I think Slaughter of the Soul is one of those albums a metal fan should own for 'historical awareness' kind of thing, but I also think it's pretty overrated. I mean, it's all solid, and there's plenty of good riffage, but overall it just doesn't seem to be anything special to me.

I don't yet have Terminal Spirit Disease though, so I'm witholding judgement on the band as a whole until I've heard that.

hum, Slaughter of the Soul is the album I have been told is their best, hum.

I will pick up one of their records if it is cheap enough.

Well SotS is their "classic" record, their most well-known and popular one that everyone will name-drop as inventors of the more modern style of melodic death metal. But people whose opinion I actually take notice of (like Jondur) assure me Terminal Spirit Disease is better.

SotS is still more than worth owning though, it's a very good record. I just don't like it as much as many seem to :)

Nope, what's it like? I need a good book to read.

Here's an excerpt from the back of the book/new york times review:

Probably Garcia Marquez's finest and most famous work, OHYoS tells the story of the rise and fall, birth and dealth, of the mythical town of Macodno through the history of the Buendia family. Inventive, amusing, magnetic, sad, alive with unforgettable men andwomen, and with a truth and understand that strike the soul, OHYoS is a masterpiece of the art of fiction.

New York Times review:
"OHYoS is the first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race.... reporting on everything that happened(in the town) with more lcidity, wit, wisdom, and poetry than is expected from 100 years of novelists, let alone one man... Mr. Garcia has done nothing less than to create in the reader a sense of all that is projound, meaningful and meaningless in life."

It's not a easy read, but it was definitly worth the time.

Fantasy books, so I suppose you won't like them if you don't like fantasy (dwarfs, elves, etc). It's pretty much the best fantasy series I've read (no, I haven't yet read Eddings); if you just want a good story, then you can just take it as a good story. If you want something more as well, then there's lot of subtexts about alienation and racism you can read into it.

RA Salvatore's books are fantasy/adventure and very very good, I suggest you check out the Dark Elf Trilogy and then the Icewind Dale Trilogy, then the Lagacy Of The Drow. I forget what his new series is called, I have the first book in it, The Thousand Orcs... the Hunter's Blade rings a bell though.

And if you like his books, I'd suggest checking out any Dragonlance books :thumb:.

When Heavy Riva comes on, ask him too, he is big on fantasy books as well :)

There've been a few book threads in the pit every now and then (noticeably joshmay's book club thread), but yeah, there's not much overall. We could just make this a makeshift literature forum, though. Yeah, a lot like LOTR, yet extremely different. They all have Kingdoms of Elves/Dwarves, and in a few, Orcs are bad guys/evil wizards and such. A lot of it is Tolkien influenced, but then weird interpretations, and more in depth, cause the authors aren't dying half way through writing the series.

Did you ever try reading The Hobbit? It is more oriented to children, so its not quite as confusing. Not that your reading level is that of a child, but his stuff is kind of hard to get through, takes a few reads to grasp everything thats going on, probably for even the most advanced readers.

Yeah, I borrowed the Hobbit (picture edition, hurrah) from a library when we went on holiday, and read it. That was fine. I mean actually the LotR books.

As an aside, it turned out that the length of the holiday was greater than the borrowing period from this particular library.

Anyone know any free programs that convert mp3 files to WMA files?

Easy WMA, on download.com

I have Mac though, so it might not work for windows. I'm not sure.

How long do I have to wait? I was gonna give you random rep....

It's not a length of time, it's the number of people you give rep to. So you can't give it to the same three people over and over. It used to be 15 people, but I'm really not sure any more.

The rep appears to be random. Someone said the limit is 7000 but I think that's a bit off.

Awsome. I don't get to go to the ski hill enough to learn how to snowboard (I have tried a few times), so I stick to skiing.

Bart.. I've been wondering about this.. If someone with neg rep ++reps you, does it take away, or is there a minimum rep level for everyone?

I think people with rep in the negatives just can't affect anyone else's rep, other than to leave a message.

The limit?
As in the max you can give out before getting the "You have given out too much rep in 24 hours" message.

rep given is .02* rep you have, so if they have less than 50 they give 0 rep.

Oh. I thought it would be a certain number of people, but that's based on more or less nothing.

People makes more sense because I don't give out 7000 rep a day ever...

I think it's different for how soon you can rep the same user.
Even then I'm pretty sure that figure is way off.

So a person with neg 100 would give out like -1 if they had positive?

No, negative is weighted as zero.

By that calculation I should only be able to give out about 16 rep+. I thought I was worth a little more than that! Any volunteers to test this theory?
