it sounded out of place. I was thinking about something you would never find somewhere. Devil in Heaven, Blinding Flash of Black, etc etc etc. (I cant remember all the exact ones I thought of, I know there was one about a rainbow). My main idea was finding a problem in something perfect, but the thing is, perfect things, NEVER have problems, thus the irony and contradiction.
If you want more proof that jopkins the monkey is a thief, I can send you (whoever wants it) the conversation over MSN Messenger with 'LiZZySkYnRd7^' (A registered user of mx forums). At that time, her and myself were discussing band names, because I didn't have one, and she is an experienced writer, and had been in bands in the past.
Take that 'Jopkins the Thieving Monkey'!
Anyway, on how I came up with the name 'Pendulum', My guitarist and I were still after another band name (This was after "Perfect Error/Problem/Flaw" and "New World Order") because NWO was already taken by some dudes in the U.S. So I started rummaging the dictionary for random cool words, as I do for songwriting inspiration, and I came across 'Pendulum'. I was throwing heaps of names at Dhani (My guitarist) and he was saying no to all of them and suggesting queer names like 'Shadow Legion', but then as I mentioned the word pendulum he said "Hold that thought"
"Hold onto what?" (Humour)
"Hold that thought!"

So he comes back online and says "But how would it represent us?" and I said "Well there are plenty of great bands with meaningless names. Pendulum is just a cool word"
And so we became "Pendulum".
I am still working on the bands website:
www.pendulum.12345.com.au

TY for reading my ranting and raving.

Our first name was Memory Hole, from Orwell's 1984, for no reason other than that it sounded cool. We then were Contra, because we liked being against something, until we realized that we were'nt very against anything, especially not the typical flow of music, as we hoped to be. So we matured a lot more musically and now we're Detour, but still thinking of a name (we needed one for a gig so we just thought of one). We're hopefully going to be The Aftermath, if we can convince our bassist (he doesn't like it).

Our band started out as Smoked Fish, then we got rid of that and had nothing for months, then our singer left and we changed drummers, so we had to come up with a new name. Our rhythm guitarist thought of Orange 9 mm, which we all thought was too punky, as was Hit and Miss. Finally we thought of Ambrosia, which we all liked, but it turned out it's already a band. Ours is "Session Nine", after some spooky film our guitarist saw (well, if naming a band after a spooky film is good enough for Tony Iommi, it's good enough for us). There's a few other bands out there with the same name, but we were there first and we put out a CD which none of the others did as far as I am aware, so we've probably got trading rights to the name as a band or something. Unless the film studios tell us we can't use it.

However... my band didn't like it :( but if you steal it I will kick your @$$ :D
