When I band has some nice guitar work but horrid vocals, I can usually get past the vocals and like them. But I just can't get past those JD vocals.

On 'Presents' the JD vocals are bad, but on their other stuff they're amazing.
Frodus are awesome.
Hey have you heard Decahedron? They're Frodus' new band. Or, rather, ex-members of Frodus are in this band.

I always thought he sounded ridiculous on the older stuff. Nevertheless, I still liked them.
Their live shows were sick! He never used a mic and eventually his voice got all ****ed up. That's why they used a sort of 'megaphone' on 'Presents.'
I've heard of Decahedron.. what do they sound like?

Decahedron are great kinda post-punky, dischord stuff... i think someone from fugazi is in them...
anyways I got bored one day so I read most of the 82 page thread. Pretty sad, but mostly interesting. Just wanted to say thanks for everyone that recommended all the cool bands. Couple of things...some one mentioned 'The Murder Of Rosa Luxembourg' they started out as a joke metal band, then went a bit mental on their full length, dont think you can call it emo/screamo at all... THEN, they released an ep called 'secret bark language' which is really wierd and mellow, almost jazz...
I would like a hand with the definitions of the following... (dont think any of them are 'pure' emo or screamo, but the influences are clear).

Long Beach nigga!!!! Long Beach isn't ghetto it just depends where you go. Like North and West Long Beach is the ghetto. Downtown & East Long Beach isn't the ghetto. You might want to stay away from Downtown b/c that is kind of where all the gay guys roll. East Long Beach is the true sub-urbs an my home. :thumb:

What's the definition of screamo, does anyone wanna tell me?
Electric Ocean
05-02-2005, 09:32 AM
heavy fast screamed hardcore parts, with abrupt starts and stops and guitar focus more from the classic emo side, and quiet, twinkly melodic parts in between.
Check out some of the bands on the first page, you need to hear it really. Try Saetia or Circle Takes The Square.
Yeah I'm kind of waiting for the definition Torn and Dfelon were gonna do.
Anyway, it's just an unknown type of music. It's like emo except vocals are usually screamed so little talking like Indian Summer of Saetia and it's more chaotic. A lot of the screamo songs I've heard have longer parts with no singing. The production quality usually isn't very good but neither is that of a most emo.
Anyway, that's just what I picked up from it, and I am no expert in this genre (or any genre, for that matter) but I am just trying to help you out here.

Check out some of the bands on the first page, you need to hear it really. Try Saetia or Circle Takes The Square.
If I could still vote for you for noob of the month, I would.
There's some emo/screamo bands on Purevolume; check out Circle Takes The Square, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, A Day In Black And White, Van Johnson, Textbook Traitors. Those are all the ones I can remember at the moment.
There are also some The Kodan Armada and Kaospilot mp3s on their official websites, if I remember correctly.

Call them whatever you like, but 'emo' is stretching it.
Calling just about any new band 'emo' is silly. Emo died like 8 years ago, and bands just don't do that kind of music anymore. Of course music evolves, but Hot Cross is so different to say, Indian Summer.

Calling just about any new band 'emo' is silly. Emo died like 8 years ago, and bands just don't do that kind of music anymore. Of course music evolves, but Hot Cross is so different to say, Indian Summer.
Calling them hardcore is stretching it too then. Hardcore brings to mind verse-chorus-breakdown with power chords, shouted vocals, and double time drumming the whole way through. That doesn't describe Hot Cross as much as it describes a component of Hot Cross. To me emo is the most prominent component in Hot Cross' music so the label seems more than fitting.
Of course music evolves. That's an argument people make for Dashboard being emo. EMO EVOLVES U DOOSH! Emo has evolved over the years. I hasn't really changed the core ideas but the sound has expanded. It hasn't freakin' expanded to pop punk like Brand New, but it sure has expanded to include elements of metal and progressive rock. and even jazz with bands like Off Minor. Quit crying for the good ol' days and accept where your genre is going whether you like it or not. You can still listen to your old LPs.

The old Underoath is hardcore - at least I think. I don't know what to think about the new Underoath though. I don't know much about alexisonfire though.
Emocore is obviously more hardcore than Emo. Emo is when bands soften down and lose some of the hardcore elements but they do still have some hardcore there. I'm sure there's a difference between Saetia and Rites of Spring.

Even on their self-titled? It's not exaclty poppy; most of the songs don't have a chorus and it has lots of those melodic, atmospheric almost screamo-esque bits (althought the heavy parts are nowhere as near as chaotic).
Anyway, I guess they're just one of those bands that sort of fall inbetween genres.

A few kids responded right so i got a group of people to respond in a chant when i said "You down with O.P.P?". So then my other friends started their own group and my group and the other group just had this huge gang war. Both sides would recruit members and fight. It got thru my whole skool. People would go "Who you down w/; O.P.P. or A.R.S.(the othr group). It lasted until teusday when the school put all their staff on the feild to stop it. I fled when we were all caught. Then in the middle of running my friend and I found a cardboard box and started breakdancing when we were caught my the head staff member. My punishment was to stay off the feild for a week. So now the school is all worried about "gangs" and stuff like that. They are inforcing new rules at lunch like you can't be in groups, you can't chant anything, you can't clap, and you can't skip whiling holding hands(this one was enforced after my friend and i were skipping with our hand held and the lady caught me and my friend and told us to stop. Then kids here also think these "hardcore" kids (really metalcore) and "screamo" kids (really post-hardcore or "pop-core") are tough and angry and violent. I listen to a bunch of that stuff and I'm seriously so easy to throw around.

Many people at my school also think being straight edge is stupid and retarded.

Well, personally I don't really like straight edge. I have many friends that are straight edge so I'm not against it or anything. At my school I have people that claim to be straight edge and then they say that I'm weird because I'm a vegitarian... and I've also had straight edge kids ask me if I had any pills. So yeah, I guess they're just stupid and don't know what they're doing. I don't really like straight edge because it's just another lable and such for people to argue about and I think that we already have enough lables being thrown around at people. If you want to be drug free, and a vegitarian - then good. If you don't want to be - then good as well. It's your life.
My joke band did a song called "Straight Edge Is A ****ing Joke." It's called icecreamxcore and we got sooo many hate-mails from scene kids with names like "xmybrokenheartistrampledonbyautumnsdarkleavesandcu twiththerazorbladesofyourwordsx"
The thing is, none of our songs are serious, they're all about icecream. The lyrics were like "STRAIGHT EDGE IS FOR PUSSIES! I BET YOU ****S EAT VANILLA OFF OF A CONE! CONES ARE FOR PUSSIES!" Good times.

Oh, dude its totally cool if you're not straight edge. I don't bag on people or pressure them to follow my lifestyle. It's just a personal option. Ig you're staight edge good for you. If you're not that's cool. There is no need for violence or insults from any side. It's pointless. Straight edge is up to the person and its not a big deal if someone isn't edge. Ya, that's just my opinion. But the person that told me that straight edge is gay and retarded was completely off base. They went on and said "straight edge people are p'ussies that can't take risk because they're afraid and because they're mama's boys". So ya, no harm no foul if you're not edge. I base my opinion of people on their personalities not way of life or religion or looks.

Does anyone here happen to know when Hot Cross will be releasing some new material? I think I saw DFelon post something about it before.

Post-hardcore I suppose, since they sound like Coheed&Cambria. Never could get past the vocals...or the music for that matter :p Definately not emo unless they had some completely different early stuff that I never heard.
From what I've heard, they're a pop-core band. Then again I've only heard one song and that was a while ago.

Haha. Coheed and Cambria and A Static Lullaby sound nothing alike. ASL is a really bad Grade rip off with a fashioncore look. The bassist is nice but the lead singer is a huge jerkoff.
Anyone here into Still Life? I never see anyone talking about them. I personally love them.

I can confirm this.
They're from my town and I work with a lot of people that went to high school with him. One of the girls that works up here was really good friends with him. Apparently around the time he got into "hardcore" he turned into a huge prick and got into cocaine and stuff. Supposedly he's off of it now but he's probably still a douche.
Also, my friend punched out their drummer once.
