evolution leads to crazy ****. doesnt it make you wonder how black sabbath lead to bands like emperor and deicide? (metal analogy) its the same way with emo and screamo. and by the way the orchid is sort of weird they are screamo but they sure do sound like grind at times.

Ya, one thing I was going to note is that emo as a genre is a subset of hardcore. However, emo is vastly different because of the things that have influenced its sound ever since it was invited in around 1984. Think about Hot Cross as a subset of emo, because they're an emo band at their core. Just because they've evolved beyond their initial emo label, and what defines the heart of their music, doesn't mean they're not emo. They're just diverse and emo.

This is the same as saying metalcore is a very specific subset of rock and roll because if you think about it:

Rock{Hard Rock[Metal; Punk(Hardcore) => Metalcore]}

many of the emo/screamo/"revolution summer" hardcore groups sound alot like more chaotic and aggressive forms on indie.

So now we have emo/screamo being listed as grindcore, hardcore, and possibly indie for some of them. All of them are very distint genres that have little in common with each other.

My point? i don't have one because I woke up literally five minutes ago and I have no clue what I'm even talking about. :p

Wow
11-11-2005, 10:25 AM
How about you just stop talking about it? Emo will always be emo no matter what people call it.

Belle Epoque > Everyone.

Special Brew
11-11-2005, 10:32 AM
becasue it's clear that bands themselves are rejected the emo/screamo label because many of them have taken the genres off of their Myspaces and PVs. And now this Abolish Screamo Tour thing is going on.

Plus it's too hard to explain to everyone, and I hate talking to hard headed idiots that won't believe a single thing I tell them. Labelling it under hardcore or something will just make things much easier in the future.

Wow
11-11-2005, 10:34 AM
Who cares? Rites of Spring hated the emo label but they're an emo band. Just because a band doesn't like the label doesn't change the genre that they are.

And if it's too hard, don't explain it. Let them be ignorant. As long as you know what it is and enjoy it, that's all that matters.

Special Brew
11-11-2005, 10:42 AM
Sorry, but I like talking about music with people. I know it's emo, and I love it, but I can't be bothered to explain that to every single person I wish to talk to.

I'm just not going to shame the bands i like by callign them emo or screamo anymore. Apparently the Used is the common example of emo used by the media, and nearly everyone who listens to music. Let these horrible bands and their fans take the label and it's bad reputation, and we'll go on under a new title.

The bands are hardcore, but I'm just looking for more descriptive words so that I can describe a bands sound more learly when I hold a conversatin with someone.

Wow
11-11-2005, 10:47 AM
Dude, it's really not that hard to explain. I've done it dozens of times in less than three minutes.

Shame them? If the bands themselves get so upset over the name of the genre of music they play, they should stop playing it. It's emo, always has been emo, always will be emo. The other bands already have a set genre called pop-rock. Let the public be misinformed. I'd rather have it the way it is now than the little scenesters running around talking about Saetia and how "hot" Billy Werner is just 'cause he was in an amazing band.

If you're looking for a more descriptive word and they're ignorant, just say emotional hardcore. Afterall, that's what emo is.

That's what I've been saying... and I know nobody cares, I'm just looking for an easy way of describing bands to people without using the terms emo or screamo. Like if I want to tell someone about Saetia, I want to describe their sound and genre without actualy using the word emo, because I wouldn't feel like explaining anything more than just that sepcific band.

CD or Lp and was it The Lurid Traversal or the s/t?
Lurid CD.

As far as I know, the s/t is nigh impossible to find.

Please tell me you picked up Hoover.
Of course. The other stuff is rather common at the distros we see.

Well the s/t (which is basically stuff they recorded four(?) years after splitting, contains about four or five songs I think) I saw in a record store about two years ago and it's probably still there. The CD that is.
Sooo if you realllly want it, hit me up and I'll check it out for you.

Yes. I'm a big Mars Volta fan and it bored me to tears. If you love listening to 45 minute improvisations give it a shot, otherwise steer well clear. Basically its 3 tracks stretched out to the point of ridiculous.
I'm going to this by the way: http://www.atpfestival.com/events/line_up.php?event=19

You seem like one of those people who just doesn't get TMV live.

They improvise to make the songs better, and quite often do.

StandingStill
11-16-2005, 04:28 AM
I've seen them a couple of times. Once they were spectacular, once they were boring as hell. I like the way they jumble the songs up and go off on tangents, but I don't really think they've quite got the ability to pull a 30 minute blues/jazz improv. If they were forced to play 5 songs in an hour it'd be great, but the second time I saw them they managed 2 songs in an hour and a 12 minute drum solo.

well since you havnt heard a single emo band but like metal, I would say start with rites of spring, embrace, and early fugazi (obviously) but after that you might be more interested in the emo's schizophrenic daughter screamo: check out In/Humanity, Pg. 99, Orchid, The Red Scare, Hassan I Sabbah, Usurp Synapse, and After School KnifeFight. :)

Yeah. Whenever I drink I tell everyone online that I love them. I'm a loving drunk.

And I don't appreciate the "animal photographs," mister!

"Animal photographs" was the only thing you spelled right, oddly enough.

I bet you just have a one-track mind. >_>

When I said I didn't appreciate it, I mean he added it and I never actually said it. :p

I did tell him I was gonna play with myself, though.

Actually no. I got drunk downstairs and then stumbled up to get something and Dfelon was on so I told him I loved him.

A for effort. :thumb:

Oh and I told about three other people I love them too. Forgot about that.

I told you before, I didn't write that. I jokingly told him I was going to "masturbate to a porno about girls sucking off a bouncer" or something. He added in the "animal photographs" just to poke fun at me.

And look at that. The swear filter adds the animal photographs. Woo.

Okay, I won't tell people they're wrong in a joking way anymore. Instead I'll reccomend them some obscure, terribly recorded "midwest" emo band that I found out about yesterday and have proclaimed them my new favorite band (and I'm totally looking into buying their 7".)

Chris: Hmmm, why don't we ask BOB TILTON what he likes?

Me: Hey I'm Ash and I don't like something Chris likes.
Chris: hay toru okada rulez (When you previously stated you'd hated them, therefore, sarcasm.)
Me: Making fun of me for like Toru Okada is immature.

Me: Hey I'm Ash and I don't like something Chris likes.
Chris: Tilly and the Wall.
Me: What about them?
Chris: They suck.
Me: No they don't and how does that relate to this conversation?

Just a few examples.

I made fun of you for liking Chevelle once. Other than that, I've never brought it up in a coversation when it doesn't relate to it whatsoever.

Now if we're talking about how awesome our tastes are and why we're cooler than eachother, that's another story. :p
