For those of a simillar vintage to myself, who may hanker back to the early 80's Brit Funk sound of Mark King and Level 42 - "DUNE TUNE" was the very first piece I learned to play. I love it.
It's not that hard for a beginer but it gives you the chance to play bass as it's meant to be played, as lead. ;)

Hi guys
I'm looking for a fun song to play, something like little sister (qotsa) and i was hoping maybe you know some songs. I would like a song that goes rather fast, and is melodic. I would also like a song in the same genre as Qotsa.
Thx
Rikkus

The Transplants: Diamonds and Guns
Folk Implosion: Natural One *I do still have trouble with this one at times, but I can play it really, really slow. :p

I have never tryed this (since i'm not really a beginner) but I just thought of this if you want to build up speed in slap/pop with you right hand.
Take any simple root noting songs(most punk) and then just slap the root and pop the octave. Try to keep up with the song. Good songs for this is probally ones where the bass is just doing straight eighth notes.

Sorry dude, but you'll find a lot of people who play bass dont like blink, myself included. It's just that hoppus is so poor. I mean as a fundemental bassist he serves his function perfectly, but he has no creative talent and no personal flair. Sorry, it's just the way it is bud....
....as for something easy to play - have a shot at "The O'Jays - For the Love Of Money"
it goes like this:
G ---------------------------------------------------------
D -------x11-11--x9--x9--x9x--x9--x9x--x9x--x9x--9x--8-9-11
A ---------------------------------------------------------
E --9--9---------------------------------------------------
thats it, just make up your own variations as you see fit. It's great fun to play and it gives you a use for your phaser (if you have one), although it still sounds good without.
I know Hoppus aint excatly a bass genious, but he isnt tht bad. If u listen 2 sum of Blink's early stuff he plays sum realli cool bass lines, not so much in the more recent stuff, since Blink became famous. You cant really be tht creative as a bass player if u r only a 3 piece band cos the bassist kind of has 2 act like a rhythm guitarist.
Try Mutt, Carousel, Marlboro Man and basically all the songs in Cheshire Cat.
Oz Rembrandt

If your in a 3 piece, you need to be MORE creative, to fill the gaps where a rythm guitar plays.
Mark Hoppus isnt any good. Wasn't in early Blink, wasn't at the end of the bands carreer. Accept it.
fathergoat
09-01-2005, 02:46 PM
Agreed. You need to be more creative in a 3 piece band, and hell wouldn't you want to be more creative if you are a musician.
Hoppus was an average punk player on Cheshire, but slacked right after dude ranch. He was never good, just average.
If you want to start playing on a good foot play Primus, or any other band that does not stay in one place with technique.

Feeling Good - Muse
Seven Nation Army - White Stripes
I know these have been done to death, but I don't even own a bass - I can play the bass lines on my guitar. The last two I made up the basslines myself and I think they sound good :) I'm hoping to get some effects pedals to cover up some of my dodgy bits on TIRO  I hope to get good enough to play Hysteria and New Born

White Stripes: Play the GUITAR line on 7 nation Army on bass
Ramones: Blitzkrieg Bop, Beat on the brat
Intermediate: Muse-Hysteria
Horace Silver: Song for my Father
Miles Davis: So What
Steely Dan: Bodhisattva (easier if you just make up your own walking line)

lol i dont play bass but i already can play teenage riot and anti-flag stuff. maybe it's cause i'm a guitar player or maybe i have a nack for bass guitar. which is it?
It depends what Anti-Flag stuff you're talking about, a lot of people have stereotypes of Anti-Flag that all their stuff is easy or all of it is hard, just depends on the person. But really it's a huge mix. They have a lot of easy songs and a lot of moderate-advanced songs.
This list will be only Anti-Flag songs.
Easy:
Drink, Drank, Punk
Davey Destroyed The Punk Scene
That's Youth
Turncoat
The Panama Deception
911 For Peace
Moderate-Advanced:
Spaz's House Destruction Party
You've Got To Die For Your Government
Bring Out Your Dead
Angry, Young, And Poor
She's My Little Go-Go Dancer (pretty easy but the intro is pretty damn fast and the bridge may give the beginners trouble, so I put it here.)

Greenday - Brainstew
Greenday - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
Greenday - American Idiot
Greenday - Holiday
Blink 182 - All The Small Things
Blink 182 - First Date

Antiflag - 911 For Peace
Underoath - Reinventing Your Exit
System Of A Down - Sugar
System Of A Down - Aerials

I've been practising Citizen Erased by Muse and Holiday by Green Day which are good for beginners. I find it a little bit tricky trying to get the timing right when I first start practising a song, especially with these, but they're nice and easy after a little while. I don't find Hysteria easy at all - it's VERY fast and the bassline is continous through the whole song so I reckon your hand must die doing that all the way through :S

hey! who ever said that a 3 piece band has easy basslines has obviously never heard of rush.
That being said, a couple of good songs are:
*Easy*
-Learn your scales. Even though they are not a song, they will definately help you in becoming a better player.
-Franz Ferdinand - Take me out
-Gorillaz - Feel good inc.
-Most stuff by Blink-182, Greenday, and Sum 41
*And some others I suggest for fun. These may not be easy but I play them all the time and they are fun as hell to play.
-Jaco Pastorius - Portrait of Tracy, Donna Lee, Come on Come over, Barbary coast, Continuum. Also I am currently playing an awesome song for Jazz Band by Kris Berg known as "Fowl Play". listen to it and try to find yourself some charts. http://downloads.c-2.com/rams/D2809.mp3?sku=&cart=11355765771810049

coq roq - bob your head - easy - easy to play, plus, how can you notlike a song about chicken fries?
??? - super mario bros. underground theme - moderate(for beginner) - its hard to find a good tab for this song, but once you find the one with the octive jumps, then you've found the right one, this is also pretty fast for a beginner so, it'll work on string speed
??? - "worms" world party theme song - moderate - this is played pretty much all on one string, also it's a very spaced out, fast song, so it'll teach you to use your pinky which you should get used to using
metallica - moterbreath - adavanced (advanced beginner, i sightread it) - this is a very fast song, but pretty much most of the song uses only two strings, easy fretting, but will improve you're picking speed
can't find these tabs? i m me anytime and i'll get tab em out

[QUOTE=republican_bass]White Stripes- Seven Nation Army- Easy
seven nation army is played palm muted on an electric guitar.they dont have a bass player.
As Jaco Pastorius said as a bass player to get better is to also learn the melody or guitar part. So it really doesnt matter what instrument it is on the cd. If you hear it play it. play the guitar to it play the bass to it make your own bass to it. Thats the way to get better. Create your own listen use your ear and dont limit yourself to just bass stuff on the bass guitar.

This isn't directed at you, but I can't stand when people do a whole tab like that. You'd have to travel up and down the neck every other note to play it like they tab it, when if you just shifted a couple notes up a string, you wouldn't have to move your fretting hand anywhere down the neck.

I don't know if anyone said this already but...
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (Iron Butterfly): A really easy and fun song to play. It's got one riff that's repeated for pretty much the entire song. The first song I learned how to play on the bass.
Iron Man (Black Sabbath): Easy enough to learn, an a pretty awesome song in general. Great to bust out if you just want to entertain somebody.
Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple): The main riff is incredibly easy to learn. Personally I don't like this song, but a lot of people do and it's easy, so good for beginners.

i dont know if its been said or not. but if your just starting out and your trying to get a solid rhythem down off of a song. listen to The Police...when i was learning i always listened to "walking on the moon" and "de do do do, De da da da" etc. and it helped me becomed more strict in my playing instead of going all over the place. not that thats a bad thing in some cases but if you wanna be a good pocket player its something to learn...
also "how many more times" and "rock and roll" by Led Zeppelin..

Pennywise - Bro Hymn - Extremely Easy - The first song I ever played on a bass guitar.
Rancid - Journey To The End Of The East Bay - Easy/A bit harder than 'Easy - excellent intro riff to get down when you're a few months in.
NOFX - The Decline - Hard - Great Bass lines, Great Song, And try memorising 18 minutes of a song that has no chorus!

Playing Blink stuff, for a pick player, helps picking technique and rythm. Marks not an amazing bass player, but he can pick pretty fast and keep time too.

Amazing band. Urm.

Back to the Motor League - aint too hard, just watch the fills in the slow bit.
Antimanifesto - Cool fills at the start, pretty easy to follow, just need the speed.
Showdown and Less talk, more rock are pretty easy. As are Haille Selasse... and Apparently Im a PC facist...
Thanks dude, I' really digging this band lately.

Keep working at hysteria, and the chorus is different to the main riff:
G---5-3h5 (x2)--------------------7 5h7 (x2)
D------------------5-3h5 (x2) ------------------7 5h7(x2)
A-3---------------------------5----------------------------
E----------------3--------------------------5
I got a question: what does 5-3h5 (x2) mean?
I mean, I think it's like:3(then I don't know what the h is doing), and 5, and you repeat those two twice. Amirite?

Mxtabs was shut down by the RIAA (I think). There's a link to a letter posted before you login to the forums. The structure is still in tact but you cant actually open the tabs.

If the tab says
G-5h7
D----
A----
E----. You would fret the fifth fret on the G and pluck. Then while the note is still ringing you would fret the 7th fret without plucking.

Not sure if anyone mentioned:
-Parklife-Blur (easy...my first song...nice easy walking bassline)
-Das Alte Leid-Rammstein (easy)
-rammstein-rammstein (f**king easy as anything)
-Who made who- ac/dc (easy...also good practice for training your ear to hear the pitch changes...also, just a few notes)
-Sell your soul- kill cheerleader (easy)
-back in black- ac/dc (easy...I find ac/dc is good for training your ear to hear the difference between a and e string as williams plays a lot of a
-weisses fleisch(easy-ish) 0030 is the verse on the e...you have to pick up your speed to keep up but otherwise easy
-buck dich (easy/moderate)
-snap your fingers, snap your neck by prong/demon hunter (easy) the tabs you will see call for 3's and 5's every bar. The bass player is actually hitting them 3s choked off every few bars. I'd reccomend just playing open e's. it will be hard to tell the difference. 000 00 000 are the verses and 55 33 (on the e) and then 2 on the a is the song.

This is a little advanced, but one of the more easy 'solo bass' pieces to learn; Power by Marcus Miller is IMO one of the quintessential pieces to learn as a bassist. Not for beginners, but once you're ready you should try tackle it bit by bit.
