This album is a bit of an oddity. One of Rock musics most flamboyant frontmen teams up with one of the biggest stars in opera. Its certainly something that only the great Freddie mercury could pull off. this was the realisation of a dream for him, and a chance for each to broaden their musical horizons. This album was concieved and performed purely out of love for music and not for financial or commercial gain, which is very refreshing. have an open mind about this and you could find yourself pleasantly surprised....
Barcelona
The title track begins with a vocal harmony performed by frieddie, a sound that Queen fans will be familiar with. The song is well written and performed with emotion by both artists. an Uplifting chorus signals a great start to the album.
4/5
La Japonaise
As the title suggests, this song has an oriental feel to it. The lyrics are a bit cliche at times but the depth of the music rather than the lyrics are what serves this song best. Sung partly in japonese which can be annoying as you dont have a clue what they are saying.
3/5
The Fallen preist
This song is pure opera. the score is dramatic and exiting. The song tells the story of a preist who gives in to sexual temptation and then wrestles with his morals and responsibilities. This is a really good song and the high point of the album
5/5
Ensueno
Sung entirely in spanish this is a slow song. the melody is haunting and draws you in as the song builds and then retreats. not the best song on the album but enjoyable just for the melody.
3/5
The Golden Boy
This song is in a gospel choir style, similar to the one used in Queen's 'somebody to love'. Another Brilliant and beautiful chorus and a strong, narrative driven lyrical stle make this another suprisingly good song.
4/5
Guide me back
A simple song which showcases the vocal skills of caballe. This song always reminds me of 'Bridge over troubled waters' for some reason. it has the same sort of uplifting chorus.
3/5
How can i go on?
probably the weakest song on the album. it sounds like something out of a cheap broadway musical. i dont care for it much, and neither will you.
1/5
Overture Piccante
This song is a sort of medley of all the other songs on the album. You may think that sounds like a terrible idea but it is saved by a brilliant piano solo Freddie. Its an awkward to the album.
2/5
Overall
This album really has to be approached with an open mind. I wouldnt normally dream of lisening to anything like this but i was suprised how much i enjoyed some of it. Thew Fallen Preist in particular stood out as an impeccably well written and performed piece of music. This will not be to everybodies tastes, but if you are looking to broaden your horizons a little its well worth a listen to see if it does anything for you.
