Ok, this thread can be a compilation of good songs for beginners to learn. There are a hundred and one threads asking for and listing such songs, so lets compile it all in one place.

(JerrytheRacecarDriver / Grondahl gets a cookie for the idea)
http://i.cnn.net/cnn/2003/WORLD/europe/10/02/cookie.crumble/story.cookies.jpg

Here's the plan. For ease of browsing, post them in this format

[artist name] - [song name] - [difficulty] - [any other note]

I'll start off with a few obvious ones.

Rage Against The Machine - Bombtrack - Easy
Rage Against The Machine - Wake Up - Easy
Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name - Easy

Primus - Antipop - Easy - good basic slap practise
Primus - Kill The Sacred Cow - Easyish
Primus - Golden Boy - Moderate

When searching for an easy song to play, it's a safe bet that punk is the way to go.

Discharge - Free Speech for the Dumb - easiest song ever
Mistfits - Die, Die My Darling - very easy
Metallica - Crash Course in Brain Surgery - easy, almost moderate; solo takes time to get right

I should also mention that any song by Van Halen is easy as balls on bass.

Karl Denson - Unwind your mind - really easy - it's a 1-5 in C

Jerytheracecardriver get 1,000 cool points from me. Now we just have to post this in the normal forum and add some more advanced songs to the list. Songs for tapping, songs for slapping, songs for harmonics, songs for double thumbing. Songs for billy and songs for sue. Songs that love to be played by you. Songs that dance and laugh and sing. Songs that simply don't do a thing. Ok im done.

Sorry for going backwards a long way in time, but in the second post in this thread, "JerrytheRacecarDriver" said that RHCP - Higher Ground was a good beginners song. I view myself as a pretty handy bassist and i still have trouble with the starting riff in this song... Was this a mistake or does everyone just outclass me so incredibly? Personally, i suspect the latter of the two!

I have to say, if people are looking for a relatively easy piece to improve their rythym on the bass, they should try playing the Bass part for Led Zeppelin - Moby DIck... Apart from being a great song that's fun to play, it really gets you using a lot of the fretboard and is great for a general fun piece to play...

Jerry the Racecar Driver
10-05-2004, 09:01 AM
bassman21, I never said that Higher Ground was easy, merely that it was a good song for practising/learning slap with.

The riff itself is one of the simplest slap riffs I can name, but it does move at a speed which makes it tricky for some.

Yeah, I know the tabs, but I'm wondering about the actual technique of playing the song. It sounds kinda slap/pop to me, but I just can't figure it out. No matter how many times I've played the song through, I can't get the same sound and feel.

Wintermute

It is slap/pop. Tim C has a very unique sound, partly because he makes his own pickups, but that's the technique, at least.

Is there a place on the internet that I can find all of these songs so I can hear them? It's kind of hard to learn them if I can't hear them. I used to have Kazaa but that screwed up my computer big time so I don't have that anymore. Any suggestions of a place I can listen to them at would be appreciated, thanks.

i've provided comments for all these :)

anti-flag - drink drank punk

fairly easy, good to learn finger posistion when playing that quick transistion 345 i think it is

lostprophets - shinobi vs dragon ninja

fairly easy again, has good time variations of the same riff. also teaches some stuff on creating the breathing noise from going up and down continously

mxpx - chick magnet

good to learn some hammer ons.

system of a down - the metro

good timing variations and learning of riff changes

once your a lil better... try these

ataris - teenage riot

pretty long riff. nice to play

choking victim - in my grave

nice ska line

bigwig - falling down

nice intro...

if you are bored and want to play some real easy songs:

machine head - from this day
green day - brain stew
troggs - wild thing
system of a down - prison song
choking victim - f**ked reality

heres something that worked for me.. not sure if it'll work for u. i started playing a heap of punk songs first... then moved to more metal stuff. the punk stuff i could play nearly everything and it laid some good ground work to get into harder stuff.

hope i was of some use. i am still a beginner/intermediate player myself.

You aren't fooling anyone, Mr. Fozworth.

Actually, I probably was until you stuck your nose in

Besides, all I was doing was referring the best post in the thread to anyone who missed it. That post just happened to be made by me, that's all...

And to make this post relevant to the thread, more cool, fun, easy basslines:

Genesis - I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)

Jeff Buckley - Everybody Here Wants You - Really easy, smooth bassline.

And one of the easiest basslines ever (for most of the song, anyway):

Genesis - Mama

Thumbs up to the "Monkey's Gone To Heaven" by The Pixies recommendation, very easy.
"Paranoid" by Black Sabbath is also easy, another good suggestion there.

It's a shame that most of these easy songs are punk, which I don't listen to. >:|

give it away is not slap... you can if you want but there are a lot better songs to practice for slapping. also why is everything here easy, i would class easy as something you would suggest to some1 who has just picked up the bass, i would never suggest wyonna's big brown beaver to a beginer, i would just say put a little bit more thought into the difficulties instead of trying to show of by suggesting a clearly hard song is easy, t'is pafetic should be helping beginners

what the easyist and cool sounding song to play on bass guitar?

Shyanel
12-18-2004, 11:33 AM
hehe....

smoke on the water - deep purple :D

EVERYONE knows that...most people manage to transcribe it by ear to, it really is the easiest thing ever written.

If you want a shot at something fast, try this little funk lick i wrote.

(the numbers are 12's and 14's not 1's and 4's)

G---------------------|
D---1414---------1414|
A---------------------| x3
E-12----12-0h12------|

then

G----------------------|
D---1414---------14-13|
A----------------------| just as a variation.
E-12----12-0h12-------|

basically remember to play the 14's quick, and pronounce the 12's quite strongly. It's a really easy lick, but if you get it down and play it right it sounds fantastic and you can put some sweet variations to it.

thats sucks because thats the kind of music i like and i dont really know how to tune it good

Buy a tuner that's NOT automatic, that'll do it for you.

I have a Korg CA-30 which is automatic, but they also do one called the GA30 whihc isnt, and its not that expensive...i think about £20 if i remember rightly.

As for more begginer songs.

RHCP - Mellowship Slinky in B Minor (i found it easy anyway and im still a n00b)
RHCP - Californication (Again i found it easy)
The Hives - Die, Alright! (awesome song, great build up before the chorus..JAM those B's!!!)
36 Crazyfists - Dislocate (pretty easy)

I also put a bassline to Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz, which doesn't actually have a bass line in the album as i remember. If anyone wants to see that contact me, it's a pice of p1ss to play :D
Then again it's only really one riff, then whatever variations you wanna throw in...i prefer free-form improv anyways :D

If you want a song that both sounds great is hard to play trey hysteria by muse, the riff soundsa awesome, but even if you can play the riff, its physically a very exhauting to play

a couple of other muse songs worth learning are stockholm syndrome and butterflies and hurricanes. Not wise they are very easy (at one point in SS chris plays an open d about 64 times in a row) But they are very fast and very tiring to play. But if you can nail them it'll do wonders for your picking hand accuracy and stamina

I'd say...start off with a song that kinda challenges you. If u can get over the initial difficulties then u know you're gonna be a good bassist, some people really arent suited to bass and this will show that. Dont Stick to one genre of music either explore with music even if u dont initially like it! Just totally Chill out when u play...so many bassists i know try and show me up when i play...(cause yeh, i am the only female bassist in our town) But they look so uptight its funny, dont go rigid and stiff let ur fingers go floppy...and follow the music. Relaxing is the best way to becoming a great bassist!
A Good song to Start on is;
Lit-Miserable
And any Offspring song-cause they are all sooooo easy!

if u h8 blink then i fink u need ot get ur hed checked out personally

Sorry dude, but you'll find a lot of people who play bass dont like blink, myself included. It's just that hoppus is so poor. I mean as a fundemental bassist he serves his function perfectly, but he has no creative talent and no personal flair. Sorry, it's just the way it is bud....

....as for something easy to play - have a shot at "The O'Jays - For the Love Of Money"

it goes like this:

G ---------------------------------------------------------
D -------x11-11--x9--x9--x9x--x9--x9x--x9x--x9x--9x--8-9-11
A ---------------------------------------------------------
E --9--9---------------------------------------------------

thats it, just make up your own variations as you see fit. It's great fun to play and it gives you a use for your phaser (if you have one), although it still sounds good without.

I wouldn't say higher ground and time is running out are appropriate begginer songs to be honest, the timing on higher ground is pretty tough and time is running out has some nasty bits too.

I think you probably found them easy because like you said, you practice a LOT and used to play the gee-tar!

mellowship slinky in b major by the chili peppers is one of my favorite songs to play. The intro is easy, but after that ( depending on ur skill obviously) it gets a little tricky, but I have been playing bass since christmas and I can play it( i don't have the complete rythm down) so if you have been playing longer u will be able to play it

i'm sorry for the proliferation of ramones songs, but dee dee practically taught me my bass rudiments!! lolololol

...i really, really hope you didn't think that was actually THAT funny

anyways, good beginner songs.. hm... although i think eventually theres a point where you start writing your own rather then just continuously learning other peoples stuff, here's some stuff to get you started off and build your confidence up:

Johnny Thunders And The Heart Breakers - Pirate Love (Great song, fun to play, fun to listen to)
Jet - Are you Gonna Be My Girl
Grey Matter - Burn No Bridges
Black Flag - Fix Me
Blink 182 - What's My Age Again
Blink 182 - All The Small Things
The Killers - Mr. Brightside
The Blood Brothers - Trash Flavored Trash
The Blood Brothers - Guitarmy
Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Jet - Cold Hard Bitch
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

those are all REALLY, REALLY REALLY easy and super fun to play, they all sound great too.. and as always are fun to play along to the actual song with

Songs that helped me very much:

Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
Communication Breakdown - Led Zeppelin
Godzilla - Blue Oyster Cult
NIB - Black Sabbath
Guerilla Radio - Rage Against The Machine(RATM)
Bombtrack - RATM
Bulls on Parade - RATM very easy
Bombtrack - RATM - takes a bit of practice but once you get it its real fun
Testify - RATM - personal fav very simple
Scar Tissue - Chili Peppers

Personally I don't think their is such a thing as "Beginner" songs. Anything you sit down and really work out will come to you in time. Playing bass is all a matter of finger excersize. Once your fingers can move fast enough you'll have no trouble with bass, from, there its up to your creativity.

Personally i can't stand blink 182 and all this wannabe punk ****. punk died with the sex pistols, black flag, ramones, misfits are still around i think.

Not too mention lately theres too much "punk" and no where near enough metal....we need people to step up and be the next Pantera!!!

as for easy tunes to play
Black Sabbath - Sweet Leaf, The Wizard
Cream- Sunshine Of Your Love
Gwar - Sick Of You
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters, The God That Failed
Rage Against The Machine - Bullet In The Head, Fistfull Of Steel
White Stripes - Seven Nation Army (Stupid Easy)
Pantera - This Love (gets harder as the song goes on)

these sonegs helped me alot:
communication breakdown: led zeppelin
Time: Pink Floyd (you might not get it all but the chorus is good.)
Whole lotta love: Led zeppelin

One thing i recommend doing is listening to the song being played by the band on the internet or on cd either before or as you play the song. it helps... really.

First songs I played on bass were
Sum 41 - Motivation, In Too Deep, and What We're All About (super-easy)
Most of Green Day's stuff is easy, Ramones are simple..
Anything by Simple Plan, Blink 192, Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne are really easy. I don't particularly like those bands, but the bass lines are ridiculously simple.
Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone, also fairly easy
Jimi Hendrix - Fire, Cocaine
ZZ Top - La Grange
All these basslines are simple but effective, so if you want to learn something quickly without much difficulty, try those.

Yeah, but it isnt the bass in the song - just listen the bass is completely different and alot harder than that, that is the tune played on the electric guitar for bass what you learnt.

Go on mxtabs.net and search smoke on the water, LISTEN to the song then find a tab that is right, listen for the bass it doesnt come in for a bit.

well tbh most Maiden songs are very similar (ie they almost always go 7-5-3-5-7) but the first one i learnt has to be The Evil That Men Do, which is more or less that ^ on the A string (look up the actual tab, i cant remember what it actually is :))

Thin lizzy - The boys are back in town (good for working on rythmn and left hand)

Metallica is the best metal, one of the few bands who can actually play their instruments and can sing good...not much of a fan of bands that just scream and hit their instruments...

Well the very first tab I learnt when I picked up my first bass (a black yamaha RBX170 which is still have) was... Pink Floyd - Money
This is a great tune that plays around 2-5 fret area on all strings and is a good way to get you moving as it re-inforces the movements in the C Major scale that is kinda the first thing you should learn.
After that I went for the Nice and easy 7 nation army and Brain Stew.

Other good tabs for a bit of finger exercise are:
Polly - Nirvana
Come As You Are - Nirvana
Lovecats - The Cure (my favorite)

These are not easy for an absolute beginner but with a little persaverance they will click and there is nothing more satisfying than the first time you get them to sound just right.
