its been more than a few years since i read it, but from what i remember, its a sci fi book about a young kid that is sent off to a military academy to train to command forces in a war to fight off aliens i guess, i don't really remember who the enemy was that well. anyway, the kid, ender, is like the best of the best and their only chance to win the war.

Matt?
09-12-2006, 11:09 PM
basically yeah. it's not like super "deep" or anything but it's definitely easy to get into. i don't really like books that much but i thought it was a pretty fun and easy read.

it's sci fi, i'm reading it for science fiction class

it's basically about how the world got attacked by these aliens and the humans were basically getting zwned by them, but then they come back miraculously and fend them off. the world comes together to protect themselves against the aliens, and all the smartest kids in the world get sent to this space school where they take part in these strategy games, kinda like quidditch but with guns. it's all about how they take this kid and manipulate his entire life just for there one goal of destroying the aliens, and when he finally destroys them, he realizes the aliens were misunderstood originally, and they never really meant to hurt people.

I've read plently of Kerouac and Burroughs, I was heavily into the beat thing in 10th grade.

Burroughs acutally was not really a junkie during any of his major writings, I think he really was only using heavily during The Naked Lunch but that was written over such a long period of time that it's hard to determine.

The difference between Burroughs and Kerouac is acutally the complete opposite of what you said. Half the time I find when reading Kerouac that half of what he is writing is useless dribble (Which is funny because on the other side of the spectrum, I absolutely hate Hemingway), where as with Burroughs he's always being satrical or pointing out some flaw.

I think I like Burroughs so much because you have to invest time, I don't think anyone gets The Naked Lunch the first time through completely. I'm sure many are replused you know, because that's one of the main purposes of it. But whatever.

And by the way I like the nice burn in there about how I like things but don't really get them. It's kind of like you and ya know.. coming in this forum and pretending you're super into hardcore, when.. ya know I first came here and you were like BLINK 182 OMgz.

I know how to use a utility knife. I used one everyday at work and always cut away from myself. I was cutting a circle and this time it just slipped; tangent line right off the circle into my wrist.

Emo is Hardcore, please don't say you think hardcore sucks but you listen to emo because Gav that is beyond retarded even if you don't like most straight hardcore.

Emo is a subgenre of hardcore. I don't have to like the main genre; and I don't. Deal with it. You can like a kid but not like the parent, fool. I like emo because it removes trivial, pointless BS in hardcore like the tough guy attitude and things of that nature but adds different stuff; a different type of passion (of course hardcore has passion but emo's passion is different), poetry (differs from hardcore lyrics/music because I can relate more), and an overall better musical structure (preferentially speaking).

If I have to explain and defend my preference one more time, you're all getting banned. :p

Stop giving Pixies random **** because he may be a pretentious *** but he seems to know his stuff with literature and has made some decent points.

He made no decent points but neither did I, since it wasn't a full fledged argument...also, I don't give him crap first. He started it with an unfunny and dead joke and I came back so he got more defensive than I do.

Also, if you think rambling on about Burroughs makes you "know [your] stuff with literature," I suggest you crack open a few more books.

So yeah, Ben, stfu plz.

Gav should learrn to play bass with one hand.

That would be so ****ing br00tal.

I can tap. :amaze:

^ She, my doctor, said she reexamined pics of the wrist's cut and one tendon is severed. It may not heal properly so I can't use it, hence, I can't play. I may need surgery, too.
so when do you find out if you need surgery?

Hello emo fags

I'm 99% sure I am going to be doing a presentation informing and educating on real emotional hardcore. My speech is going to be next friday. I'm going to be covering the history and evolution and use sound samples. At the end I'll be reccommending fourfa and this forum as resources if the audience wants more info or recommendations.

I'm going to be putting together a CD of samples, I know for sur eI'll be including Minor Threat, Embrace (as an example of the transition), Rites of Spring (maybe), Saetia, Neil Perry (for the combo of grind and emo) and Circle Takes the Square. Probably more, I need to look through my files and see what else I like. Anyone have any other reccomendations of must-hear emo bands that will help educate people?

ben: my hardcore listenings are primarily emo and melodic hardcore stuff. sometimes i'll throw on integrity or something but really not that often. i like pretty much all the bands that people post on in here, i just don't really listen to it.

i probably have most of the songs bob

lolz my name is bob thats so funny

Aight, for future reference, whats your AIM? Ill splow a nigga up after i get the blanks.

I listen to a little bit of hardcore here and there. Theres no band in particular I would really say I like, but most hardcore in general is just good enough for me to throw on.

You should get someeee Indian Summer or something to show that space inbetween the early scene and what I label as "screamo" (Saetia and resurgance)

So yeah, Ben, stfu plz.

Gav maybe you get a jaded view of hardcore FSU out in Boston, but not all Hardcore is tough guy ****. I don't claim to be an expert on hardcore though it is probaly my favorite genre, but it seems that your view on hardcore appears to be that of Bridge 9/Rivalry bands and Tough Guy/Beat Down ****. Please do me a favor and don't tell attempt to educate me on a genre that I don't need education on, just because you like some shitty Italian/Swiss/(insert random European country) band with a 7" on Electric Human Project.

So Gav, yeah, shut the **** up please. :)

Saetia was around during the screamo scene but they aren't screamo. Screamo needs a certain level of chaos that Saetia never achieves.

Its still kind of lame though that when somebody likes emo and not hardcore everyone jumps at the opportunity to say "BUT EMO IS HARDCORE" even though they have a clear understanding of what hes trying to say.

Cob: Not a burn at all. Ben's being dumb.

why all the hate? we're all here for the same reason. everyone that posts in here consistently has a kind of good idea of what hardcore is in most forms, i'd hope and i do think.

from the last few times i've dropped in there's been more #1 bs in this forum then the hardcore/metalcore one.

Wow, Scott. Thanks. I didn't work in a hardware store for 2 years or anything. :p

I know how to use a utility knife. I used one everyday at work and always cut away from myself. I was cutting a circle and this time it just slipped; tangent line right off the circle into my wrist.
