Band: Primus
Album: Frizzle Fry
Year: 1990

Primus' first studio album and they hit it off with a classic album. Frizzle Fry though matched with 'Seas of Cheese' it is one of the great albums ever. Perfect CD for someone new to the world of Primus.

To Defy The Laws Of Tradition- starts off with a live clip from something or other; then breaks down in a drownish tone to fit into the solem guitar line. Very haunting feel at first with Les' few bass notes. After a few seconds the song breaks into classic Primus feeling, bouncy bass feel and great drum line. Lyrically are that of the lyrics; a few examples of breaking traditions and what havoc they may cause. Great Primus song...one of my favorites.

5/5

Groundhog Day- a very slow moving song, les speaks very dull and lyrics are just a tad too dull than usual. As the song ends the song gets more up beat and makes the song more enjoyable. Not the greatest on the cd but its still a good solid song.

3/5

Too Many Puppies- The 'political' song of the album. Mainly about an anti-war song about soilders being trained for war but in a crafty metaphor of puppies. The beginning steadily builds the song up to a strong heavy feel all throughout the song. Nothing really much to complain of this song.....classic primus song. The mini drum breaks by the end are great as well.

4/5

Mr. Knowitall- The heavy bouncy feel of the last song follows through with Mr. Knowitall. The lyrics are spoken without music backing; except a drum beat about well, Mr. Knowitall. The song is simply heavy and bass driven as usual. Definitley one of the best on the cd.

4/5

Frizzle Fry- The title track and in my opinion the best song on the cd. Starts off pretty slow but soon enough it picks up. The lyrics are classic Primus style, very odd and humours. Its the story of the Frizzle Fry who beleives in nothing but Captain Crunch. The chorus seals the deal for this song being the best on the cd. Great bass line as well. Also the longest track on the album.

5/5

John The Fisherman- Everyone knows this primus song; not even primus fans. Starts off very upbeat with a solid drum beat. The beginning of the Fisherman Chronicles. Les' voice sounds the best in this song. Everybody is solid with their respective instruments, especially Herb.

4/5

You Cant Kill Michael Malloy- brief instrumental interlude played on some type of piano and violin. nothing fancy, just merges into next song

(no rating)

The Toys Go Winding Down- Goes from the slow feel of Michael Malloy to a very rough and heavy bass line giving a dark feel. Odd lyrics as usual; and as usual dont really make much sense. Good song, nothing to press the skip button over.

3/5

Pudding Time- Very funky feel in this song. Lyrics are quite odd like Toys... but the bands fantastic playing make its not really matter. Classic primus; great song. Another great track of Les' vocals.

3/5

Sathington Willoughby- Not really a song, merely a song about Sathington Willoughboy a politican, its very very short and merges right into the next song.

(no rating)

Spegetti Western- The oddest song of the cd, basically about a guy on too much drugs writing about being unemployed and boredom. The lyrics dont last long and the instrumental afterwards is much better. The lyrics are enjoyable, but the song could of just been a instrumental all togethor and it wouldnt have made a difference.

3/5

Harold Of The Rocks- Another favorite primus song. Story of a guy going to hang out with his friends who bring along a guy by the name of Harold. A jumpy song with great guitar line. Nothing more to explain, playing is great, lyrics are humorous as always. Only downside is the more mellow guitar solo drags on a bit to much. Hardly ruins the song though.

4/5

To Defy- as with every primus cd, a mild remix of the first song that last maybe 30 seconds. nothing flashy

(no rating)

Hello Skinny/Constantinople- Bonus track for the remaster. Much different than the rest of the cd but it is still a solid track. Kind of dull after awhile but the 'constantinople' break brings it up.

3/5

Overall: 5/5

This album is tied with '...Seas Of Cheese' and neither are better than the other. Classic primus all the way through. Like cheese it is great from start to finish. The bonus of hello skinny is a good addition as well

I'm sure I won't be the first to point this out, but most tracks got 3/5, so how come the album got 5/5?

Anyway, cool review, even if I'd rather look at your avatar. I can't get into Primus, though. I keep downloading tracks people suggest to me, because I see how loyal and fanatical their fanbase is, and on paper they're exactly the sort of band I should like. But when I listen to them....I respect them, I appreciate them, but I just don't enjoy them. Does it usually take a while to get into them?

because as some songs alone; they arnt that fabulous...but the cd fits togehtor perfectly so thats why its 5/5. Plus with a number or star grading system im not the great at. So the ratings may be a tad off.

and it does take a bit to get into them.....i didnt like them at first but then I picked up seas of cheese about a year after and I feel in love. they are a band that you grow to like. they arnt instant appeal.

Some of the songs I would have given higher ratings (Groundhogs day, Too Many Puppies...all of them) but still it got a 5/5 and I'm happy with that.

I have this album and i think it's cool, although i disagree with the statement that you need to grow into primus, for me at least.

I found their off-beat humour and hard rocking with some excellent drumming, bass and guitarage (yes, all instruments you can see...) to be perfect. I felt giddily overjizzled from the second i heard Les squeel "toooo mannny puuuupppieeesss" and i knew they were the band for me :smash:

well a few people I know when we first heard primus we just thought it was just to silly to be taken even lightly. but after hearing someone talk about them again like last year made me listen and I just fell in love again. So maybes its not really growing into it but more of a right time right place type of band.

Primus is a great band, but for some reason I forewent my traditional band orientation by buying their most recent album first. Now "Antipop" is the only one I have and I must go further back to get some more. Maybe this one?

Get Sailing The Seas Of Cheese.....best album theyve made.

I agree with 5/5 for the album, without doubt primus' best offering
however i was disapointed with ur critisim of Groundhogs Day (in my opinion one of the albums best tracks)

Quote: "Groundhog Day- a very slow moving song, les speaks very dull and lyrics are just a tad too dull than usual"

"The lingering taiste of toothpaiste made the milk go down a bit funny, but them chex they do satisfy" - how is that dull? Thats funny :D

I guess dull wasnt the correct choice of word. But every time I listen to that song I just get really antsy to skip over it. Guess Les' delivery just kind of ruins it for me, too slow and drawn out for me taste.

I have both Frizzle Fry and Pork Soda. Although I do like Frizzle Fry a ton, I would still prefer Pork Soda.

This is a good album though. No doubt about it.

"John the Fisherman" is an awesome song, especially that effect at the beginning that makes the guitar (?) sound like a fishing line being reeled in.

I'm pretty sure that little sampled clip at the beginning of the CD is the first couple seconds of a Rush song...called "YYZ" I believe

I'd have knocked down Mr. Knowitall's rating a point - I just find it kind of obnoxious without reward

Pudding Time and Toys are great! I'd have put them up a point or two - Pudding time is funky, tight and silly yet it rocks: classic Primus. Toys is dark and original : again, classic Primus

See Redi86's post for my two cents on Groundhog's day

but hey that's me, and I didn't write the review

i'm a huge primus fan... one of the biggest, i'd say.

my favorite album... that's a toughy. i'd have to say Frizzle Fry, although i also like Cheese and Brown. hell, i like all of them... anyway.

the live clip from To Defy The Laws of Tradition is on Suck On This (their first album), John The Fisherman.

Groundhog's Day isn't the best song instrumentally, but you've got to love the lyrics. in a lot of primus songs, the lyrics make the song. it's just the goofy, witty nature of them. it basically nails what i do every morning... lol.

i learned To Defy The Laws of Tradition on bass, and it's a very fun song. one of my favorites.

Too Many Puppies is a classic. it's a good thing they released that song years ago and not during the elections... heh, primus is definitely one of the bands smart enough to stay out of political propaganda.

Mr. Knowitall is very repetitive. i like it, but it's not my favorite by far. "...and whatever rhymes with eloquent"

Toys Go Winding Down is great... John the Fisherman is, next to My Name Is Mud (for some bizarre reason) the most popular primus song... (you'd think something more along the lines of Tommy the Cat or Jerry Was a Racecar Driver.)

i could go on and on about primus... but i'll stop here.

I actually still think Jerry is the most well known Primus song out there. Everyone; not even primus fans know that song once they hear it.

The most well-known Primus song is the South Park theme, followed by "Jerry..." because it was on the first Tony Hawk soundtrack.

Youd actually be suprised how many people dont know Primus did that song.

Mr Knowitall isn't that great, neither is Toys.

The intro to Defy the laws is from YYZ yes.
