At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 7-year-old hockey players aside and asked,

"Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?"

The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

Do you understand that what matters is not whether we win or lose, but how we play together as a team?"

The little boy nodded yes.

So," the coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when a penalty is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, attack the referee, or call him a pecker-head. Do you understand all that?"

Again the little boy nodded.

He continued, "And when I call you off the ice so that another boy gets a chance to play, it's not good sportsmanship to call your coach a dumb asshole', is it?"

Again the little boy nodded.

"Good," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain all that to your mother."

I ordered a Space Phone today. It's a really simple device, comprised of two conical "ear trumpets" and a helical coil connecting them. It makes super sweet sounds when you hit the coil, or talk into one of the cones, etc. It sounds like a synthesizer, but is entirely acoustic.

I also went to seem some young local bands tonight, and had a good time with dancing.

haha. I pretty much had to watch it because one of my friends loves it, so I needed to watch it to say I'd watched it. Right from the start, I wondered how a movie about boxing starring Sylvester Stallone could be any good, but I figured Million Dollar Baby was awesome, so maybe I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Quite the opposite.

Hey Zappa, is your Alesis Micron good? Easy for a beginner? I almost bought a microKorg yesterday, but resisted the temptation to make an impulse buy. I'm considering either getting the Korg or an Alesis like yours. The Alesis looks cooler but the Korg looks easier to use.

I've never played a microKORG. I bought the Alesis based on internet reviews that seemedto favor it over the microKORG. I felt I needed full-sized keys, and some of the other features seemed appealing. The Micron is pretty user friendly, but I'm coming to the point where I really desire more knobs. It might be nicer for you to have less stuff on the board, I don't know. If you're not a tight budget, I might look into the Ion over the Micron.

I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I'm looking for something under 1k AU. I guess it will just come down to pricing. The microKorg might get annoying without full size keys, especially since I already play a keyboard a bit. On the other hand, it will be easier to get from overseas for a good price and the vocoder might be a good feature.

The Micron has a vocoder, but doesn't come with a mic. It's also insanely stupid and useless.

EDIT: Also...there's always real analog. I've been interested in the Roland-106, which you may be able to get secondhand for not much at all.

The boy I'm dating got a microKorg for Christmas that I've played. He said it was pretty easy to figure out and tweak and all that, and it didnt seem hard to use. It also has a sweet microphone that alters your voice when you talk into it and play it. The whole instrument is pretty sweet and sound, probably totally worth the $400.

I've been looking into getting a synth myself, but too am torn between the Korg and the Alesis.

I feel like I should spend more time with my Alesis really working with it, but I'm starting to get discouraged by its lack of real-time synthesis capabalities. Thinking of selling it and getting an Ion or something. Though I of course can't get all my money back for it, and I just got it.

I'd really like to get a real analog. I'll be scouting the pawn shops next week in the city. The other two synths that were reccomended to me were a Roland EG 101 and a Roland Juno 60. I'd probably like the Juno 60 a bit more because I'm looking for one where I can make a lot of wierd noise with. I'll start checking out garage sales too.

ITP: I bitch about little kids at the bowling alley.

Well last night I went to the bowling alley with a couple of friends. In the next 3 lanes there were about 20 - 25 kids who's ages ranged from 2 - 6. It was some kid's birthday party. We didn't mind them at first, as they did nothing to bother us. Well about 3 of them walk over into our lane just as I'm about to bowl and roll 3 balls down our alley! I bowled my ball fast enough to where none of their balls messed up my score. This happened about 5 times until some big black guy, whom I think worked at the bowling alley, came over and had a conversation with us that went something like this:

Black Guy: I don't wanna see 2 balls go down that alley again!
Me: It's not us, it's the little kids next to us.
BG: I don't care! Don't let it happen again our your asses are out of here!
Me: Ok, fine then.

After about 10 minutes, a little kid, big smile on her face with ball in hand walks over to our alley swings her arm back as if she's about to roll the ball and I let out the most epic "NOOOOOOOO!!" ever. She just stared at me, then a man, who I think was her father, came over and moved her away. That was the last time it ever happened.

Why don't parents beat their kids anymore for acting up and not doing what they're supposed to be doing?

One time I used a bowling ball that was too small for my hand and it flew through the air instead of rolling down the aisle. I was scared that it would hit someone for a while, but then when it didn't, this european guy came over and yelled at me. It was funny.

I use really big avatars because I can, and because they make the images I want to use much more comprehensible. Most of my avatars are a way of displaying what I've been listneing to and enjoying lately, in hopes that maybe another member will be exposed to it through me. It's hard to do that when avatars are too small for the album titles to be seen. This particular avatar has no title on it, so I guess it's an except.

It's Doc at the Radar Station by Captain Beefheart, which is an awesome album.

Well, I have friends at both schools, so I can probably tell you which one you should go to, depending on what suits you best:

Pitt:
Located in a city, suburb of Oakland with frequent gunshots/sirens heard at night.
Near Duquesne and Carnegie-Mellon, so that's like an extra 10-15 thousand college kids you can choose to party with.
Football team is meh, but men's basketball kicks ***.

Penn State:
Located in a town in the middle of nowhere, but because of the college it's always full of people and stuff to do.
Campus is really spread out like hell, so you have to walk through town to get to classes. Similar to Pitt but more expansive and not as many big buildings.
Basketball teams are meh, but football team was ranked #3 this year. Go JoePa!

It's not like people break into your dormroom and force you to funnel liquor.

My school used to be notorious for being a "party school" but then they changed the name and supposedly the reputation changed with it. I don't think so though. Because even though 2,500 people go there, more than half of them are drinking every weekend. Don't avoid schools because they have reputations for partying. If you can control yourself then you should be fine. If I were you, I'd be more interested in the academics they offer.. you know, the supposed "real" reason people attend college.

It depends. I'll drink every weekend if I have the cash. But if I have some beers left over form the weekend and I don't have class until the afternoon the next day, I'll polish 'em off.

And I know people that'll have a few glasses of (box) wine during a weekday evening... maybe some rum or vodka too.

Strange question, but would anyone have qualms about calling fives in an orgy?

Anyone heard of Ayin? I know they've toured a few times, and they're hella good. Check them out if you can, or if they play near you.

You know when you're sitting down at a party an you gotta get up to go piss, you call "fives" (short for five minutes) on your seat so no one takes it before you get back.

But yeah, that definition in an orgy setting.

I'd sit on your seat, so to speak.

So I want to review something and give it a bad rating for a change. Any suggestions?

Last night, I think a police car I'd been evading without realizing it caught up to my car and took down my tag number after I'd already escaped inside the house with lots of things I wouldn't want a cop catching me with. Aren't I hardcore? I might have completely imagined the thing, too.

I was supposed to be going to my friends party today but this week has gone sooo slowly and I'm exhausted. He's told his friends to invite their friends and people their friends know etc etc.

His house is gonna get trashed so bad.

Can someone recommend the most accessible/best album from Ted Leo & The Pharmacists please? I've been wanting to get into them forever and I'm just gonna go ahead and buy an album. ( Or possibly download if my internet decides to actually download at broadband speed)

My personal favorite is Heart of Oaks, but all of them are good and pretty accesible.

Don't ever say Ska again.

That music must be destroyed.

Methinks you had a tramatic experience skanking at age eight.

I had a really great night tonight. My friends missed the bus, so I was waiting for a long time, and some locals came up to me and started talking. I ended up meeting a really pretty girl who seemed to like me. We exchanged various contacts.

I feel quite nice.
