Jared nailed it. Illmatic is incredible. The gritty production, the fact that beats are straight up piano, bass and drums, and Nas' flow on that album is unstoppable. Definitely one of the best rap albums ever.

Good spl!t. Two awesome bands. Daitro has grown on me so much since i initially heard them. Check out mihai edrisch if you haven't, its the drummers previous band.

I question your actual listening of the album considering you are somehow able to make review long accusations after only hearing an album once.
Illmatic is as much a reinvention of east coast rap as 36 Chambers. Plus, they are both similar in their extremely minimal production. If you are a fan of rap and dislike these albums, I can't comprehend your attitude.
Illmatic is a good CD but is hardly as immaculate as everyone makes it out to be. I don't doubt its importance or relevance but I think for a bunch of white teenagers on a web forum to be eating up its legendary status may sort of be overhyping something they either don't understand, were not a part of, and/or would like have a piece of. I like the album alright but I don't subscribe to the inflation.
As for The Grind Date, it's a solid album. Amazing stand out tracks and overall fairly cohesive and good. It gets some flack because it's not 3 Feet High and Rising, which honestly I think is a significant drop off from both Stakes Is High and The Grind Date.

So, a white teenager eating up a standard "underground" record as more intelligent/better than Illmatic isn't just as ironic?
Illmatic is successful because it is an effective portrayal of a teenager in the Bronx. Maybe, I just have a fetish for people who are effective story tellers but thats really how it is successful. Also, there is no overhyping.. I do not think it is a perfect album.. and considering it was generally heralded as a masterpiece from its release or even from Nas's first guest spot on Cuban Linx there really is no "inflaton".
Way to play the we aren't as smart as you card, though. I mean really if I could understand De La Soul.. maybe I'd be really into FOOD RAPS!
Sounds like you're just shitting on an album because it gets mad press and you want to keep that "I'm so fly" rep.

I'm not playing any cards. I don't think De La Soul is underground at all. They're ridiculously popular and their style is actually ridiculously polished. I like Illmatic. I just don't agree with the lavish hype thrown on it by the Iluvatars and the planewreqs of the world who have no direct contact with anything Nas has ever rapped about nor would they have found out about the album if it weren't for general online hype and distrubution.
You know how obnoxious it is when stuff spirals out of control on this site. As the Roots Undo is amazing, maybe the best emo album since 2000, but it's not an all time best. Pax Cecilia is the same thing. I repped that album trying to get like 5 fans and certian people decided to wank to it and now the whole thing is blown out of proportion. Illmatic is just another example of a good album that has been smothered to death by its own good press.
pixiesfanyo
07-03-2007, 03:59 PM
I'll agree with that. But it does not lessen the fact that As the Roots Undo or Illmatic aren't defining albums in their genres. It just means a bunch of faggots get into them because they are so critically acclaimed.
DFelon204409
07-03-2007, 06:23 PM
Now here is the part where I fall off. I think Illmatic is genre defining. I think however that importance was achieved with an album that is a 3/3.5 and not a 4.5/5.

Bob Nanna was in a band before Braid called Orwell. They are worth checking out. Also, if you like Bells On Trike, you would most probably like Boy's Life. I like Boy's Life the most out of all the indiemo bands I have heard, but I only have a few albums by the more "obvious" bands. Braid are cool, but I have not listened to them that much.

And cob, I dunno if you ever played Starcraft but I made the nastiest custom multiplayer map for that. It was a mix of the games where you mass your main guys and they upgrade at certain kill levels, golems where you'd move the civilians onto runes to generate super bad guys, and some of the other cool games, plus interesting terrain instead of wack open space. It was tightttttttt needless to say.

Isnt a Philly accent kind of similar to a NY/NJ accent?
And isnt there 2 types of Philly accent?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=V6P9g89cL8k
Theres some dude doing a Pittsburgh accent and with our slang terms and stuff, its actually kind of funny if youve ever been to pittsburgh, every dude that grew up in the city talks like that and uses those terms.

Theres an article on it, hahaha. Check out the vocabulary.
