Maybe like typical chords, as well as tempo and time signature?

tons and tons of octave chords and lots of minor 7ths in less chaotic stuff. Other than that, whatever you think sounds good. Lot's of bands seem to make up chords as they go along, using alot of dissonant notes to throw things off. Just mess around and see what sounds good. Don't worry about time signatures or beats either. Emo doesn't seem to focus on anything like that.

I'm not asking how to.
I'm asking what typically goes into writing one.
Chords, scales, modes, time signatures, et cetera, et al.
It was out of curiosity since I'm learning what I'm actually writing.
I like to make sense out of it.

The reason all you people trashing SGlove are idiots is because you don't understand what theory is. Theory is a means to understand what people create aurally. Emo bands do have particular theoretical techniques and formulas that can be observed and understood using theory. SGlove's idea of using theory as a way to understand how bands make emo songs in order to understand how to make his own is completely legitimate.

Wow
03-20-2006, 01:16 PM
Why?

There's no correct structure or technique or proper chords or anything that goes into writing an emo song. You shouldn't be told what's common in different styles. Play what you want, how you want, when you want, as long as you think it's good.

That is brash idealism. There is theory to everything. Just because you can't explain it with anything other than "no correct structure or technique or proper chords or anything" doesn't mean its not there.

That's not 100% true. Lots of bands use similar chords. Mostly octave chords, (7 8 x 9 10 7)or the simple 7 8 9 chord (Mohinder for example). Having said this, I'm pretty sure that most of the kids who started dissing SGlove are going to grab their guitars right now to try out those chords.

edit: The first one is from high E to low E, second one is from low E upwards

Wow
03-20-2006, 01:20 PM
Sure there's theory to everything, but you shouldn't take the common theory and base your own music off of it, is what I'm saying.

Then explain why so many emo bands sound so similar? Are you really going to maintain that people in emo bands have such good ears that they can emulate the exact chords and stylings of each other by ear? That's BS. They talk to each other, in real life and in places like here, and figure out common theoretical ground and use that as a means of emotional release.

I honestly had no idea this would create an argument.

I said it before, I'll say it again.
I'm not going to be ripping off any "emo theory."
I just want to know what I'm listening to.
What chords would use to create a specific mood, as well as what scales, and key and modes I would be able to use to augment this mood that certain emo bands are able to obtain.
For all you know, I could be playing blues and just want to broaden the whole genre of blues by adding this touch of hardcore to it.

Sure there's theory to everything, but you shouldn't take the common theory and base your own music off of it, is what I'm saying.

In my music theory class, we had an assignment to finish an opening six measures of an unknown piece. After analyzing the form and structure of the excerpt we composed the rest. Interestingly, the structure was so tight in the first six measures that nearly everybody's next 4 measures were the same. The rest of the peices sounded sort of similar too but most couldn't be distinguished from each other on a validity to the untrained ear. I say validity because I composed my whole thing theoretically. Other people sat down at a piano and did it out, but I did not. I was able to create something authentic by means of undermining the point of composition. Sure, emo uses unusual chords and structure but they do use chords and structure, and it can be analyzed theoretically. I could make a heartwrenching emo song using formulas and you would never know the difference between that and an authentic emo song. That's the power of theory.

You people bitching about SGlove and Wizard are just trying to boost your authentic image by being like, "there's no way to write emo man. It's from your heart." By doing so, you end up looking like bigger tools than he does. He was just asking a simple question and like Dfelon said, one of the main thigns about theory is analyzing different songs within a genre and finding similarities in structure and form.

You get those red/blue plastic cups and have 10-20 depending on how awesome you are. Each person gets 5-10 and you fill them 1/3rd of the way with beer and then stack them in a pyramid. You take a pingpong ball and try to bounce it into the other person's cups and if you do, they have to drink one of them. First person to drink all their beer loses.

DFelon204409
03-24-2006, 05:44 PM
You guys are dumb. Beer pong is played with a paddle. Beirut is when you shoot it in by hand. Bouncing it counts as two cups but can be blocked by the opponent. If you win you stay on the table, thus allowing you to play more and drink more. The loser drinks all the remaining cups so if you lose it's bad because it's a lot of beer at once and if you win it's good because it's more alcohol over time and I mean hell, you win.

Wow

legend of zelda ocarina of time- when i beat that it was epic, it was like sheer joy of completing a game i'd played for so long. so fun so perfect.

mario kart 64- i sucked at this game but it was still loads of fun, stupid bananas pissed me off though, i'd always get screwed by those dumb items and stuff. i sucked at combat mode or whateer it was.

sonic the hedgehog- this game is boss. i played this so much years ago when genesis came out. 2 is definitely the best, metal sonic is a bitch, but the music in this game is just awesoem. the air zone when you're on tails' plane is just the best song ever.

contra- i never played 1 or 2 but 3 is one of my favorite games. so intense and hard, i suck at it, but it's still so sick. man i love the rapid fire rockets. i always die on the second level when it switches perspective though, it always takes me by suprise.

chrono trigger- maybe my favorite rpg of all time, this game was so epic! ahh i love it

megaman- way too hard for me :( :( i lack the skills to be good at this game, but i have 7 and X and they're both pretty fun

I think I am gonna have a heart attack: La Quiete, Phoenix Bodies, and Sadville are playing in Knoxville (20 minutes from me) in August.

I got a question: Are Noise and Noisecore real genres?

I got a question: Are Noise and Noisecore real genres?

Yes.

If you want some good noise there are basically the big three: Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, and Wolf Eyes. Melt Banana plays second fiddle.

I already listen to Black Dice and Wolf Eyes. I love Wolf Eyes. I saw Noise used as a genre and I didn't know if it was correct or not. Thanks.

I heard some Lightning Bolt awhile ago, I can't remember if I liked it or not though. Does anyone have any links to MP3s of their songs?

Dude it was all about GoldenEye. If you disagree, you are wrong.

How the hell did I forget GoldenEye?! :(

That game rules.

Half Life > Goldeneye > Every other game ever made.

Wow

Goldeneye is > Halflife and all of it's mods.

And that's coming from someone who plays a half life mod for money.
