north korea couldn't nuke the US because they don't have the missiles to reach us yet. you have the situation backwards. the US has had an aegis destroyer presence in the sea of japan for over a year now, in the hopes that it would be able to shoot down a ballistic missile headed for japan. japan is, and has been since world war II, militarilly depedent on the US.

and a worry for some is that if japan changes this situation by building up its military and going nuclear, which it could do very fast, that it would lead to an arms race with china and regional destabilization.

well, we don't want them to nuke south korea or japan, which is what would happen if they went to war with "us". you seem to think japan is hostile towards us. its the opposite. japan, along with britain, is pretty much the most solid ally we have in the world.

basically, north korea and china are allies. japan and the US are allies. south korea is an ally of the US and japan somewhat, but it doesn't want to take too hard of a line with its "brother" in the north most of the time, and it fears japan's power due to the history between the two nations. so it isn't too reliable.

who knows what china would do. china's leadership doesn't even know what they would do. they are pissed at north korea for doing this, not because they fear north korea having the bomb, but because it will probably mean a japanese military buildup as a response to north korea having the bomb. china and japan are rivals for regional hegemony. so a japanese military buildup is the last thing that china wants, so therefore china doesn't want north korea to have nukes. but if it came to military action against north korea, who knows what china would do. at best they would sit it out. at worst they could fight against us like they did the last time the US fought north korea.

Right, I thought that went without saying. Korea has been trying forever to get missiles to get across the Pacific. But I'm pretty sure Japan has enough of a military defense system and enough of a lucrative economic system with the US to shoot it out of the sky.

As much as I hate to say it because I'm a defender of moral diplomacy, I think we should do something along the lines of an Iran-Contra plan to instill rebellion in North Korea. Cause Kim is the problem. It would be very hard and risky, but I think it could be possible. I'm not exactly sure of what the people in Korea think of Kim but I know that these Japanese sanctions are gonna complicate things when Koreans start to feel an economic squeeze.

i definitely don't know about the standpoint of N Korean citizens on their government, but just judging how S Korea has kind of prospered in a way after the Korean War, kinda left N Korea in the dust. Korea was ruined by cold war tensions.

domestic political backlash aside, the plan still didn't work. in addition, it was funding an already established opposition. so i doubt it could work in north korea, where one doesn't even exist. but even if it could, there would be two things to consider. one is the possible consequences of overthrowing a government in possession of nuclear weapons. how could we ensure that kim jong il wouldn't use his nukes in a last act of retaliation? and two, there is little chance that china would sit by while the north korean government was overthrown by a US backed opposition.

honestly, i have no clue what should be done about this. they've tried all practical options short of military action. clinton tried appeasing. that didn't work. bush tried taking a hard line, that didn't work. then bush tried diplomacy. none of it worked. it seems like no matter what, north korea was going to get nuclear weapons and they won't give them up unless we take them. but military action could definitely cause some trouble. so hopefully all those people in the government that are smarter and more knowledgable than me can figure out what to do.

ya, i didn't like those. i think track 4 would have been better without all that. the second half of at the soundless dawn was definitely weaker in my opinion.

i guess now that i'm thinking about it, this one is better as a whole. but i don't think anything on it tops the first couple tracks on the old one. those first two tracks just had such a big, layered, unique sound. i don't think they really recaptured that. most of the stuff i like best on the new one is that more minimalistic eits type sound, rather than the big soundscapes i liked most on the other one.

but i still really like every red heart and would take it over just about anything else in the genre. and maybe in a couple more listens i'll change my mind.

the shah was our guy. we were keeping him in power. khomeini overthrew him in a coup that was based in no small part on opposition to the shah's connection to the US. the iran-contra affair was actually funding revolution in nicaragua against the sandinistas. iran came into play because we were selling weapons to khomeini's government in iran in exchange for him using his influence to get hostages freed that had been taken in lebanon. which he never did. but the money from selling those weapons was then used to fund insurgent groups in nicaragua, the main group being the contras.

the thing that really did in assassinations carried out by the US was the church committee. which was basically a senate commission that uncovered a ton of cia secrets. as a result, strict limitations were placed on the agency, such as the proscription of assissination of foreign leaders.

ya, the cia had no idea. almost all of that intelligence was very old or from the intelligence services of other nations. hussein knew how to hide his stuff from the air, and after the church committee gutted the cia's abilities, everybody knew we had no human intelligence capabilities. almost everybody was looking at spy satellites and ****. nobody was really going out and getting people to give up info. so the cia was almost completely in the dark about what was really going on inside iraq.

also, i don't remember exactly the quote in one of his books i read, but kissinger talking about his experiences, and long before the second iraq war, said something like the president leads intelligence. even if its not overtly, if its an unclear issue, the intelligence is naturally going to learn towards what the president wants to here due to the internal dynamics of the cia and nsc.

since the cia didn't really know what was going on, they pretty much just told the president what he wanted to here and said it was their best guess.

Yep. I go there maybe 3 times a year because for my season pass I get both Gore and Whiteface. It's a really great mountain when 1. It has snow and 2. it's not -30. The best day of skiing all year was at Whiteface last year.
