I don't like how it's split at Grim Heart though.

I would of liked one of the sweet mailers, but I got one for Petitioning Forever so it's cool, and I didn't want to get that Gold, **** looked ugly. Got red/white instead. I haven't put it on the table yet but you said it's split?

pixiesfanyo
11-11-2006, 12:25 PM
Like.. Side A ends with Grim Heart and Side B begins with Black Rose.

Which in my opinion kind of ruins the build up.. but whatever, it's still Converge and it's still the best heavy **** I can think of.

Justin makes this forum what it is, I've decided.

You know on that show Blind Date...the little bubbles that pop-up throughout the date? I'd want to have one of those with Justin's comments on subjects throughout my day.

I'd be sitting in class, my professor talking about something, and Justin's thought bubble pops up: "Man, what the **** is this old bag rambling on about?"

That was an interesting read, but he had one key error. He mentioned earlier that history is more prone to multipolarity and that hyperpowers always tend to fall after a brief period, he then went on to state that by the withdrawl of America as the current "hyperpower" the world is most likely to visit a period of darkness a la the dark ages. The option of withdrawl as leader will not be the advent of a muslim hegemon, far from it. None of the countries in that region are anywhere strong enough to be able to ascend to power whatsoever. He mentioned China as the only viable Asian Tiger power that would be able to suceed the United States, however, this is incorrect because there are a few other powers in the region that could fill this void. But I digress, the point is there is no need to fill this void whatsoever, a stable balance of a series of world powers can better keep the balance than one single power. If the United States were to withdraw the global organizations that were mentioned (UN, WGO, World Bank, etc.) would have their powers increased and could successfully work as a group of leading powers able to sway world opionion granted the United States would have to cede a certain amount of power to these organizations, but that is something that would be dealt with at the time. With these organizations in power working together a balance would occur as opposed to complete cultural obliteration, as he stated in his article.
seriously? the guy went through and countered practically every argument you just put forward. of course without much support, but thats because its just a one page article. read the whole book.

and balance of power politics led to world war I, which of course led to world war II. i would hardly say our record is worse than that. check out the first 400 pages of "Diplomacy" by henry kissinger. its a pretty popular book. i'm sure you can find it in barnes and noble or a similar bookstore. he gives a great analysis of the balance of power system.

and as far as international organizations go, hegemonic stability theory is fairly well accepted. i would suggest "US Hegemony and International Organizations" by Rosemary Foot, S. Neil MacFarlane, and Michael Mastanduno. Oxford University Press. 2003. particularly chapters 1 and 3-5.

well, i can't really give you specific recommendations, a lot of that depends on how strong of a college you realistically expect to get accepted to. also, you are going to need to decide what you want to do within political science. its a really diverse field. some schools are better at one field than others. most schools require you to take at least a course in each of the major fields, but leave you a lot of freedom is choosing what you will focus on. just a few examples of the fields are political theory, comparative government, national and state government, and of course the one i have spent almost all my time in, international relations. if you are wondering what the classes are actually like for some of those, let me know.

also, there is this division within political science between quantitative and nonquantitative approaches. who heads up the departments will be a strong factor in determining which one of those two the school's program is focused on. the quantitative approach focuses on data and mathematics. i took the one required class on that and hated it. it was all about surveys, statistics, poll data, ect. i much prefer the nonquantitative, like what we talk about in here, where we don't focus on the mathematical side. for instance, that article i posted is political science, but the polls you see on tv predicting who will win an election are also political science.

also, you will probably need to decide which one is most important to you, engineering or political science. in most cases you will have to decide between schools that are better at one than the other. if you are going to get a graduate degree in one of those, that will also matter. on the one hand, you would want to look good coming from a strong school when applying to graduate school. but at the same time, and to me more importantly, the graduate degree will completely overshadow the undergraduate. so if you get good grades and good test scores (gre probably), trying to get into the absolutely best regarded program for your undergraduate might not be that big of a concern. like if you were going to get a masters in political science, maybe pick the undergraduate school with the strong engineering program.

so think about what you will want to focus on, and what your grades and test scores are probably going to be like. let me know and then i'll just ask one or two of my professors what schools they recommend. they will know a whole lot more about the actual quality and focus of the political science programs at different schools than i will.

Political Theory and International Relations are probaly the two fields I would be most interested in, I would most likely choose to stay on the non-quanitative end, I love/am pretty good at math but I would hate dealing with it in that kind of setting you described.

I'll look into eventually which I would prefer to focus on but for the sake of discussion lets say I would prefer Poli Sci. My grades are a pretty steady B average, I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet but that's because I'm just waiting to have the correct maths out of the way, I've taken a few practice tests and they were rather easy but that was before the writing test was added in so I'm not sure.

If I chose it as a career path I would like to focus on International Relations (foreign service) eventually working into a high level job in the State Department, Ambassordorship, or working in an International Body such as the ones I mention in our discussions.

Thank you by the way. :)

as far as career plans go, if you want to be an ambassador, you are better off going into business, making millions of dollars, and then giving a lot of money to the guy's campaign that will end up being elected president. the chances are very slim of being promoted up to ambassador as career foreign service. and with the wto and world bank, for the most part you would be better off with economics degrees. there are opportunities at the UN, but few are connected with the US. most will be working for the UN secretariat itself. that might be your best bet, if you still hold the views you do now. because in bureaucracies there are a lot of politics invovled, and you would find yourself on the outside in the state department with the views you hold. on the other hand, they would be welcomed at the UN. but you can deal with that in a few years. your worldview when you are 21 will probably be different than it is now.

next time i see a professor i had who used to work for the state department, i'll ask him for some advice, and i'll ask him and some of the others, if i run into them, about schools that are particularly good for international relations but without the ridiculous selectivity of the ivy league schools.

THATS ME!!!! Someone is a......well, nvm.

But lets stop our pitiful arguement.

Here is a philosophy:

If you hear music and you like it, listen to it. (In other words) If you hear Hawthorne Heights and really genuinley enjoy listening to the music that they produce, then listen to it. I think the "fake" people are the ones that listen to music for the sake of its genre (for example: hardcore, emo, country, anything). I listen to lots of things you people would consider ****, but it doesn't matter to me. I know I don't have that wide of a variety of musical taste, and so I'm trying to acquire more, but I won't listen to stuff that I don't like. I do listen to other stuff though (sufjan stevens, immortal technique). It's suffecient to say that "whatever floats your boat" applies here.

Just some thoughts, now make some critisizing comment, or anything of that nature and you'll piss me off, and then we'll go right back to argueing. :)

Matt?

I won't speak for the other people here but I do listen to bands that I like no matter what their genre. In particular I like some of the stuff you listen to, (old) Atreyu, Every Time I Die, (old) Norma Jean, etc. At the same time I also realize that the discussion of bands in this forum is restricted to bands that fall into the genre of hardcore, everything from Hardcore punk (Black Flag, Void) to metalcore (Integrity, Converge) to emo (Saetia, Heroin) to post hardcore (Robot Whales, Quicksand). If you are willing to find more bands just sort of lurk for a little bit pick up some reccomendations and decide if you like what we're saying, if you do go back to posting, and if you don't please refrain if you do not wish to get flamed.

Also a lot of people take you too seriously, I personally am just a ****ing asshole.

waarrrr all of the time
in the shadow of the new york skyline
we grew up too fast
falling apart like the ashes of american flags
the pieces fall its like a last day parade
and the fires in our streets start to rage
so wave to the people

who long to wave back
from the fabric of a flag that sang
loooooooove all of the time

VINCENT: You dont get it. We dont really care about you liking those bands, its just that theyre not supposed to be talked about in here.

Definately, if we could just con someone into making Dance Tonight Revolution Tomorrow as their avatar we'd be set.
