It's just that he called them "screamo". It adds to it by saying something like "Unlike most screamo bands, Brand New is deep and emotional".

My sisters boyfriends brother, who is 23 and I play RISK with alot, decided to talk about emo being anything with cliched lyrics, and I started out nice by asking him if he knew anything about punk or hardcore, and he trie to play it off like I didnt know what I was talkin about because I was 17, saying 'Right now you think your musical tastes are holier-than-thou, youll recognize in a few years that it was never that good'.
Coming from a guy that like Sufjan Stevens.

Depending on what type of sound you are going for Orchid is a bit of a mixed bag. You have their really early stuff where they were a much more emotional vox style not really hitting the screamo sound yet, then you have the pure chaos that they made popular Chaos Is Me being the pinnacle of that, and then finally on Gatefold they did their best stuff in my opinion keeping the sound but altering the vocals into a much more pissed and analytic hardcore.

01-09-2007, 09:23 PM
i understand what you're saying, and its sad when innocent people die. but you make it sound like we’re dropping 2,000 lb bombs in downtown mogadishu. we’re carrying out strikes by ac-130s in remote, nearly inaccessible areas of the country. i haven't read of any bombs being used. we have had forces in the area for some time collecting intelligence and identifying targets, as well as receiving intelligence from the somalis. we aren't picking targets at random.
the somali government is in favor of the strikes. it wants us over there helping. this is the best shot at a positive future that country has had in a long time, and we're supporting it, while at the same time dealing a blow to our enemies. we probably have now killed the guy responsible for planning the embassy bombings. in general, this is good for the US, our allies, and the somali people. its regrettable when innocents are harmed in our strikes, but these actions are necessary, and we do everything we can to minimize those occurrences.

no, it wouldn't, and they don't even have bombs yet.
the strike would be to destroy the program before they got nuclear weapons. it isn't that israel has a special weapon. the use of tactical nukes has been planned and theorized for some time. i really don't know any operations details other than what i read in the news. was that all you were asking, or were you asking for my opinion on a possible strike?

Never trust Wikinews and/or Michael Moore.
srt-4
01-09-2007, 10:18 PM
well, i don't know much about it at a tactical level. but at a strategic level, i don't believe at all that this is an idle threat. the threat itself is useful, which is why it was leaked, but my belief is that they will certainly back it up.
what they are saying is if the un fails to act (which it will because russia and china will block any meaningful action), and the US fails to act on its own, then they will be forced to take this action. and they will indeed have to. the president of iran has stated his desire to "wipe israel of the map." if you say that and are developing nuclear weapons, israel really has no choice but to act. history has taught israelis that they have to act first in order to ensure their survival.
the big mistake iran is making here is threatening a nuclear power with nuclear annihilation before it has nuclear weapons itself. huge miscalculation.
in reality this is probably the best option. iran can't get nuclear weapons. it would be disastrous. this will probably end up being necessary. however, it won't be good. shi't will definitely hit the fan over there. i can't even begin to predict what all would happen, we would have to see what the situation was at the time. but there will probably be a big surge in power by the islamists that will destabilize the region to a much greater extent. hezbollah will probably renew hostilities with israel (which would destabilize lebanon even more), which will probably lead to hamas doing to same in an attempt to capitalize on the situation rather than out of solidarity with iran.
if iran tries to destabilize the world oil markets as a response, which it probably will, saudi arabia will probably step in to a large extent to minimize that. if iran tries to close the straits of hormuz, like they have threatened, then that will lead to a military conflict with the US.
so it would be very bad, but all the likely scenarios at this point are very bad, and this is probably the best of those.
edit: i'm not sure if i was clear on why i think it would be the best. it would be better than iran getting the bomb for obvious reasons. and it would be better than the US directly attacking because even though we will still have to deal with a lot of negative consequences if israel attacks due to the relationship we have with israel, those consequences won't be as great as they would be if we acted ourselves. we can distance ourselves and condemn the attack, blah, blah, which will help minimize the impact a little. if we acted, we would nearly loose all ability to work with the arabs in the region outside of the gulf states. iraq would be impossible. a solution to the problems with syria would also be impossible.

Ethiopia isn't a majority Christian really anymore, they obviously have a very long tradition of Christianity but since about the middle to late middle of the 20th century there has been a drastic upswing in Islam which is why there is so much violence over there.

oh, for some reason i thought that Christians were a slim majority. i guess i was mistaken, which isn't hard for me to believe. although i have a decent familiarity with the horn region, sub-saharan africa in general really isn't my strong point. at any rate, i believe Christians dominate the government (i'm not trying to impose homogeneity though). so if they aren't the majority, i guess Christian-led would be the accurate description, unless i'm mistaken again.
srt-4
01-11-2007, 03:30 AM
oh, and as far as the troop increase question, i think it will be helpful as part of a larger strategy, not on its own. and he did laid out a larger strategy. overall, i thought the speech was good. it was frank, honest, and pretty much spot on. the only things i remember not liking were the grouping of syria and iran together (i think syria can be dealt with and should be regarded separate from iran) and his calling this the ideological conflict of our time with freedom being our side. we need to accept that some of our most valuable allies in the region are not "free societies" and likely would not be able to function as such. we should stop pushing for that. it would be very detrimental if they were to become "free."
i thought the plan was good, but it depends on the iraqi government. if they really carry out what they have committed to: provincial elections, end of debathification, and a crackdown on the shia militias, it could really lead to victory. also, the imbedding of US units with iraqi units is absolutely necessary, and as far as i'm concerned the best action that we could take. it was great to hear him say that’s going to happen.
it was also interesting to hear him mention the patriot missile defenses. since we have long worked with israel on such defenses, i'm thinking that was referencing the saudis. i guess we took notice when talk of them pursuing their own nuclear program came out. and his mention of turkey seems to indicate he will address the issues with the pkk, which would help gain more support from turkey.
and i thought he made a great point when he said something like people suggesting courses of action should explain how the path they propose would be more likely to succeed. many of the "plans" of late that I read are just giving up.
also, he showed understanding of the type of war we are engaged in and urged forbearance against the enemy’s tactics without turning it into a dry lecture on 4gw. like when he mentioned television images. suicide bombings and ied attacks are militarily useless, their value is in their ability to erode political support through being reported by the media.
i was also impressed to hear him talk so specifically about anbar, and lay out a good plan for it. it essentially contained the strategy laid out in this presentation, which has been getting a lot of attention lately:

really recommend watching that^^^^. its very short and simple, so it won't take much time.

They need a change of strategy, not more men, but they don't seem to understand that even after four years.

I think the troop increase is a good idea, we need more people there to keep it under control.
More funding for space lasers imo.

Once my laptop is fixed, I'll hook you up. If not, go into the pop-punk forum and ask in the official blink-182 thread.

oh, for some reason i thought that Christians were a slim majority. i guess i was mistaken, which isn't hard for me to believe. although i have a decent familiarity with the horn region, sub-saharan africa in general really isn't my strong point. at any rate, i believe Christians dominate the government (i'm not trying to impose homogeneity though). so if they aren't the majority, i guess Christian-led would be the accurate description, unless i'm mistaken again.
Christian-led is accurate.
oh, and as far as the troop increase question, i think it will be helpful as part of a larger strategy, not on its own. and he did laid out a larger strategy. overall, i thought the speech was good. it was frank, honest, and pretty much spot on. the only things i remember not liking were the grouping of syria and iran together (i think syria can be dealt with and should be regarded separate from iran) and his calling this the ideological conflict of our time with freedom being our side. we need to accept that some of our most valuable allies in the region are not "free societies" and likely would not be able to function as such. we should stop pushing for that. it would be very detrimental if they were to become "free."
i thought the plan was good, but it depends on the iraqi government. if they really carry out what they have committed to: provincial elections, end of debathification, and a crackdown on the shia militias, it could really lead to victory. also, the imbedding of US units with iraqi units is absolutely necessary, and as far as i'm concerned the best action that we could take. it was great to hear him say that’s going to happen.
it was also interesting to hear him mention the patriot missile defenses. since we have long worked with israel on such defenses, i'm thinking that was referencing the saudis. i guess we took notice when talk of them pursuing their own nuclear program came out. and his mention of turkey seems to indicate he will address the issues with the pkk, which would help gain more support from turkey.
and i thought he made a great point when he said something like people suggesting courses of action should explain how the path they propose would be more likely to succeed. many of the "plans" of late that I read are just giving up.
also, he showed understanding of the type of war we are engaged in and urged forbearance against the enemy’s tactics without turning it into a dry lecture on 4gw. like when he mentioned television images. suicide bombings and ied attacks are militarily useless, their value is in their ability to erode political support through being reported by the media.

ppk = ? I didn't know we had much of a problem with the Turks.
I doubt America has much of a problem with Turkey because Turkey is a largely secular state, so the religion doesn't have much influence in government and they're largely a good democratic state other than that they hate greeks.
About it being allowed into the EU is quite controversial because then suicide bombers and terrorists with turkish passports would be able to travel much more freely in Europe.
I think whatever George Bush decided to do was going to be criticized because the situation there isn't very good and it's gonna be tough to change. The main problem is that the Sunni's hate the Shi'ites who are now in power after Sunnis were mainly in power during Saddam's regime.

Turkey is key. It's the only state that's an Islamic democracy that did it itself.
...yet the US doesn't pay nearly enough attention to Turkey.

ppk = ? I didn't know we had much of a problem with the Turks.
its a kurdish group that wants independence for the kurdish area of turkey and carries out terrorist attacks in attempts to further that goal. lately it has been operating out of iraqi kurdistan. turkey has increased its troops on the border and shelled ppk camps in iraq, but its mostly for appearances. turkey wants us to help them put an end to the situation. and we've been helping through non-military means, but its obvious more needs to be done. however, thats the only area in all of iraq that is stable, and we don't want to turn it into another battleground. the iraqi kurds supposedly don't want the ppk there either, but they are sympathic to their cause enough that they don't want to force the ppk out themselves or see them destroyed. so everybody just kind of wants the problem to go away, but doesn't really want to do anything about it.
and i think we pay plenty of attention to turkey. they've been in nato for more than 50 years.

George Bush has already broken multiple humanity type Conventions and rules and laws, and even if the Democratic party wins the election in 2008, I pray to the sun that they don't pull troops out.
