i agree that emotion makes saetia great, whereas skill and creativity make hot cross great. but they are different bands, and the fact that they approach their music from different directions doesn't to me make one better than the other. i just happen to like hot cross better, but they are both great.

The feeling, the groove, and emotion. Someone said if it makes me A. Tap my feet, B. Feel emotional (in a good way, not like I want to kill the stereo), or C. Think about it afterwards, then chances are it isn't an awful piece of music. Dream Theatre are awful though. They do not groove, they do not move, and they don't make me sit down and think. If technical skill is all you care about, then I don't know how you can appreciate punk rock or folk music at all.

Well if you read Saetia lyrics they are much more angsty and melancholy than Hot Cross lyrics. The emotional delivery is also greater in Saetia. In Hot Cross, Billy seems older and wiser, and seems to have gotten out of his pervious angst in Saetia. Hot Cross lyrics are a lot more laid back, for ex. "fuc.k not lest ye be f.ucked", theres a bit of humor here and there. "Forget the phony f.uck who thinks with an as.s instead of a head." I'm not saying he was "immature" in Saetia, i'm just saying hes wiser in Hot Cross. Its a different perspective. And like FLoydFanatic said, thre is equal amounts of emotion its just applied differently.

EDIT: no one said they liked Hot Cross only because of their technical skill. Its just a plus.

no, i don't.
i think we can both agree that saetia seemed to focus more on emotional catharsis, while hot cross seems to focus more on doing new and interesting things out of the love of creating and playing music.
where we differ is that you aren’t looking at this objectively. you value emotional expression above everything else, and regard any agreement about saetia on their emotional expression to be a concession to your point of view, however, like i said before, its really a matter of taste. i also put a lot of value in hearing genuine emotional release in a band’s music, maybe even the most value, but it just so happens that in this case, i like both saetia and hot cross a lot, but i like hot cross better. you can't really quantify emotion, skill, and creativity. they are both awesome bands, i just happen to like hot cross more.

Like people said, the technical skill is just a bonus. I personally find it amazing how they entwine the two guitars and manage to go from being super technical to spacy and atmospheric all within one song. They just take it to the next level. They don't just come up with a nifty riff and build around it, you can tell they really take time to construct a song while managing to not lose a sense of flow and cohesiveness and even create a sense of improvisation with some of the really strange stuff the guitarists do. Layered over top of all that is Billy's vocals which never fail to deliver as Neeshee and others have mentioned a cross between full forced emotion and abrasive wit.

deadohiosky9
01-16-2006, 02:02 PM
well said guys. Urban Cameo, just because someone says that Hot Cross focus more on creativity and technicality, doesn't mean that they are a band who don't care about emotion. Like Srt-4 said, Saetia obviously focused more on emotional catharsis, while Hot Cross seem more interested in the music with the emotional catharsis as an add on. They are kinda doing their own thing.

Saetia has alot more metaphoric basings, where as Hot Cross seems just stereotypical hardcore rants about the scene.

It's Unban, but for what it's worth, when emotion is an 'add on' to music, it ceases to be good music.

saetia lyrics are more poetic, hot cross is more straightforward. i don't see the rants about hardcore except in "lend me your brain (i'm building an idiot)". Unban Cameo, your view that when emotion is an "add-on" to music it ceases to be good music is an opinion, we can't really say what Hot Cross' primary focus is. We can just guess. Billy's primary reason might be for emotion, where as the guitarists enjoy focusing more on technicality in their writing. And I do believe there is plenty of good music out there that isn't incredibly emotional.

It's not a matter of what their perogative is with the musicianship/emotional output, it's with how you perceive it. You said the emotion is an add on to the music implying it would be good if it lacked emotion. I disagree.

I don't believe there is a such thing as keyboard tabs. If you don't know the notes on a keyboard... then you shouldn't even be playing one. If you don't know the notes for any instrument, you shouldn't be playing it. That's my opinion.

This is also the wrong forum... unless you're talking about Cries of the Past or Acts of Depression from Underoath... which still isn't emo or screamo, so it doesn't belong here.

Yeah, I have to agree about that. If I were to claim that I were edge, I most definitely would not be drinking coffee. In my opinion, if you're gonna label yourself as straightedge, then drinking that amount of caffeine just makes you a hypocrite. Its quite funny actually to see kids who do that.

And it made me sick. Maybe if you would have listened when I explained that to you, yes I ate a steak because I couldn't resist myself but I felt terrible and it made so ill that I threw up. Also I went and saw the doctor and he told me that you don't have to take any supplements or vitamins that you can get your protein by eating soy protein. Jesus christ, listen I know what Ian said about it, it wasn't about being edge just to be edge. Lo Mein, Vegetable Fried Rice, and spring egg rolls are amazing. Especially with soy or duck sauce.

I like this stuff called pansit that's like these really thin salty noodles that are cooked in soy sauce and have vegetable over top of the noodles. Sweet and sour pork is pretty awesome too. I hate rice though cause I've had like everyday since i could eat solid food.

i like pouring like junan sauce (dunno if that's what it's called really...) onto my rice

it makes for a heigtened experience that is quite pleasurable

hmmm.... Ive never heard of that. Ill ask my mom about later. Yeah, rice is ok when it has a sauce or vegetables on it. But, by itself its so bland. But i guess its cause i eat it alot. I love potatos, but my friend that's in a meat and potatoes type family hates them!

Hot sauce makes anything better, I have a very black sense of taste in food.

Okay, I have to do something.

My friend loves Underoath. And that's fine and all. But, he seems to think that they are really original, and that they started that whole 'sound'.

And he applies this to both the old(metalcore-ish) and new Underoath.

Please guys, help me prove him wrong. I want to show him that they really weren't original at all.

**** off Chiel. I was answering his ****ing question that I do know what the hell straight edge was about. How about this for a change, you stop popping in randomly and just saying pointless derogatory comments and actually contribute, or is it that you don't know much about the conversation and you want to feel important?

Why would I stop popping in randomly if nothing interesting and worthwhile is being said? All you idiots do is argue about random stuff, trying to prove your point and doing your utter best not to take any advice or maybe (just maybe) even listen to the person you're arguing with.

Arguing isn't about winning, arguing is about compromising and coming to a solutiong together dude.

They're not original. They just copy the sound that they think is good at the moment. It was black metal, then metalcore, then generic metalcore, then finally crap.

Their old stuff is original, how many other metalcore bands do you know of that are HIGHLY influenced by black metal? Probably none.

I like their old stuff pretty well, and as StandingStill said Bleeding Through were REALLY influenced by black metal when they wrote thier first album all they were listening to was Dissection and other Scandanaivan (sp?) black metal bands.
